Day 65 - Night
Juliet closed the door quietly behind her after Zoe had fallen asleep on more sedatives and she headed over to Ben's house, the sky a rick navy blue with the full moon illuminating the sky Juliet knocked on Ben's door promptly, and Ben answered quickly, dressed in the 'native' clothes ready to go collect Jack.
"Ben, we have to get Zoe off this island if she has any chance of surviving." She said with high urgency in her voice.
"I'm sorry Juliet, but that's not possible, I can't let that happen." Ben replied smoothly, with almost cold tones, so different to his reaction when he made sure he got Zoe medical attention straight away from her screaming.
"You mean you won't let it happen!" Juliet shouted outraged. "She's sick Ben, she won't even get to her second trimester, let alone third unless she gets immediate medical attention. Take a look at these if you don't believe me!" Juliet thrusted a folder full of scans and blood test results with all the information of Zoe's illnesses. Ben read them, and Juliet knew he understood what they said, what they meant.
"She can't leave the island. Not now. Jacob specifically instructed for her to join the team, we can't risk her running off if we take her off island." Ben shook his head.
"If she stays here Ben, she will die. I can guaruntee it. You don't have say who lives and dies Ben, and if Jacob wants her here, then she is one of our own, and we have to take care of her. She isn't far off Alex's age. If this was Alex, your daughter, you know what you would do." Juliet pointed out, and Ben's face couldn't hide the sting of hurt and guilt in his face.
"If I let her go, Jacob won't be happy." Ben finally said stubbornly. Juliet glared at him furiously, not satisfied with his answer. Her eyes were wide, and full of sorrow and anguish for the poor girl in her lab in the hospital bed, with no chance of living if Ben didn't do something. Ben recognised this look, and how it made him feel. Juliet afterall, was one of the few selected people who had that effect on him. He sighed in defeat. "Alright. I'll make you a deal. She can leave the island. But only for Hydra. You, Jo, Chase and Sheppard can all give her medical attention. You can fix here there, and you know you can. But once she's fixed, she is to be brought straight back here, understand?"
A tear pricked and slid down her cheek.
"Thank you Ben." Juliet said quietly, and gave him a quick hug, and without another word, she headed back to the lab to prepare Zoe for a trip in the sub to Hydra island. Zoe was still knocked out from the seditives that kept her pain low and the rest she needed. Juliet would wait until she woke up before taking her to the sub, the stress of waking up somewhere new was too risky. She packed medical supplies that she was going to need for Zoe and Ben that would be vital during both surgeries, including a shot of magnesium sulphate for the pre-eclampsia.
It was still night outside when Zoe awoke. Juliet was by her side straight away with a glass of water and food. As Zoe ate and drank, Juliet explained what was going to happen, that they would have to take a sub to the other island, the Hydra island where they had been before.
"But that place is awful." Zoe complained, shivvering at the mere memories she had of that place and how she was treated.
"It's our only chance of saving you and the baby." Juliet reasoned.
"Why is Jack going to be there though?" Zoe asked curiously, not allowing herself to realise the truth.
"We're are bringing him there." Juliet answered truthfully.
"You mean kidnapping him." Zoe snapped bitterly.
"You don't understand. You're not the only sick person on this island Zoe, and that is something that scares us. With the healing powers of this island, no-one should get sick, the healing powers here are too strong." Juliet explained, tones of frustration and fury were detected in her voice as she spoke.
"Who else is sick?" Zoe asked, intrigued.
"I can't say." Juliet responded.
"You can trust me Juliet." Zoe spoke with honesty. "You've really taken care of me since I've been here, and for that I am truley greatful, and in your debt. The least I can do is give my word that I trust you, so Juliet, please, just tell me. There are too many secrets in this community, and my only friends are Jo and Sophie, and I haven't seen much of them since I came back with Ben, nor since I accepted first time round that this has become my home. I know you're on my side Juliet, so please let me return the favour. Allow yourself to trust me." Juliet hesitated for a moment.
"Ben." Juliet replied finally. "He has a tumor on his spine." Zoe stared and consumed what Juliet told her, and it eventually made sense, and it made sense of Ben's behaviour, and Zoe could help but feel empathy for the man, not that it excused how he had treated her and her friends.
"Are you ready to go?" Juliet intruppted Zoe's thought. Zoe nodded, and Juliet supported her, walking with her across the village to the sub, where Jason stood, ready to take them over. Juliet guided Zoe to a bed on the sub and sat beside her with a bag full of medical equipment. She gave Zoe a cup full of more water, and warned her to rest and allow herself to sleep during the journey to be more comfortable, as giving a sedative so soon after the last was too risky in her condition. Zoe soon felt drowsy naturally, and slept, dreaming of Charlie, and her baby.

Richard rolled over in the bed, unable to sleep. He turned so he was facing Carrie, and put his hand on her shoulder. He could see her chest expanding and contracting as she breathed. Carefully, so as not to wake her, he put his arm around her back and pulled her in closer to his body, and put his forehead against hers. He smiled as he felt her warm breath on his face. Richard placed a soft kiss on her lips, and settled down next to her, trying to sleep.
A little while later, Richard found he was still awake. Or had he dropped off and woken back up? He couldn't quite be sure. He figured that he must have slept a bit, because it was much darker outside. He sighed as he sprawled himself across the bed, trying to think of a way to get back to sleep. He was about to close his eyes, when he heard a noise coming from outside. It was soft, and barely audible. A female voice, but Richard couldn't quite make out what she was saying.
Trying not to wake Carrie, he slid out of the bed and put his dressing gown on. He made his way out to the front of the house, and looked out. It was dark, but he could still make out what was there. Richard stepped forwards, off the porch, and saw a figure standing opposite him, by the children's park. Without thinking about it, he walked towards the figure. As he got closer, the person became more distinguished - short ginger hair, a cute round face, and Victorian-style clothing.
"Mary?" Richard frowned, unable to believe what he was seeing.
The girl stepped forwards, so Richard could see her fully. He saw a dark red stain in her clothing, right above where her heart was. "Hello, Richard," she whispered, but Richard could still make out every word she was saying.
"Mary, what ... what are you doing here?" Richard reached out to touch the red stain on her clothes, and was surprised to find he could easily feel the blood, which was still warm.
"I came to ask you, Richard ..." Mary looked straight at him, her eyes still as full of life as they had ever been. "I came to ask you why you broke your promise."
