What I like about Michael Emerson's performance is that he offers up a character who would be virtually unremarkable except for one or two characteristics that are peculiar, that don't fit. So your first impression is to dismiss the character as uninteresting, but then you catch that detail and you look and watch, then bam! he's got you. He's found a way to blow away the set, steal the scene. It's just an unexpected and delightful surprise. Even after watching him through all the Lost episodes, I still find he does that. If he had matinee-idol looks, I don't' think he could pull it off.
