Carrie made her way back into the Hydra station, where Kelso and Jack were being kept. All she wanted right now was to see Kelso. Why had Richard been so jealous about Kelso? It wasn't like she was gonna go back to him, Kelso was a drunk and had been a loser pretty much his whole life ... but Richard, he was the image of perfection. He looked amazing, he was the perfect boyfriend, he loved Carrie immensely - and, of course, he was brilliant in bed. Okay, he did have his flaws. He'd cheated on her, but he'd still managed to get her to forgive him. He'd got jealous over an ex, but surely that just meant he didn't want to risk losing her?
She arrived just outside Kelso and Jack's cell, and saw Juliet standing outside a nearby door - the men's toilets. "Kelso needed the toilet," Juliet explained when Carrie looked at her questioningly.
"Mind if I take over? I need to talk to Kelso privately." Juliet nodded, and allowed Carrie to stand outside the door. As soon as she had gone, Carrie went into the toilets. She was slightly apprehensive - it was the men's toilets after all. Kelso was standing at the sink, washing his hands. He saw Carrie come in, and turned to face her.
"Carrie? What's up?"
Carrie didn't reply, but went over to him and turned the tap off. She immediately pulled him into a passionate kiss. He placed his hands on her waist and kissed her back, before pulling away and saying, "what about Richard?"
"Shush, Michael," Carrie used his first name for the first time in years. She kissed him again, and neither of them held back. Kelso pulled her in tightly, and they both fell down onto the floor as they fumbled with each other's clothing.
Carrie was sitting quietly at her desk, finishing her coursework. She was interrupted suddenly when her mobile rang, Kelso's name flashing up on the screen. She answered it. "Hello?"
Kelso was out, Carrie could tell by the background noise - possibly at the pub, due to the racous drunken shouting which she could've made out if she wanted to. Kelso's words came slurred and loud, "Carrie! Can you pick me up? There's a riot - taxis don't wanna come."
Carrie sighed. Looked like she'd have to finish her work another time. "Alright, where are you?"
"Royal Oak," came the reply, hardly distinguishable between the shouting of others.
"Alright, give me ten minutes, I'll be there." Carrie hung up, grabbed her car keys, and left the house, being careful not to let her mum hear her, who was in the bath.
Half an hour later, Carrie was at Kelso's flat, supporting his drunken figure as she fumbled with his keys to get the door open. She managed to get him inside, and tried to get him to sit on the sofa, but he refused. She got a glass of water and gave it to him. "Here, this'll stop you getting a hangover. Or at least, make it not so bad."
Kelso took the glass and downed it in one as if it were beer. "'M I gonna wet the bed now?" He laughed.
"No, Kelso, you're not," Carrie replied. "Come on, let's get you to bed." She helped him find his way into his bedroom, where he fell on the bed and went to sleep without even getting undressed.
The next morning, at around half eleven, Kelso came out of his bedroom. Carrie was sitting on the sofa, reading a book as he came in. She immediately put it down and went over to him. "How are you feeling?" She asked.
"Head hurts a bit," Kelso said. "You're right, drinking water does help." He mocked dying of dehydration, and they both laughed.
Carrie smiled at her best friend, and pulled him into a hug. He hugged her back, and they stood their in silence for a few minutes. Then Kelso broke the silence, saying what he'd wanted to say almost his whole life, but had never been able to say.
"I love you," he whispered into her ear.
Carrie smiled. "I love you too," she whispered back.

Day 70
It was nightfall, the blackhole of a sky glistened in an array of millions of glowing stars, the occaasional shooting star could be spotted. It was the most wonderful and magical thing Zoe had ever seen. The air was warm, but she could feel the breeze dance around her, and before her was a fenced off children's park. Zoe walked towards it, a warm feeling soothing through her body as she stared at the children's play equipment - swings, slides, see-saw and a round-about as well as a large climbing frame.
Zoe was aware that she was also surrounded by houses, her neighbourhood, her home. The atmosphere changed suddenly all around her. Light clouds sailed over the shimmering night sky, and the breeze became more active, the swings started to swing slowly, and the wind spoke to her, mixing with the sounds of the old rusty swings as they swung higher and higher, the sound of the round-a-bout twisting slowly around and the see-saw going up, down, up down. It was an impossibe sight. The wind was too light to cause such actions, yet no-one was there.
The wind spoke to her.
"They are coming. They won't stop until they get what they want."
