Day 90 - NIGHT
Jo stood completely frozen, unable to turn her eyes away from Richard and Carrie. She had known they were an item, and knew that Ben disapproved of it, but she would never have imagined they would be so brazen! And for Richard to be caught in such an undignified position was completely unheard of. After a moment her survival reflex kicked in and she fled the scene, running as fast as she could back to the survivors camp. She ran straight to Jack, barely catching her breath.
"Jack, we have to move. We can't stay here! There are Others nearby!"
"Whoa, wait, did you see them?" Jack asked.
Jo nodded. "We have to go! NOW!"
Day 91
The group of survivors had been hiking for hours without any sign of the Others, but Jo remained fearful that they would be followed. Inwardly, she debated whether that might solve her problem of preventing the phone call from taking place, but she concluded that it probably would not be the safest way to go about it. The Others would surely rely on gunfire, especially if things went badly back at the survivors' camp ambush. It was a chance they couldn't take. Jo would have to do it on her own, some other way.
"We're nearly there," Rousseau called out to encourage the group. As they reached the top of the hill they had been climbing, they all stopped in turn. Ben and Alex stood in front of them, waiting to meet them.
"Ben!" Jo cried out instinctively. It was the first time she had seen him since they were left behind at the barracks. She began to run towards him but was roughly pulled back by Kate.
"Don't go," she advised. "Wait and see what he has to say." Kate left her to scout the area behind Ben and Alex.
Jo followed Kate's advice and waited. Ben approached the group and nodded towards Naomi.
"Hi, I'm Benjamin, I don't believe we've had the pleasure..."
Jack interrupted with a snarl. "Don't talk to him!"
Ben tried again, focusing his attention on Jo this time. He managed a weak, creepy smile for his little sister. "Hello Jo, it's been a long time. I trust things are well?"
"Leave her alone Ben!" Jack yelled. "What do you want?"
"Just a moment of your time. To talk, you and me, alone." Ben spread his arms to show that he held no weapons.
After bantering for a few minutes, Jack finally conceded. "Five minutes," he agreed. He and Ben walked further down the hill to talk out of earshot of the other survivors. Jo tried to move closer but Kate held her back again. "Let them sort it out," she whispered to Jo. Jo reluctantly consented, but her sense of foreboding was rising out of control. Things must be very, very bad if Ben himself had come to stop them.
She watched as Ben and Jack argued over a walkie-talkie and the next thing she knew Jack had violently shoved Ben to the ground and was beating him senseless. Jo hated Ben, but this situation felt very wrong to her and she simply couldn't allow Jack to kill him. Ben was her brother, after all. She tore away from Kate's grasp and screamed at Jack to stop. She desperately tried to pull him off Ben.
"JACK! Stop it!! You're going to kill him!"
"He killed them!" Jack ranted, and continued to punch Ben in the face. Jo found it impossible to stop him.
"Please Jack! Stop it!!" she begged. She grabbed for his arms and finally managed to push him off of Ben. Jack stood up and roughly forced Ben to stand up as well. He dragged Ben up the hill to the survivors and threw him to the ground.
"Tie him up," Jack directed Rousseau. "He's coming with us."
"You can't do this, Jack!" Jo yelled as Ben was tied at the wrists by a rope and led like a dog to the radio tower. "This is inhumane!"
"He doesn't care," Ben replied bitterly. "He's lost his sense of reason."
Ben's appearance changed everything for Jo. She forgot all about her promise to Zoe to sabotage the radio signal. All she could think about was Ben's pain, and how to make it stop. She felt oddly detached from the entire situation; all she could see was that her brother needed her, and she knew she had to fix him.
When they finally reached the tower Rousseau tied Ben tightly to a tree. Jack and Naomi stepped into the radio station to switch off Rousseau's distress signal but Jo was oblivious to everything around her. She took an old t-shirt out of her backpack, ripped off a piece and began to dab at Ben's cuts. Rousseau watched her carefully. Jo was suddenly overcome with a long-forgotten sensation of tenderness towards Ben. She held his face in her hands and continued to clean the blood of his face.
"You have to stop them," Ben whispered to Jo. "They cannot make this call."
"Stop talking, Ben," Jo responded. "Let me fix you." She continued to dab at his cuts and Ben winced from the sting. Still, somehow, he found the strength to continue to protest.
"Jack! I know you think you're saving your people. But you need to stop this. It's a mistake."
Jack smirked. "The mistake was listening to you."
"This'll be your last chance, Jack. I'm telling you, making that call is the beginning of the end."
Naomi interrupted excitedly. "I've got it, I've got a signal!"
Ben's expression darkened and Jo took a step back, fearful of his reaction. "Jack please," Ben begged. "You don't know what you're doing!"
"I know exactly what I'm doing," Jack replied.
Naomi began the call to her freighter but she shocked all the survivors when she unexpectedly fell forward, blood dripping from her mouth, and revealed a Bowie knife embedded in her back. In unison they turned towards the source of the knife attack: John Locke stood several feet away from the radio station, arms poised in a way that made it obvious he was the attacker. He took a step forward and pulled a gun out of his cargo pants, pointing it at Jack's chest. Jo's heart pounded in her chest.
"JOHN!" Jack yelled in frustration
"Step back, Jack," Locke commanded.