"What promise?" Richard couldn't think of any promise he had made to her, not one he had broken.
"The promise you made when I was dying, Richard. Don't you remember?"
There was a short, sharp scream, which took Richard unawares. He instinctively ran forward and caught the falling figure. He supported her as she collapsed, barely able to move. Richard's own heart stopped as he saw dark red blood spreading out across Mary's chest, making her clothing match the hair that was spread across her face.
"Mary ..." Richard whispered, moving the hair away from her face. Mary looked up at him, only just clinging on to life. "Mary, don't leave me. Please. I can't do this without you."
"You can," Mary murmured, only just able to get the words out. "I know you can, Richard."
Tears welled up in Richard's eyes as he spoke. "I love you, Mary Butler. I could never love anyone else."
With the last of her strength, Mary reached up and put her hand on his face. Taking her last breath, she whispered, "I know."
Mary stood in front of Richard, the soft wind gently blowing her hair back. "That was a hundred years ago, Mary," he said. "Things are different now."
"The only thing that's changed is you, Richard Alpert. You're getting desperate now, you know it's all going to end for good soon. So you clung on to the first blonde whore you saw." Mary challenged Richard in her usual manner, but this time she was serious.
"Don't you dare," said Richard warningly, in a low voice. "Don't you dare call Carrie a whore. She loves me, and I love her. Surely you should be happy now, that I've found love again?"
"Three days, Richard," Mary stated confidently. "Give her three days, and I promise she'll be declaring her love for someone else."
"How can you be so sure?" Richard spoke with a hint of anger in his voice, but his eyes told a different story, one of worry.
"Just you wait," Mary smiled knowingly, when suddenly she disappeared.
Richard woke up in a panic. He blinked, realising what had just happened was a dream. Carrie was sitting up next to him, looking at him with concern. "Are you okay, Richard?" She asked. "You're all in a fluster." She stroked his face, which he realised was covered in sweat.
"Yeah," said Richard, sitting up. "Yeah, I'm fine. Bad dream, that's all."
Carrie smiled and kissed him. He smiled too, placing one hand within her neck and the other on her thigh. He felt her hands sliding down his back, resting on his hips. They both slid down to a lying position on the bed, as Richard pulled the duvet over them both, forgetting about the dream for now.

Ben watched over Sophie as she slept peacefully in a spare room at his. Still not woken up since Zoe bumped her on the head. Ben turned as Richard tapped lighlty on the door and came in the room.
"She's still not awake?" he asked, as Ben shook his head and looked over at sophie. "What is she doing here Ben?...... I thought....."
"I want her here." Ben interupted.
"But already you decided to bring up Alex, to which he dissaproves, and now this?" Richard questioned. "And how is she alive when you shot her?"
"I don't know Richard. But she is. Maybe Jacob is wrong. She's special....." Ben said first with a sarcastic tone, and then a sweet tone as he looked at her sleeping. To which Richard rolled his eyes.
"Well one day one them will get hurt and you won't be able to stop them."
Ignoring what Richard said Ben replied. "I would like for her to be taken to Hydra, and i want her there when i arrive with Jack and co. She'll probally want to see me first when she wakes up." He orders getting up and starting to get ready for going to pala ferry.

Day 66 - Night
Zoe had arrived safely to Hydra island with Juliet, whom woke her gently and guided her to where she would be sleeping until Jack arrived. Zoe was still nervous yet, for starters, there was no guaruntee Jack would agree to do the surgery yet, not to mention she was scared shitless, as Zoe had never had an operation in her life, nor did she expect she would have to endure one, especially one as serious as this, but she swallowed her fear, although she had suspicions that perhaps Juliet was a little hostile to Ben, she still wasn't overly sure she could trust her. Maybe when she next saw Jo she would get her oppinion on the matter.
Zoe was quite comfortable in a hospital type bed, the room she was in was scarily clinical, but the type of medical room that had a 1970s air about it, some of the machines did look suspiciously out of date.
Juliet supplied Zoe with more pain killers, but this didn't prevent symptoms of Zoe's sickness from being evident to Juliet's attention. Shortness of breath, nausea, confusion, complaints of headaches and abdominal pains, her pupils out of focus indicating possible blurry vision. Juliet sighed, hoping Sheppard would be here post hast!
Zoe felt exhausted from the journey to the hydra, and a little dizzy too. Drowsyness came easy to her and Juliet watched over her, Zoe mumbling in her sleep, sometimes picking up on certain words that were clear enough to understand. Jake, L.A, crash, Charlie, sorry were the ones Juliet could pick up on, and some were repeated more then once.
"Jo? Jo? I want to see Jo." Zoe said clearer then her other mumbles an grunts in her sleep. Juliet glanced over at Zoe from where she was sorting out her medical supplies. Zoe was awake now. Juliet walked over to her, the same angelic calm appearence that sometimes left Zoe feeling slightly unsettled.
"Jo isn't here right now. But you'll see her soon, I promise." Juliet said soothingly, squeezing Zoe's hand reassuringly. "Go back to sleep."
"I don't want to!" Zoe huffed childishly and stubbornly.
"You need your rest." Juliet told her firmly.
"Rest, rest, rest!" Zoe complained. "It's boring. I don't want to be here." She wailed slightly, a tear streamed down her face and Juliet wiped it away for her.
"I'm just leaving the room for a moment. If you need anything, press this." Juliet placed a device with a button on that would buzz her pager device in her back pocket. "I won't be long though." Juliet closed the room behind her, careful to lock it before proceeding down the corridor towards the cell Jo was being held in. Zoe tucked the button under the pillow, her body buzzing with frustration. and she turned on her side, staring, but eyes not really focusing on anything as she thought about Charlie and how much she was missing him, how much she wished he was here right now.

Jo sat slumped in the corner of her cell, regretting the way she had needled Chase. She needed all the allies she could get if she and Jack were to succeed in escaping from the Others. "He'll be back," she thought to herself.
She was startled out of her reverie by Juliet's arrival. Jo hurried to the glass to meet her.
"Is Jack here yet?" she blurted out hopefully.
Juliet shook her head. "No. But Zoe is here, and she has been asking for you."
Jo shrugged her shoulders. "Not a lot I can do for her from here, Jules," she responded sarcastically.
Juliet ignored the sarcasm, and something in her manner told Jo that she had something serious to say. Jo leaned back on the table in her cell and listened.