Zoe glanced around her surroundings. No-one else was here. They were either tucked up in bed or else where on assignments. She frowned, feeling uneasy, the hairs stood up on the back of her neck as the playground appartus became steadily more active. She backed away slowly toward her house when she suddenly bumped into something, she heard the sky and wind sliced at the sound of a baby's urgent cry, Zoe turned round, she had bumped into a baby's pram. Her baby's. She felt her lip quivver anxiously as she peered over into the pram, supressing a scream, despite her jaw dropping, no sound came out. There was no baby inside, but something liquid that she couldn't see properly in the moonlight. Zoe swore she could also faintly hear the nursery rhyme somewhere 'ring around the roses' sung by children, in innocent choir like voice, which simply didn't fit with the sounds of the winds around her, or the setting of where she was.
Zoe dipped her hands into it, the sounds of a baby's cry for attention still came from the crib, but there was nothing there but luke warm, thick liquid which Zoe's hands became submereged in. When Zoe brought her hands to her eye line, there was enough moon light to see it was blood. Zoe stumbled backwards in shock into the body of a stranger, who restrained her and covered her mouth with one of his hands, ssshing into her ear softly, mockingly and smugly. He turned himself and her around, lifiting her easily as if she were a rag doll. She was surrounding by a small group of men dressed in army style camoflage gear, much like in her dream she had had, but none looked like the cold man she had faced before.
Two of the army type men had a man, whom's body structure was strangley familiar, but his head was covered by a hood over his head, his hand tied behind his back, the two men whom held him by a tight grip on eac shoulder, the prisoner was silent, Zoe only assumed he must be gagged under the hood.
"Tell us where Ben is." A familair cold, serious voice whispered into her ear, and Zoe realised it was the same man from her dream, causing her to gasp as best she was allowed with her mouth being covered. She tried to speak, but it was muffled.
"Scream, and I kill you." The voice of the man that restrained her warned and he let go of her mouth.
"I don't know." She whispered, shivvering, the air suddenly felt so cold. In response, the two men removed the hood of the man they held prisoner, revealing him to be Charlie. Zoe gasped again, tears pricking in the corner of her eyes.
"Don't hurt him!" Zoe pleaded. "Don't you dare hurt him!"
"Tell us where Ben is and he goes free." The voice of her captor bargained.
"Maybe she doesn't know." One of her captor's buddies suggested.
"She knows." Zoe's captor ignored. "Tell me where Benjamin Linus is!"
"I don't know" Zoe insisted, tears were streaming now, and she spluttered for breath as she forgot to breathe. A gun fired from no-where, and Charlie's sharp out-take of a painful breath was the last she heard escape Charlie's lips before he collapsed on the ground, dead.
"Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!" Zoe screamed, as she bolted up right in her bed, the familiar cold sweat flowing all over her body, she was shaking violently this time. Juliet ran to her promptly to calm her down.
"It's ok, it was just a dream!" Juliet spoke soothingly. Zoe struggled to breathe more, completely panicked. The dream had felt so real. Zoe was unable to talk to Juliet, her mouth covered by her oxygen mask, which, although was helping her breathe, made her feel suffocated, and musky and moist, like the hand of the savage captor covering her mouth in her dream. Not that this mattered anyway. She wouldn't have told Juliet about her dream, she was slightly embarrased, as well as she didn't really have much to say. She was too anxious to getting the surgery out of the way to console herself with holding up any form of casual conversation, unless it were with a true friend, like Jo, or reassuring medical jargon from Jack Sheppard.
"I have to take Jack and Kelso some food. Will you be ok here for ten minutes on your own? I could get Jo or Chase if needs be." Juliet asked. Zoe nodded that she would be ok, and Juliet smiled at her, and left the room. Zoe lay back, staring at the discoloured off white ceiling, a few tears had actually trickled down her cheek in response to the terrifying dream of loosing Charlie forever.
Juliet hadn't left long before the sounds of urgent and rash footsteps invaded the hallway outside, firgures carrying what Zoe could only guess to be a body on some stretcher, but their body shapes were blurred as they past her doorway quickly, presumably to another significant room in the Hydra.
Zoe's eyelids felt heavy gain, allowing herself to forget the curiousness of the people whom had rushed by, she drifted off into another deep sleep.

Carrie opened her eyes, and found herself still on the floor of the men's toilets, wrapped in Kelso's embrace. She looked over at him, to find he was watching her, with what one could only describe as adoration in his eyes.
"What was that for?" He asked, barely whispering.
Carrie smiled mischeviously. "I dunno," she replied, before leaning over and kissing him, softer this time. Kelso gently stroked her waistline.
Carrie released the kiss suddenly, and they both froze. The clanging of a door opening and closing was heard, and footsteps lead down the corridor, past the cell, and towards the toilets. They both shot up and grabbed their clothes, and dashed into the nearest cubicle. Kelso sat on the closed toilet, and Carrie sat on his lap, careful not to let her legs near the ground.