Jack whirled around suddenly when he heard sounds in the foliage behind him. "Who is it?" he demanded. "Show yourself! I know you're there!"
Jo and the others surrounding her gasped when they saw Mars walk slowly, hesitantly, out of the clearing.
"Hey, Jack." Mars smiled weakly.
Claire and Rose rushed towards Mars to help her, delighted to see that she was still alive and well. They were full of questions for her, but they would have to wait. Right now their survival depended on Jack making the call to Naomi's freighter.
"Your timing is impeccable," Ben remarked sarcastically.
Ben's snarky remark reminded Jack of the situation at hand. He focused his attention on John Locke and the lifeless body of Naomi that lay before him. "What did you do?" he demanded of Locke.
"What I had to. Now step back."
Jack dove for the phone and Locke fired his gun, missing Jack by only a few feet. Jo screamed.
Ben mustered up the strength to yell at John. "Do it, John! Shoot him! Do what you need to do..." He was cut short by Rousseau knocking him unconscious with her elbow.
Jo instinctively slapped Rousseau. "Don't you touch him!" she screamed. Rousseau shoved her to the ground without hesitation. Jo's head hit a rock and she was overcome with dizziness. Kate helped her to stand up and she was forced to watch the scene unfold, unable to help either Ben or Jack in this horrible situation.
Locke continued to plead with Jack. "Please. Put the phone down."
Jack shook his head defiantly. "No. You're done keeping me on this Island."
Locke cocked the barrel of his gun to emphasize his intentions. "I will kill you if I have to." Jo began to black out, but Kate, her unlikely ally in this situation, held her steady.
Jack dared Locke to shoot, and Locke backed down. "Jack. You're not supposed to do this," he pleaded feebly.
The survivors listened as a voice rose from the satellite phone.
Jack sought Jo's face in the crowd around him and he smiled specifically at her as he spoke into the phone. "My name is Jack Shephard. I'm one of the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815. Can you get a fix on our location?"
The voice that answered sent the crowd into an eruption of cheers. "Hell yeah we can. Sit tight. We'll be right there."
Jo and Ben were the only ones that weren't celebrating this happy event. In the midst of the cheers, she remembered her promise to Zoe, and she fell against the same tree that held Ben captive. "Oh my God, I failed," she moaned. "I'm so sorry Zoe!" She held her face in her hands and wept bitterly.

Rose and Claire walked towards Mars.
"Are you okay? Where have you been?" Claire asked.
"I'm fine. It's a long story - I'll tell you guys later." Mars interrupted.
"Oh my God, are those bullet wounds on your chest?" Rose winced.
"Rose, I'm fine. Right now I --" Mars paused. He glanced at Jack and saw a satellite phone being held by him. Not far from Locke is a lifeless body of a woman.
"Locke killed her." Claire explained.
"Why?" Mars asked. "Who is she?"
"She parachuted to the island a few days ago. She has a satellite phone with her. We're now trying to make contact with the outside world." Claire smiled. "We're going home, Mars." She place her hands on Mars' shoulders.
"What? But we can't let --" Mars was dumbfounded when she saw Jack speaking into the phone.
"My name is Jack Shephard. I'm one of the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815. Can you get a fix on our location?" he said confidently.
Mars looked at Locke. Locke looked back at her, a hint of disappointment on his facial expression. The crowd cheers when a voice was heard from the phone, signaling the survivors that rescue is on its' way.
Claire gave Mars a hug, but Mars didn't hug back. She watched as Locke started to walk away into the jungle. She was too late. Jack walked towards Mars and glanced at her chest.
"I need to know what happened." He said slowly. "What happened to you and where have you been."
"Well, that friend of yours named Carrie put those bullets here." Mars said, her voice filled with anger, whilst pointing at her chest. "Ben told her to kill me."
Jack looked over his shoulder towards Ben, and then to her wounds. "We better do something about it before it gets infected." Jack opened his bag and pulled out some bandages. "So what happened after she shot you?"
Mars paused. "I don't know. I was unconscious. I don't even know how long I've been missing for." she said sadly.
Jack shrugged. "You've been missing for around 10 days, I suppose. Now if you don't mind, I need to fix your wounds."
Mars looked down at her chest. "Nah, that's fine. I can fix it." She placed her hands on her chest and healed her wounds using her power once again. Jack watched in amazement.
"You can use your bandages for someone else." Mars quipped. Jack grinned. "Well I'm glad you're okay." he said.
Jack packed his bag and was about to leave when Mars called his name.
"Are you sure calling those people on the boat is the right thing to do?" she asked.
Jack looked at her. "Of course it is. Why?"
Mars looked away. "Nothing."
Jack walked away, not keeping an eye of her. Mars took a deep breath and started to walk towards the crowd, joining them on their celebration.

Day 91
Carrie was out in the jungle, picking fruit. Richard had wanted to go with her, but she'd insisted on going on her own - she wanted some alone time to think in the open air. She hoisted herself up on a branch to allow herself to reach an apple which was higher up, but she heard someone shout "hey!" and she was knocked to the ground. Carrie stood up and looked around, bemused, and her eyes widened in shock to see Mars.
"Mars!" She exclaimed. "I thought you were dead!"
"So did I," Mars replied angrily, before throwing lightning bolts at Carrie, knocking her to the ground. "You tried to kill me, you stupid son of a bitch!"
