Day 73
Mars opened her eyes. ‘That bloody dream again’, she thought. Mars sat up and looked in the small mirror on her right. She ran her hand through her hair several times, trying to make herself look a little decent. She then crawled out of her fuselage tent, stood up, and dusted off her old, red T-shirt.
She took a deep breath. The smell of sand, salt and sea entered her nose. It’s a beautiful day - the sun is beating down, she sky is blue, and everyone somehow seemed happier than normal. Mars sighed, grabbed her water bottle and walked out to the jungle to find something to eat.
----------------------------------------------------
… me? hear me? Can you hear me?
Mars opened her eyes. She didn’t know where she was or what happened. The pale white ceiling pushed aside the darkness that threatened to engulf her. She opened her mouth to speak, but all that came out was a groan.
“Miss McTavish,” the voice repeated “You’re in a hospital. You survived a terrible accident. If you can hear me, please say something.”
Mars tried to open her lips again, but they refused to obey. She felt a sharp sting on her arm, and she gasped for breath soon afterwards, her eyes snapped wide open. The pinpoints of light increased. Everything started to take shape. “Good. Try to stay awake now.” the voice said. Mars took a deep breath. “….happened?” she tried her best to talk. “What happened?” a male voice replied. “You survived a 3500 gigawatt electric shock.”
The darkness reappeared. Mars fought to drive it back. “You’re really lucky to be alive. Extremely lucky. That was more than 10.000 volts through your heart!” the man exclaimed. “By the way, my name is Dr. Griggs.” Mars didn’t move or speak. She tried to make sense of what have happened. Then, it struck her. “Kenneth. Where?” She groaned. Dr. Griggs took of his glasses and put it in his pocket. Mars summoned all her energy to sat up on her bed. She looked at Dr. Griggs. Waiting. Dr. Griggs rubbed his eyes with his left hand. “Your friend… didn’t make it. I’m sorry.” Mars collapsed back onto the pillow and shut her eyes. “I’m really sorry.” Dr. Griggs apologized. “That’s fine. It’s not your fault.” Mars smiled. Kenneth you idiot, she thought. “I do have some good news. If your body continues to stabilize, you’ll be going home tomorrow. On top of that, we have scanned your body for possible internal injuries and/or electrical burns and the result is…” Dr. Griggs checked the papers in front of him. “Nil.”
Mars sighed. “I better leave. I have an operation coming up.” Dr. Griggs packed his things and started to walk away. “Take lots of rest, okay?” Mars watched as he opened and closed the door behind him.

Day 73
Jo slept fitfully that night in an armchair by Zoe's bed, alternating shifts with Chase to monitor her vital signs. Zoe seemed to be healing extremely well, one of the medical benefits of the island. Jo reminded herself to relay the good news to Jack when she saw him next.
She was completely blindsided when Zoe told her she had decided to stay on the island.
"You're not mad, are you?" she asked Jo hopefully.
No, she wasn't mad - she was furious. After everything she had done for Zoe, she was choosing to die on the island instead? Jo gritted her teeth and forced herself to remain composed. She didn't realize that Ben was eavesdropping in the doorway. "Listen to me. I understand your reasons, but there is something you don't yet know. Something happens to women who conceive on this island: they don't make it to the third trimester. I kept this from you because I thought you would be leaving the island immediately after your surgery, and you wouldn't be affected."
"What happens to them?" Zoe asked, not really knowing what to expect, but sensing Jo's gravity.
Jo decided the direct approach was best if she had any hope of changing Zoe's mind. "It starts with an almost constant state of nausea. Then you will experience shortness of breath that won't go away. A week after that, you will lose consciousness and slip into a coma. And then, Zoe, you will die. And when your heart stops beating... so will the baby's. Keep in mind, this is all in addition to your pre-existing complications, which are already serious enough."
Zoe's face paled considerably.
"Now," Jo continued. "Think it over, and tell me in a few hours whether you still want to stay on this island."
Ben had silently disappeared, and Juliet now called to Jo from the doorway. "It's time to prep for Ben's surgery," she reminded Jo gently.
Jo stood up and searched Zoe's face carefully for some sign that she understood the dire situation she was in. "Think it over," she repeated, then followed Juliet out the door and back to the operating room.

“Okay, you’re good to go.” Dr. Griggs gave Mars a pat on her back. “By the way, the ambulance called a few hours ago. You can come back to work whenever you like. Just remember that you still need some rest. Don‘t worry about payment - they got it all covered.” “Thanks, doc.” Mars said as she packed her bag. “No worries. Have a good night.” Dr. Griggs smiled and walked away. The electronic doors slid open as Mars walked out of the hospital. She looked at her watch. It’s way too late at night. Mars sighed - cursing the fact that public transport is not available - zipped up her jacket and walked back to her apartment.
The streets were empty and cold and silent. Mars sat on a bench near a park, trying to catch her breath once again. ‘Maybe I’m not fully healed’, she thought. In front of her is a vending machine and next to it, a brightly-painted telephone box. Mars reached to her pocket and pulled out some coins. She stood up and walked to the vending machine.
She put her left hand on the machine as her eyes scanned the products on display.