They both sat tensely as they heard someone come in to the bathroom, and enter the cubicle next to them. Carrie looked at Kelso and bit her lip, trying to hide a giggle. He kissed her, stopping either of them making any noise.
They heard the person wash their hands and leave the room, so they quickly jumped up and got dressed. "That was a close one," Carrie laughed as they exited the cubicle, but then they both froze as they saw realised that whoever had come in, hadn't yet left.

Day 70-Night
Jo curled up in her bed and fought the tears that threatened to spill any moment as she reflected on the day's dramatic events. Now that Ben had given her freedom to roam the Hydra, Jo spent most of her time either tending to Zoe or watching Jack and Kelso and Kate and Sawyer from the monitoring room to make sure that they were treated decently. Every time she tried to sneak into Jack's cell, or to Sawyer and Kate's cages, either Chase or Tom appeared out of nowhere to distract and prevent her. Eventually she gave up in frustration, and resorted to watching her friends onscreen. Ben often joined her in the room, and Jo forced herself to be civil to him as they discussed the upcoming surgeries. Jo hadn't yet worked up the courage to ask Ben what he meant when he said she had lived on the island before; she wasn't sure she wanted to know the answer.
She feared they were running out of time to save Zoe, and wondered why Ben was waiting so long to allow them to perform the surgery. Yet she knew very well that persuasion was wasted on Ben, so instead she watched and waited.
That morning she had wandered into the monitoring room alone and was horrified to see Ben viciously beating Sawyer with his telescopic baton. She sprinted through the door, hoping to get to them in time to stop Ben before he killed Sawyer, but as usual Chase intercepted her in the hallway. This time, Jo knew immediately something was very wrong. Chase wore white surgical scrubs which were splattered with blood. His face was pale, and his expression serious. He gripped Jo's arms.
"Colleen has been shot by your people. I need your help!"
"We're going to need Jack as well. Let me get him," Jo suggested coolly. "We'll meet you in the operating room."
"I've already sent Juliet for him. I need you to come with me now, Jo. You'll see him when we get there."
Jo nodded, recognizing the urgency in his voice. Together, they raced to the operating room. Jo hurriedly put on her own white scrubs and washed up while Chase did what he could to staunch Colleen's bleeding. Neither of them were ER doctors; like Juliet, they were primarily laboratory doctors. If they were going to save Colleen's life, they needed Jack's operating room expertise.
Moments later, Juliet arrived with Jack. She immediately went to Colleen's bedside and left Jack to scrub up by Jo's side.
He glanced at Jo with concern. "Hey," he said under his breath. "Are they still keeping you in a cell?"
Jo shook her head. "No, they've let me out. But they won't let me see you. They've made it impossible for us to ever be alone, until now."
"Ben told me I could go home, if I cooperated with him."
Jo laughed bitterly. "Ben lies."
Before he could respond, Jack's gaze wandered over to the two spinal x-rays posted on the whiteboard near the sink. He pointed to the left one. "That has to be Zoe's. It's worse than I thought. But the other one...that's definitely not Zoe..." his voice trailed off.
Jo held her breath. Jack wasn't supposed to know about Ben's tumor, not yet. The time wasn't right, and if she interfered with Ben's calculated plan she knew it would come back to haunt her.
"Who am I really here to save, Jo?" Jack demanded.
Just then Juliet poked her head into the prep room, flushed with panic. "I need both of you, now!" she cried.
**************************
They couldn't save her. Even with the combined medical knowledge of four brilliant doctors, it simply wasn't enough, and Colleen died. Jo relayed the news to Ben, who insisted on handcuffing Jack to the operating table where her lifeless body lay despite Jo's livid protests. Chase happily obliged.
Ben continued to bark commands to Chase and Juliet. "Take Jo to her quarters. I don't want her here with Shephard." Chase reached for Jo's arm but Jo dodged him and darted across the room to Jack. She stole the briefest of kisses from him as Chase watched, enraged. She did it in front of Chase partly out of spite but mostly because it was her only opportunity to show Jack that she still loved him. Circumstances kept them apart, she whispered to Jack, but she thought about him every moment. He kissed her back, clearly reciprocating her feelings, but as Chase forcibly pulled her away Jack gave her an unsettled, searching gaze that troubled her.
Now she lay in her silent room and waited, wondering what it was about Jack's gaze that had unnerved her so much. Tomorrow would be Colleen's funeral, bringing with it another chance to steal a moment alone with him. Maybe then he would give her an answer.