Carrie cried out in pain, protectively clutching her stomach. "Mars! Please, stop! I'm begging you, you have to stop!" She pleaded.
"Why should I?" Mars shouted.
"Because I'm pregnant!"
"Bollocks," Mars said, annoyed. She stopped anyway, but Carrie could tell she still wanted to attack her. "I trusted you, Carrie. I thought you were different. I thought, because you were so close to Kelso, you wouldn't be like the Others. But I was wrong. You're exactly the same."
"I know. I'm sorry, I really am. I can't begin to tell you how much. I know how you must be feeling right now."
Mars scoffed. "You don't know what it's like to be dead."
Carrie stood up, and took a step towards Mars. "Don't I? Well, let me ask you something, Mars. Do you know what it's like for your own father to abandon you when you need him most? Do you know what it's like for your own mother to hate your guts? Do you know what it's like when you try and try for months on end for something you really want, but you never succeed? Do you know what it's like to find out the man you love slept with another woman? Do you know, Mars McTavish, what it's like to hold someone you love, and watch them die because they love you too much?" There was a pause. "So no, I don't know what it's like to be dead. But I know what it's like to feel dead."
Mars was silent for a moment. "I have to go," she said. "I need to catch up with my people." She turned around and walked away, in the direction of the radio tower.

Mars sat down under a tree and stared aimlessly at the horizon.
She couldn't possibly tell how she felt at the moment - everything is jumbled. She felt happy because her fellow survivors are 'coming home', scared because Walt told her that the people on the boat are not who they say they were, angry because Carrie shot back at her when she saw her, and guilty because Carrie is pregnant when she attacked her.
Mars' thoughts were interrupted by a sharp sting on her thigh. Mars ran her hand down her thigh and was surprised to feel something inside the pocket of her shorts. She quickly put her hand inside his pocket and pulled out the object inside.
Mars glanced at it, surprised. It is a silver necklace with a small, silver sword pendant attached to it. Mars didn't notice Sun walking towards her.
"What's that?" She asked.
"It's a Christmas present." Mars said, not taking an eye off the object on her hand.
'That's strange' she thought. 'I left this thing back in London.'
--------------------------------------------
Mars wiped the blood dripping down her nose. She looked around and panicked when she couldn't find the rest of the team.
"Sawyer?" she called out. "Jin? Juliet?"
Mars walked further into the jungle, not knowing what to do or where she's going. She looked up to the sky and trembled in fear when she realized that the skies are getting darker. She crouched behind a tree, tears started to dwell on the corners of her eyes. She closed her eyes and started to count, hoping that each passing seconds would ease her mind.
"One... two... three... four..." she whispered.
Mars gasped when she heard the snapping of a twig and a man's voice from the distance. Mars listened and waited. The man is speaking in a language she didn't understand, but she could tell that the man is under an immense pain.
Mars stood up and walked towards the sound slowly. She saw a man sitting on the ground, clutching his left leg. Mars quickly hid behind a nearby tree and was utterly shocked when she found out who the man is.
Richard.
Mars quickly jumped out from her hiding place and started to walk towards him. To Mars' surprise, Richard pointed his handgun towads her.
"Who are you and what are you doing here?" he barked.
Mars jerked in surprise. "My... name is Mars McTavish and.. I'm just going to look at your wound. I would like to help."
Faraday have told her and the rest of the survivors about the time flashes that have happened. Mars didn't quite understand what he meant, but she somewhat knew what he was talking about. Now, everything makes perfect sense.
Mars knelt beside him, the gun's barrel just inches away from her forehead. "May - may I please look at your wound? I'm not going to hurt you."
Richard moved her hand away and Mars saw bone sticking out from his skin. Blood started to drip down the ground below. Richard hissed in pain.
"What have you done?" Mars wondered.
"I fell off my horse." Richard quipped.
Richard groaned and squirmed in pain when Mars put her hands on top of his wound. "I'm sorry, but this is what I have to do." she said. Chenneling her power into her hand once more, Mars watched as blue waves of electricy started to travel down her hands and into Richard's sore leg.
"That's amazing." Richard said in astonishment.
Mars stopped after a moment or two, and looked at Richard's now healed leg. "There you go." she said, pleased.
"Thanks so much." Richard said. "By the way, I haven't introduced myself. My name is Richard. Richard Alpert." Richard shook Mars' hand.
"Mars McTavish." Mars replied.

Carrie made her way downstairs, having just put Lynette to bed. She was 6 months by now, and growing fast. Carrie wished Richard was there, to see his daughter grow up. She went into the kitchen and turned on the radio.
"Every long lost dream Led me to where you are Others who broke my heart, They were like northern stars Pointing me on my way Into your loving arms This much I know is true That God blessed the broken road That led me straight to you But now I'm just rolling home Into my lover's arms This much I know is true"
Carrie quickly turned the radio off again. The song reminded her too much of Richard. Deciding she wasn't hungry anymore, she left the kitchen and started making her way outside, and as she left, she heard Destiny in the living room, practising a song.
