Emma woke up to find Desmond arguing with Juliet.
"Why should I help her, Des? She's destroyed my life with Jack!" Juliet cried angrily.
Desmond pleaded with her. "Juliet, please. Jack can't be here, and now that Ethan is gone you're the only other doctor in the village. If our friendship ever meant anything to you, please help her!"
Reluctantly, Juliet agreed to treat Emma's wound. Desmond noticed that Emma had woken up and grabbed her hand. "Emma," he said softly, lovingly. "You're going to be okay."
Emma felt lightheaded from the loss of blood. "Des, where's Jack? Did he get away?"
Desmond saw the terror in her face, and spoke gently. "I didn't go back for Jack. I brought Juliet to you instead. Your leg needed attention right away, and she's the only one who can..."
"Des, no!" shrieked Emma. "They're going to take Jack away! Don't let him leave, Des, please!"
Juliet pretended not to hear any of this conversation and continued to treat Emma's leg with uncharacteristic roughness. "This is going to hurt, Emma. I'm taking the bullet out." Juliet plunged into Emma's wound with her tweezers and Emma screamed, then blacked out once again.

Mel watched as everyone packed up their things and met in the middle of the village.
"This isn't going to work out how you want it to." Ben told her as he came up to her side.
"Probably not, but I have to try."
"Christian could be anywhere in the world."
"If I'm out there, away from the island, he will find me."
****************************************************
Mel left Ben and bent down to Jack who was slumped over, tied to a tree. She tapped his face lightly, "Jack?"
He woke slowly, squinting his eyes as they came into focus. He pulled at the ropes around his arms.
"Why did you tie me up?"
"Because you were ruining my plan." Mel said calmly as she sat next to him.
"Where is Emma?" he asked.
"With Desmond."
"Untie me. She was shot, she needs me."
"Emma will be fine Jack. Right now we need to talk about you."
"What about me?"
"When the plane crashed, you found your father's coffin, no?"
Jack looked at her skeptically, "What does that have to do with anything?"
"It has to do with everything Jack. You didn't see his body did you? The coffin was empty."
"Yes." Jack hung his head, "His body was gone."
"Jack, your father is alive."
"What?" Jack exclaimed.
"Christian Shepard is the man who kidnapped William."
"That's impossible."
"I saw him myself. You look just like him."
"How are you sure it was him?"
Mel looked away, lost in thought. "A long time ago, before I came to the island I met a man. A nice doctor named Christian. Trust me Jack, I'd know him anywhere."
"Why are you telling me this?"
"Because your father has my son, and you are going to help me get him back."

Emma woke up, this time finding herself lying on Desmond's couch. Her leg was heavily bandaged and she felt groggy and disoriented, probably from painkillers. Desmond sat in a chair next to her, moaning softly with his head in his hands.
"Desmond? What's going on?"
"Emma, I'm sorry. I'm so, so sorry."
She struggled to sit up, but the effort was too much for her and she fell back against the couch. "Did you find Jack?" she whispered.
Desmond looked up, his eyes racked with guilt. "I was too late. He's gone, Emma. Mel took him to the boat, along with the others. They left the village before I could get back for him. Emma...." He looked at her sadly. "I'm sorry I failed you."
Emma's shock was transparent. She felt numb all over. Finally, she had found someone she loved completely and unconditionally, and who loved her back with an equal passion, and now he had been cruelly taken from her. Just like Desmond had been the first time she fell in love with him. Why would Mel do this? Emma moaned. "And Ben let them just walk away?"
"Ben was outnumbered." Desmond responded. "He didn't have any control."
"I want to talk to Ben," Emma declared. "He'll know how to bring them back."

Lauren and John reached the village outskirts and Lauren was shocked and confused to hear Cameron’s voice, for she thought he had gone and left the island with his men. John took Lauren’s hand and they hid behind a bush watching the commotion.
She could hear Cameron yelling, ordering all of the survivors to pack their things and leave with him, and threatening them with his gun. Eventually a fight broke out and they anxiously sat and watched them argue.
Lauren grew worried that John would want to go back home too, and leave her alone on the island, for Cameron surely wouldn’t take her back with him. She looked up at him for reassurance and reading her mind, he shook her head.
“I’m not leaving Lauren, I’m not going to leave you, the island is my home now.”
Lauren smiled thankfully and rested her head against his shoulder, closing her eyes in pleasure as he wrapped his arm around her protectively, keeping her close against him, with his other hand firmly clenched around his knife.
Eventually, the survivors gave in and packed their things and they watched as they followed Cameron out in to the jungle towards his boat.
They waited for a few minutes to check the coast was clear before leaving their hiding place and slowly entering the village.