"I ran a full battery of tests on Zoe, and I am almost certain she has pre-eclampsia and spira-bifida."
"Both?" Jo sputtered in amazement. "My God, Jules...she could die any time!"
Juliet nodded in agreement. "We have to convince Dr. Shepard to operate on her, before Ben's surgery if at all possible. We can't waste any time."
Jo fully understood the dire condition that Zoe was in. "I want to see her," Jo declared.
Juliet glanced worriedly toward the surveillance camera tucked away in the corner of Jo's cell. "I can bring you to Zoe, but these are the conditions. Ben is still on the main island, and won't be here until tomorrow night at the earliest, and he cannot know that I let you out. Danny is monitoring the Hydra cameras, but it's late at night and he will probably be dozing; we'll have to take the chance that you'll be back in your cell before he even notices you've left. You can't tell Zoe you are in captivity, or that you and Jack have been coerced by Ben to do this surgery. It will upset her, and we can't afford that right now. By all appearances, you are here by your own free will, okay?"
Jo agreed.
"There's one other thing," Juliet continued. She pulled a black handkerchief out of her jeans pocket to use as a blindfold. "Standard procedure," she explained as she walked towards the inner door to Jo's cell. "I'm sure you understand."

Day 67 [/i]
Last night. Zoe was facing away from the door as her thoughts were still on Charlie, she heard the door open, but didn't look, she knew it would just be Juliet returning as she promised.
"Zoe?" A familair friendly voice called nervously. Zoe turned in her bed, and her eyes brightened with glee at Jo standing in the doorway.
"Jo!" Zoe declared weakly with happieness, her voice a little hoarse from her throat being dry. Juliet immediately fetched some water. "You're here."
Jo walked closer to her, supressing her worried expression from Zoe's eyes.
"Yeah, I'm here. I heard you had been asking for me." Jo smiled as Juliet walked over and handed Zoe a plastic cup of water before temporarily leaving the room, but Zoe suspected she was only waiting just outside the door, probably listening in too.
"I needed to se a familiar - friendly - face." Zoe told her, emphasising the friend word. "Are you ok?"
"I'm fine." Jo answered her. "I'm more worried about you though, Juliet told me about your condition. How are you feeling?" She asked with a concering tone.
"I'm ok, headaches come and go, and my stomach hurts a little, but Juliet is giving me loads of painkillers." Zoe smiled dopely.
"Juliet has a good bedside manner." Jo agreed.
"Jo - can we trust her?" Zoe asked in a low voice, she was greatful for how well Juliet was looking after her, but she didn't want to be the victim of the possibility Ben had ordered her to be so.

Day 67
Jo nodded her head. "Absolutely. Juliet is committed to her patients, and I know she's not overly fond of Ben. She is doing this because she's genuinely worried about you and your condition. You're in the very best hands. And Chase..." Jo paused awkwardly. "Has he been to see you yet? He's here as well. You can trust both of them."
"I haven't seen him yet," Zoe responded. "But I remember who he is."
Jo glanced around anxiously and pretended to check Zoe's pulse while she spoke in a hushed voice, purposely not meeting Zoe's eyes so she wouldn't arouse suspicion, just in case Danny had woken up in the monitoring room.
"You need to know that strange things happen to pregnancies on this island, beyond the abnormal complications you're already experiencing." She didn't have the heart to tell Zoe that pregnancies ended in death. It wasn't the time or the place, right before a major, life-threatening surgery, and Jo was confident they would soon be off the island anyway.
She continued. "The moment you have your strength back, Jack and I will get you off this island. It may look like I'm cooperating with the Others, for now, but don't believe everything you see. I've learned it's much easier if they think I am willingly one of them. I think I know how to reach Ben as well."
Zoe sighed with relief. "I still have the feeling that Juliet is hiding something, but if you trust her then I'll take your word for it."
Jo smiled warmly. "All you have to focus on right now is staying strong. Jack and I will do the rest, okay?"
Zoe nodded. Juliet reappeared by Zoe's hospital bed at that moment, and whispered to Jo out of Zoe's earshot. "I need to get you back to your cell. You've been gone too long."
Jo took another look at Zoe and squeezed her hand reassuringly. "You're in the very best hands," she repeated a second time. "And I am only just down the hall."
Zoe nodded weakly, the pain in her stomach beginning to return as the painkillers wore off. Juliet quickly replaced the IV to keep the drugs flowing, then guided Jo out of Zoe's room and back to her damp cell, pausing to place the blindfold over her eyes as soon as they were out of Zoe's sight.

Carrie stepped out of her house, blinking in the sunlight. It was early, and Richard had been gone for a while. She squinted, getting used to the sudden bright light of midday. She saw Ben hurrying by. "Benjamin!" She called. He stopped and looked around, impatient. "Have you seen Richard?" She asked. "He's been gone for ages."
"Carolyna, now's not the time to be asking after your lover-boy, I'm going to the Pala Ferry," irked Ben.
"They're not arriving there for ages," Carrie replied, annoyed. She and Ben had never got on very well. "Surely you can take five seconds out of your precious time to tell me where Richard is?"
Ben sighed, exasperated. "He's taken Sophie over to Hydra," he explained.
"Sophie?" Carrie frowned. "I thought Jacob said she was a distraction? That you were meant to get rid of her?"
"Yeah, well, he's wrong," Ben said spitefully. "Besides, you're hardly one to talk. You can hardly say you're not a distraction for Richard, he spent three days by your side, shunning all responsibility for the Island."
"I'd been shot, Benjamin! If someone shot Sophie, wouldn't you stay with her until she recovered?" As she thought about it, the place on Carrie's shoulder where Charlie had shot her ached. She still had an obvious scar there - she'd been told it would never disappear.
"That's my whole point," Ben sighed, as if what he was saying was simpler than 1+1=2. "You distract Richard just as much as Sophie distracts me, so why should you and him get to be together for five years, when I can't have a week with Sophie, without being told to kill her?"
"I dunno, Benjamin," Carrie said simply. "How should I know how Jacob works? I doubt even Richard can guess his next move." As she spoke, Carrie stepped down from the porch to the ground, and Ben took a few steps towards her. His eyes narrowed. Carrie, being as skilled as she was at her profession, could tell Ben was about to say what he had been aching to say for a very long time.