"You used to call me your angel Said I was sent straight down from heaven You'd hold me close in your arms I loved the way you felt so strong I never wanted you to leave I wanted you to stay here holding me I miss you I miss your smile And I still shed a tear Every once in a while And even though it's different now You're still here somehow My heart won't let you go And I need you to know I miss you, sha la la la la I miss you"
Carrie ran outside and made her way to the nearby lake, where she sat and thought. Both songs had been too true. They reminded her too much of Richard. She reached into her pocket and pulled out the plane ticket Jacob had given her earlier, making a decision. She was going to get on that plane, and hope for the best that it would truly lead her to the Island. If not, well ... it wouldn't matter. At least she would have tried.
Carrie made her way back to camp, a bit dazed by her encounter with Mars. She couldn't understand why she'd suddenly had an outburst like that. The worst thing, she thought, about being a psychologist, is I can figure out other people, but never myself.
She arrived back at camp, and put the fruit down next to the other food. Although she hadn't spotted him when she came back, Richard came up to her, checking if she was alright. Carrie wrapped her arms around his torso and hugged him tightly, resting her head on his shoulder.
"What's wrong?" Richard asked.
"Nothing," Carrie replied. "I just need a hug."
Richard smiled, holding her tight. "Happy to oblige," he said.
"I love you, Richard." Carrie whispered, wondering if she should tell him Mars was alive. He shouldn't be paticularly concerned though, to him she was just another one of the survivors.
"I love you too," Richard said, kissing Carrie on the top of her head. "And I always will."

Day 91
Following Jack's mantra, Jo only allowed herself to give in to her fear and self-pity until she counted to five. After that, she pulled herself together and surveyed the scene before her.
Jo was relieved to see that Jack was tending to Mars' wounds. She had a million questions for Mars about her lengthy absence and her time with the Others, and was particularly curious to know the whereabouts of Dr. Chase, but her curiosity turned to disbelief as she watched Mars heal herself with electricity.
"I could use that kind of power right about now," Ben muttered, reminding Jo that he still needed medical attention as well. Jo continued to clean Ben's cuts with unaccustomed tenderness as Ben watched Jack solemnly. He was now on the walkie-talkie with Hurley, and he winked at Ben as he told Hurley that they were about to be rescued.
"Please get Rousseau for me," Ben asked Jo.
Jo obeyed him without question. She felt partly responsible for Jack's attack on him, and wanted to make it up to Ben. She also thought he knew much more about the freighter people than she did, and wanted as much information from him as possible. Once again, she was under his control, as much as the idea disgusted her.
She brought Rousseau to Ben. "I need you to do me a favor. I need you to take Alex and get as far from here as possible. Everyone who stays here is going to die. Now get Alex and get away right now, I don't care where you go, just go, I will not have my daughter..."
Jo gasped as Rousseau violently hit Ben in the face.
"She is not your daughter," Rousseau growled.
Jack chose that moment to announce to the survivors that they would be heading back to the beach to wait for their rescue. "I'm asking Jo to lead you back," he said. He glanced at her questioningly, and she solemnly nodded her assent. The survivors began to collect their belongings and Jack walked up to Jo and Ben. "I'm taking Rousseau and Ben with me," he spoke in a low voice. "Naomi has gone missing. We'll find her, and then catch up to you."
Jo looked skeptical. "If you hurt him again, Jack..."
Jack looked confused. "Why is it you're defending him? He kept us in cages..."
Jo felt her loyalty split into two; she was torn between the man that she had always loved, and the man that shared her blood. "I can't explain," she whispered quietly. "But I'll be waiting for you at the beach camp, okay?"
Jack pulled her close for a quick kiss, then turned to talk to Rousseau. Jo whispered a quick "see you later" to Ben, then pulled on her backpack and prepared to lead the survivors back to camp.

Day 91 right before dusk
René finally got to her camp. She was exhausted from running almost nonstop since her last water break / encounter. She saw Richard sitting out by his tent with Carrie. Others were just moving about their now daily routine. Richard saw René as she approached and got up to meet her. At that same moment Eric walked from around his tent and saw René and went to meet her as well. Richard yelled over at him to get her some more water. She tried to speak but couldn't catch her breath. "Sit down, drink some water." He said as Eric ran up and handed it over to her.
René closed her eyes and got her breathing under control. She did her best to stay calm, to explain herself as clearly as possible. She told them everything she witnessed. About Ben trying to talk Jack out of calling the boat, having Tom execute Jin, Sayid and Bernard. Her concern for Ben's welfare after his beating from Jack and his current condition. "John killed her, he came traipsing straight out of the jungle and knifed her right in the back." Richard tried to absorb everything that René was saying. She stood up, her sides started to cramp and she couldn't seem to sit still.
"Jo was there too." René went on, "She's the one that pulled Jack off of Ben. I think he would have killed him Richard, if it weren't for her I'm sure of it." Eric handed her a refill of water. "What do we do Richard? Those people are coming."
Richard stood up and gazed over at Carrie protectively. "We pack in the morning, we need to get everyone to the temple. We'll get him back when the time is right."
René didn't ask how Richard would know when the time was right, she knew he had ways with the Island. "Get something to eat, rest." He said to her as he walked back over to Carrie. Eric took the prime opportunity to scoop René up and hug her tightly.
"I was so worried." He whispered in her ear.
She hugged him back. "I know." He looked at her and could tell she was incredibly worried for Ben's safety. "He'll be ok, he always finds a way." Eric tried to reassure her.
