Mel could only stare at the note in shock. He'd been gone for so long she had started to believe that he was never coming back. One month. She had to wait another entire month to see him. Her thoughts of Christian were tucked away as she began to anticipate finally her meeting with Ben.
So he was going by Dean now, she thought. She'd seen all of Ben's passports in the hidden room in his house. He had gone by many names. The man could disappear if he chose to.
Mel pushed open the door the the house and was relieved to see that Christian wasn't home. She went straight to the kitchen and grabbed a match. She struck it and held the flame to the note. It quickly turned to ash and she let it fall into the waste basket. She was still standing in the kitchen when Christian came in the front door.
He smiled and kissed her, "Is something burning?" he asked.
"Oh, I was just trying to light the candle. I could barely get the match lit." she covered.
"Here, let me help you." Christian said as he grabbed another match and easily lit the candle on the counter. "There."
"Thank you." Mel smiled and hugged him. She eyed the waste basket hoping that Christian wouldn't notice the ashes inside. There was no way he could ever find out about the note.

Emma and Jack walked over to Christian's home together. Emma's pregnancy was starting to show, but she covered it as best she could with a loose sundress. She didn't want Christian asking questions quite yet; the thought of him as the grandfather of her child nearly made her sick.
Jack knocked roughly on the door, and Christian answered. Emma spotted Mel in the kitchen behind him.
"Hello Jack, Emma," Christian said. "To what do I owe this surprise visit?"
Emma handed him a sealed envelope. "This is what you asked for," she replied. "Ben's location. I've got specific coordinates for you." She had no intention of telling him about the satellite phone, or any other information she had picked up from Richard's bug. The phone was useless now anyway, its batteries having died within days of finding it.
Christian looked very pleased. "Ah, you've done very well. You've got a good woman here, Jack."
Jack glared at him in response. "And now you'll keep your word to Emma, right? Whatever is coming, do you promise to leave us out of your plans?" Jack's bitterness towards his father had not abated since he had appeared in the village with Mel as his wife.
Christian chuckled. "I told Emma that you two have nothing to worry about. I meant that."
Relieved, Jack and Emma turned away from Christian's door and headed home, their arms comfortably wrapped around each other, blissfully unaware of the turmoil that would very soon descend on their lives.

After a few weeks of seeing more and more of each other, Zoe started to realise she was starting to develop true feelings for Sawyer, which scared her, as everyone she seemed to love and get close too - something terrible always happened.
Zoe was sat outside. It was another bright sunny day as usual. Her babies were in a push chair together. She was having a picnic with Sawyer.
"I have something to ask you." Sawyer said suddenly as they were eating their lunch. Zoe paused in mid chewing of her sandwhich, eyeing him suspiciously. She swallowed the rest of her food quickly.
"What's up?" She asked a little nurvously. Sawyer grinned at her mysteriously, and took one of her hands, stroking it affectionatly.
"I thought maybe it's about time you moved in with me." He said to her gently. "You wouldn't have to live with Juliet anymore, and you always have the kids with you. It will be perfect!"
"Are you sure?" Zoe frowned slightl. "Don't you think we would be moving a bit fast? We've only been seeing each other for a few weeks." Sawyer leaned in and kissed her.
"I've never been so sure of anything in my life." He promised sweetly. "You're the best thing that ever happened to me. It would mean the world to me."
"What about Abbie and Charlie? You don't mind having them with us?" Zoe asked carefully.
"I would be more then delighted having them with us! They're your children, I could never expect you to abandon them. Besides, I like to think we all get on very well." Sawyer mused.
"Oh, you do! They love you!" Zoe assured him. "Well, okay then, let's do it. Only if you are really sure though." Sawyer kissed her again, and she knew that was his answer. She beamed delightedly. She was wrong, things could only get better.