"You really think you're something, don't you, Carolyna?" He spat, almost literally. "Just because you're shagging Richard. I've got news for you - you're not special in any way, shape or form. The only reason you're here is because you're good at sussing people out. You're nothing, Carolyna Copeland. You hear me? Nothing!" Ben released the last word like it was a fly that had flown into his mouth. "I promise you, Carolyna, one day I'll prove to you your worthlessness, and you'll be wishing you'd realised it earlier."
Carrie blinked, rather shocked. Ben had never let loose like that. He usually locked his emotions up and stored them in a safebox in the corner of his mind. "Thanks for telling me where he is, Benjamin," Carrie replied simply, before turning on her heel and making her way back into the house.

Day 68
Chase was heading into the Hydra to bring Jo her breakfast when he spotted James Ford, handcuffed and with a burlap sack over his head, being herded into the cage opposite Karl by Danny. Clearly, Danny was struggling with him. Austen, Shephard and Kelso were nowhere to be seen.
He called out to Danny, “Hey! Where are the others?”
“Shephard and Kelso are already in their cell,” Danny responded, as he slammed the metal door on the polar bear cage and locked it. “Austen is having breakfast with Ben on the beach.”
Chase raised an eyebrow at this. “Odd,” he remarked.
Danny nodded, and wiped the sweat from his forehead with a handkerchief. “Yeah, I thought so too.”
********************************
Chase passed Juliet in the hallway as she was leaving Jack and Kelso’s cell with their uneaten breakfast. “Good luck with Shephard,” she muttered briskly. “He’s got a lot of issues to work through.”
Chase sauntered into the room adjacent to the glass-walled cell and watched silently for a few minutes as Jack pulled desperately on the chains in the tank. Kelso slept fitfully on the floor below, still under the effects of the strong tranquilizers required to bring them to the Hydra.
“You won’t get very far with those,” Chase offered smugly. Startled, Jack released the chains, hopped down from the table and faced Chase without a word.
“You don’t look surprised to see me here,” Chase continued in his smooth Aussie accent.
Jack shook his head. “Zoe told me you were one of them.”
“And I suppose you’re wondering about Jo?” Chase needled him.
Jack’s eyes flashed angrily. “Yes.”
“She’s fine, Jack. She’s got a cozy little cell just like yours down the hall. Juliet has promised her some alone time with you, and her word is golden. You’ll see her soon.”
“You’re really enjoying this, aren’t you?” Jack growled.
“Actually, yes,” Chase responded nonchalantly. “It’s time to set the record straight, Jack.” Chase pulled up a chair and sat backwards in it, inches away from the glass wall. “You have always been in my way, long before you swept my fiancée up in your crazy plans to go to Australia.” Chase laughed. “And look where that got you.”
Jack seethed inwardly, but forced himself to remain silent. He refused to give in to Chase’s taunts.
“I took a job in the one place I thought you couldn’t interfere with my life, and here you are. Incredible. But the funny thing is, Jo got her second chance to be with you, and again she chose someone else.”
“Jo didn’t choose you, she was kidnapped by your people! Just like me and Kate and Sawyer and Kelso!” Jack snapped. He turned his back to Chase. After everything that happened, he was not in the mood for this.
Chase grinned. “I wasn’t talking about me. I was talking about your friend Boone.”
Jack merely stared at him, not understanding. “What about Boone?”
Chase feigned surprise. “Oh, you didn’t know? Jo and Boone got quite close during her time with the survivors.”
“They were friends.” Jack responded.
“No, Jack. They were much more than friends.”
Jack’s face darkened as understanding dawned on him.

Carrie decided to go see Juliet. She had to tell someone about Kelso, and she knew Richard wasn't exactly the best person to tell about her ex.
Not seeing her anywhere, Carrie figured she must be in the medical center. She made her way there, lost in her thoughts. She passed someone now and then, but her mind was focused mainly on Kelso. He'd told her he was still in love with her. After five whole years? She knew he'd practically hero-worshipped her as they grew up, and hell, Carrie had hero-worshipped him in return, but he did need to move on. If she could stay by his side for 20 years, surely there was another woman out there prepared to spend another 60 years with him.
Carrie reached the medical center, and saw Chase doing doctor stuff over a patient in a bed, but Carrie couldn't see who it was. "Chase, have you seen Juliet?"
Chase turned around, and Carrie was taken aback ever so slightly to see Zoe in the bed. Who had she expected? "Yeah, she's just in the other room. Hang on, I'll just go get her." Chase hurried off through a door opposite to the one Carrie had come through, leaving Carrie and Zoe alone.
"Hey Zoe," Carrie greeted her as if there was no tension flooding the room whatsoever.
"Hi," Zoe greeted back, with a more cautious tone. She seemed a bit worried that Carrie was gonna try and kill her again.
"Don't worry, I'm not gonna shoot you," Carrie quickly calmed Zoe's fears. "You took my gun, remember? Ben wasn't happy once he heard, refused to give me another one. Said I had to get it back myself."
"I left it at the hatch," Zoe explained. "In the hurry of leaving, I only had time to grab Sawyer's gun."
"That's alright, I'm not all too big on the whole killing thing," replied Carrie.
"Even though you tried to kill me?"
"That was different. I was ... not in a good way, let's put it like that. I was angry, at myself, at you, at Richard. Richard mainly."
"But it was me you tried to kill," Zoe said.
"Yeah, there's this thing with Richard. It's not the most useful thing to shoot him." Carrie then added jokingly, "I've tried many times, trust me. Not good."
Zoe smiled slightly. She sighed and looked at her stomach, her hand covering it protectively. Carrie looked at her sympathetically.
"How are you doing, anyway? Richard told me you had issues with the baby." Carrie changed the subject, not wanting to discuss the events of the last time they had met too deeply.
"'Issues' is putting it lightly," Zoe said. "I don't know what's gonna happen, Juliet and Chase won't explain. But there's something going on, and they know what it is. They just refuse to tell me. I wish they'd tell me."
Carrie didn't reply, just looked at Zoe with a peculiar look on her face, as if she was trying to memorize every detail of her. "What?" Zoe demanded.
"Y'know something, Zoe? You kinda remind me of me," Carrie said after a moment or two.
"That's funny, 'cos just the other day, I was thinking how I remind me of me too," Zoe said sarcastically. Carrie laughed.
