Sometime b4 bens op!
"Are we friends? or......." sophie hesitated, then spoke blushing a little "we are lovers?"
Ben smiled as he crouched down beside her and took her hand. "We're together...... yes." Sophie sighed in frustration wanting to remember so hard.
"I wish i could remember something.... I'm sorry"
"Hey..." Ben squeezed her hand to reassure her. "It's ok it's not your fault. I'll help you get through this" as he spoke Juliet knocked on the door to his office and came in.
"Ben, we're ready when you are." she spoke. As Ben nodded he turned to Sophie. "I'm gonna be gone for a few days. But once i'm back, i promise to help you remember ok?" he smiled and brushed her cheek, Sophie nodded in agreement, even though she didn't knew this man too well, she felt that she did. She felt comfortable with him.
Ben got up and left room and headed down the corridor with Juliet.
"Why didn't you tell her?" she questioned.
"I didn't want her too worry over this."

Day 74 “Cindy, can you go over the studies with Zack and Emma, I need to go see Ben.” René was intent on seeing Ben no matter what Cindy’s answer was. Besides, Cindy had adapted well in her acclimation to the group and was very nurturing with the children.
“Oh sure, not a problem René; I’ll see you at dinner later.” Cindy shook her head in agreement. “Come along children, time to read more about Jacob” was the last thing René heard as she walked away from them back towards the Hydra.
When she got to Ben’s post op room she heard Jo and Chase in the room. She couldn’t make out the conversation but assumed Ben must be awake if they were talking.
René walked through the door and saw a very stunned look on Chases face. Jo looked terribly upset and her eyes were red from crying.
René stuttered, obviously she has interrupted something “I...I...I’m sorry, I can come back another time.”
“No, I was just going to step out anyway” Jo said as she glared at Chase on last time before leaving the room.
“Uh, yeah, um, go ahead. You can sit with him for a bit.” Chase was still trying to shake off whatever it was that happened between him and Jo. “I’m sure he’ll be awake soon.”
“Thanks” René said softly. She went over and sat down next to Ben on the floor. Without knowing why her eyes swelled over with tears.
“I’m so sorry Ben” she said unsure if he was awake and knew she was there. This was a situation she was very fearful of given her history. She whispered “Ben, are you awake?”
“René?” he rasped, his throat dry from surgery. “Can you get me some water please?” She grabbed a glass off the counter with the straw and let him take a sip.
He cleared his throat. “What can I do for you?”
“I turned in my report; it’s on the desk of your office,”
He cut her off, “come on now, you didn’t come down here to tell me that.”
She took a deep breath “I just don’t know where to begin, and with the way things have been going on here since the crash, it’s just so hard. Oh, I’m rambling. I just really wanted to make sure you were okay.”
“René, you are one of the most loyal coming here since Tom, please, it’s ok to tell me.” Ben sounded exhausted, but really wanted René to open up to him. The more information he knew the better.
“I started having dreams. They scare me Ben, I’m not sure what they mean. The other day, before your surgery, I SAW my husband.”
Ben blinked and his forehead wrinkled, his gears turning “When did this start?”
“Three months ago. You told me Jacob had a purpose for me here, I didn’t know who else to trust.” She rushed out her sentence praying he had an answer.
“Patience René, patience…….” He drifted off back to sleep. The painkillers he had were still taking effect on him. She wiped her tears from her face stood up and walked out, questioning her decision for the first time since coming, but determined to see through her loyalty to Ben, Jacob and the island.

A five-year-old Carolyna Copeland smiled happily as she heard the strums of her father's guitar floating from the front room. She lightly ran downstairs and pressed her ear to the door, listening.
"Now I know there's no comfort in this world God I miss that hometown girl Wanna hold her I'm on the road now, I know just what I need To find my way back to Tennessee I'm coming home now to southern air so sweet And find my way back to Tennessee"
Carrie heard her mother's car pull up the driveway. She quickly ran upstairs out of the way, humming the tune she had just heard, having absolutely no idea what her father was telling her.
Carrie carefully placed Kelso's cold body on the ground. She'd been grieving for a while now, and still Richard hadn't moved. He hadn't even said anything, just sat there and comforted her.
"I wanna bury him," she whispered. "I wanna bury him somewhere quiet, and private. And I need to do it alone."
"Okay," Richard replied, just as quietly as Carrie had spoken.
Gently, Carrie brushed the side of Kelso's face. "He loved me," she said. "He loved me, and this is what I did to him." Richard went to speak, but Carrie stopped him. "Don't deny it, Richard," she said. "If I'd only made my godforsaken mind up, if I'd been straight with him ... maybe he wouldn't have gone so mental."
As they sat there in silence, Carrie heard a rustle from within the trees. The faint sound of a woman's whispering voice floated through the breeze. Carrie looked up, and saw Mars standing on the other side of the pool. Neither woman said anything, they just watched each other curiously.
"What happened?" Mars said after a moment or two, stepping towards them both. Richard looked up - he hadn't realised Mars was standing there. He looked surprised to see her there.
"Kelso ... the bullet, it bounced ..." Carrie stumbled over an attempt to explain, but she couldn't. She just couldn't recount the events of Kelso's death.
Richard kissed her gently on the top of her head comfortingly and went over to Mars. But before he could speak to her, he collapsed onto the rocks. In another instinct of protection, Carrie threw another forcefield around him, suspending him mid-fall. She ran over to him and released the forcefield, catching him as the suspension stopped. She lay him down carefully and put her hand to his forehead.
"He's lost too much blood," she said, unaware that Mars herself was a paramedic. "We need a doctor, but they're all at Hydra!"