Emma and Desmond began taking little trips out to her old beach shelter together to bring supplies and to make sure it was ready and well-hidden from anybody that might come looking for them. They tried to be inconspicuous so nobody in the village would notice; so far they had succeeded.
Things in the village had been quiet for the past several weeks; there was no sign of impending danger, and Emma began to believe that Christian had made it all up in order to assume leadership. He was certainly capable of such a deception. Jack, on the other hand, never doubted that Christian was serious about this war, and it had led to a number of rows between them. On top of that, his over protectiveness towards her was beginning to grate on her nerves. Although she loved Jack more than anything, she was used to her freedom.
After checking on the shelter and unloading supplies, she and Desmond pulled their shoes off and cooled their feet in the ocean's waves. She looked down at her growing belly, then glanced at Desmond sitting next to her, lost in his own thoughts.
This spot had been her home for nearly a year, and Emma felt she belonged here. She sighed wistfully. "It's so peaceful. Wouldn't it be lovely to just stay here and not go back to the village?"
Desmond smiled at her. "Aye, but we'll be spending enough time here when it all happens."
"You still don't know exactly what's going to happen, do you?"
Desmond shook his head. "I've told you and Jack everything I know, luv."
"What's the point of seeing the future, then, if it doesn't tell you what you really need to know?"
"I ask myself that all the time," Desmond responded. He put his arm around Emma affectionately.
Desmond's touch still gave her shivers. She nestled her head on his shoulder. "Des, do you ever wonder..." she hesitated for a moment, trying to find the right words. "If you had stayed on the beach with me, instead of trying to leave the island in your sailboat, don't you think we might have been happy together? You would never have met Mel, and we wouldn't be involved with any of this drama. We might even had made it off the island in that boat..." her words trailed off.
Desmond looked at her meaningfully. "And this might have been my baby," he said quietly.
Emma blushed. Desmond continued. "But you were wise to choose Jack."
Emma looked at him, puzzled. "Why is that, Des?"
He shrugged. "Because you're supposed to be together."
"Who's to say the future can't be changed?" Emma replied mischievously. Maybe it was her rampant hormones stirring her emotions, but something inside her suddenly wanted to go back in time and change everything so that she could have another chance with Desmond. Right now she wanted nothing more than to kiss him again. She took a deep breath and leaned towards him. He met her lips and they shared a tender kiss of long unacknowledged mutual desire.
***************** Desmond finally stood up and gave Emma his hands to help her up. They made their way back to the village in silence. Emma was horrified by her own boldness, and confused by her feelings. She loved Jack, and she was going to have his baby! What was she thinking? This would have to remain their secret. She resolved to never talk about it, not even with Desmond, and she would pretend it had never even happened.
But then she would remember how lovely that kiss was, and she knew she was probably fooling herself.

"3 Weeks?" Sophie asked. Ben nodded. "Whats happening to me?" she asked. Ben looked away, he seemed to know something but couldn't tell her. "I'm part of Dharma aren't i?" she asked making Ben look at her surprised.
"Wh-What?"
"My dream. My vision whatever it was. I saw Christian and me as a baby in a hospital. He injected me with something. I picked it up and it was part of Dharma. Is it true? Am i part of them?"
"Yes...." Ben paused. "Your just an experiement to them..." he said in an angry bitter manner. "They have been watching you since you were a baby. Your family and friends had no idea. Neither did you. Thats why i brought you to the island. Too protect you from them. Then they found us......"
"Why do they want me?" she asked.
"Your powers Sophie. They caused it. Now they want to exploit it." Sophie sat there scared and worried. "I won't let them get you. I won't let them." he sat down and carresed her cheek. "Thats why Sayid was here. I've made a list and one by one the people who work for him.. Work for dharma. Will be killed."
"Then i want to help!" she said not really thinking straight.