"That's exactly what I mean, Zoe," she said. "That's the kind of thing I would say. If the situation was different, if I'd been in the crash too, we might have been friends."
Zoe was silent for a moment. "Yeah, I suppose," she agreed, almost reluctantly.
"I don't blame you for hating me, Zoe," Carrie said. "If I were in your position, I'd hate me too."
"What about me?" Zoe looked up at Carrie. "Do you hate me?"
After several moments of thinking, Carrie replied, "no. No, I don't hate you, Zoe. I just hate what you did. But who can blame you? The guy's hot."
Before Zoe could reply, Juliet came in. "You wanted me, Carrie?"
"Yeah, can I speak to you alone?" Carrie didn't want to discuss Kelso in front of Chase and Zoe.
"Sure," Juliet smiled, and the pair went into the room Juliet had just come from, as Chase went to continue doctoring Zoe.
"Did you know?" Carrie demanded as soon as the door was shut. "Did you know Kelso was on the plane?"
"Yes," Juliet replied. "I only didn't tell you because I didn't think it'd be a good idea if you went to their camp to see him."
"Like I'd do that?" Carrie said. "I do have a bit of common sense, you know. But I was just talking to him, and he only went and told me he's still in love with me."
Juliet looked surprised. "Really? That's awkward."
"I know. I still love him, just not in the way I did." Before Carrie could continue, her phone vibrated in her pocket. She took it out and looked at the text from Richard that came up.
Where'd you run off to? Please come back, I'll make mad, passionate love to you if you do.
Carrie grinned, and Juliet recognised it as the grin she saved just for Richard. "Go on, bugger off," she said.
"I'll come back in a few hours," Carrie said. "Need to keep my eye on Kelso. He can do stupid things if I'm not there to watch him."

Day 68
Juliet arrived in Jo’s cell and held up a pair of handcuffs and that damned black blindfold. “Ben will be here to see you a little later, he says he has something important to discuss with you. He's given me the okay to take you to see Jack right now, but there are some conditions…” Juliet said quietly. It made her uncomfortable to treat a colleague like a prisoner, but orders were orders.
Jo held out her hands for the handcuffs. “It’s okay.” She allowed herself to be blindfolded and guided down the long hallway. Juliet pushed her gently through a door and removed her blindfold. Jo heard the click as the door shut behind her. Behind a glass wall identical to her own, Jack and Kelso sat huddled in a corner, conversing in hushed tones.
Jo rushed to meet Jack, tears stinging her eyes. She raised her hands, still cuffed, to meet his against the glass.
“Jack!” she cried happily. Jack tried hard to contain his boyish grin and failed miserably. It was the first time they had seen each other in more than three weeks, and his happiness and relief at seeing her was overwhelming. His hands sought hers against the glass, and tears filled his eyes.
“Are you all right, Jo? What have they done to you?” His expression was one of concern and what Jo could only describe, joyfully, as love.
Jo nodded vigorously. “I'm okay.” she whispered. She glanced around the room. She knew the Others would be watching. "They brought me to them to conduct medical research with Chase and Juliet. I had quite a bit of freedom until I lost my temper with Ben, and now I'm in your situation."
"Ben?"
"You know him as Henry Gale." Jo craned her neck to see the figure behind Jack, noticing Kelso for the first time. Kelso met her glance and waved wearily.
"Kelso? What are you doing here?" Jo asked, astonished. As far as she knew, only Jack was part of Ben's kidnapping plot. But then, as the perpetual outsider, she was always left in the dark. Then her eyes lit up as she remembered her good friends among the tail section survivors. "You found the survivors? Libby and Eko and Bernard?"
Jack decided the direct approach was best. He didn't know how much time they would have together. "Libby and Ana Lucia are dead. I will tell you everything when we have more time together."
"Libby?" Tears returned to Jo's eyes. She and Libby had bonded in the early days after the crash. She had to shake the memories away and grieve later. She knew that she and Jack had limited time as well. She wiped her tears away and returned her attention to the task at hand.
"It is very important that you do what Ben asks you, Jack. If you do, you will save lives."
"What is he going to ask me to do?"
Jo shook her head and glanced towards the camera in the corner of Jack's cell. Her eyes pleaded with him without saying a word. "I can't tell you yet."
Juliet chose that moment to reappear. "Time is up," she announced as she replaced the blindfold over Jo's eyes. Jack pounded on the glass wall angrily. "No!" he yelled. "Don't take her away!"
Kelso sprang up and forcibly pulled Jack away from the glass. "Don't make things worse, Jack," he advised quietly. He took the opportunity to speak to Jo. "Tell Carrie I need to see her again."
Jo acknowledged his request with a nod, although she was confused. She was with the tail section survivors for such a short time that she hadn't gotten to know him very well, but she knew that he was pining for a long lost love named Carrie. She couldn't possibly be Richard's Carrie, could she? The puzzle pieces didn't fit. But then again, she had discovered Chase, her former colleague at St. Sebastien's and, later, Jack's rival and her fiance, living and working among the Others in the Staff. Anything was possible on this island; very little actually surprised her anymore.
Juliet guided Jo away from Jack. As he watched the two women walk away he was overwhelmed with mixed emotions. He still loved Jo, and always had, but his jealousy over Boone was constantly on his mind. And then there were his feelings for Kate, with whom he had grown close in Jo's absence, even against his will. He had honestly believed that he would never see Jo again.
Above all, what did these people want with him and Kelso and Kate and Sawyer? He needed answers, and knew that Jo could give them. She was the only one he trusted in this place, and he needed to see her alone.

Carrie arrived back at her house, and was greeted by Richard. She was glad that she still, after all this time, had the same feeling in her stomach every single time she set eyes on him. She was glad it was different to the one she had when she first saw Kelso for the first time in five years. When she saw him, it had been like something was dragging her back to her old life, back to everything that had happened before. But she was relieved that it was Kelso she had seen - no-one else would have made her feel happy.
"I just read Kelso's file while you were coming back," said Richard. He stood up from the sofa and went over to Carrie. She didn't reply, merely looked at him in a questioning kind of way. "Wanna tell me why you just rushed off to see your ex? Someone who, according to this, you remember as a drunk."
"I needed to see him," Carrie explained. Why was Richard so annoyed with her? "He was in a bad state when I left, I wanted to make sure he was okay."
"If you care so much about him, why'd you leave then?"