Day 71
News had travelled back fast and Zoe heard of the 'tragic' loss of one of the Others, Colleen, and even though Zoe found out that it was one of her friends that had done the deed, she didn't smile. She didn't cope with death well afterall, and although she was still uneasy about the Others, she was sympathetic for their loss, afterall, some of them would have been close to her, and Zoe knew how it felt to loose everything all at once.
Zoe was still very un-nerved. She was wondering why she hadn't had surgery yet, what was taking so long. Jo always made her feel calm when she came to visit, but it had been days not that she had been at the Hydra, and nothing had happened yet, and she was rapidly getting worse.
Juliet had left Zoe with Jo temporarily to go see Ben - to try to reason with him, that Zoe needed surgery right away, now, or she could die. She knew the chances of Ben saying yes weren't good, and he would be in a peculiar mood today too with it being the day of the funeral.
Juliet didn't bother wasting time with knocking on the door this time. It was a matter of urgency. She strolled in.
"Ben." She spoke urgently, and Ben turned in his chair.
"Yes?" He answered her.
"When are you planning on allowing the surgery to go forward on Zoe? She is in a critical state, and if she doesn't get help today she has a ninty percent chance of dying." Juliet asked, anger in her tones, and to her suprise, Ben looked at her with an agreeable and empathetic expression.
"I know." He admitted...were those tones of ashame in his voice? "I was hoping to get Jack on board sooner than this, to be able to lure him into my brilliant plan of agreeing to do my surgery quicker. I wanted it done before anyone else got attention. This thing is viciously fatal afterall."
"And so is Zoe's. You aren't the one bed bound, struggling to breathe, having troubling nightmares and unable to walk right now. Zoe is. If this carries on, we will loose her, and it will be your fault. She is supposed to be one of us now Ben. You let Collen go on that operating table before you, surely you can make an acception for Zoe too. You aren't just controlling her life either, there's her baby, and I thought considering why I am even here in the first place, you would want everything that could be done to save her would be done so she could be used to try and make it medically possible to give birth after concieving on this island." Juliet demmanded. Ben nodded in agreement. "Besides, you know Jack would never even considering going through with your surgery without saving his friends first. That was the whole plan with Sawyer and Kate anyway, the same case will lie with Zoe too."
"Alright." Ben agreed. "The surgery can go ahead."
"Thank you Ben!" Juliet responded, not sounding greatful for his response at all, too angry for his unncessary delays.
"After the funeral." Ben added, and Juliet turned to glare at him again. "Oh, and before you go, I'll walk with you, I want to check on my Sophie." Ben stood up and caught pace with her and they walked along the corridors to the medical room, where Zoe was soundly asleep again on one side of the room, and Sophie, still unconcious on the other. Ben glanced at Zoe, it was the first time he had seen her since the day of the escape from the Swan, and he felt surprising pangs of guilt as it really hit home to just how sick she was. He forced back the emotions and went over to Sophie, worried for why she hadn't woken up yet, and Juliet had the same worries, although people had woken up and been fine from comas for longer periods, there was still no accuracy to knowing if there was any brain trauma. Juliet left Ben with Sophie and tottered over to Zoe's side to tend to the IV drip.

As Ben sat by Sophie's side, he stroked a piece of her hair out of her face and tucked it behind her ear, as she lay there. He noticed her making some movement as she started to wake. Sitting he waited for her to open her eyes, and as she did she looked around confused to where she was.
"Hey....." Ben said softly to her as he went to take her hand and hold it. She pulled away and sat up quickly and huddled up in the corner of her bed like a frightened child. "Sophie?" Ben questioned confused to her actions. She looked past Ben seeing another woman laying in a bed sleeping. She assumed she must of been in some kind of hospital. "Sophie?" Ben repeated. "Its Ben.... it's me."
"I don't know you!" she said frightened wondering what the hell has happened.

Earlier that morning, in the hours before dawn, Chase knocked on Jo's door. "It's time," he called to her. She rubbed her eyes sleepily and took the white funeral robe that he offered her. Within moments, they were following a small crowd towards the beach.
Jo watched the Others prepare Colleen's body on the wooden raft by torchlight. Jo shivered. The entire scene felt so strange and foreign, and served to cement in her mind just how different the Others really were. She searched for Jack among the Others and spotted him arriving with Juliet and Ben. She met Jack's eyes and smiled to welcome him. He responded with a curt nod, and continued to converse with Ben. Jo looked away in dismay. Why had he dismissed her so easily when only yesterday he had responded to her kiss with so much longing?
Chase pulled Jo by the hand and settled on a place on the opposite side of the funeral bier from Jack and Juliet. They watched the ceremony unfold together in somber silence.
Once the raft had been set on fire and pushed out to sea, Chase turned to Jo and reached for her hand in an unexpected display of tenderness.