Chase waited outside until Rene left, then returned to Ben's bedside to examine his stitches. He drew in his breath sharply as he noticed the beginning of an infection around the sutures. He grabbed his walkie-talkie and tried to message Juliet, but she must have had it turned off because there was no signal. He had no choice; he had to contact Jo.
Jo was halfway to Jack's cell when her walkie came to life. She heard Chase's voice. "Jo, it's Chase. Ben's incision is infected. I need you and Jack in the OR immediately, if we can get him. I can't reach Juliet."
Jo sighed deeply. Dammit, Chase, she thought to herself. It was going to be impossible to avoid him in this place, and she wasn't about to let Ben suffer on account of their squabble. They would have to continue to live and work together. "I don't know where Juliet is, but I'll be there."
Jo pocketed her walkie-talkie and continued walking towards Jack's aquarium. She was alarmed to find it completely abandoned.
**********
Back in the operating room, Jo and Chase were tending to Ben when Jack and Alex stormed in. Ben raised his head weakly.
"The cavalry has arrived, at last." Ben's never too sick for sarcasm, Jo thought to herself with amusement. She and Chase stepped away from the operating table while Jack and Ben traded insults. Finally, she had to interrupt. Ben needed immediate medical attention, and Jack was wasting precious time.
"Jack, why are you really here?" she asked him tersely.
"Because right now, your people are in a room deciding whether or not to execute Juliet. And Ben is going to stop it."
Jo suddenly felt dizzy and steadied herself by leaning on the operating table. Why had she been kept in the dark about Juliet's situation, and Danny's death? She turned to Chase but he seemed equally distressed by the news.
Jack continued to negotiate and got Ben to commute Juliet's sentence, in exchange for Jack's continued medical attention. As Ben wrote down his orders, Jo mouthed a silent "Thank you" to Jack. He left with Alex and didn't bother to acknowledge Jo's gratitude.

Day 74
Zoe teamed up in a boat on the way back to the main island, heading back to the Barracks. She overheard Tom talking to Jason.
"How long will you be gone?" Jason asked.
"Just a few days, that should be enough to convince Michael to do as we asked." Tom replied.
"Michael?" Zoe interrupted. "Michael as in Walt and Michael?" Zoe asked. Tom nodded, and fury exploded in Zoe's head at his betrayal, and how it had cost Libby and Ana Lucia's lives. She didn't make another remark on the matter however, she didn't trust what she would end up blurting and ranting about.
When they arrived back to the barracks, Zoe headed straight for her house, shortly was visited by Juliet.
"Jules!" Zoe smiled and went over and gave her a quick unexpected hug. "Thank you for everything. I'm sorry what you had to be put through."
"That's ok." Juliet replied, smiling. "I bet you'll be pleased to be leaving soon, offisland, with me and Jack?" Zoe nodded, but didn't speak. She wanted to stay, she didn't want to leave, knowing she'd be so far away from Charlie, and her friends.
"When do we leave?" Zoe inquired.
"Jack reckons it'll take about a week for Ben to recover enough from surgery that he isn't needed." Juliet explained. "Then we can leave." Zoe nodded.
"I think I am going to get some rest now. Thanks Juliet." Zoe smiled weakly, and she wheeled herself to her bedroom while Juliet said her goodnight and left her to it.

Day 74
They gathered at sunset to leave for the main island. Before they set off in the small boats, Ben summoned Jo over to him. He looked so small and frail in his pajamas that something akin to affection fluttered through her, a strange feeling given her longstanding animosity towards Ben. He beckoned for her to come closer.
"I want you to keep Sophie away until I'm stronger. Don't let her see me like this. Promise me."
"Okay, Ben." Jo agreed, wondering what was going through his mind, but she knew it wasn't the right time to ask questions. "I promise."
As the Others prepared the boats for launch, Jo spotted Jack standing alone on the beach and pulled him aside.
"Where's Zoe?" she asked, concerned. She hadn't seen Zoe since before Ben's operation.
"She took an earlier boat, with Tom and Juliet. She'll be waiting on the other side," Jack responded.
Jo seized her opportunity. "Jack, I know you're angry..." she began.
"Not now," he interrupted sharply.
"NO." her temper flared against his infernal stubborness. "We only have right now, because when we reach the main island they are going to separate us. And very soon you and Zoe and Juliet will leave the island for good, and I'll be left behind." Bitterness crept into her voice, but she remained steady. "I know now that Ben will never let me go with you, and I've made my peace with that. But I need to explain something to you, before this happens, and you need to listen."
Jack focused on Jo, and listened patiently.
"I was your patient, and you yourself confirmed that I had retrograde amnesia. I had no memory of being in love with you. Boone and I were thrown together in a strange situation, and we grew close. What happened with him only happened because, in my fractured mind, I thought I was free to give my heart to anyone I chose. So I chose Boone..." Jo's lip quivered and tears stung her eyes. "And I made a mistake. But Jack...my feelings came back to me. There's never been anybody else, not really. I swear to you."
Jo was sobbing now. Jack pulled her close to him and held her tightly. He had missed her, he now realized. Although he and Kate had grown close, there was really only one person for him, and always would be.
"You have to forgive me, Jack!" Jo pleaded in a hoarse whisper.
"I forgive you Jo," he whispered back, pushing her hair out of her face and kissing her tears. "And I will take you with me."