"You know why, Richard," Carrie said this quietly, as if it was a forbidden subject.
"You're so intimidated by your mother that you took up a mysterious job? Carolyna, that's exactly what she wanted, to imtimidate you. And you let her win. Well done."
Carrie was hurt and shocked. Why on earth was Richard being so aggresive? "Don't you dare," Carrie warned him in a low voice. "Don't you even think of bringing Mum into this. You know what I feel about her, what she feels about me. She isn't even worth mentioning."
"Maybe it's time you mentioned her, then. Five years is enough hostility, she's your own mother, for God's sake!" Richard found himself unintentionally raising his voice. Even he didn't know why he was so angry at Carrie.
"Richard, you have no idea!" Carrie's voice also raised in volume. "You have no idea what she put me through, what she said to me. I explained it to you, but you can never, ever understand how terrified I am of her. And sure, maybe that is what she wanted. But who cares? She's a monster, not worth a second thought!"
"And your precious Kelso isn't worth you staying there for?"
"No! He was my childhood sweetheart, he'll always be special to me, but he's never going to have anything on you, Richard. I love you, Kelso could never even try to replace you."
"But do you love him?"
"Oh, Richard, don't do this ..." Carrie turned her back to him, trying to resist answering the question. But he just asked her again.
"Carrie, tell me! Do you love him?" Richard demanded, almost at the top of his voice.
"YES!" Carrie spun around on the spot to face him again, shouting at the very top of her voice. "Yes, Richard, I love him! I will always love him, but it's you I wanna be with!" Carrie then lowered her voice back down to normal volume and said, "but now, I dunno. He wouldn't get ratty just because I'd gone over to see an old friend I hadn't seen in five years."
"Oh, so now you've changed your mind?" Richard shouted. "Pathetic!"
Rage boiled inside Carrie now, he knew that along with worthless, pathetic was one of the words that got to her. Especially when it was aimed at her. She slapped him hard across the cheek, a red mark appearing where she struck.
Sharp pain surged through Richard's cheek as she hit him. He looked at her, realising what he had just said to her. He couldn't even understand himself why he'd said what he had. Ever since Mary had appeared to him in a dream, he'd been seeing everything differently. In a way he didn't want to.
Richard grabbed Carrie and fiercly, he kissed her. She drew away, too annoyed right now to kiss him. He pulled her in again, wanting to make up for what he had said. But Carrie drew away again, refusing to give in to him. She turned her back on him and left the house for Hydra.
"You realise how much you've embarassed the school, Carolyna?" The headteacher, Mrs James, looked sternly at the rather small figure in front of her, a girl of only eight. "Setting the fire alarm off on purpose, and summoning the fire brigade, is not the smartest thing to do now, is it?"
"I didn't do it, Mrs James, honestly," Carrie's eyes pleaded, but she knew the stern headmistress would never believe her. She'd been caught in the act - even though she hadn't actually done the act.
"Carolyna, I'm going to have to phone your mother," Mrs James said.
"No!" Carrie was desperate for the head to believe her. "Please, don't tell Mum! I'll do anything. I'll clean the school gutters, I'll do detention every day for the rest of the year! Just don't tell my mum, please."
Before either could say anything, an eight-year-old boy with short brown hair entered the room - Michael Kelso. Even Mrs James, having the whole school to look over, knew that Carrie and Kelso were never seen apart. "Mrs James, it was me," Kelso said immediately. "I set off the alarm, but she said she'd take the blame."
Mrs James looked studiously at Kelso. The devotion to each other between the two friends was one she had rarely seen in adults, let alone eight year old children. He was obviously lying to protect her. "Very well," she said finally. "Carolyna, you are free to go. Michael, I'd like to speak to you."
Kelso came out of the headmistress' office 15 minutes later, and Carrie was still waiting for him. "Dad's gonna be really annoyed when I get back," he said.
"Thanks, Kels." Carrie grinned, and hugged her friend. They set off down the corridor together. "That was really sweet of you. What did she say?"
"Said I gotta do detention for two weeks," replied Kelso. Carrie didn't reply, and the pair left the building and set off towards their houses, only two streets away.
After several minutes of silence, Carrie said, "You know I didn't do it, right?"
"Yeah," said Kelso.
"It was Jimmy Parker. He set the alarm to go five minutes later, so I'd get caught instead."
"Don't worry, I'll get him for you tomorrow," Kelso said. "I'll give him a right bashing."
"Ooh, Kels, don't. You'll get in worse trouble. Make him pay for it slowly," Carrie added on the last bit with a laugh.
"You're worth it, Lynny," he smiled.

Day 68
Zoe took a lot of time to think about what Jo had told her, and after giving it a lot of thought, she decided to go along with what she suggested, to truly act like one of them. To be another. Zoe had already built up a lot of guilt from lying to her friends, and now she was going to have to really brush up on her acting skills to fool not just the Others, but Jack too, and make him think that she really, truly felt that she belonged here.
That's why when Carrie made an appearance at the Hydra, and talked to her when Chase left to fetch Juliet, Zoe managed to fake her way through the entire conversation, remaining calm as possible, although feeling blood boil through her body at the memory of her time in a cell, and Carrie having been the one to tend her - the one who had chained her up and treated her pretty much like an animal, Zoe surprised herself with how calm she had remained, and forced herself to stay still in bed, an explosive of emotions she held back, fear, anger and humiliation. Of course, she understood why Carrie had acted out, and tried to kill her, but after all, she only did that as a result of Zoe's revenge for hoe the Others had treated her.
Over the past few days Zoe had remained bed bound, true to Jo's word, Juliet had been an excellent doctor in every way that could be asked for. Juliet even informed Zoe of everything reassuring, like the arrival of Jack, although she held back informing her of Sawyer and Kate's arrival too.
"Does he know yet?" Zoe asked.
"Not yet, but I am telling him today. There was an incident yesterday - he almost flooded this place in an escape attempt. First he needs to be told some things, and then he will know all about you." Juliet promised.
"What kind of things does he need to know?" Zoe asked, frowning.
"How we know everything about him, about every person associated with his life and whether they are ok or not." Juliet explained. Zoe didn't quite get what she meant, but was satisfied enough with the answer.
"Juliet - can I see him? Can I talk to him? On my own?" Zoe asked. Juliet frowned. She knew Ben wouldn't be keen on the idea - at least not having them talk together alone.