"I know this experience has been difficult for you." He caressed her face softly with his other hand. "But I think you know my feelings for you haven't changed. I still love you, no matter what happens."
Once so charming, Chase had now become moody and unpredictable, and, lately, increasingly obsessive. But there was still a lingering attraction to him that hadn't yet disappeared, and Jo hoped that he loved her enough to help her leave the island with Jack, just like he had helped her escape from the Staff weeks ago. She knew she had to fuel that flame, even when she longed to be with Jack.
She squeezed Chase's hand and smiled at him warmly. "I know."
Chase led Jo back to the Hydra station as the morning sky gradually lightened. His thoughts focused on Jack, and how to take him out of the equation permanently. As long as Jo had feelings for Jack, she would never completely belong to him. It was up to Chase to make sure that they remained apart.
His thoughts were interrupted by Ben's voice as he approached them from behind. "I'd like a few moments alone with Jo, if you don't mind, Robert." Without waiting for a reply, Ben handed his torch to Chase, and motioned for Jo to follow him to his office at the Hydra station.

Ben stood quietly in the corner as Chase checked over Sophie and then glancing other too Ben and took him outside to talk.
"It looks like she has amnesia" As Chase started to explain medical outcomes/reason. Ben stood there as if he was listening but was plotting in his head, where he could go with this.
"And is there chance she could regain her memory?" He questioned butting in as Chase was speaking.
"It's possible. Most people remember in a few days, others take longer. It's too early to tell."
"Fine thats all i wanted to know." he said as he went back in the room. Ben wanted to spend as much time he could with sophie, when he wasn't dealing with other things and before his surgery.

Day 71
Zoe was deep in a somber dream again, dreaming about the same men as her previous ones, when her heart rate suddenly slowed and flat-lined. With Jo away, Juliet and Chase were Zoe's only immediate help. They tried to resussitate her, and managed to get her in a stable condition.
"Get Jack!" Juliet barked at Chase. "We are going to need to operate now!"
"But Ben-" Chase stalled.
"I don't give a s**t what Ben thinks or says right now Chase, go get Jack, or she is going to die." Juliet interrupted, and without another word, Chase darted out the room, returned shortly with Jack, whom turned into doctor phase immediately, and they carted Zoe to the operating room, cleaning themselves down and preparing for surgery.
Jack quickly reviewed her scans before giving instructions to Chase and Juliet whom responded promptly.
"If she dies...I'm not helping Ben." Jack warned seriously, fury in his expression.
"Well, that's ok then Jack, cuz she isn't going to die. You won't let her." Chase muttered warningly.
Zoe was given an anesthetic, and she went under within seconds, and Jack began the insicion on her back to get at the cyst on her spinal sac. Juliet listened intently and did as she was told as Jack gave her quick instructions, Chase helping out.
"Where's Jo?" Jack asked, temporarily distracted.
"She's indisposed at the moment." Juliet replied curtly. Jack nodded and began to continue again, but the machine flat lined again.
"No!" Jack yelled, and he began the resusitating proceedure again with Juliet, however no change was made. Zoe remained lifeless on the table.
"No, no, no!" Jaack shoute as he continued to try and bring back the life in her, but after four minutes there was no change.
"Jack." Juliet began, but Jack ignored her, he continued trying, but there was still no change. "Jack, stop! We've lost her!"
"No, I'm not giving up!" Jack replied stubbornly and determined, Chase tried to pull him off Zoe, but Jack threw him to the floor, and Chase crashed into some of the medical equipment temporarily dazing him, Juliet watched Jack, frozen, unsure of what to do next. Zoe was still lifeless on the table, but Jack wouldn't give it up. A tear broke and streamed down Juliet's cheek as she realised and it sunk in, Zoe was dead.

Ben offered Jo a chair in front of his desk, placed his messenger bag on the floor and pulled out his reading glasses. He pulled a thick manila folder out of his bag.
"Interesting spectacle with Dr. Shephard last night," Ben smirked and glanced at her over the tops of his glasses.
Jo stared at him rudely. "I don't agree with chaining him up like an animal. You'll never get him to operate on you that way, Ben."
Ben put the folder down and smiled at her. "I have other ways. But I didn't bring you here to talk about Jack."
He handed Jo the folder. Her name was on the label. She frowned and raised an eyebrow at him.
"What is this?"
"It's your history," he explained. "Everything you never knew about your past is in here."
An odd chill settled over Jo as she flipped idly through the pages. After a moment, she handed it back to Ben. "I don't want to know."
Ben made a face as if he were explaining something very simple to a wayward child. "You belong on this island, Jo. If you read this, you will understand why. You have to stop fighting it, and accept that you are one of us, and always have been." He looked at her with sudden tenderness, as he often did when he thought Jo wasn't looking. "Please take it with you."