Emma lay on the couch, heartbroken and despondent, for several hours. Around lunchtime Desmond brought a tray of food to her. “You’ll need your strength back, Emma.” he said. “I’ll take care of you. You can stay here for as long as you like.”
She couldn’t help but smile at him; she still had a serious weakness for his Scottish charm.
“Des, how long are you going to continue feeling guilty? You saved my life today, and I’m so grateful to you.” The intensity of her feelings for Desmond, which she had tried so hard to overcome, surged once more. She still loved him, she knew, and probably always would, whether or not Jack returned to her.
“Aye, and you did the same for me. I haven’t forgotten.” he responded. He kissed her forehead tenderly. “By the way, Juliet left those for you, when you’re ready for them.” He gestured toward a pair of crutches propped against the wall. “She’s a remarkably forgiving woman, Emma. If we’re going to continue living in this village, you’ll have to learn to coexist. Better to have her as an ally than an enemy.”
Emma nodded. She knew she had to make amends with Juliet, she just wasn’t sure how to go about it quite yet. “You think Ben will let us stay here?”
Desmond shrugged. “He’s got his own troubles, and I don’t imagine he has much use for me anymore.”
“I’ll find him, as soon as I can get off this damn couch.” Emma looked at Desmond sadly. “I don’t know how this happened, Des. I wish I could go back in time. I would never have fallen in love with Jack.”
Desmond squeezed Emma’s hand soothingly. “Don’t give up on him, Em. There’s something I haven’t told you yet.” He hesitated, unsure if he was doing the right thing by telling her. Emma looked up at him, her eyes full of hope.
“I’ve seen Jack in a future flash. You’re the reason he returns to this island – you can be certain of it.”
Joy and relief reflected on Emma’s face. Suddenly, her world had brightened. “Des, give me a hand with those crutches. Let’s take a walk!”
Desmond brought the crutches to Emma and gently lifted her from the couch. Emma caught her breath. Desmond’s face was so close to hers, and he was touching her skin. The electricity between them was palpable. She sighed quietly to herself and closed her eyes. Being so close to Desmond again was an incredible temptation, and remaining faithful to Jack might become more of a challenge than she had anticipated.

"There it is." Cameron said as he stopped on the beach and pointed to a small speck on the horizon. "There is the boat."
Mel looked at the small raft that Lauren had come in. Cameron's was sitting next to it.
"I guess it's a good thing I didn't destory the rafts then." she smiled.
"You could say that." Cameron answered.
Mel held Bella close. It had been difficult to take her away from Ben. He didn't try to fight her. He knew he was outnumbered. He just looked at her sadly, extremely dissapointed in her decision to take Bella away from him.
"I love you baby girl." he said with tears in his eyes as he kissed Bella's forehead. "You just remember that your daddy loves you."
Mel had nearly cried with him, but she knew she had to be strong.
"Mel?" Jack said as he stopped by her next to the rafts.
"Yeah Jack?"
"I want you to tell me how you know my father."
"I already told you. I met him before I even came to the island."
"But how did you meet? Why?"
Mel sighed, she was hesitant to give up all of her secrets.
"You tell me right now, or I'm not going anywhere!" Jack demanded.
"You father and I were lovers Jack. Now you know. Are you happy?"
Jack stood there silent and shocked.
"Good." Mel mocked. "Now get in the raft."

Sophie watched from a distance as Ben said goodbye to Mel and his daughter. Watching them as they got on the raft heading towards the boat. Sophie walked over and stood next to Ben holding his hand. "I'm sorry Ben." she mumbled. Apart of Sophie was thrilled knowing Mel was leaving and now she can actully have a relationship with Ben. But her other part felt the loss and hurt Ben was feeling right now. They both stood there as they watched them get on the boat and leave. Trying to hold in his tears Ben sighed and looked at his two girls.
"C'mon lets take you two home." he said as he wrapped his arm around Sophie as she held Molly and walked back to the village.

Zoe watched sadly as Hurley left with the other survivors. He didn't even come over to say goodbye. Luke was back too, and was following the survivors. He hadn't noticed Zoe's return. He didn't even look like he had bothered to go looking for her after her banishment. He had caught a glimpse of her before he trapsed through the jungle, following everyone back to the beach, giving her a cool stare before continuing on.
Zoe couldn't go after them though. She still had to try and get hold of her children, and the only way she was going to manage that was staying on the island, because that was where Ben was going to remain.
She watched on sympathetically as Ben watched Mel leave with his daughter. She could help but feel pity for the man. Maybe now he could understand how she felt.