"I can't make any promises, but I'll do my best." Juliet replied. Zoe nodded in understanding, and Juliet left the room again, leaving Zoe alone, which was fine, as she was exhausted, and needed to rest, and falling asleep with others in the room was rather unsettling.
Juliet had left the room to the survallience room, where Ben was resided.
"Ben, can I have a word?" Juliet asked. Ben swivled round in his chair.
"Yes Juliet?" He asked.
"Zoe. She wants to see Jack. To talk with him alone." Juliet explained.
"Sorry, I can't let that happen." Ben rejected.
"You have the survillence cameras. I can put her in the room opposite Jack's cell. You'll hear everything she and he have to say to each other." Juliet pointed out. "I'll tell her the cameras are off if you are that insecure." Juliet offered. Ben thought for a moment.
"Ok, do it, if you think it will help." Ben replied finally. Juliet nodded and left to return to the medical room.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When Juliet returned to the medical room, Zoe was asleep, relieved that she was getting the rest she needed, Juliet carried on with some research, specifically for now, going over Zoe and Ben's medical files, working out what more she could do for them to rescue them. Juliet knew that even if surgery with Zoe was successful, the battle wasn't over yet. There was still the fact that she had to decrease the chances of pre-eclampsia turning into full on eclampsia, which involved performing an early cesearian, which could lead to almost any medical problems with the baby, and possibly Zoe, let alone that all women so far had died by their third-trimester.
Four hours later, Zoe woke slowly, and grogilly, a little disoriented, and forgetting temporarily where she was, dazed and confused, Juliet had to spend ten mintues calming her down, and explain to her that Ben had approved of Zoe's request.
"Thanks for organising this." Zoe smiled, and she tried to slide out of bed, but her legs were weak, and buckled right away under the weight of her body. Zoe paniced while Juliet eased her into a wheel chair, knowing that this meant the cyst on her spinal sac was getting more aggressive. Zoe read the worry and anxiousness on Juliet's face.
"It's getting worse isn't it?" Zoe asked seriously. Juliet nodded. Pretty soon, Zoe wouldn't have any feeling in her legs unless Jack did something about it. Juliet wheeled Zoe down the hall, she was able to get away with not blindfolding her now, besides, it would only cause uneccessary stress, and Zoe knew the brief layout of the Hyrda anyway.
When Zoe entered the room Carrie had mostly visited Zoe in before when she was the one being kept in the cell, she saw two men in the cell she once resided in. She glanced at the chains on the ceiling, and they sent shivers down her spine.
Jack was pacing his cell, agitated and Kelso, whom Zoe had recognised after asking her about Carrie was slumped moodily in the corner. He glanced up at Juliet's and Zoe's arrival. Jack stopped in his tracks too, staring in shock and anger at the sight of them both. Juliet didn't say anything to either of the men. Zoe glanced at the camera in the corner of the room.
"It's off." Juliet lied reassuringly smoothly, but full on convinction.
"You have ten minutes." Juliet told her in low whispers. "Make it quick, and only tell things about yourself, limit yourself to what you tell them about us." Zoe nodded and Juliet left, shutting the door behind her.
"Hello Jack." Zoe smiled weakly.
"What have they done to you?" Jack demmanded, his voice strangled.
"They haven't done anything to me." Zoe breathed, she found it difficult to talk without taking frequenter intakes of breath. "In fact, they've been really good. I'm sick Jack. I need help. More specifically yours." Jack blinked at her with a blank expression.
"What's wrong with you? Why are you in a wheel chair?" He asked with concern on his face.
"I can't remember what they told me it was called, but the main big problem at the moment is a big cyst on my...spinal sac?" Zoe started to explain, struggling to remember what Juliet had told her. Jack nodded, understanding.
"It's not just my life at stake Jack. I'm pregnant." Zoe added There was a pause.
"How far along?" Jack asked quietly as he absorbed everything she told her.
"Over a week now. Won't be long until it's two." Zoe told him.
"Who's is it?" Jack asked. Zoe hesitated, reluctant to tell him, she didn't know Kelso much and didn't really want to divulge eveything to him too, it was bad enough she had to confide in Jack. She swallowed, her throat dry and raw.
"Charlie's." Zoe reluctantly replied finally. Jack nodded and remained silent, Zoe could see he was busy processing all the information, his head was bowed, staring at the floor. Zoe's eyes were full of sadness as she watched Jack, knowing how he was feeling, trapped, and hopeless.
"Will you help me, Jack?" Zoe asked, both eyebrows raised with hope. "Jo, Juliet and Chase have said they'd help you." Jack looked up, his hands were both placed on the glass wall which he leaned on. Zoe and Jack both stared into each others eyes.
"Of course I will." Jack replied, and as he responded, Juliet opened the door and wheeled Zoe out without a word. As Juliet wheeled Zoe down the corridor, she asked how it went.
"Did you say everything you needed to say?" Juliet asked.
"Well, no, but I heard what I needed to hear." Zoe replied truthfully, relieved that she hadn't fully had to lie to Jack in just how commited she was to the Others just yet.

Day 69
Ben sauntered into Jo’s aquarium with a smug expression. “I’ve just paid a visit to your friend Jack. He couldn’t believe the Red Sox won the World Series.”
“I have no idea what you’re talking about,” Jo replied dully, and turned her back to Ben.
Ben pulled a chair up and laid his messenger bag beside it. He knocked on the glass with his knuckles to get Jo’s attention. “I have a proposal for you, Jo. You might want to pay attention.”
Jo continued to sit with her back against the glass and folded her arms across her chest like a spoiled child. The Others she could easily pretend to get on well with, but she didn’t want to hear anything Benjamin Linus had to say.
He rapped again on the glass. “Did you ever wonder why you happened to know your way around the island so well? Did you think it was only because John Locke taught you so well?” Ben laughed at the thought.
Jo turned slowly to face Ben, her eyes questioning him. The island had felt strangely familiar to her from day one. Even in the moments when she had felt hopelessly lost, a comforting feeling of being very close to home had always lingered.
“Locke really did teach me a lot,” Jo responded haughtily.
“What if I told you that you had been on this island before? That you lived here, and went to school here, and had a family here?”
“I’d say you were lying, Ben. It’s what you do.”
Ben smiled enigmatically. “Take some time to think about it, Jo.” He rose from his chair and reached for his messenger bag.