"I'm not sure this time Eric." Her chin quivered as she said it. She knew what she was told. He'd have to make a sacrifice. Problem was that she didn't know what it was, and she feared the worst.
At this point Eric didn't care who was there or watching. He walked straight up to her, clasped her face in his hands and kissed her gently on the lips. "I'll get him back," he paused for a moment looking into her eyes "for you." She kissed him back.
Carrie looked on, she was speechless.
Eric walked off to prepare some food for René. She felt as if she was almost done catching her breath and could relax when Carrie approached her.
"I'm glad your ok René. I was surprised when Richard said he sent you to follow Benjamin." René broke a small smile at her. She knew Carrie wasn't the biggest fan of Ben after their last conversation. But she respected her very much and realized she might be the closest friend she had now in the camp.
"Richard sent me because he knows my loyalty. He trusted me most to do it, since Ben trusted me to follow John when we broke camp a few days ago." She wasn't sure how Carrie would react to knowing that's where she went.
"Richard trusts you, I know that." Carrie looked around to see if they were alone. "But, um, what's going on with Eric?" She smiled.
René blushed a bit. "Let's walk." She grabbed Carrie's arm and wandered to the outskirts of camp. "I don't even know how to start Carrie. We aren't, together. I like him. But my heart," she struggled to find the right words.
"Belongs to someone else right now. I understand." Carrie said.
"He's a great guy, young, strong, but I'm afraid of anything permanent. I just wish I could tell Ben and let him make the choice for me. Which is not like me. I'm trying to move on and do what's best for me." René sat on the ground. "I don't mean to act like a confused teenager. It was never my intent to have feelings like this."
"It's never anyone's intent René." Carrie tried to help her understand. "Eric knows how feel right?"
"I told him exactly how I felt. He knows my feelings. But," she blushed and tried to turn away from Carrie.
"You didn't?" Carrie exclaimed.
René nodded. "It was amazing." The girls laughed together but Carrie seemed distracted by something at the same time she was trying to help René.
They watched as the sun set over the hills.
"So, what have I missed since leaving for my excursion? Richard was looking for you before he sent me after Ben." René inquired.
Carrie's eyes welled with tears. "Carrie, what's wrong?" René felt concerned. Carrie shook her head, "I can't."
René rubbed her back. "Things with you and Richard are ok aren't they?" Carrie looked at René searching for how to share her secret.

Day 91 - NIGHT
Jo led the survivors towards the voices ahead of them. They broke through the tree line to discover Sayid angrily confronting Locke by the wreckage of the Oceanic 815 cockpit. Jo spotted Hurley, Jin, Bernard and - making her heart skip a beat - Desmond.
"Let's break here," she announced to the group. "Rest up for a bit."
She took a long swig from her water bottle, then sauntered over to Desmond. The distressed look on his face told her everything she needed to know: Charlie had not survived. Jo broke into tears and Desmond wrapped his arms around her, holding her close and rocking her gently.
"Charlie's dead," Desmond murmured as his own tears mingled with Jo's hair.
Jo tried her damnest to stay strong in front of Desmond, but inwardly she felt this island was destroying her. Everything was going so very, very wrong.
"You have to tell Claire," she said softly, still clinging to him. "And Zoe - where is she?"
"Zoe is nearby, but she wanted to be left alone." Jo's heart broke for her friend, and for her unborn baby that would never know Charlie.
After a few stolen moments together Jo broke away from Desmond and pushed him gently towards Claire, but Hurley intercepted him and wanted to do the job for him.
Rousseau arrived on the scene, pulling Ben behind her with that damned rope contraption. Jo moved towards him but was distracted by Jack's sudden appearance. He lunged at Locke and began to beat him, somehow wrestling his gun away. He held the gun to Locke's head and actually pulled the trigger - but nothing happened. The survivors looked on in stunned disbelief while Sawyer and Sayid pulled Jack off Locke.
Locke slowly got up. "All I did, all I have ever done, has been in the best interest of all of us," he explained.
"Are you insane?" Jack screamed. Jo grabbed for Jack's arm and struggled to hold him back tightly. Sawyer and Sayid flanked him on either side to make sure he didn't jump Locke again. "Jack, don't!" Jo advised. "Let him speak."
Locke continued. "I'm going to the Barracks. The Others abandoned them. Its the only place on the Island with any form of security right now, it'll have to do until I can think of something else. Until then, if you wanna live, you need to come with me."
Jo and Jack looked on, speechless, as two distinct sides began to form among the survivors.
Ben asked Jack for permission to join Locke's group. "Will you be joining me, Jo?" he called across the gulf to her. Jo glanced behind her to see what Desmond's decision would be. He appeared to be firmly fixed in Jack's camp. She shook her head.
"No, Ben. I'm staying with Jack." What Ben didn't realize was that she was staying on Jack's side only because Desmond was; Jack had revealed a seriously crazy side of his personality in the past few days, and she was absolutely certain his reckless leadership was going to lead them all into danger. But she felt safe with Desmond, and that was enough for her to choose a side.
Ben nodded his understanding. "I see. Well, best of luck to you then."
Rain began to fall as Locke led his group away, back towards the Barracks. Jo hoped she hadn't made the biggest mistake of her life.

Day 91 - Night
Mars wiped her tears when she heard the news that Charlie is dead. Sun have told her what he has done so that Jack could make contact with the outside world.