She felt something running down her veins. She looked around. No one. She then glanced on her left hand, and she saw blue arcs of electricity on her hand, followed by a low, buzzing sound. The lights inside the vending machine began to flicker. She quickly pulled away. Breathing heavily, Mars listened. Nothing. Just the sound of the wind. She looked at her left hand. Everything’s normal.
She took a deep breath, and started to walk away - pretending that nothing happened.
Mars didn’t know that someone is watching her in the distance.
---------------------------------------------------------
Mars sat under an enormous gum tree, enjoying her breakfast of mangoes and bananas. She felt this sudden urge to explore the jungle, but everyone told her that the ‘Others’ might come and get her. She didn’t really know what have happened during her time on the island, but she knew that some of her friends are with the Others, and an Other named Carrie came to join the castaways a few days ago.
A light wind stirred the air. Mars ran her fingers through her hair and pushed some wayward strands away from her dark brown eyes. She quickly finished her food, retrieved her now empty drinking bottle, rose to her feet and started to walk to the waterfall not so far ahead. She needs some time alone to think.
Mars elbowed her way through the bushes, delighted to hear the sound of water rushing down the stream. She took five quick steps and jumped over a large boulder squatted in the middle of her track and into the clearing ahead. Mars jerked away when she saw Carrie and a man sitting on the edge of the stream. They looked at her. Shocked and confused.
“Uh, hello.” Mars stammered. She looked at Carrie. “Hi.” she said curtly. She then looked at the man next to her. Her eyes narrowed as she pointed at him. He’s a tall, muscular, broad-shouldered man with black hair swept back and his purple shirt tucked in neatly, his trousers rolled up to his knees.
Shock and surprise flashed across Mars’ face.
“You.”

Carrie was sitting on her sofa, watching the TV. She was watching the premiere of the new season of Family Guy. Just as the commercial break started, the phone rang. She hit the mute button, and reluctantly went to answer the phone. "Hello?"
"Hi, can I speak to Carolyna Copeland please?" A rather formal, female voice spoke to her. It sounded strangely familiar to Carrie.
"You're speaking to her." Carrie then remembered where she recognised the woman's voice from - it was the secretary from her old university, where she'd graduated from only a few months ago.
"Carolyna, this is Deborah Smith, from Oxford University. A man got in touch with the university a few days ago, asking if we could get him in touch with a psychology gradute. In fact, he asked specifically for you." Carrie frowned. This mysterious man the secretary had mentioned, how had he heard of her? The secretary continued, "he's asked if he could come and meet you."
"Okay, sure. Where and when?"
"Tomorrow at four, he asked, over here at the university. His name is Dr Alpert."

Mars’ eyes narrowed and her jaw grew rigid. She channelled all her power into her right hand - blue arcs and waves of electricity clearly visible on the palm of her hand. She pushed her arm forward - bolts of electricity escaped her hand and struck the brick wall in front of her squarely in the middle, leaving black burn marks.
Mars looked at her watch. 2.15 am. She stretched her arms, turned around and started to walked away. Mars jerked when she saw a man standing in the distance. “Who is it?” she called out. Her voice echoing in the long alleyway. The man stayed in the shadows without moving. Mars channelled all her powers once again to her arms, ready to attack.
The man didn’t speak, but he started to walk towards her. Slowly. Mars pointed her right hand towards him, but her hand shook so badly she wasn’t sure she could even hit him. “Mars McTavish?” The man started to speak. “Can we talk?” “What do you want from me? How do you know my name?” “Please, put your hand down.” The man walked closer. Mars stood in silence as the man quickened his pace and, finally, stopped in front of her. Illuminated by the dim, blue beam of electricity from her hand, Mars looked at him. “Please, don’t tell --” “I won’t.” he interrupted. Mars’ voice trembled “Please. I beg you.” “I want you to trust me, alright? No, I will not tell anyone about this. Now, will you let me explain why I’m here?” he explained slowly. Mars nodded.
“My name is Richard Alpert. I’ve seen you here several times - you know, practising your newfound ability. No one else saw you. I’m sure of that. And I‘m not going to hurt you.”
------------------------------------------------------------------
“You. You’re Richard Alpert.” Mars inched closer. “Mars” Richard gasped. “What a co --” “You! You’re the one that asked me 2 years ago to join your research team!” Mars shot back. “What the heck are you doing here?” “This might sound very ridiculous, but I live here, Mars.” he said. “Wait.” Carrie interrupted. “You two know each other?” “Carrie, please. Let me talk to her.” Richard calmly said. “Mars, I need you to come with me.” “Wait.“ Mars’ eyes narrowed. “Are you an Other?” Richard didn’t answer.
“No. No. No way. No way I’m coming with you.” Mars started to move away. “I’m… going.” “Mars, please.” Richard pleaded, but Mars already made her way back to the jungle.

Day 73
Ben’s surgery began smoothly enough, with Jo, Chase and Juliet following Jack’s directions as they had for Zoe's operation. Jo noticed that Jack seemed extraordinarily tense.
He surprised them all when he made the incision in Ben’s kidney sac.
