Every time I hear/see this misunderstood comment, I always crack up. Reminds me of those crime followup stories in which the expert psychologist interviewed says that the suspect wasn't so much bad as he was misunderstood.
I think Ben is both bad, but also a man of good intentions. But we all know about the road to hell, don't we?

I don't think that Ben is bad. He just do what he has to in order to defend his island/country and that make him a hero. After all heroes are those who have the courage to do what it takes for a higher cause even with personal cost. Socrates said that above everything is our country.

Well, let's see, participated in the genocide of the Dharma initiative staff on the island — 40 people dead, not leaders, but more or less rank-and-filers, shot Locke in cold blood out of jealousy it would appear, lied that he was born on the island, killed his father in cold blood, ordered the two women in the Looking Glass station to be killed as damage control.
Sorry, those are not the attributes of a hero to me. However, I do believe that he doesn't not want the island and its powers to fall into the hands of greedy people with ambitions of world domination, and that's what makes it interesting to me, because that means there's someone who's far worse than Ben.