Mel sat quietly on the raft, lost in her thoughts. She wondered if it was a coincidence that the main men in her life were so connected to the island.
Christian had been first. She had met him when she was still a young grad student. He had been older and mysterious and she had fallen for him hard. Over the few years they had been together he had confided in her. He'd told her about his troubles and his very proud son. He'd also told her about a beautiful island that he wanted to take her to visit some day. He said she would see things she never imagined. Mel knew now that he had been talking about this island. But Christian had disappeared out of her life before he ever took her there.
Then, of course, was Ethan. Her kind, supportive Ethan. She'd found the man of her dreams in him. Then she had to kill him. She'd be wondering forever if she had done the right thing.
Ben was a problem all his own. Mel didn't think she would ever be able to break from his spell. She did love him but it was far from enough. She regretted that she had to lie to him about her reasons for leaving the island, but it was the only way he would have let her leave. She did intend to find her son William, but Mel could honestly say she didn't intend to go back to the island.
Mel turned her gaze back to the island which was quickly fading in the distance.
Desmond had been the last. Des, her protector. He'd saved her life many times and she truly appreciated him. She wish he could have come with her. Maybe he could have finally found his true love, Penny. Despite him stating his feelings for her she knew that his heart belonged to Penny.
Mel was startled and held Bella closer when she felt the raft stop. She looked up and saw the hull of the huge boat.
"Let's get you up there so we can go back for the rest." Cameron said, more cheerful than he had ever been.
Mel nodded and took Cameron's hand as he helped her climb aboard. Jack was right behind her.
"Are you sure about this?" he whispered to her.
"It would be too late now if I wasn't." she answered.
Mel walked quietly to the middle of the deserted deck.
"Where is everyone?" she asked, expecting that Cameron had left people with the boat.
"We're right here." came a sly reply.
Both Jack and Mel turned instinctively towards the voice. What they saw made Mel feel weak. Jack had to grab her arm to keep her standing.
Mel looked into the face that at once filled her with joy and with dread. "How are you here?"
"I've been here the whole time darling." Christian Shepard answered with a smile.

Emma's heart ached for Jack, but at least she felt comfortable and safe with Desmond. He walked with her to Ben's home. The crutches were difficult to master, but she wouldn't need them much longer. Her leg was already feeling better, thanks to the healing effects of the island.
She knocked impatiently on Ben's door, and Ben answered. If he was surprised to see either one of them on his doorstep, he didn't show it. Emma had a feeling that Ben had known all along that Desmond had been released from the Orchid.
"Hello Emma, Desmond." Ben was surprisingly pleasant. "I'm glad to see things are settling back to normal around here."
Emma took a deep breath and plunged ahead. "Desmond and I want to stay in the village, and we need your word that you'll leave us in peace. We must have a truce."
Ben gave her a wicked smile. "Jacob has no further need for Desmond. But you, Emma...you took something from me, and I would like it back."
Emma's cheeks flushed hotly. The briefcase! "Ben, I will return your things to you. I promise. All we want is to be left in peace. Do we have a deal?"
Ben nodded. "We have a deal."
*******
Emma and Desmond returned to his home. She felt unsure of what to do next; she couldn't shake the sadness that lingered. Desmond recognized this and took her hands.
"I know something that might cheer you up. Wait here, I'll be gone for a little while."
Mystified, Emma agreed. She picked up a book and nestled into the couch. Desmond returned a few hours later and brought her outside. Two beautiful brown horses were tied to a tree in Desmond's backyard. Her eyes lit up.
"Desmond! Where did they come from?"
"They were still hanging around Mikhail's home. I know you love riding along the beach, and I thought it might help you feel better. It's probably too soon to ride with your bad leg, but we'll keep them close to us for when you're ready."
"No, Des, let's ride now!" Emma shrieked delightedly.
Desmond grinned back at her. "All right, love."

"Dad?" Jack asked, stunned.
"Hello kiddo." Christian said fondly.
"What are you doing here?" Mel asked, coming out of her shock.
"I'm here for you of course." Christian answered as he walked up to her. He looked down at Bella and grinned, "She's beautiful just like her mother."
"Where is William?"
"He's safe. That's enough for now."
"You said you were here for me. Why?"
"Because you Mel," Christian said as he kissed her foreheard, "You are the one who got away."
"I didn't go anywhere, you left me." Mel claimed.
"I know that. I was called away."
"By who?"
"Oh he's gone by many names, you might know him as Jacob."
Mel's face paled. "I need to sit down." she breathed and Christian grabbed a stool and lowered her onto it.
"You told me that you wanted to bring me to an island. You meant this island didn't you?"
Christian nodded, "Yes."
"Tell me why."
"Jacob wanted you here." Christian shrugged. "I fancied myself in love with you so I had no objections. But like I said, I was called away, back to my real life. To my son. So Jacob found another way to get you here."
"Ben." Mel whispered.
"Yes, Ben." Christian acknowledged as his expression hardened.
"Why did you take William?" Mel continued, forgetting about Jack who stood next to them.
"I was following Jacob's orders. It was easy to convince Ethan that Ben would only put your son in danger. He was head over heels for you too. You seem to leave a trail of besotted men where ever you go."
Mel glared at him, "Not intentionally."
Christian smiled again, his heartwarming smile that made Mel want to trust him.
"It doesn't make sense. Why work so hard to get me to the island, but then let me leave?"
"You are only meant to be gone for a little while."
"You mean I come back later?"
"Darling, you're not going anywhere. You're coming with me back to the island."
"I don't want to go back. I got on this boat so I wouldn't have to ever go back there."
"Mel." Christian crooned, taking her hand. "When are you going to realize that when it comes to this island, you will never have a choice?"