The previous day
Mars walked out of the jungle and stood on the other side of the waterfall. She then looked at Kelso’s body on the ground, a bullet wound is clearly visible on the right hand side of his stomach and a gun can be seen next to him. Mars didn’t say anything at first, she just looked at Carrie. Confused.
After a moment or two Mars broke the deafening silence. “What happened?” she walked closer, arms in front of her for protection. She’s an Other, after all. Richard looked up and saw Mars walking towards him. Their gaze met. Richard’s eyes widened in surprise. "Kelso ... the bullet, it bounced ..." Carrie tried to piece everything together.
Richard then kissed the top of Carrie’s head, and walked straight to Mars. Before he could even speak, he fell onto the rocks. To Mars’ surprise, a force field was visible around him afterwards, supporting his fall. Mars quickly glanced at Carrie. She ran over him and released the force field and lay him down carefully. ‘No way.’ she thought. ‘No way.’ “He’s lost too much blood.” Carrie explained. “We need a doctor, but they’re all at Hydra!”
“I can help. I’m a… junior paramedic back in London.” Mars explained. “But since I don’t have a first aid kit with me, I guess I have to do it the other way.” Mars shrugged. “Wait. What?” Carrie asked. “See, Carrie, I’m actually quite surprised right now, knowing that there is someone out there who has some sort of a special ability. It feels good knowing that I’m not alone.” Mars said. She felt weird because she’s explaining her condition to an Other she didn’t really know or trust. Carrie looked at Mars. Mesmerized. “So, you…” “Yes.” Mars interrupted. “Now, move away from him for awhile. This might take awhile.” Mars knelt beside Richard as Carrie moved away.
Mars put her hands on Richard’s chest and blue waves of electricity began to travel from her hands to Richard’s chest. Mars grunted. Almost immediately the bleeding stopped - but Richard was still unconscious. “It’s been awhile since I last did this, so bare with me.” Mars let out a soft laugh. ‘Why am I doing this?’ she thought. Mars jerked when she saw Richard’s eyes fluttering as he began to regain consciousness. Richard looked to and from Mars and her hands on his chest. He groaned. “Just a little more… there.” Mars pulled her hands away from Richard’s chest. Breathing heavily, she crawled to Kelso’s body nearby. She put her fingers on his neck, trying to find a slow yet definite pulse.
“He’s gone, don’t even bother.” Carrie said. “Explain to me what happened.” Mars closed her eyes as she tried to feel his pulse on her fingers. “It’s really heard to explain..” “He was really upset when I told him that you and Richard are here, you know?” Carrie stood in silence. “Lord, please.” Mars continued to explore his neck and chest and wrists in search for a sign of life. A milky haze is now visible on Kelso’s eyes. After a few minutes of silence, Mars let out a soft laugh and looked over her shoulder to Carrie and Richard.
“I… I got his pulse!” she smiled. ---------------------------------------------------------
Day 74
Mars rolled over in her simple bed inside her tent and opened her eyes. Her hair had fallen over her face, and when she looked sleepily toward the tent entrance, she mistook the man standing there for a few strands of brown hair. She brushed the hair from her face. The figure remained.
Mars squinted and rubbed her eyes with her hands. She reached over and turned a flashlight on. The dim beam barely reached across the tent to the entrance, but there was no mistaking the identity of her visitor. Kelso.