“Jack, what are…” Jo sputtered.
“Back away from the table!” he shouted at them. Wide-eyed and confused, they listened. Tom looked on from the gallery, clearly stunned. Jack yelled to him that if he didn’t stitch the incision he had just made, Ben would die within an hour. He demanded Tom’s walkie talkie.
“Jack!” Jo screamed in anguish. “Why are you doing this?” Jack ignored her completely. She glanced nervously at Chase and Juliet, and they seemed equally unsure of what exactly was going on. Chase shook his head slightly, indicating that they should play along for now. Jo’s heart pounded. Jack wouldn’t let Ben die, would he? Not now, when she had just discovered Ben was her only family? Could Jack really be so full of rage, so heartless? Jo was sure he didn’t have it in him to willfully let a patient die on the operating table, but he certainly wasn’t acting like himself at the moment.
The next few moments were a blur. Jack spoke to Kate through Tom’s walkie-talkie, and somehow arranged for Kate and Sawyer to be freed.
“Kate, dammit, RUN!” he yelled into the walkie. Jo’s stomach churned violently as she watched. Jack cared enough for Kate to set her free, and Sawyer with him. But what about her? Had his feelings toward Jo changed? If they had, what had changed his mind?
Chaos erupted as the four doctors and Tom began shouting at one another, and ended with Tom kicking Juliet out of the OR. Tom tried to talk Jack into stitching Ben, but was interrupted by a weak “hey” from Ben himself.
Jo crouched down by Ben’s head and saw that his eyes were open. “He’s awake!” she stammered in astonishment. Stunned, Jack crouched beside Jo.
“Could somebody please get Juliet?” Ben asked drowsily. Chase met Jo’s eyes and he slipped out the door to retrieve Juliet.

Day 73
Zoe consumed the information Jo had given her. First, she was slightly hurt no-one had told her anything about this before. Secondly, she was furious at Ben's determination to keep her on this island, even though it could kill her.
Zoe was certain now she had to get off the island, despite her reluctancy, her baby was the most important thing in her life right now, and if that meant she couldn't be on this island, she had to leave. There was no doubt about it.
She had spoken with Ben briefly after Jack had struck his deal with Ben about doing his surgery. Ben had praised how pleased with her he was that she had made the independent decision to stay. She was sure some restrictions would be lifted too now she had accepted herself as one of them.
But now more then ever death was starring her in the face, and all she wanted right now, was the love of her life, Charlie, whom wasn't far away. Only offshore on the main island. But right now, it felt the same as being on the other side of the world.
Zoe had lost one baby already, she wasn't about to loose another.
Zoe struggled out of bed, and instead of standing up and walking out the room, she fell to the floor, her legs still struggling to take a stand on their own, but they were feeling stronger then before. She crawled across the tiled floor and climbed into her wheelchair, and wheeled herself out the medical room and down the corridor. She noticed a sudden quick bustle of whom she recognised as Danny and Jason, Danny witha loaded gun and a furious and determined expression on his face. Zoe frowned. That couldn't be good, and a bad feeling spread throughout her body.
"...Sheppard wasn't even on Jacob's list..." She faintly heard Danny say bitterly.
She followed them, struggling slightly to keep up with them. She came by the monitor room, and remembered the armoury inside. She wheeled herself inside and opened the armoury door, and took a small handgun. The metal was cold against her skin, and her hand trembled. Taking charge of a gun was the last thing she wanted to do, but for some reason, she was certain her friends were in immediate danger. Zoe was about to leave the room when she noticed on the monitor, Danny and Jason, holding guns and fighting with Sawyer and Kate, and they were successful. Kate looked distressed and Sawyer defeated.
"s**t!" Zoe half whispered half shouted, and wheeled herself out the monitor room and out the hyrda to outside where the polar cages were.
By the time Zoe made it outside, Sawyer was on his knees on the ground, outside his cage, Kate was pinned against Sawyer's cage by Jason, crying out, pleading for Danny to stop, but Danny was ignoring her, demmanding for Sawyer to say his last words and counting down, whilst Sawyer merely held his head high.
"DANNY, NO!" Zoe screeched, and then they were all interrupted by Danny's walkie going off.
"You there? Pick it up. Pick it up, Danny. Pick it up, dammit!" Tom's voice crackled. It was raining, and Zoe ignored the cold spreading over her body, her wet hair sticking to her face. They all froze still and Danny answered the walkie.
"I'm here, WHAT?!" Danny yelled.
"Are you anywhere near the cages?" Tom asked. Danny glaned between Sawyer, Kate and Jason, to Zoe and then back at Sawyer, his gun still held ready in place.
"Yeah, you could say that." Danny muttered sarcastically.
"Give your walkie to Kate." Tom ordered.
"Now why the hell would I do that?" Danny replied defiantly.
"Because if you don't, the doctor's gonna let Ben die!" Tom cried drastically. Sawyer, Danny, Kate, Jason and Zoe could hear the noises of the OR bleeding through the walkie talkie clear as day. Zoe gasped as she heard the news. It couldn't be true, it just couldn't. Jack wasn't that kind of man.