"Why are you really here?" Mel asked Christian one night while they were lying in bed.
He took off his glasses and looked at her, "What do you mean?"
"On the island. Why are you really on the island?"
He leaned over and kissed her softly, "For you." he smiled.
She smiled back at him, "I know that. And I know that you're here because of Jacob as well. But how did you end up here in the first place. All those years ago."
Christian thought of how to answer her, "Well you already know about Dharma. I was one of their doctors. A facilitator off of the island, if you will."
"So you did things for Dharma. What kind of things?"
"Things a doctor does." Christian shrugged. "I kept track of interesting subjects, administered injections."
"Injections for what?" she asked curiously.
"You know the island has some unique properties, right?"
"Of course."
"Well, when some people come to the island, they begin to experience changes. They are able to do things they couldn't before when they were off the island. The injections either suppressed or aggravated those abilities."
"So they were guniea pigs?"
"Something like that." Christian said.
Mel propped her head on her hand, "And you were okay with that?"
"I was, at first." he admitted. "But then something changed."
"You came here yourself?"
"Yes, and I met Jacob. From that point I began working for him. It's been that way ever since."
Mel looked at her husband fondly and smiled.
He looked at her skeptically, "You look awfully happy after just hearing that story. Why is that?"
"If you had asked me fifteen years ago if I even thought I would see you again, I would have said no. I never could have imagined I'd be happily married to you and living on an island no less."
"Happily married?" he asked.
Her upcoming meeting with Ben flashed into her mind but Mel pushed it away, "Yes, very."
Christian opened up his arms and Mel snuggled closer to him, laying her head on his chest.
"You know things will most likely be getting very hard soon. The island will be dangerous until the purge is over and probably soon after as well."
"What are you saying?"
Christian tipped her chin so she was looking up into his eyes, "What I'm saying darling is that I don't want you to get hurt. You of all people will need to be extra careful. Don't let your guard down with anyone."
"Even you?' she teased.
"You have nothing to fear from me, Mel. Believe in that."
"I do Christian." Mel said truthfully as she laid her head back down, "I do."

Emma and Desmond had finished preparing their hideout, and had nothing left to do but wait for something to happen. She remained dutifully by Jack's side after the kiss on the beach and never spoke about it or her confused feelings towards Desmond. Desmond followed her cue and never mentioned it either, but the two would share meaningful, questioning glances whenever they saw each other.
At the same time, her feelings towards Jack grew significantly as her pregnancy progressed. Thankfully, Jack remained completely oblivious to anything stirring between Emma and Desmond. He was so attentive to her and the baby growing inside her that it made her feel guilty for even thinking about Desmond. He was grateful that Desmond had agreed to become Emma's protector and never imagined there might be more to it than a deep and lasting friendship.
Emma wondered herself if there really were more to it than friendship, or whether she had just been carried away in a romantic moment. It was only a kiss, she reminded herself. She was having a baby with Jack; how could she even contemplate going any further with Desmond? It would destroy Jack, as well as their chances for happiness when the baby came.
Still, Emma couldn't help but wonder what might happen when she and Desmond would be forced to spend time alone together when Christian's war began...

Zoe sat straight up, feeling the hairs on the back of her neck prickle, taking a huge icy breath from shock.
"Something wrong?" Sawyer asked as he walked around the bedroom with a towel around his waist.
"Just a bad dream." Zoe replied shaking her head. She smiled at him. "You're up early.
"Well, I thought we would seize the day." He smiled. "How do you fancy a trip to the beach?"
"Sounds wonderful." Zoe breathed.
"Best hop in the shower then stinky." Sawyer teased, smirking at her. Zoe threw a pillow at him playfully.
"Hey, you can talk!" She replied, pretending to be offended. Sawyer then took his towel off and made his way into the bathroom, swiftly followed by Zoe when she hopped out of bed.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Zoe arrived with Sawyer and her kids on the beach. Sawyer had been sweet and packed a picnic while Zoe had carried the children on their journey to the beach. It was really hot, and she was relieved when they reached the losties old beach camp, where she could sit down. She grabbed Aaron's old cot and placed Abbbie and Charlie inside, who seemed quite content being placed there.
Sawyer laid out a blanket for them both to sit on, and they both stared out at the ocean dreamily, holding hands after they had finished their lunch.