Carrie bit her lip, wondering what to do for Richard.
"I can help," said Mars. Carrie looked up at her. "I'm a junior paramedic back in London ... but since I don't have a first aid kit with me, I guess I'll have to do it the other way," she shrugged.
Carrie frowned. "Wait, what?"
“See, Carrie, I’m actually quite surprised right now, knowing that there is someone out there who has some sort of a special ability. It feels good knowing that I’m not alone," explained Mars.
Carrie stared at Mars, shocked. Richard had told her she was the only one who could do what she could. Sure, he'd said earlier that Mars had an electrical connection, but she'd never imagined it'd mean she could do what Carrie could. "So, you ..."
"Yes," interruped Mars. "Now, move away from him for a while. This is gonna take a while." As Mars knelt down besides Richard, Carrie took a few steps back, not once taking her eyes off Richard.
Carrie felt a pang of protective jealousy as Mars put her hands on Richard's chest, and looked on in shock as blue waves of electricity fluxuated between Mars' hands and Richard's chest. The bleeding stopped, but Richard's eyes remained closed.
"It's been a while since I last did this, so bare with me," Mars explained. Carrie bit her lip nervously. Could she trust Mars with healing Richard? Surely she could ... there was no reason why Mars would want to hurt him.
Carrie smiled as Richard's eyes opened slightly. He looked at Mars, then at her hands on his chest, and groaned.
"Just a little more ... there." Mars pulled her hands away from Richard's chest, and crawled over to Kelso's body, but Carrie didn't notice. She rushed over to Richard and helped him sit up. He put his hand to his head, blinking a few times as he got his head straight.
"You okay?" Carrie whispered, examining his face with concern.
"Yeah," he replied, standing up. Carrie stood up with him, and they embraced. Carrie realised she hadn't kissed him since she'd first left for Hydra, a week ago.
She looked over at Mars, who was searching Kelso's body for a pulse. "He's gone," she said sadly. "Don't bother."
"Explain to me what happened," Mars demanded, closing her eyes as she tried to find a non-existant pulse on Kelso.
"It's kinda hard to explain ..." Carrie said.
"He was really upset when I told him that you and Richard are here, you know?"
Carrie didn't reply. No wonder Kelso had appeared at the waterfall ... he was looking for her. He wanted it to happen - he'd come to the waterfall with full intention to kill Richard. Even though she knew Richard's secret, Carrie couldn't help but hate Kelso for wanting to kill him.
"I've got his pulse!" Mars exclaimed suddenly, breaking Carrie's train of thought.
"What??" Carrie ran over to where Mars was clutching Kelso's wrist. "No, that's impossible. He's dead, I know he is." Carrie tried to feel his pulse herself, to see if Mars was telling the truth, but she didn't move her fingers.
"I can bring him back," she said. "I can bring Kelso back."
"No." Richard appeared at their side. "No, you're not bringing anyone back. It's not right." Carrie looked at Richard, upset. He immediately knew what she was thinking. He knelt down and said, "Carrie, trust me, this has got nothing to do with the fact he's your ex, or that he tried to kill me. I wouldn't let Mars bring anyone back if they died."
"Not even me?"
Richard didn't reply. Instead he looked at Mars and said, "don't bring him back." Richard took Kelso's arm, and pulled it out of Mars' grip, breaking the connection they had. A tear ran down Carrie's cheek, and Richard slipped his hand into hers. "I'm sorry," he said.
"I know," Carrie replied. "I know."
"I love you," Carrie whispered, before wiping a final tear from her eyes and slowly walking back home.
She'd spent the last few hours digging Kelso's grave, and had spent a further half an hour sitting there, her thoughts consumed with memories of Kelso. They taught each other how to ride a bike ... they copied off each other in tests ... they defended each other in times of weakness. But the one memory most prominent to Carrie was Kelso taking the blame when she got blamed for setting the fire alarm off. He got in so much trouble, and he did it just to save her butt from her mother. Even at that young age of eight, Kelso had loved Carrie. But she'd never really told him that she loved him too.
Carrie arrived back in her house, where Richard was already waiting for her. "Did it go okay?" He asked, standing up from the sofa and walking over to her as soon as she got in.
"Yeah," replied Carrie. "Yeah, it did." Richard pulled her into a hug, and she put her arms around his waist, both of them squeezing each other tight, neither wanting to let the other go. "I love you," Carrie said.
"I love you too," Richard replied. Carrie looked up at him.
"I know," she said. For the first time in over a week, she reached up and kissed him. He kissed her too, passionately, also knowing it had been too long since the last time they'd kissed. It was late, almost one in the morning. "We should go to bed," Carrie said, breaking apart after several minutes. "It's getting late."
"Okay." Richard and Carrie made their way to their bed, Richard smiling to himself as he knew exactly what Carrie meant by saying they should go to bed, straight after they'd kissed.

“What?” Carrie exclaimed. “No, that’s impossible, he’s dead. I know he is.”
Mars pressed her fingers even harder on Kelso’s stiff neck to make sure that she’s right. She could feel his pulse, extremely weak but steady. “I can bring him back.” Mars moved into position. “I can bring Kelso back.”
Before Mars could give Kelso a shock, Richard appeared at their side. “No. You’re not bringing anyone back. It’s not right.” Mars was dumbfounded. ‘But he’s still alive and with a little zap he’ll be breathing and walking and well!’, she thought. Mars tried to say something but she couldn’t. “Don’t bring him back.” Richard took Kelso’s arm and pulled him away from Mars’ grip. Mars watched in silence as both Carrie and Richard walked away with Kelso’s body.
Mars put her hand on her face, thinking. What on earth was on Richard’s mind? She was sure she could feel Kelso’s pulse on her fingers, but why did he say ‘No’? Mars felt hot tears started to dwell in the corner of her eyes. She felt guilty for letting Richard take Kelso away from her. Mars took a sharp breath, closed her eyes and prayed before she walked back to the camp.
------------------------------------------------
Her voice trembled. “Kelso?” ‘How?’ she thought. The figure continued to stare at her impassively. “You… have something to say, right? You still have something to do, right? I -- I can help.” Mars asked peevishly. Mars trembled with fear when Kelso started to inch closer towards her until he stopped right beside her and sat down in silence. He looked around her tent, his eyes flashing in the dark. Mars closed her eyes and counted from one to five, hoping that all of this is just a dream. She opened her eyes and jerked when she saw Kelso still in front of her, watching her. Mars watched as he opened his mouth to speak.
“I’m sorry I got mad at you.”
Mars blinked. “That -- That’s OK. Look, I’m… really sorry. I could have revived you, but I --” “That’s fine.” Kelso interrupted. “Really, that’s fine.” “But now you’re dead!” Mars shot back. She felt really guilty now. Kelso nodded. “Maybe it’s my destiny. Please, don‘t think about it anymore.” Mars sighed. “So… are you going to pay Carrie a visit as well?” Kelso smiled and shook his head. “No.” “Why?” “Because she’s with Richard now. She’s happy. And if she’s happy,” Kelso paused. “I’m happy.” Mars looked at Kelso. “I see.” “Besides, I don’t want to ruin their time together.” Kelso chuckled. “She’ll be sad again.” Mars took a deep breath. “You know, you’re a lot more calm when you’re dead.” Kelso couldn’t help but let out a soft laugh. He then nodded, stood up and started to walk away. He then stopped in the middle of his tracks and turned around, facing Mars.
“That power of yours. Make good use of it.” he reminded. Mars nodded. “I will.” “Oh, and…” Kelso paused. “If you happen to meet Carrie, can you tell her that I love her?” “Sure, why not?” “Oh, and tell Richard to watch over her.” Kelso added while his body started to fade slowly. “And where are you going?” Mars yelled. Kelso smiled.
“Home.”