"What are you talkin' about? What's that beeping?" Danny demmanded to know, Zoe didn't need the answer, she knew what it meant.
"Just hand her the damn walkie, Danny!" Tom ordered. Danny paused, hesitating, reluctant to do as he was told. "Do it. Just do it now!" Danny sighed, and stands up straight, still holding the gun in his right hand on Sawyer, and hands Kate the walkie, still pineed by Jason against Sawyer's cage.
"Let go of her, Jason." Danny orders, and Jason does as he's told.
"Jack? Jack!" Kate yelled down the walkie. Zoe stared dangerously at Danny. She raised her gun now at him in position, ready if he made the first move. Jack obviously now had Ben in a compromising situation, and Zoe felt it was up to her now to help him save their friends, Danny sure as hell wasn't going to let Sawyer walk without a death attempt, and Zoe picked Sawyer over Danny any day to live. Danny met her stare, and she could see his cold, black deathly eyes stare back at her. Her eyes widened with fear, but her aim remained steady as Kate and Jack continued to talk. Kate's tone became more overwhelming and she was sobbing now.
"YES! Yes, I remember!" She declared, tears spilling down her face, lost amongst the heavy rain downpour.
"When you get safe, you radio me, and you tell that story." Jack told her confidently.
"Jack, please." Kate pleaded.
"If I don't get a call from you in the next hour, I'm going to know something went wrong, and..." Jack explained, his voice suddenly faded slightly, but clear that he was shouting now, his tone serious. "HE DIES!"
"I can't leave without you!" Kate declared.
"Yes, you are. Go!" Jack demanded.
"Jack! I can't!" Kate shouted.
"Go, now!" Jack shouted back.
"I - can't!" Kate shouted, louder this time.
Kate, dammit, RUN!" Jack shouted even louder.
Then everything happened qucikly, in a wet rainy blur. Without warning, Sawyer turned and attacked Danny, Kate the same to Jason, and they fought. Zoe felt useless in her chair, but she managed to wheel herself close to the commotion, and grabbed Danny's gun as Sawyer threw him into the food pallet button, electricuting him, Kate darted out the cage and Sawyer locked them both inside.
"Here! Go!" Zoe instructed them and handed Sawyer Danny's gun, and her own to Kate.
"You're coming too!" Sawyer demmanded, and started lifting Zoe out her wheelchair, but she hit him.
"No, don't! I'll slow you down. Besides, Ben made a deal. He's getting me off this island." Zoe shook her head at him. "Save yourselves. I can deal with those wankers." She indicated to Danny and Jason. "I might even buy you more time. GO!" Kate grabbed Sawyer's wrist and dragged him away, but Sawyer stared at her, not believeing that Zoe was safe staying here, she was one of the them, the survivors, she didn't belong here.
"Tell Charlie I love him!" Zoe shouted after them and they disappeared from sight.
Kate and Sawyer hadn't been gone long when Ivan appeared, running from the direction of the enterance of the Hydra, Danny came too after being dazed from being electricuted, and he and Jason shouted at her to open the cage, but she shook her head, glaring at them angrily. Ivan complied however, wrenching the cage door open, and all three of them, Danny, Jason and Ivan ran into the jungle after Sawyer and Kate.

Day 73
Jo assisted Jack with finishing the operation while Juliet disappeared to find Kate and Sawyer and, upon Ben’s orders, help them escape. They worked side by side in tense silent, watched over by Tom, who struggled not to pass out from the sight of blood. They almost lost Ben when Jack accidentally nicked an artery, but Jack brought him back as he listened to Kate relay the story he had told her on the day of the crash. Jo listened to the story as well and realized that Kate was the only person on Jack’s mind in that moment. The truth hurt so much. Jo continued to assist Jack even as her heart was breaking.
Jack spoke firmly into the walkie to Kate. “Promise me that you’ll never come back for me.”
When the surgery was over, Jo sidled up to Jack in the viewing gallery as he looked down on Ben. “Tell me why you did this,” she demanded.
He still refused to meet her eyes. “I have my reasons,” he replied.
The tears flowed freely now down Jo’s face. “You almost killed my brother. Worse than that, you wanted to kill my brother. It feels like...like betrayal, Jack.”
Jack’s eyes flashed angrily as he finally turned to face her. “You want to talk about betrayal, Jo? How about you and Boone. Would you consider that betrayal?”
Jo felt as if he had slapped her. She took a step backward. “Who told you?”
“Chase told me.” Jack turned away from Jo and deliberately walked past her to meet Juliet in the hallway. Jo took a moment to collect herself, feeling more lost than ever. The new confidence she had felt upon finally discovering who she really was seemed, at least for the moment, shattered. She returned to the operating room. Chase was there, getting ready to wheel Ben down to the recovery room. Jo glared at him fiercely but found herself unable to put her angry thoughts into words.
“I’ll stay with him,” Jo declared, “until we go back to the island.”
Chase noticed her tears, but didn’t say anything. They wheeled Ben to the recovery room together, each lost in their own thoughts.