Mel walked into the house and found Christian sitting at the kitchen table. She set her gun down next to him, causing him to look up.
"Since when do you carry a gun?" he asked.
She didn't answer his question as she sat down across from him.
"I'm ready." she said, "I'll tell you everything."
Christian slowly closed the book he had been looking at and gave her his full attention.
Mel took a deep breath, "I've been lying to you." she admitted.
"I know that darling." he whispered.
She looked down, "I'm so sorry."
"Why don't you start at the beginning?"
"Okay." Mel nodded. "It was me who sent Ben away. I told him that you had orders to kill him and that he had to leave the island. He left with Sophie and Molly that night. He also took William and Bella."
At this Christian's head shot up, "You sent your children with him?" he said dangerously.
Mel felt tears sting the corners of her eyes, "Yes."
"You regret that don't you?"
"Very much."
"Go on." Christian pushed.
"Two months ago Ben came back here. He has a way to travel back and forth from the island. There is a hidden room behind the bookcase in his old house. He has passports and money. Everything in that room needs to be destroyed."
Christian's eyebrows rose as she continued to talk about Ben.
"I met him in the jungle, I told him what I knew about the purge and then I slept with him."
Christian stood abruptly, his chair clattering to the floor behind him, "You did what?" he roared.
"I know! I'm sorry! He still had that hold on me, it was like I couldn't resist him."
Christian came around the table and grabbed her left hand, "Does this mean nothing to you!" he yelled as he wrapped his hand around her ring finger.
"It does!" she cried. "Please, let me finish. When I'm done you can do whatever you want to me. Send me away, banish me, but let me finish."
"Fine." he spat and threw her hand down.
Mel took a shakey breath, "When Ben and I were done, he nonchalantly told me he was going to marry Sophie. I got upset and told him that the next time he came to the island he better bring William and Bella with him."
"And he didn't" Christian said. He'd been trying to warn her about Ben since they were married. Mel had finally begun to listen but now it was too late.
"No." Mel shook her head, "he didn't bring them back. I met him again, not five hours ago. He said that William and Bella were with their mother, Sophie. My children are calling that woman mother."
Christian could see her heart break and pulled her into his arms, "Darling. I'm sorry that William and Bella are not home like you hoped they would be. Can you admit now that Ben is not a man to be trusted? You have to let him go, for good."
Mel looked at Christian, "Oh I have. I am done with him for good, I promise you that. Seeing him out there today made me realize something that I have been blinding myself too for a long time."
"What is that?"
Mel kissed Christian softly, "That I love you Christian Shepard and I'm not going to let anyone or anything get in the way of that."
Christian smiled and hugged her tightly, "You don't know how happy I am to hear you say that darling. My love for you has always been true, you know that?"
"I know. Can you forgive me Christian? I've been a horrible wife."
Christian chuckled then his face got serious, "You're not pregnant with his child are you?"
Mel laughed, "Absolutely not! What a relief that was. Trust me my sweet husband, my next child is going to be a Shepard."
Christian laughed with her and scooped her into his arms, "I think we need to celebrate! The purge is mere days away and I finally have my wife all to myself."
Mel held on tight to him as he carried her into their bedroom.
"Darling?" Christian asked as they crossed the door frame.
"Yes love?"
"What did you do with Ben?"
Mel smirked as she pushed the door shut behind them, "I shot him."