René sat quietly on her couch reading "The Odyssey" when she heard a knock at the door. "I still don't get it" she mumbled to herself as she got up. Walking towards the door she pulled her hair back out of her face.
She opened the door to find an annoyed looking 13 year old, long dark curly hair frizzing from humidity and arms crossed, breathing heavy sighs. "Hello René, I know we're a bit early, but Alex just couldn't wait to come over today" Ben smiled while Alex rolled her eyes.
"It's no problem Ben, come in, please. I was just about to get out some paints for our session today." René said cheerfully, realizing Alex's absolute reluctance. Typical preteen behavior she giggled to herself.
Ben and Alex entered the house, Alex walked over to the couch and slumped into it. "Finding everything ok?" Ben starred intently at René. There was a glimmer in his eye but it was easily seen to René that his mind was fastidiously multi-tasking. "Yes, yes I am thank you. Tom, Ethan and Richard have been very helpful. I'm curious though," she lowered her voice, "I thought there would be more, children" she spoke with hesitation.
"Oh, well, a couple of families had to be unexpectedly moved off Island for a while. Alex and Carl are going to be it for a little longer." Ben stated matter of factly with out losing his gleaming smile "Well, I'll be off then, get out of you two ladies "hair" so to speak."
René walked Ben to the door. "See you in an hour or so" René said. "Yes, of course." Ben returned cordially and left the house closing the door behind him.
"I hate him," Alex moaned
"Alex, hate is a very strong word, your father only wants what is absolutely best for you."
"How would you know, you just got here 10 minutes ago" She exaggerated.
"He's a single father Alex, he's going to do whatever he can to protect you. Now," she said while going into the next room to gather her art bag. "let's paint outside today."
Alex jumped up from the couch with some excitement. René knew she felt most comfortable outdoors.

Day 75 - Night
Just as Jo expected, she and Jack were housed on opposite ends of the Others' village. She and Chase were assigned to take care of Zoe as she recovered, and Juliet and Jack were assigned to tend to Ben. Fortunately Jo had managed to negotiate having her own house with Ben after stubbornly refusing to bunk with Chase again.
"That's no minor accomplishment," she reminded herself smugly. She was quickly learning that she could easily get Ben to do what she wanted using her 'little sister' act, but of course Ben remained the master manipulator and could never actually be persuaded to do something against his will. For now, Jo was content with her small victory.
It was the middle of the night, and Jo couldn't sleep. Her mind constantly drifted to the imminent departure of Jack, Juliet and Zoe. Jack had promised he would take her with them, but Jo placed very little hope in his promise. Ben had made it clear to her that in no way would he allow his only surviving family member to leave the island.
She crawled out of bed and grabbed a midnight snack from the fridge and a book from the bookshelf. She was just about to settle into her overstuffed armchair when a light tapping at the front door caught her attention.
Jo opened the door to find Jack standing there.
"Jack, what are you doing? Ben will have a fit if he knows..."
"I don't care." Jack stepped inside and pulled Jo close to him, kissing her lovingly. He nudged the door closed with his foot and lifted Jo off the ground as she wrapped her legs around him, still kissing passionately.
**********
Jo gazed at Jack as he slept, and felt a curious sense of deja 'vu. She remembered the night he had met Sara, when he was overwhelmed with guilt over being unable to fix her, and had spent the night with Jo as a distraction. Jo told herself that this time was different, that Jack had chosen her above anybody else. Still, a nagging fear gnawed at her, and she suddenly felt unexplicably fearful about her future with Jack.
Jack sensed her staring and opened his eyes. He smiled at her and pulled her close for a morning kiss. "I should go," he mumbled after releasing her.
Jo agreed. There was no point in arousing Ben's wrath so soon after they had arrived in the village. They only had minutes before the rising sun would make it impossible for him to return to his own house undetected.
"I'll come back as often as I can," Jack promised before sneaking out the door. Left alone in the bed, Jo smiled sadly. Jack was finally hers, but how long would it last this time?