Locke declared. "I'm going to the Barracks. The Others abandoned them. Its the only place on the Island with any form of security right now, it'll have to do until I can think of something else. Until then, if you wanna live, you need to come with me."
Mars walked towards Locke. She needs to tell him about Walt and what he said. Mars glanced at Jack's group. They might be the ones that are going to be rescued, the ones that would experience freedom once they arrived back home, the ones that will see their loved ones.
Mars sighed, thinking about what would happen if she got off this island. She didn't really know why she chose to follow Locke in the first place. She would love to get off this island (if Walt's warning was wrong), but nothing much is waiting for her back home.
Except Martin.
And work.
Mars followed Locke to the Barracks along with Claire, Sawyer, Hurley, and the others - rain began to pour down on them.
"John?" Mars walked faster towards Locke.
"Hm?" Locke responded simply.
"Why did you kill Naomi?"
"Because she's not the person she said she was." Locke quipped. "Charlie knew something was wrong when he flicked the switch somewhere down below, and I think making that call is a very, very wrong thing to do."
Mars paused.
"What happened to you?" Locke asked. "You were missing for quite some time."
"I was shot to death by Carrie," Mars looked over her shoulders to Ben "He told her to do it."
Ben glared at her.
"I didn't know what happened next, but I was unconscious. I didn't remember anything. Earlier today I regained composure and you know what I saw?" Mars asked.
"What?"
"Walt." Mars said.
Locke looked at her, disbelieved. "You serious?"
Mars nodded. "He told me that those people on the boat are not who they say they were. He also told me to stop Jack from contacting the phone. Apparently, I was too late."
Locke paused. "But there's still hope." He looked at her.
Mars smiled.

Day 91 night
"Carrie, I'm certainly one to know, you shouldn't hold it in." René tried to get Carrie to open up to her. Carrie started to cry, she tried to wipe the tears from her cheeks.
"I don't want to leave him." She pleaded, but not to René, to something bigger.
"Why would you have to leave Richard? I don't understand? You two are in love," Carrie cut her off. "I'm pregnant." René wanted to be elated for her, but she couldn't. She knew that's why Carrie would have to leave. If she didn't, she'd be dead in just a few months.
"My God Carrie, I-I don't know what to say." René hugged her tight while she wept. René brushed Carrie's hair from her face. "Richard will do whatever he can to make sure your safe."
"I know he will." Carrie said. They sat for a little while longer before heading back to camp to eat something and join the others.
Eric greeted René with her favorite fruit, lilikoi. René looked at him very puzzled. "How did you know?"
"I can't give away all my secrets." He smiled back. She looked over his shoulder and saw Emma sitting with Cindy giggling. "Secrets." René giggled as she rolled her eyes.
They sat around the fire that evening talking about plans to get to the Temple and preparing for the intruders to the island. René's thoughts drifted off to Ben. She worried about him. Eric could see the strain in her face as she dwelled on him. "Hey?" he whispered at her. She looked up at him.
"That line on your forehead is too crinkled. Stop thinking so hard." He jabbed her in the ribs. She politely smiled at him and concentrated on Richard again. When they finished everyone began getting ready to retire for the night. Eric walked with René.
"Hey, you ok?" He asked
"I just left him there Eric, in the hands of that monster." René was becoming angry.
"I told you I'd get him back. Even it means," René interrupted him, "Don't Eric. I can't choose," she paused. "Don't. My mind is spinning as it is trying to figure this all out."
Eric sighed, took hold of her hand in his. "Being with you has been the best thing that has happened to me since coming here. I will take whatever you are willing to give me."
René hugged him, kissed him on the cheek and went into her tent. He followed her moments later. "Eric I can't," He placed his finger over her lips. "Sshhh. Just sleep." He snuggled down next to her and held her close as she cried herself to sleep.

Day 92
Zoe was still in the looking glass station, sat outside the very door that held her lover's body. Desmond had left for shore, and had tried to drag her away with him, but a rather uncomfortable spat led to Desmond leaving her and heading back to the beach with the burden of telling everyone of the horrors that had accured down here. Zoe hugged her knees, she face still damp from her tears, and she stared lifelessly across the Looking Glass station. She couldn't believe what had happened, she refused to. It just wasn't right. This wasn't meant to happen. She blamed herself, and with every minute that she did, she felt like another ton of bricks had been added to her shoulder. Charlie was dead, and it was all her fault.
A few days earlier
Day 90
Zoe and Jo discussed at great lengths what they had to do about Naomi, Desmond, Charlie and Sayid. As no plans had been told to them yet by Jack with all the arguments over trust with Juliet, the plans they had made had been very vague, until Jack had called everyone urgently to listen to what he had to say.
Jack urged everyone to follow him, and with many ignored questions, everyone followed him to the medow. Zoe exchanged curious glances with Jo, both eager to know what was going on. They all came to a sudden halt and Jack begins his speech about rescue, the satalite phone and the knowledge obtained from Juliet and what they were going to do about it. Early that day, Zoe had only just discovered, one of the Others, Alex's boyfriend, had made his way across the ocean in his self made raft-boat to warn them all that the Others were coming tonight to take all the women for the purpose of finding out if they were pregnant or not. Zoe couldn't fight back the shiver down her spine. Not this all over again. Being kidnapped was getting quite boring now. As she had heard the news about the Others, she subconciously tuned out of what Jack was telling them, however, a sudden explosion brough her back to reality. Dynamite had been activated not far off from where they were all standing, and the french woman, Rousseau emerged from the jungle.