Sophie made Ben a coffee, as he sat at his desk. Writing in his journal. She placed it on a coaster as Ben looked up at her over his glasses and smiled weakly, then went back to his writing. She knew not to disturb him anymore and went to leave him be.
"Thank you" he responded. Sophie glanced back then headed back in the living room to play with molly.
Ben stopped writing. Taking his glasses off. He tossed them aside. He took a sip from his coffee. Then opened one of his draws. A photo was inside. Picking it up he glanced at the picture of a happy Mel with Baby Bella. He smiled and stroked the picture. Before placing it in his last piece of writing he had just done in his journal. Sticking it in. He grabbed his pen and wrote underneath
"Gone, but not forgotten"

Emma and Desmond raced up and down the beach until they were exhausted. Nothing made Emma happier; riding reminded her of growing up in the English countryside, which she had left behind nearly two years ago.
Desmond caught Emma as she slid off her horse, and again they felt the unavoidable surge of electricity between them. He led her by the hand to a shaded spot on the beach, and they sat down. Des pulled a bottle of Dharma wine out of his backpack. "This one's for you," he said. He then pulled out a bottle of his favorite Scotch, McCutcheon's. "and this one is for me!"
Emma stared at him for a moment, then broke into a wide grin. "Des, is this a date?"
"Only if you want it to be," he responded. "After all we've been through, I thought it would be nice to have a bit of fun."
"You're right, we've been through hell. Let's open that bottle of wine and celebrate better times ahead!"
"Cheers, Emma." Desmond held up his Scotch to Emma's bottle of wine. "To love."
"To love," whispered Emma, thinking only of Jack, until Desmond leaned forward and kissed her tenderly on the lips.

Mel glared at Christian, her captor. He'd forced her back onto the raft to take her back to the island.
Before they'd got on the raft, before Christian had tied her hands behind her back they'd had an interesting conversation.
"Were you ever here to rescue the survivors?" Mel asked.
Christian shook his head, "No. Jacob never wanted them to leave the island."
"Did Cameron know this?"
"Yes. You played right into his hands when you told him you wanted to come to the boat."
"Those people standing on that beach, they trusted me to get them home. I gave them my word."
Christian chuckled, "They were awfully foolish to trust a murderer."
"When did you turn into such a horrible man?" Mel asked.
"Darling, I'm only saying what is true."
"So what happens now?"
"Now, we go back."
"I told you, I'm not going back there."
"What are you so afraid of? Ben? Do you think he will hurt you?"
"Ben loves me and his daughter, he won't hurt me."
"You keep saying that Ben is Bella's daughter. Mel, when are you going to start telling the truth?"
***************************************************
In the end, Mel had fought against Christian as well as she could. When he told her that he had to take Bella away she had panicked. She thrust her at Jack who had suddenly reappeared after a mysterious absence below deck, "Don't trust them Jack. They never meant to rescue anyone." she whispered before Christian pulled her back.
"Please don't fight this Mel." he pleaded.
She didn't listen, she fought. But eventually he was able to pin her against the side of the boat and bind her hands behind her back.
"I am sorry for this darling."
"Then why are you doing it?" she spat at him.
"He will explain, everything, once we get back to the island." Christian assured her.

Emma panicked. Here was the man she had loved and desired for so long, kissing her, and she wanted desperately to keep kissing him. But something held her back. She didn't know how long Jack would be gone, but felt she owed it to him to resist Desmond for as long as possible. She knew what she had to do, even though it went against every instinct she ever had.
Emma pulled away from Desmond and slapped him very hard across the cheek. In the next instant she pulled him close to her again and whispered in his ear. "I'm sorry, Des...I can't be with you." A tear fell down her cheek.
She wondered if she had just made the biggest mistake of her life.