René couldn't sleep. Her dreams were so vivid lately it was hard to get restful sleep. She crawled out of bed, pulled on some pants and a man's button down shirt and tip toed down the hallway sure to not wake Cindy, Zack or Emma in the other rooms. Slowly, she opened the front door and walked out onto the front steps. Looking across the way she sighed. She decided to walk out to the swing set. It was a good place to think and clear her head. She heard the snapping of a twig from across the way, it made her jump a bit and she gasped. Looknig up she saw Jack coming from Jo's house.
"What the hell is he doing?" she thought to herself. She didn't want to attract any unneeded attention and decided it was best to not call out after him. "I'm going to have to speak to Jo about this" she quietly spoke to herself. "Ben would be furious"
She continued her path to the swings and sat down and gently rocked.
"Early morning." René was startled a bit but recognized the voice.
"Morning Richard." She looked up at him, "Couldn't sleep either?" She knew better than to ask, he always kept such a strange schedule.
"Oh, no, just getting some fresh fruit for Carrie. She's having a hard time right now." He was reluctant to tell René but knew he could trust her with information.
"Sounds nice." She responded with ease, letting the cool morning breeze flow through her hair. Richard noticed her eyes color seemed different.
"You ok?" He asked tenderly, but probing.
"Sleep has been hard. Better here than at the Hydra, but the dreams, just so..." she drifted. Obviously Richard knew the eye color change was due to tears.
"Different" René starred at Richard expecting more of an answer. At least more than she's gotten from Ben becasue of his current condition.
"I know it's a change," he continued "it's still an adjustment for you René. But please don't be scared by anything. You of all people know this place is special"
"I do," she said as she shook her head.
"Well, I've got breakfast to make. We'll talk again soon." Richard reassured her. René waved at him as he kept walking towards his house and she tried to injest everything that had gone on over the past few days.
She sighed intently again. She had never been so uncertain in her life before.
Just as the dawn began to break through she saw a figure standing across the paddock. He was tall and thin, yet had a muscular build and short blondish hair. She trembled a bit thinking she was having visions of her dead husband again. But he was different. He walked towards her, she was still and couldn't move, even if she wanted to run to her house and scream to all the world she was transfixed by his presence. He got so close and knelt down beside her, gently took her hand and began to speak. She couldn't breath.
"René, it's time to begin. It's time to help him on his journey."
"W-w-who's journey" she barely got out a whisper.
"You'll figure it out, I believe in you."
René was slightly frightened, she really didn't know if this was all happening. She closed her eyes, took a deep breath and went to speak again. He was gone, she bolted up from the swing looking around frantically in circles purveying all the barrocks. He was no where.
"Help him" was all a whisper she heard in her head now.
She ran back to her house as fast as she could. "The answers have to be there" she told herself. She burst through the door and began rifling through all of her paintings and sketches.

THis is meant to be before Ali's post Carrie sat on the step of the front porch, fiddling with a piece of cocksfoot and staring into the distance, her thoughts consumed with Kelso's last words - he's home. Who was home? Where was home? How long had he been home? Why had Kelso waited until his last breath to tell her? Why had he even felt the need to tell her? "Either you're thinking, or that dactylis glomerata has really annoyed you." Richard's familiar voice came from behind Carrie, making her jump. "Do you have to use the latin?" Carrie said as Richard sat down next to her, smiling. "Can't you just call it cocksfoot like us normal folk?" "Now where's the fun in that?" Richard grinned. "Although technically, it's a dactylis glomerata santai, if you wanna be more specific to the sub-species." "Really?" Carrie sarcastically faked interest. "Now, I thought it was an I-don't-give-a-damnus. Learn something new every day!" They both laughed. "And no, I'm not annoyed at it. If I was, it would know. I do not know, she must be thinking." She added the last part on in a squeaky voice, feigning it to be the cocksfoot's voice. Carrie and Richard both laughed again. "I was just thinking about Kelso's last words," she said. Richard was intrigued. "Really? What did he say?" " He's home. I've been trying to figure out who he meant ... the only person I can think of is my dad, but how could Kelso know where he is, and why did he wait until the last moment to tell me? It doesn't make any sense. Unless, maybe he'd been waiting for the right moment to say, but it hadn't come yet ..." Carrie trailed off, her thoughts too complicated and mixed up for her to voice. Richard nodded in agreement, but didn't say anything. They both watched with absent-minded interest as they saw Jack leave Jo's house and run over to his, trying not to give attention to himself. "Looks like we're not the only ones who got some action last night," Richard said quietly, so Jack wouldn't hear. Carrie stifled a laugh. "I think looking around furitively actually brings unwanted attention, rather than pushing it away," she said. "Maybe Jack should learn some acting skills. Just play it cool ..." They laughed again, then something hit Carrie suddenly. "I've just thought of something," she said. "I'll be back in a sec ..." Standing up, she made her way back into the house, grabbed her dad's old guitar from its stand, and sat in the bedroom, hoping the age-old song would come back to her. Carrie tried to concentrate on her drawing, as she heard her parents shouting upstairs. She tried to drown it out, thinking of other things, but she could still hear them. Luckily, their argument was interrupted by a knocking on the door. Carrie heard the sound of her mother making her way down the stairs, and opening the door. Voices, then the visitor stepped inside and the door was closed.
Carrie was surprised to see the door of the front room opening, then her mother entered, followed by a man Carrie hadn't seen before. He had dark hair and particularly dark eyes. He looked at Carrie in a strange way, as if he were sizing her up.
"Carrie, this man wants to talk to you. Be good, okay?" The last sentence of her mother's words sounded perfectly normal for a mother of a five-year-old to say, but Carrie and her mother both knew what would happen if she wasn't good. Her mother left the room and shut the door behind her, leaving Carrie and the man alone.
"Hello, Carrie." The man bent down in front of where Carrie sat at her low table, looking at her in the way he had before, as if he were sizing her up. "My name's Richard. I run a school for young children, who are extremely special ... and I think you might be one of them."
Carrie looked up at Richard. He must have been mistaken, her mother had drilled in the fact that she was worthless. She wasn't special.
Richard looked at the picture Carrie was drawing. There was a beach, with people on it, with dense forests behind the beach. A large, misshaped object lay to one side of the people. He looked at it curiously, smiling. Jacob had been right. He looked back up at the young child. "Mind if I show you something?"