This is where Jack announced that he and Rousseau had being collecting dynamite together, and revealed their plan to stop the Others coming to attack them and kidnap them. How three tents would be marked and three men would stay to activate them once the Others arrived to attack, meanwhile, Rousseau would lead everyone else to the radio tower so they could turn off Rousseau's message for help and Naomi could call her boat to get everyone rescued. Zoe exchanged a nervous glance with Jo, and she opened her mouth to speak, but Jo grabbed her shoulder firmly, and shook her head.
"Not yet." She whispered as Juliet piped in that Naomi's phone wouldn't work. The signal was being jammed, just as Zoe had told Jo. That the station was flooded and someone would have to swim down there and flick the switch. To Zoe's suprise, Jack volunteered himself, not Charlie. Sayid claimed after Juliet admitted she had no idea where this station was that he had a map that led to the station.
After more details of the plan became finalised, they all headed back to the beach camp, Zoe's nerves made her feel jittery and she was anxious to talk to Jo in private, but Jo was busy taslking to Jack for the moment, Zoe went to see Charlie instead, but as he left Desmond after their conversation that Zoe was too out of earshot to hear, he headed towards Claire's tent. She sighed, feeling exhausted, she sat down to rest, the baby bump had grown a little more, and with the heat of the sun beating down on her, she grew ever more drowsy, and before she knew it, she fell asleep.
Zoe was awoken urgently by Jo's urgent prods, and her frantic whisper of Charlie's plans. They both quickly agreed what needed to be done. Zoe's packed her backpack with essential items she thought she might need for the trip while Jo explained her plan of going to the raido tower to try and sabbotage Jack's, Rousseau's and Naomi's plan to get in contact with Widmore's boat. They hugged each other tightly, the baby pushed into Zoe's bladder and she had to run to pee after her and Jo's brief goodbye before she headed to find Charlie walking away from Jack.
"Charlie! I'm coming with you." She told him.
"Coming with me where?" He asked her cautiously.
"To that underwater station. I want to help." She told her.
"I'm not sure of that's a good idea..." He voiced his concerns.
"Charlie, you are not going to change my mind on this one. I'm coming, and that is that." Zoe told him stubbornly.
"What about your baby?" Charlie asked.
"He'll be fine." Zoe smiled.
"He?" Charlie asked with a raised eyebrow.
"I think you guessed right, he feels like a he. Now go get what you need. I'll meet you and Desmond at Karl's boat." Zoe instructed.
"Hey, who made you boss?" Charlie teased, trying to be humorus, but the concern and anxiety on his face remained, making his tone sound rather odd. Zoe didn't answer, and smiled weakly, but with a serious expression in her eyes before she turned to head for Karl's boat.
When Zoe arrived at the boat, Desmond was already there with his things, checking the boat over, double checking it was suitable for his mission. He stopped what he was doing when he looked up to see Zoe, he frowned slightly, afterall, she wasn't in his vision, which could mean no Penny if she was determined to come.
"Zoe....what are you doing here?" He asked, his tone giving away his intentions slightly.
"I'm coming with you." Zoe replied.
"I'm not sure that is a good idea." Desmond told her, folding his arms disapprovingly. "I mean, the baby-"
"Shut up about the bloody baby, you aren't the father! I'll make the decisions where he is concerned. I know he'll be alright." Zoe interrupted. Shocked by the fury in her voice, Desmond said nothing more, and moments later, Charlie joined them. They all prepared to set out in the boat when Huley came running over.
"Hey, guys, let me come with you!" He asked of them, but Charlie stopped him and went to console with him, giving him a list of significant reasons why he couldn't come. Hurley looked hurt by his words, but their friendship obviously remained when Charlie gave hima hug. Zoe smiled and went over to hug him too, but she knew at the back of her mind why Charlie was really hugging him. Because he thought it would be the last time he'd see him, which wouldn't be the case. Not if she could help it anyway.
As they sailed across the ocean, Desmond using the cable to guide them to the station, Zoe rested, and fell asleep, although, this only lasted a few minutes, the tides were making her feel woosy and sick, so she kept her eyes closed, hoping this would help...but it didn't. Nonetheless, Charlie and Desmond thought she was asleep, allowing them to talk as if she wasn't there.
Zoe listens intently as Charlie requests Desmond to look after something for him. A list. A list of the five greatest things he has ever done in his life. He asks of him to give it to Claire. Desmond promises, but tells Charlie he doesn't have to do this. That he is a great swimmer, and he'll take his place. That he shouldn't risk his life, and he'll make it back without drowning, and for Charlie to stay on the boat.
Zoe clenched her jaw as she waited for Charlie's response, and he agrees. As she feels the boat being anchored, and Desmond standing up, she hears and almighty whack and then a huge splash in the water. Her eyelids opend in a flash and she sat up, looking around frantically. Desmond had been knocked unconcious, and seeing the ore by his side, she quickly realises that Charlie had knocked him out and dived in himself. Zoe cried out in terror as she noticed one of Charlie's shoes float to the surface. She grabbed it out of the water and dumped it in the boat and dived in after him, ignoring the cold that burned her skin.