Carrie and Richard had been at the waterfall together for a few hours now, and Carrie's tears had long since stopped. But she stayed cuddled up to him, her leg getting numb from being under cold water for so long. But she ddin't plan to move quite yet, she was too happy sitting with Richard.
Carrie's eyelids started to drop. She was being lulled to sleep by the overhead heat, the sound of the waterfall and the rhythm of Richard's breathing.
Richard looked down at Carrie and smiled as she began to fall asleep. He gently pushed a strand of hair away from her face, and kissed her forehead. His heart started beating twice as fast, almost bursting with just how much he was in love with her. He gently stroked her hair, intertwining it between his fingers.
Carrie opened her eyes suddenly and sat up, surprising Richard. "What's wrong?" He asked.
"Someone's coming," she said. Richard listened carefully. Sure enough, someone was moving through the jungle at the other side of the pool. They both silently watched as a woman emerged from within the trees, carrying some water bottles. The woman stopped short at the sight of them both. "Uh ... hello."
"Hi," Carrie returned the greeting curtly. She usually wouldn't be so short, but she was annoyed that she'd been interrupted. Richard frowned, seeming to recognize the woman.
"You!" She exclaimed. "You, you're Richard Alpert!"
"Mars!" He said, surprised. "What a co-"
"You, you're the one that asked me two years ago to join your research team!" Mars interrupted. "What the heck are you doing here?"
"This might sound very ridiculous, but I live here, Mars," Richard replied. Carrie looked to and from Richard and Mars, frowning.
"Wait ... you two know each other?"
"Carrie, please. Let me talk to her." Richard put his hand on Carrie's knee, before looking back over at Mars. "Mars, I need you to come with me."
"Wait, are you an Other?" Mars looked worried as she realised. Richard didn't reply. Carrie knew he didn't like his people being called 'the Others'. "No. No, no way! I'm not coming with you." Mars began backing away, stumbling slightly on the rocks as she kept her eyes on Richard. "I'm ... going." She spun around and raced back through the jungle.
"Mars, please!" Richard called after her, but she was already gone.
Carrie looked over at Richard, with one eyebrow raised. "You know her?" She asked.
"Yeah, I tried to recruit her about two years ago. She has some sort of ... special gift. A kind of, electrical connection. It's hard to explain."
"Didn't sleep with her too, did you?" Carrie joked.
Richard smiled slightly. However, he had a glazed look on his face, one that said he didn't like thinking about what he'd done. "No," he said. "No, don't worry, I didn't."
"Good," smiled Carrie. "C'mon, shall we go for a walk?"
"Sure." Richard and Carrie both swung their legs out of the water and put their shoes and socks back on. Carrie stood up first, Richard pulling his trousers back down before he stood up. "Mm, your legs look gorgeous wet," he said. Carrie giggled, as Richard gently stroked her legs.
Carrie bit her lip from habit, and stroked the top of his head, her fingers running through his windswept hair. "Thought we were gonna go for a walk?" She smiled.
Richard looked up at her, with that heartmelting seductive smile on his face. "Do we have to?" He moaned lustfully.
"Yes!" Carrie pulled her trousers back down, before pulling Richard up. She put her hands on his waist and pulled him close. "I'll reward you later," she whispered in his ear.
Richard grinned. "Then let's go!" He look her hand, and led her through the jungle, in the opposite direction to where Mars had gone.
Rain began to fall just as Richard reached the giant foot. He pushed the wall open, and grabbed a stick of fire before entering. He made his way carefully and quietly down the echoing corridor, before arriving in the bright warmth of Jacob's quarters. He carefully placed the flame in a holder to the side of the entrance.
"Hello, Richard," Jacob's voice came from the shadows, before Jacob himself emerged. "I have some very important instructions for you, so listen carefully. Carolyna is currently at the Hydra station. Michael Kelso is her ex-boyfriend, she's gone to visit him. When she gets back, you must argue with her about going to visit him, then she will get upset and go back to Hydra. You musn't try to contact her. You must stay away, until she comes to you. Do you understand, Richard?"
"Yes," said Richard. "But why do you want me to do this?"
"Because," replied Jacob simply. "It's her time to be judged." Richard looked at Jacob in shock. Surely, he wasn't asking him to sit back and let Carrie be judged? "I know it's shocking, Richard," Jacob continued, "but you knew this was going to happen. You went through the same thing, so did Elouise and Charles and Benjamin. Now it's Carolyna's turn."
Richard was silent for a minute, taking in what was going to happen. What he was going to make happen. To Carrie, of all people. "But why Carrie?" He asked. He wasn't challenging Jacob, nor did he doubt him ... he simply wanted to know. "Why do you want Carrie?"
"Richard, you and I both know that Carolyna is special. She can do amazing things, magnificent things that can protect and defend. Benjamin wants to know why I allow you and Carolyna to be together? You work brilliantly together. Your determination to protect this Island has increased over the last 5 years, because you want to protect her." Jacob glanced over at his woven tapestry, then back at Richard. "I promise you, she won't suffer. The one person she needs to explain herself to will appear to her, that's all."