Mars moaned in agony. She lay still on the ground, not yet aware that she couldn’t do anything else. She let out a sharp hiss as waves of pain began to flood her body. Mars opened her eyes. Everything was blurry. She tried to move her fingers, but another wave of pain struck her right in her chest, causing her to gasp for breath. Mars moved her head to look to her right, and through her blurry vision she could see flames engulfing everything in its’ path, sending thick, black, suffocating smoke towards her.
She tried her best to sit up, but she couldn’t. The pain was too intense. She then forced herself to sit up - ignoring the immense pain all over her body, but she couldn’t. She collapsed back to the ground. Breathing heavily, she felt someone touching her forehead. She looked to her left and saw a man wearing a long, white tunic. She opened her mouth to speak, but she started to lose consciousness.
“It’s not time yet.” the man said - his voice barely heard by Mars. He then started to walk away towards the flames, and then disappeared, as Mars watched in amazement before losing her consciousness.

Day 76
“Poor Roger. Sorry about your arm, dude.” Hurley said. Mars, Hurley and Jin have found an overturned old, blue van with the skeletal remains of a man with a work suit which has on it a DHARMA logo patch, the name “Roger”, and the designation “Workman” on the jungle. She volunteered along with Jin to help Hurley start the van. Mars watched as Jin made a gesture, pointing at the back of the van. “Let’s check it out.” Hurley said as he opened the back door. Mars gasped when she saw cans of DHARMA beer scattered all over the compartment. “Dude, Roger was on a beer run.” Hurley added. Jin started to speak in Korean. “You want to what?” Hurley asked as Jin continued to speak in Korean. “Oh” Mars said “You want to take Roger out? And turn it over. I understand!”
Mars, Jin and Hurley moved into position so they can take Roger out of the van. “On 3. 1-2-3.” Jin pulled him out, but his skull breaks off in the process. Mars laughed. Hurley shrugged. “We’ll get that later.”
After helping Jin placing a long pole underneath the van to tip it over, Mars heard footsteps getting closer towards her. She was dumbstruck when she saw Sawyer coming out of the jungle. He noticed the van. “What are you all doing?”, he asked. Hurley ran to hug him. “Dude! You’re alive! You’re alive!” Sawyer chuckled. “Yeah, yeah, Snuffy. Good to see you, too. I'll be damned, you all found yourselves a hippy car.“ Jin reached for a hug. “Sawyer”, he said “Jin-bo. How are you going?” “Good see you.” Jin replied with a thick Korean accent. “Well, look at that. Somebody’s hooked on phonics.” Sawyer chuckled and turned to Mars. “How you going, Mars bar?” “I’m great, Sawyer.” Mars gave Sawyer a pat on his back. “I’m good.”
“Hey,” Mars asked “Where’s Jack and Kate? Are they with you? Are they alright?” “Kate’s with me, but the Doc - they’ve still got him.” Sawyer sighed. Mars nodded. So they still got Jack. “Okay. It's okay. It's going to be alright. Jack's going to be alright. We all are.” Hurley said, cheering everyone up. “Well, what a relief.” Sawyer rolled his eyes. “Naw, see, things are getting better. The car, you coming back safely -- it's a sign.” “Yeah, a sign I want my stuff back.” Sawyer shot back. “Uh-uh. You’re going to help us fix this thing.” Hurley demanded. “Now why would I do that?”
“Because there’s beer.” Hurley smiled.