"Sophie no your not trained, or capable." Said Ben.
"Then teach me! Please i have to do this."
So many months on.
"So who's next?" she asked. Running her fingers through his sticky hair from the gel and sweat.
"No one. You need to rest." he said rolling on to his side to look at her. "How are you feeling?" he asked.
"Tired but you just had your wicked way with me." she grinned and kissed him.
"You know what i mean Sophie!"
"I'm fine." she said rolling to her side having her back to him.
"Sophie. I know your not. Ive noticed the past few days. Your getting weaker again. Your due for your next treatment. I'll arrange for Richard to come." he said. Kissing the back of her neck as he laid closer to her.
"I don't want too. I'm sick of stuff being injected into me and for what?"
"To keep you alive Sophie!" he snapped. "Please i don't want this arguement again. I need you. Molly. Willam and Bella. We all need you."
"Then take me home Ben. I don't need the injections there."
"No!"
Sophie pulled the sheets of her body. Slipping on her robe. She stormed off out the room.
.......................................................
"Sophie?" Ben whispered as he pushed open the nursery door seeing sat next to mollys cot.
"Please don't be mad. You know why we can't go back." he sighed next to her. Sophie smiled as she watched her baby girl sleep so peacefully.
"Just give me the name on the list Ben?" she said changing the subject.
"No, its Sayids turn now."
"Just be mum to your children." he said "and a wife to me!" he smiled. Sophie turned to look at him seeing him smile she couldn't help but smile back. "Now come back to bed darling." he said.
...................................................................
"This might sting a bit." Richard said taking Sophies arm.
"Richard i don't feel it no more." she said. As she watched Richard inject her with fluid. "Why don't i get this sickness when we were on the island?" she asked.
"Healing powers." Richard replied. Cleaning up his different ustensils. "Just sit there. I'll be back in a sec." He said heading out the room. Sophie noticed a file the other side of the room. She hopped of the table and look around before opening the file. She saw infront of her. The list of different people her and Sayid had been eliminated. Then there was one name she spotted. One that hadn't been crossed off. One who had caused this mess to her.
Christian Shepperd.
She heard Richard coming back as she quickly jumped up on the vets table. Where Ben had been using for the last few months. For his meetings with Sayid. "Feeling ok?" Richard asked. As he went over.
"Yes" she smiled. "Richard i need to ask you a favour?" she said.
"And whats that?"
"I need to get back to the island!"

Emma lounged on the couch and dozed contentedly. She was awakened by Jack when he appeared by her side with a tray of food.
"I thought you might like some lunch," he said. He placed the tray on the coffee table in front of her and joined her on the couch, tenderly placing his arm around her. "I'll admit, I make a better doctor than a cook, but I tried."
Emma grinned and struggled to sit up, her growing belly making it more difficult every day to do the simplest things. "It's so lovely, Jack." she replied. She was really touched.
Jack had been so loving and attentive lately, and she adored him more than ever. The recent peace in the village had allowed him to relax a little, and he wasn't as overprotective as he was in the beginning of her pregnancy. Emma had forced herself to forget her kiss with Desmond, and had been purposely avoiding him in recent days. She knew her future lay with Jack, and with their baby.
"You're about six months now. I was thinking maybe we could talk about baby names."
"That's a great idea!" Emma responded cheerfully. Then a sudden stab of fear made her blood run cold. Six months...Desmond had said it would happen when she was about six months pregnant.
"Jack," she whispered. "I think it's going to happen any day now."
Jack immediately understood what she meant. He stood up and helped Emma off the couch. "Then it's time to get you out of the village."
"Come with me!" she pleaded. "You don't have to be here when it happens. Your father promised he would keep you out of it."
Jack shook his head. "I've got friends here, Sawyer and the others...I need to be here for them. And I might be able to keep my father in check. You'll be in good hands with Desmond, I trust him completely."
Emma frowned. That's exactly what she was worried about.

Mel stood with Christian on the front porch of their home. Christian clutched Mel's hand tightly. Not for comfort necessarily, but to keep her from running away.
"Christian, do I really need to be here? I don't want to see this." Mel pleaded.
Christian looked at her with sympathetic eyes, "I know you don't darling, but this is something you need to witness. We've worked so hard for this. Soon it will all be over."
Mel nodded as a tear fell down her cheek. They continued to watch as the people of the village ran around in chaos. Many looked as though they were choking and struggled to get away from some phantom menance. But Mel knew it was no use. Their demise was coming from inside of them.
Others, the ones who were unaffected, ran from body to body trying to help. But there was nothing that could be done. There was no cure for this. Jack was one of those people. The more people he was unable to help the angrier he became. Mel knew it wouldn't be long before he came after Christian.
But Christian wasn't the one who had set this all into play. No, that man stood across the courtyard, watching the events from his own porch.
Christian knodded to John Locke, John nodded back.
Mel closed her eyes, unable to watch the horrible scene unfolding anymore. How many people still had to die?
This was it, the purge had begun.