"Okay." Richard reluctantly agreed. He wasn't reluctant to obey Jacob, he was reluctant to bring any harm to Carrie ... but what must be done, must be done, he thought. Jacob retreated back into the shadows, a sign telling Richard to leave. He made his way back up the stone corridor, and emerged back onto the beach, where a storm had now brewed up. He ran back into the jungle, thinking about what he had to do.

Mars strolled the well-worn path back to her camp. Her thoughts revisited secret images of pain more familiar to her than the bends and twists of the trail. She sighed and quickened her pace. A few moments later, she walked out of the bushes and into the sandy beach. She saw Kelso, standing alone in the distance, arms folded in front of him, enjoying the beautiful view while sea water inched up his legs to his waist.
“Kelso!” Mars shouted as she walks towards him. Kelso looked over his shoulder. “Hey, Mars.” he responded simply. Mars stepped into the water, joining him. She took a deep breath. “Where have you been?” Kelso asked, not looking away from the horizon. “The jungle. Had something to eat.” “Oh.” “I also met that Other named Carrie.” Mars added. Kelso gave Mars a puzzled look. “You what?” “I met that Other named Carrie down at the waterfall. She was with that guy named Richard.” Mars looked at Kelso, a frantic look visible on his face. His eyes filled with anger and sadness. “What’s wrong, Kelso?” Mars reached out and grabbed his arm. Kelso recoiled and jerked his arm from her grasp. “Don’t touch me!”
Mars grabbed his arm yet again. “Talk to me! What’s wrong?” Kelso’s eyes flashed with anger. Channelling his rage and misplaced revenge into his hand, he raised it like a battering ram and lunged forward. It hit Mars in the stomach. She grunted and staggered backwards. People started to gather around them. “What are you guys doing?” Rose folded her arms in front of her and looked sharply at Kelso. Kelso looked around and walked away, pushing other people away from him. Rose shook her head and walked toward Mars. “You okay, kid?” Mars nodded. “Thanks, Rose. I’m fine.” Mars put her hands on her stomach and started to walk away quickly. She smiled with satisfaction as arcs of electricity began to travel from her fingers to her sore stomach - speeding her recovery process - not realizing that Hurley watched in silence.
--------------------------------------------------------------
“Get me my beer!”
Seven-year-old Mars walked towards her father, carrying three bottles of beer from the fridge. Her dad is a tall, sandy-haired muscular man. The smoke from his cigarette floated above his head. He stood near a deep, narrow stream in front of their house. Mars carefully positioned the bottles of beer beside him, and quickly walked away.
“Where do you think you’re going?” Stephen McTavish’s low voice stopped Mars in her tracks. His back still turned toward her. Mars walked slowly forward, her feet trembling. When she was within arm’s reach, he grabbed her and held her out over the edge of the stream. Mars looked down and closed her eyes. “Be careful.” he said with mock concern. “You don’t want to drown. It would be an awful mess for someone to clean up.”

"Do it again."
"I can't."
"Just try, please."
"I told you Richard, I can't!"
Richard looked at Carrie. "Okay," he said. "Recover for a moment, then try again." He stood up and went into the kitchen to get a bowl of water.
Carrie looked at her hands, which were red raw. "It hurts," she said. Richard returned with the bowl, and placed it on the table in front of Carrie.
"Here, this should help," he said. Carrie dipped her hands in the water, which stung against her palms. She winced in pain. "When did you find out?" Richard asked.
"When I was about seven," Carrie explained. "Mum nearly hit me once. I put my hands out to stop her, and ... this purple ball of energy sort of shot out of my hands and it pushed her back."
"Can you do anything else?" Richard asked curiously. Carrie looked up at him.
"Why do you want to know?" She asked. When Richard didn't reply, she said, "I can move things. I can move glasses across tables, things like that." She paused. "And I can go invisible."
Richard frowned. "You can go invisible?" Carrie didn't reply, merely nodded. "Can you show me?"
Carrie sighed, taking her healed hands out of the bowl. Richard's eyes widened in shock as Carrie disappeared, then reappeared several moments later. "I don't like doing it, though," she said. "I don't like doing any of it. I mean, I'm probably the only person who can do these things, it scares me. When I do it, I feel sort of ..."
"Special?" Richard suggested.
"Different," Carrie said. "But I don't want to be different, Richard. I don't want to stand out from the crowd. I want ..." Carrie sighed. "I just wanna be me."
"Carrie ..." Richard leant forward and put his hand on her leg, and looked straight into her eyes. "You are you. 'You' is special. Nothing's ever gonna change how special you are." There was a pause, before Richard said, "come on, show me this movement thing you do."
Carrie reached her arm out and, without touching it, moved the bowl away. Richard watched, amazed, as she did this. "That's ... spectacular."
After a long walk around merely a fraction of the large Island, Carrie and Richard made their way back to the Barracks, hand in hand. They passed the waterfall again, and stopped short to see Kelso walk into the clearing. He stopped short too, at the sight of them both.
"You must be Richard," Kelso looked at Richard with what Carrie could only describe as hate. He walked towards them, angry. "Wait, I recognise you ..." He said. "You're the one that recruited her!" He looked at Carrie. "You're sleeping with your boss?"