Jo took the folder to the quarters she shared with Juliet and locked herself in her bedroom. She didn't come out until she had devoured the entire file. When she finally stepped outside for some fresh air hours later, she was in a daze. She was so perplexed that she almost didn't recognize Tom when he grabbed her arm and blurted out, "They need you in the operating room. Zoe has flatlined."
Horrified, Jo shook her head to clear her thoughts of all the new information Ben had just presented her with. She would have to absorb all that later. Right now her friend needed her. Jo sprinted towards the operating room and prayed it wasn't too late to save Zoe. Anger mixed with fear as she ran; why on earth had Ben waited so long to operate?
"Not another death," she prayed under her breath. "Please. Not now."

Day 71
Jack barely glanced up when Jo burst into the rooom, and continued resusitating, Chase was getting up, still slightly dazed from hitting his head in the fall, Jo stared at Zoe's lifeless body, adn Juliet had her hands on her face, wishing Jack would stop. There was still no sign of life on the monitor either. Juliet plucked up all her strength and pulled Jack off Zoe.
"Jack." Juliet began again, but Jack struggled against her. "Jack. Stop. It's over. Call it."
"It's not over!" Jack retorted, still struggling against Juliet. "It's not over until I say it's over."
"It's been eight mintues Jack." Juliet tried to reason.
"Guys..." Jo interrupted, and pointed at the monitor. All of a sudden, a single blip appeared, followed shortly by another blip, and they became steadily increasingly larger. Relief was clear on the expressions of both Jo and Jack.
"Go scrub up Jo, I need your help more than anyone." Jack smiled at her, Jo nodded and all four doctors got to work again, closely watched by a smal gathering of Others in the gallery.

René sat her drawing table sketching various flowers she had seen on her most recent walk when there was knock on her door. She pulled back her long sandy brown hair and swirled it into a loose bun poking her pencil through it to hold it in place. Her ivory long fingers readjusted her wedding band that still held near her heart even though it had been years now since Shannon had passed away. She walked over to open the door when there was a second knock. “I’m coming” she said gingerly. She opened the door to see Ben standing anxiously. “Ben! I wasn’t expecting you, what’s going on?” she asked inquisitively. “May I please come in René?” Ben spoke softly and slowly. “Yes, please.” She opened the door for him to enter. Since coming to the island René seemed to get along with most people but was somewhat standoffish to Ben. She appreciated his stature within their community but never understood fully why he treated her with hesitation. “Is this a bad time?” Ben was more polite than usual it seemed “No, not at all, I’m just sketching. I don’t have to meet with Alex until later.” “I just got a message from Goodwin. He verified there are children with the tail section. Looks like Jacob was right in needing you here after all.” He said with a slow tone. “Well, you know me. I’ve been waiting for a chance to get back to my roots. But Ben,” she had to ask the question that had plagued her for the past 5 1/2 years since coming. “Why does Jacob truly want me here?” “We’ll soon see, I must get back now, I’ll tell Alex you won’t be meeting with her today” Ben stepped toward the door to leave. “Thank you Ben” René was skiddish to complete the sentence “I appreciate your confidence” “You’re welcome; I’ll let you know when they arrive.” Ben opened the door and was gone just as quickly as he came. Something stirred in René’s stomach. She couldn’t help but look down and twiddle again with her ring. She wouldn’t let those feelings return. Even if they did, he was not hers to be had. She knew there were higher purposes for her here. She just didn’t know what yet.
DAY 71 René woke up sweating in her bed. Another dream, it was so real this time. “Shannon” was all she could whisper. She quickly grabbed some jeans and a tank top and threw them on. She hated staying at the Hydra station, but she had to see if she could locate Juliet.

Day 71
As Jo quickly donned her white scrubs she experienced a powerful feeling of déjà vu: the last time Jack had refused to give up resuscitating a clinically dead patient had also happened on the Island, not too long ago. It was Charlie Pace, after Ethan had strung him up in a tree. Except that time, it was Jo who had begged Jack to stop pounding on Charlie's lifeless body. Tears welled up in her eyes as she remembered the joy she had felt as Charlie returned to them. It wasn't his time to go.
And now, it wasn't yet Zoe's time to go. A second miracle had occurred. Jo knew, from everything that she had witnessed and from everything that she had read in her own file, that the Island itself had given Zoe a second chance at life.
But Zoe and her baby weren't out of danger yet. The surgery would take some time yet, and they wouldn't know until she woke up - IF she woke up - how her flatlining may have affected her mentally or physically.