“Is that all you came here for? To tease me with weird riddles?”
“No,” he admitted. “I came to give you your freedom back. I’ve been watching you, and I know that you have been cooperating as much as your conscience allows you to. Our little ‘squabble’ aside, you have behaved exactly as you should.”
Jo stared at him, aghast. She nearly killed him and he called it a ‘squabble’?
Ben continued. “You are free to leave your cell. You’ll stay with Juliet in proper quarters until after the surgeries, and then you’ll come back to the village with us. Dr. Shephard will likely be joining us.”
Jo didn’t trust a word Ben said, but she thanked him anyway. “And Zoe? You’ll make sure she leaves the island as soon as she’s recovered?”
Ben cocked his head and considered her request for a moment. “Yes, Zoe will have the option to leave. You have my word.” He unlocked the door to Jo’s cell. “Think about what I’ve said, Joanna. I have answers for you, when you’re ready to seek them.”
As soon as Ben left, Jo crept towards the door. She had learned to place little faith in Ben’s word, and was surprised to discover that he actually had released the lock. She smiled gratefully at the camera in the corner of the cell, knowing Ben was probably watching, and walked out of the door. Now that there was no need for that bloody blindfold, she could learn her way around the Hydra properly – and steal some time with Jack. But as she rounded the first corner of the hallway, she ran straight into Chase. Caught off guard, Jo lost her balance. Chase steadied her, then kept his hands on her arms. Their faces were only a few inches apart.
“Hello, Jo,” he spoke in that devilishly seductive voice he knew Jo loved. “I knew Ben was going to let you out, but I had no idea he would do it so soon.”
He was obviously pleased to see her. Jo’s expression softened. The last time she had seen Chase, he was angry, and ever since then Juliet had been the one to bring her meals. Apparently, he had forgiven her for asking about Jack. It was a big relief; having Chase on her side again could only help her to secure her escape from the island.
“Will you show me around the station?” Jo asked him, hopefully.
He slid his hand into hers in response. “Of course,” he agreed without hesitation.

Day 69
Zoe was bed bound again. She couldn't walk much still and she felt weak, breathing on her own was difficult, and she had machines supporting her now. Her eyes were sunken with dark circled, and with the oxygen mask over her face, and tubes up her nose, Zoe felt alien, isolated and strange. She drifted often in and out of sleep, a mixture of tranquilizer and painkillers in her IV.
Juliet came and went, and Zoe occasionally noticed her walk by with trays of food. Food. Zoe hadn't tasted food in over 24 hours, she was being fed through a drip now, since relying on the oxygen mask to breathe.
Zoe had lost track of the days for months now, she hadn't a clue what the date was, but at this time she didn't really care. She just wanted to be better, for her baby's sake more then her own.
Her eyes felt heavy and stung as she slowly blinked, the blinking so slow that Jo appeared in front of her when her eyes opened again.
"Hey." Zoe greeted, her voice muffled through the oxygen mask.
"Hey Zoe. How are you doing?" Jo asked kindly as she moved a chair to sit down beside Zoe's bed, being able to tell right away that things weren't improving. Zoe was in desperate need of the surgery.
"Been better." Zoe's voice muffled again, it was easy to tell she was struggling to talk, and Jo picked up on this quickly.
"How about I ask you yes or no questions, and you squeeze my hand once for yes and two for no?" Jo asked, taking a firm grip of Zoe's hand. Zoe squeezed her hand once. Yes.
"Okay. Has Juliet been treating you well?" Jo asked. Zoe squeezed her hand once.
"Good. Jack's here you know. Have you seen him yet?" Jo asked. Zoe squeezed her hand once. "Me too." Jo told her. "I managed to get some time alone with him. Well, him and that other guy, Kelso. I couldn't tell him much though, not knowing they were watching." Zoe gave Jo a significant look.
"We are going to get you some help soon Zoe, Jack will help and he will make you better, and your baby and you'll have nothing to worry about. You and your baby are going to be fine, ok?" Zoe didn't squeeze her hand this time, she felt a familiar surge of fear spread through her body, and simply nodded at Jo. The idea of surgery was still frightening, so many things could go wrong, and even though Zoe knew Jack was famous for his accurate surgeries, there was still a slight chance something could go wrong, and that slight chance was enough to worry her.
Of course Jo didn't know yet who Zoe had slept with to be pregnant. The only person Zoe had told was Jack, and of course, Keslo overheard, and if Juliet was true to her word, the Others didn't know yet. Zoe wasn't sure whether she was confident enough to tell Jo about the father yet. It wasn't hard to know whom Zoe had feelings for back at the beach, but Charlie had shown previously little interest in her that way. More of a friendly companion, he seemed more devoted to Claire afterall. Zoe wasn't sure whether she was ready to tell Jo yet. Jack was different. She wasn't as close to him, yes they were friends, but detached enough for Zoe to see him as her doctor, and she assumed doctor-paient confidentiality with him, and the look on his face when she talked to him, the tone seemed to confirm that, which gave her some comfort.
After a bit more comfort talk from Jo, she left, she had just fully explored the Hydra before she visited Zoe, unknown to her of course, as she was oblivious to Jo being kept prisoner over the last few days. Zoe suspected she might have gone to visit Jack...or see Chase and maybe find Juliet.
When not sleeping, Zoe spent a lot of time thinking, about her life so far on the island, and back home, how nothing was there anymore. Her work, her family and her friends were all gone. What was she going to do when she eventually got herself out of all of the mess and got home? No job and most certainly a single parent, things weren't looking any better then where she was now, even if she was full of health. Despite her freedom, she was still a prisoner to the Others. She still had the chip in her neck and was still restricted from certain areas of the island. Pretty much the Hydra and the village was all she was allowed, and once she had recovered, she knew this restrictions would remain the same, unless of course she accepted where she was and who she was becoming. During these thoughts, Zoe sank back into more deep dreams. Dreams where she was sat on a porch, similar to one of the houses in the village, in a rocking chair, a baby in her arms and lap, and she hummed a song, the baby boy loooked at her dependantly as she fed him a bottle.
The sound of a gun cocking came out of no-where and a over muscular, blondish man dressed in camoflage army style gear stared at her smugly, his eyes cold and bore into her bright, wide and scared ones as he had a gun on her and her baby.
"Where's Ben?" He drawled in a demmanding tone.
Zoe woke up in a cold sweat.