"Kelso," Carrie began, "he's not-"
"I can't believe you!" Kelso said angrily. "You came back with me, you said you loved me! Now I see you holding hands with him?"
"Kelso, don't do this, please. I've explained to you, to both of you ... I love you, Kels, you're my childhood sweetheart. But that's the thing - I'm not a little kid anymore! I love Richard in a different way, he's the one I wanna be with. For five years I've been here, five years we've lived without each other. I've moved on, and so should you. You need to find someone else, Kelso, someone who'll give you the love you deserve. And no matter how much you believe otherwise ... that someone isn't me."
Kelso didn't reply. He looked over at Richard and said, "you know she shagged me the other day?"
"What?!" Richard looked at Carrie incredulously. "Why didn't you tell me?"
"I thought you knew," she said truthfully. "I thought Ben told you." Richard didn't reply, he was too hurt. "I'm sorry," Carrie said. "I really am. I love you."
Richard reached up and stroked the side of Carrie's face. "It's okay," he said. "I guess we're even now. It'd be shallow of me if I held it against you."
Taking both of them by surprise, Kelso's fist connected with the side of Richard's face, forcing him to the ground.
"Kelso! Don't!" Carrie tried to stop him, but it was no use. Kelso hit Richard again and again. Richard didn't hit him back, but recoiled in pain. Carrie tried to pull Kelso away, but he threw her off him. Tears began running down her cheeks as blood poured from Richard's temple and his nose. "Kelso, please! Stop it! Leave him alone!" Carrie tried to get Kelso to stop, but he just kept hitting Richard. More blood gushed out of his wounds, and Carrie saw Richard's skin go pale. Instictively, she mustered up all of the energy she could and threw a forcefield at Kelso. It was small, but it pushed him off before disappearing.
Ignoring what had just happened, as strange as it was to him, Kelso pulled a gun out of his pocket and pointed it at Richard, who was too weak to sit up. "NO!" Carrie screamed. "KELSO, DON'T!" Ignoring Carrie's screams of protest, Kelso fired the gun. Without even moving, a huge spherical forcefield emerged from Carrie's hands and surrounded Richard's whole body and stayed there. The bullet richoted off the purple energy, and bounced back towards Kelso.
"KELSO!!" Carrie screamed louder than before, running over to him and catching him as he fell. He looked up at her as she cradled him in her arms, and pushed his hair out his face. "Michael, don't you dare leave me!"
Kelso's eyes were fading. Tears rushed down Carrie's face as she realised her childhood sweetheart was dying. He looked at her, mustering up the last of his energy to mutter, "he's home." With those last words, Kelso's eyes blanked and he stopped breathing.
"KELSO!!" Carrie screamed, sobbing as she cradled his dead body in her arms. "I love you," she sobbed into his ear. "I love you. I love you ..."
She kept muttering the same three words over and over under her breath, until she felt Richard's hand on her shoulder. He bent down next to her. "He's gone," she sobbed. "Kelso's dead ..."
"I know," Richard said sadly, putting his arm across her shoulders. "I know."
They both sat in silence, the only noises audible the rush of the waterfall and Carrie's sobs. She clutched onto her dead friend, as if she'd die too if she let go. Richard's comforting arm around her shoulder, Carrie sat there, wishing, hoping, that Kelso had known just how much he had really meant to her.

Day 73
Zoe was getting ready to head back to the main island, to go home where she could recover properly before being sent back to L.A along with Jack and Juliet. She was interrupted by Tom.
"Isabel wants to see you before we go." He told her. "She has some questions to ask you." Zoe gave Tom a puzzled look.
"Who's Isabel?" She asked, not recalling anyone by that name.
"She's kinda our sheriff." Tom explained loosely.
"Sheriff?" Zoe raised an eyebrow. "This island has law?" She scoffed at the irony.
"No, not exactly." Tom answered her, and took her by the wheelchair and started wheeling her towards Isabel's office. "But we do take the deaths of our people very seriously."
"But I haven't killed anyone." Zoe frowned.
"Oh, we know. But you maybe involuntarily connected." Tom replied. He opened Isabel's office door and wheeled Zoe inside. The room had a far from kind atmosphere. Isabel, a middle aged, fierce looking woman was sat behind a desk, and Jack sat in a chair glaring at her, but he turned when the door was opened and Tom wheeled her in. Zoe smiled at Jack in a greeting way. Zoe wheeled herself up next to Jack and faced Isabel with curiosity.
"So, you're Isabel?" Zoe asked.
"Hello Zoe, how are you doing? I trust Chase is treating you well?" Isabel asked, almost as if talking to a child. Zoe glared at her, her nostrils flaring slightly. She folded her arms haughitly.
"I'm doing fine. I'd rather Juliet's company though." Zoe replied pointedly as Tom handcuffed Jack and led him away from the office and back to Kate's old cage.
"Well Juliet can't right now. She's in trouble." Isabel replied.
"What kind of trouble?" Zoe asked curiously, but she knew the answer.
"Serious trouble." Isabel replied as if she was talking about a naughty child. "She killed Danny." Zoe nodded.
"I know." Zoe replied, a pleased look on her face.