Jo pushed aside her emotions and rejoined the team in the operating room. Pride and admiration surged through her as she watched Jack work. The three doctors worked smoothly as a team under his expert direction.
Jack paused briefly to wipe the sweat from his face with his forearm and, glancing upwards, caught sight of Ben watching the operation from the gallery. He was clearly unnerved by Ben's steely stare and his hands shook slightly. Jo had never before seen him unsteady during surgery. Juliet and Chase also paused expectantly, waiting for further directions from Jack.
Jo nudged him gently with her elbow. "Jack, focus." Jack's eyes remained locked on Ben's as if he were challenging him, silently reminding Ben that he would be next on the operating table only if Jack decided to be merciful. The rising tension in the room was palpable.
"Jack!" Jo hissed. "We need you here!"
Jack immediately returned his attention to the surgery. "Chase, I need the vacuum right here. Juliet, prepare the sutures." The medical team resumed their work.
Jo didn't realize she had been holding her breath until she had made the final stitch. She pulled her face mask off and exhaled deeply. The operation was a success, and both Zoe and her baby - against all odds - had survived.
Chase and Juliet took care of the post-operation clean-up while Jo and Jack stepped outside the operating theatre for some much-needed fresh air.
"What happened in there?" Jo demanded angrily. "You lost your focus. I've never seen you do that. You could have made a mistake, Jack, and we would have lost her and the baby."
"It was Ben," he admitted and rubbed the top of his head as he always did when he was in an uncomfortable situation. "I decided in that moment that I'm not going to do his surgery. I'm done here."
Jo placed her hand squarely on Jack's chest. "You have to do the surgery," she said calmly, but forcefully. "I need you to do it. Not for Ben, but for me."
Jack rubbed his head again, confusion clouding his expression. "I thought you hated him as much as I do."
Jo shook her head sadly. "Not anymore."
"What changed your mind?" Jack's expression turned from confusion to distrust. "Why do you want to save him?"
Jo shrugged helplessly. She knew Jack wouldn't understand, and she didn't have the luxury of time to explain everything. "Because he's family," she replied so quietly Jack wasn't sure he had heard her correctly.
Before Jack could respond, Chase popped his head outside the door to the medical center. "Zoe's waking up," he announced. "You should both be there when she does."
Jo avoided Jack's eyes as they returned to the operating room. She wasn't ready to answer his questions; she was still reeling from the recent discovery herself.

Day 72
Zoe woke up. She was in the bed of her house, the one that she had been provided by the Others. There was a crib in the corner, and the sun shone brightly through the window, but there was something strange about the atmosphere. It was far to quiet. Zoe got up gingerly from bed, wincing slightly, she traced her fingers over the scar from her spinal surgery across her body to the scar from her emergancy c-section. Zoe sighed and walked over to check on her baby, who was sleeping soundlessly.
Zoe left her bedroom, and through to the main part of the house. She was expecting to see Charlie sitting at the kitchen table with some toast and a cup of tea before going off to work, but he wasn't there, the front door had been left open, however, so Zoe, frowning, went over to shut the front door, gasping as she saw what was outside. Half the village destroyed, bodies scattered here and there, smoke emitting from some of the houses that had exploded.
She recognised a body of one of the dead. The girl that had helped her escape when she was first captured by the others, a young girl, Zoe vaugley remembered her name....Alex. Zoe ra over to her, her hands shaking, fear over coming her as she was at a loss of what to do. When on earth did this happen, and how did she not hear it go on?
Zoe suddenly heard the crys of her baby back in her house, and she sprinted back to her bedroom, a cry of fright escaped her lips at the surreal scene of Charlie standing by the crib, he was soaking wet, and deathly pale, water dripping off him causing a small pool of water on the floor around him.
"Charlie?" Zoe whispered, the baby crying had ceased, Zoe walked over to him. "What happened?"
"She lies." Charlie told her, water spurting out of his mouth and dribbling down his chin, dripping onto the floor.
"What?" Zoe asked bewildered, cringing at the water. "What are you talking about?"
"Not Penny's boat." Charlie replied, ignoring the question as if it weren't asked. He helf out his hand for Zoe to take, Zoe took it and he pulled her closer to her to look at the baby. "You have to take him off the island.
"Charlie you are soaked. What did you do? Shower in your clothes?" Zoe insisted for answers. "And what are you talking about, taking him off the island. There is nothing but this place."
"Promise, make sure he gets off the island." Charlie stared at her, and Zoe glanced in the crib, realising it wasn't her baby in the crib. It was Aaron.