Carrie absent-mindedly made her way through the jungle, not really thinking about where she was going. She was happy, for now - she'd woken up to find Richard waiting for her, a breakfast ready made. He'd turned into a romantic suddenly.
Carrie froze as she heard voices in the distance, coming from a nearby clearing. Quietly, she edged her way nearer. She'd picked up a few tricks for keeping quiet in the jungle from Richard over the past couple of years, but she still snapped twigs and brushed against tree barks.
“Whoa, it’s flat and it stinks!” A southern Tennessee accent came from the clearing. It reminded Carrie of her father.
Looking carefully between the trees, she saw a rusty old campervan sitting in the middle of the clearing, accompanied by some of the survivors and a skeleton. Carrie recognised Hurley sitting in the front seat, Jin looking in the engine, and Sawyer and Mars sitting either side of the skeleton, which someone – presumably Sawyer – had propped up against the van. Sawyer was taking a drink from an old can of beer.
“Dude, that beer's been sitting there since before Rocky III, maybe even II. It's probably poison by now,” Hurley said.
“Skeletor seems to like it!” Sawyer took his beer can and knocked it against the skeleton’s head. “Bottoms up.”
“That's not cool, dude. That guy had a mom, a family, and friends. Oh, and a name,” Hurley looked at the faded clothing still wrapped around the bones. “It’s Roger Workman.”
“It’s work man, you Blockhead. He was a DHARMA janitor.” Sawyer rolled his eyes at Hurley’s stupidity.
Mars laughed, and Carrie put her hand to her mouth to stop herself from laughing too. On doing so, she lost grip of the tree she was holding onto, and slipped. Everyone (except Roger) immediately looked up at the noise.
“Who’s there?” Sawyer demanded. Carrie tried to shrink back into the shadows, but she’d been spotted now. “We know you’re there!”
Reluctantly, Carrie emerged from within the trees. “It’s okay,” she said. “It’s only me.”
“Carrie?” Mars looked at her in surprise.
“You two know each other?” Sawyer looked from Mars to Carrie suspiciously. Jin said something in Korean, but no-one bothered to try to understand.
“Dude, she came to our camp a couple of days ago. Kelso brought her, before she disappeared in the middle of the night, to “find herself”, as Locke said,” Hurley explained.
Carrie raised her eyebrows. “He said that, did he?” She’d been told by Richard that Locke was a bit of a spiritualist. “I actually went for a walk.”
“Long walk, dude,” said Hurley.
“Yeah, stuff happened along the way.” Carrie looked at Mars, both women knowing exactly what she was talking about. Again, Jin said something in Korean, perhaps the same thing.
Hurley raced over to him. “Whoa, whoa, whoa, can you fix it?”
“No,” Jin tried to speak some English. “No fix.”
“But you have to!” Hurley sounded frustrated, “can’t you try, dude? I mean, we’ve got to get this thing running.”
“Leave the man alone!” Sawyer looked up from his beer. “He’s right, no fix. Take a look at that mess – no way it’s gonna get running. How thick are you?”
“What’s your problem, man?” Hurley challenged him, “why don’t you want this to work?”
“I don’t care if it works,” Sawyer protested indignantly. “Why is it so important to you?”
“Because we could all use a little hope.”
“If it’s hope you’re looking for Ese, you’re on the wrong damn island,” scoffed Sawyer. “There sure as hell ain’t no hope here.”
Annoyed, Hurley walked off. Carrie, Mars, Sawyer and Jin watched him walk off, Jin wondering what the hell had just happened.
Mars stood up and went over to Carrie, as Sawyer began trying to teach Jin some English words. “Carrie, I need to talk to you,” she said. “About Kelso.”
Carrie sighed. She didn’t particularly like the subject of her dead best friend. “What is it?” She asked.
“Last night, I woke up in the dead of night … and as crazy as it might sound, Kelso was there.” As Mars said this, Carrie frowned. “It was weird,” Mars continued, “he didn’t look like a ghost, but he didn’t look real. I’m starting to wonder if it was a dream or not. I mean, it musta been, but it was just so real …”
Carrie looked at Mars curiously. “You could have been hallucinating,” she said. “Or, maybe you did see a ghost. Why are you telling me this, anyway?”
“He told me to tell you something,” Mars said. This caught Carrie’s attention. She was pretty sure by now, that Kelso had meant her father when he’d said “he’s home”, but she needed confirmation. “He said to tell you that he loves you.”
Carrie looked away from Mars, and towards the distant ocean. Kelso had somehow appeared to Mars – even though he was dead – to tell her to tell Carrie that he loved her? She knew anyway, why did he have to come back from the dead to tell her? And … why hadn’t he told her? Why had he told Mars?
Carrie looked back at Mars, and spoke the question which was in her head. “Why did he tell you and not me?”
“I asked him the same thing,” Mars agreed. “He said it was because you’re with Richard now. He said he’s happy, because you’re happy.”
Carrie didn’t reply. If Kelso was happy with her being with Richard, why had he tried to kill him? It didn’t make any sense. But still … some things, Carrie reasoned in her thoughts, were best left unknown.
A beer can rolled past the two women’s feet, and down the hill. As Hurley stood up to go back to the beach, Carrie looked back at Jin, Sawyer and Roger.
“What’re you looking at, Tinkerbell?” Sawyer yelled over to her.
"Nothing, Cohee. Can't a girl look somewhere anymore?" Carrie, with her Tennessee blood, was just as good and quick as Sawyer at making up nicknames.
"Cohee? Whoa, looks like I got some competition on my hands," joked Sawyer.
"Yeah, when you got a father from Tennessee, it's amazing what nicknames you can think of," replied Carrie. "Pass us one of those beers, I ain't had one in ages."