"We don't take killing of people lightly, Zoe." Isabel reminded her.
"Yeah, I heard. Yet, you don't mind hanging Charlie..." Zoe began bitterly, "Snapping the necks when people don't do what you want....or shooting defenceless innocent people like Sawyer..."
"I admit now, Ethan's actions were rash and irresponsible, and so were Danny's. They weren't our responsibility." Isabel excused.
"Right, well maybe Juliet's were rash too. She had to think quick, in order to fullfil what Ben asked of her." Zoe pointed out.
"Did Juliet ever imply she wanted Benjamin dead? Or reveal plans that she was going to ask Jack to kill Benjamin during surgery?" Isabel asked.
"No." Zoe replied flatly.
"You sure?" Isabel checked.
"You hurt Juliet, then I will be forced to break island law too." Zoe snapped bitterly, before her lip curled in one corner, and she shook her head, and turned her wheelchair around and headed out the door without another word. She didn't know why she became so defensive over Juliet. Sure, she had been an amazing doctor to her, and they had become sort of friends. She hated people dying, and her threat was pretty empty, she knew that, and Isabel knew that too, and she knew Isabel knew how empty her threat was. Zoe made her way back to her recovery room to pack the last few things she needed before she would take the sub back to the main island.

Mars sat outside her tent and looked at her watch. It’s getting dark, and still, no sign of Kelso. Mars filled a clear plastic up with water and set them on a flat rock beside her. She couldn’t help but wonder where Kelso is. She didn’t really know who he is, but he was so.. disoriented and mad and upset, Mars afraid he would hurt himself. Mars thought for a few moment before turning up his cup of water and draining it. She shook her head, stood to her feet and began to walk back to the jungle. ‘Why am I doing this’, she wondered.
Mars strolled down the path on the Jungle. She have walked for what seems like hours. Mars crouched in the shadows, catching her breath. She looked up to the sky and watched in terror as the darkness grew. After several minutes of thinking, she decided to go back to her camp. She gave up. Wherever Kelso is right now, she have decided not to care about it. It’s his own fault. She offered to help but he clammed up and act weird about it.
Mars walked in frustration to the waterfall. Only the sound of water cascading over the cliff can clear her mind. She stopped in her tracks and crouched when she saw people in the distance. She narrowed her eyes. ‘That Other and Richard.’, she thought. ‘Why on Earth are they still there?’ Richard turned sideways and Mars could see blood pouring down his face. She couldn’t help but let out a soft gasp. Driven by curiosity, Mars walked slowly to a nearby tree for a closer look. Surprise flashed across her face when she saw Kelso’s stiff body, his back on the wet, stony ground.
“Lord, help me.” she whispered.

Day 74
Jo wept quietly in a corner of Ben's recovery room while he slept, both of them oblivious to the drama surrounding the shooting of Danny.
Chase entered the room and slowly sank to a sitting position on the floor opposite Jo, handing her a box of Dharma tissues with gentlemanly flair. She glared fiercely at him and refused to take his gift. She wiped her eyes with the back of her hands instead, and looked Chase squarely in the eye.
"How did you know about Boone?"
Chase reddened in embarrassment. He knew this conversation was a long time in coming, but he still wasn't quite ready to face up to it.
"Our psychologist, Carrie, watched you and the other survivors in the days after the crash. She gathered quite a bit of intelligence on everybody - and happened to witness your little indiscretion."
Jo rubbed her forehead head in agitation, a habit she had adopted from Jack. "It wasn't your place to tell Jack. Why did you do it?"
Chase reddened even more. He barely spoke above a whisper. "Isn't it obvious to you? I was jealous."
Jo should have felt smug, or flattered, or anything else, but her only emotion was devastation. Chase had wanted to separate Jo and Jack, perhaps permanently - and it looked like he had succeeded.
She slapped him hard across the face, leaving an angry red mark on his already blushed cheek. "You're a bastard, and I hate you," she hissed, then stood up and stormed out of the room. She needed to explain the truth to Jack, and hope for forgiveness - if it wasn't already too late.

Rene was still walking around in a daze two days after her last vision. She spent all the time she could with the children. She had a full understanding now that Juliet was no longer going to be able to help out in their transition.
She desperately wanted to speak with Ben but was unsure of any privacy that she would have given the circumstances. She was still reeling over what Jack did him. She hadn't felt an emotion of hatred this strong in a very long time.
Rene was with Cindy, Zack and Emma when they were out walking and observing their surroundings when they came across Jack in what was Sawyer's old cell.
"Cindy? What are you doing here?" "We're here to watch Jack" Jack was very displeased. Cindy and the children began walking away. Rene stopped and stared at Jack for long time. She was seething. "WHAT!?" he shouted at her. "You call yourself a doctor? You swear to do no harm? Who do you think you are, JACK?" Jack looked at her blankly. "He is a great man, you will never understand that. I know why he brought you here," "A great man? a man who kidnaps children, kills people." Jack was frustrated. "You have no idea what you've stumbled upon Jack. You have no idea." Rene was very matter of fact, shaking her head. "How dare he!?"she grumbled in her head and stomped off to catch up with Cindy.