Zoe woke up startled. Another frightening dream. She instinctively protected her stomach with her hands, and realised quickly she was dressed in scrubs, and in a hospital bed, she was in the Hyrda station, surrounded by familiar people dressed in white coats and scrubs, and she soon recognised them to be Jack, Jo, Chase and Juliet, slight relief swept over her as she realised she had just had another nightmare, but was shocked to find she was in the operating room.
"Wh-what's going on?" Zoe stuttered, worry rushing over her, clueless about being dead for eight full minutes.

Kelso looked up as he heard someone walk into the room. Jack had been called away suddenly to operate on Zoe, who had gone into a critical condition. He hoped she'd be okay - he'd never known her that well really, they'd only spoken the once, but she'd seemed nice.
Kelso smiled to see it was Carrie who had entered. She had that look on her face he'd seen before, when she had to concentrate on getting something done just right. He stood up, as she began fumbling with the lock on the door to Kelso's cell. "Carrie, what are you doing?" He asked.
"I'm getting you out of here," she replied. "Ben's in the gallery watching the surgery, and Juliet's performing it. And I bet if Danny or Tom are watching, they're probably asleep. Even if they're not, they'll just thwack me, and I can take them on easy." Carrie managed to get the door open, and then shut it again as Kelso stepped out the cell. "Come on, follow me. Don't say anything, don't touch anything. Be as quiet as you can."
Taking his hand, Carrie lead Kelso down several winding corridors, and they stopped at the ladder which lead out to the surface of the Hydra. She let go of his hand and climbed up, Kelso following closely, and emerged on the cool, windy surface. Carrie's hair whipped behind her, as Kelso climbed out of the hole. She put the cover back on, and took him down to the sub.
"You're gonna need a sedative for this, but I couldn't pick one up, else someone woulda noticed," she said.
"What's gonna happen then?" Kelso asked. "I heard Zoe saying, back at the Hatch, that she took your gun."
"Remember those karate lessons I took? I'm not one to forget." Carrie quickly karate-chopped Kelso hard on the side of his head, immediately knocking him out. She caught him as he did so, then pulled him into the submarine.
Ten or fifteen minutes later, Kelso began to stur just as the submarine arrived back at the main Island. Carrie carefully helped him, still only half-conscious, onto the surface as he got his head straight.
"Keep going along the shore to the left, you'll arrive back at your camp in about half an hour or so. Alternatively you could trek through the jungle for a quarter of an hour to get to the caves, but it's much easier to find your way over the beach," Carrie instructed him.
"Come with me," Kelso asked her. "I can't stand being away from you."
"Kelso, I can't," Carrie replied, but she took hold of his hand. "I have to get back to Richard, I've been gone a while now, he'll be getting worried."
"He probably knows exactly where you've been, Carrie, I bet Ben told him what happened."
Carrie didn't reply. She knew for certain that the only reason Ben had captured Kelso, was to stir things up between her and Richard. After catching them together in the toilets, Ben was sure to have told Richard about it. So she had two choices now - either stay with Kelso, and go back to his camp with him, and run away from Richard's anger when he next sees her, or alternatively she could go back to the barracks, back to Richard, and abandon her childhood sweetheart.
Still undecided, Carrie looked up at Kelso. She knew how lost he was without her. They'd kept each other in balance when they were younger. They'd both grown up now, but while Carrie had become more independant, Kelso hadn't been able to let go of the support Carrie had given him. Richard had survived on his own for centuries, he was sure to understand that Carrie just had to look after Kelso.
"Okay," Carrie whispered, but Kelso clearly made out what she was saying. They embraced, before setting out along the beach together.
Half an hour later, as they got nearer to the camp, Kelso took the lead and lead her in. Many faces turned to look. Carrie lagged behind Kelso, so that he could be greeted by his fellow survivors without her presence interrupting. After Kelso had been hugged by his friends, Carrie took a deep breath and made her entrance. There was obvious shock on people's faces as they registered the fact that there was an Other right there.
"Who the hell is she?" Carrie heard the voice of a young man from by the campfire.
"It's okay, Neil," Kelso said quickly, before anyone could do anything harsh. "I know her, she's safe."
"Is she one of them?" The same man, Neil, demanded. He looked annoyed and scared at the same time. "Is she one of the Others?"
"Yes, she is," Kelso replied. "But she's safe, trust me. I know her. She's my friend, I knew her way before she came to the Island."
"What is she doing here?" Asked a softer, feminine voice. Carrie looked over to recognise Sun Kwon, accompanied by her husband Jin, who looked frustrated.
"It's okay, she's with me. She promised to come with me. Maybe she could help us get Jack, Kate, Sawyer, Zoe and Jo back."
Carrie bit her lip. She and Kelso both knew it was a false promise, but anything to get them to allow her to stay.