Zoe held Sawyer's hand as they walked around the old camp on the beach, having stayed there for a couple of days, their first mini break together. It had been brilliant, having time to themselves alone. It was nice to get away from the village too. Away from people staring - especially with some of them still despising her - those who were loyal to Ben - for murdering Mikhail.
Zoe knew there were other issues too - like when she saw Mel around the village, walking around as if nothing had happened after she had killed her father. It was a relief to be back at the beach, so it all could be forgotten, just for a little bit. They could pretend they were some place normal, like a holiday beach.
Zoe glanced over every now and then to check on Abbie and Charlie who were soundly asleep as Sawyer and herself had walked along the shore and into the shallows of the sea for a gentle paddle.
"I wish we didn't have to go back." Zoe commented back. "To the village. The only other person I get on with really is Juliet - and Sophie. But I haven't seen her around for ages! I think she might have disappeared with Ben."
Sawyer held Zoe's hand and tugged her into his body to embrace her.
"We have to go back sometime." Sawyer said gently to her. "The left over Dharma food won't last long, and the showers are so much better back at the house. And since when did you care about what people thought about you?" Zoe shrugged, and hugged him back, both of them oblivious to the chaos going on back in the village.

Jack had promised Emma he would come for her as soon as everything was back to normal, but there was no telling how long that would be. She and Desmond had been holed up in her beach shelter for days, but Jack still hadn't shown up. Emma was tormented by anxiety over his absence.
Desmond was agitated and mostly kept to himself, leaving Emma alone with her thoughts. Clearly he knew more about the chaos to come than he let on. He rarely slept. She was grateful for his vigilance, but if she had been expecting something more from him she was disappointed. Their romantic moment on the beach seemed like a lifetime away.
"Des, come have a bite with me. You haven't eaten all day."
Desmond sat just outside the shelter, his gun slung across his chest, ready for anything. "I'm not hungry," he replied.
Emma sighed. "We're two miles away from the village. What can happen to us here? Come on, you have to eat. I made your favorite Dharma maceroni and cheese!"
Desmond stood up suddenly when he noticed a lone man walking towards them from the jungle.
"Is it Jack?" Emma's heart pounded with happy anticipation. She stood behind Desmond's shoulder to take a closer look at the approaching figure.
"It's Locke," Desmond replied. "Stay here. I'm going to talk to him."
Emma couldn't hide the suspicion in her voice. "Des, we can't trust Locke. He's been working with Christian." Fear began to creep over her.
"We understand each other, Locke and I. Stay here!" he responded sharply.
"No. I want to come with you," she replied defiantly.
Desmond turned to face her with sad eyes and cupped her face in his hands. "You're not supposed to be involved," he said. Emma didn't have a clue what he was talking about. He continued, "Stay here and look after yourself and your unborn baby."
"I'm not letting you go alone." She pulled her own handgun out of her back pocket for emphasis.
Desmond didn't answer. Instead he kissed her on the lips, and for a moment Emma forgot where she was. There it is, she thought. That's what I've been waiting for.

Christian handed Mel a glass of water. They were still on the porch. Christian was determined to see this through until the end.
"Here darling, drink this, you'll feel better."
"Thank you love." she said as she took a drink.
"It should be over soon." Christian assured her.
Mel looked out across the courtyard. More bodies than she could count covered the grass. She looked to the houses across from their and noticed something.
"Where is Locke?" she asked.
Christian looked down, "He's gone."
"Where?" Mel asked a cold feeling growing in the pit of her stomach.
"To find Emma and Desmond."
"But Emma's not on the list. She should be safe."
Christian gave her a knowing look.
"No." Mel whispered as her glass fell from her hands and shattered. "Not Des."
