Michael has an interesting smile. It's ambiguous. You don't know whether he is friendly or just cooking up something sinister. More than likely it's just a friendly smile of someone who doesn't want to look obtrusive. Of course, that exact smile, I am sure, helps him get those villain roles that he is so well-known for.
Michael sees himself as a comedic actor, because that's what worked best for him on stage. But in films (movies and TV), there are lots of close-ups and his smile becomes very prominent.
That's my 2 cents worth.