René sat in a large boardroom. The windows blinds were partially open to let in some light. The rays cut across the room and shone on René's hair highlighting her various brunette colors complimenting her ivory skin. Richard handed her a file. She slid it in front of her, slowly opened it and began to read various pieces.
"That's everything we knew. I'm sorry I misspoke to you earlier." He said.
"You mean lied." René said without skipping a beat without removing her eyes from the material in front of her.
"Yes."
She fingered through various documents. "So, everything about his childhood was a lie? Everything he told me about his work, friends,"
Richard sat down next to her as she continued to flip through everything. She pulled out a picture and slid it Richard. "Who is that man Shannon's with? I've never seen him before."
"His name is Charles Widmore. He's the man your husband worked for. He gathered various information in setting up accounts under various pseudonyms."
René closed the file and handed it back to Richard. "I can't." She breathed heavy and shook her head. "Everything was a lie." The irritation could be heard in her voice now.
Richard put his hand on her shoulder and gave it a friendly squeeze. "I'm sure it wasn't all a lie."
"So, what your telling me is, is that your recruitment of me has nothing to do with this. It's all happenstance? I'm only seeing this because that's how you got my attention. By using my husband, to lure me.
Richard nodded. "Yes, it is."
René smiled. "I like you, you're honest."
Just then there was a knock on the door. Eric walked into the room. "Mr. Alpert, were on a tight schedule." He said as he pointed to his watch.
"Let's get you packed then?" Richard asked René as he stood up from the table.
"No time like the present." She stood up, grabbed her purse and followed Richard out. "Thank you." She smiled at Eric as he held the door open for her and they all left.

Day 92
Mars crouched under a tree for shelter as Locke stands in the rain. Hurley approached him.
"Dude. What's wrong with you. You're gonna get struck by lightning." he shouted.
"The storm's about to pass, Hugo." Locke said, his eyes closed.
"Its a frigging monsoon, we gotta... "
Mars watched as the rain stopped suddenly. The crowd gasped in amazement. Mars stood up and dusted off her bloody T-shirt.
"Let's go." Locke said as he walked.
"Why are you going East? Thought you said the Barracks were due South. " Sawyer interrupted.
"Because, James, we have to make a little detour first. " Locke calmly said.
"Detour to what?"
"There's a cabin I have to go to."
Mars rolled her eyes. The island is under possible danger, and we're running out of time. What the heck is Locke trying to find in some random cabin anyway?
"You mind telling us who you're getting your orders from, Colonel Kurtz?" Sawyer continued
"I got 'em from Walt." Locke said.
Mars' jaw dropped.

Day 92
René could feel her arm being stroked. It felt nice after the comfortable sleep she had that night. She opened her eyes when it stopped. She tried to focus and rubbed the morning grime from her eyes. Without rolling over she whispered to Eric. "Sleep ok?"
"Mhm." He said.
René sat up and stretched her arms upward and rolled her head around getting a kink out of her neck. Eric leaned towards her and kissed her shoulder. René closed her eyes and pushed her head against his as if to confirm it was ok to show affection. She turned all the way around and saw clear blue eyes starring back at her. The scarred lips and short brown hair with flicks of gray on the sides. He grazed his hand down her arm again. "Are you going to help me?" Ben whispered.
René woke up in a cold sweat. She brazenly whipped her arm to the side feeling for Eric's body but he wasn't there. It had been a couple of weeks since she had a dream as real and intense as this. Her hands shook. She got up and changed her clothes and left the tent.
Alot of people were awake and packing their things for the move inward to the Temple. Eric had already finished and was heading towards René to help her take the tent down. She looked across the other side of camp and could hear Zack and Emma bickering about something. Sibling rivalrey, good times. She thought to herself. Eric said good morning and started stripping the tent before René could. "You ok, look a bit stunned?" He asked while working.
"Yeah, dream knocked me out of place this morning." She didn't want to give details but knew Eric would ask.
"Bad one?"
"No," she shook her head. To her, it wasn't waking up to Ben that was bad, it was the subject it pertained to that scarred her. "Just threw me is all." They finished tieing up her things. She sat for a minute and Eric joined her of course. "Can I ask you something Eric?"
"What is it?" he replied.
"How long have you been here, on the island?" René inquired. "I just remembered the other day, when Richard had come to recruit me. You couldn't have been more than twenty." Eric laughed and smiled.
"Yea, something like that." He pulled grass out from the terrain and was flicking it into the wind. "I came here when I was about Emma's age I guess. My mom died when she got pregnant again though. Never knew my father. My mom said he died on the mainland. That's why she brought me. Why?"
"Just curious. No reason really. Sometimes things, they just pop into your head ya know?" Eric shook his head in agreement.
René got up and signaled they should help Cindy out packing up her and the kids. The spent the rest of the morning making small talk and playing with the kids.

Day 92
Carrie finished packing up her belongings, her mind heavy with thoughts, about Richard, about the baby, about René. She hoisted her pack onto her shoulder, when Richard came up to her.
"You okay?" He asked, concerned. "You look lost in thought."
"Yeah, I'm fine," Carrie replied, trying at a weak smile. "It's just everything that's been going on."
"C'mon, let's get moving." Richard took her hand and led the group towards the Temple. They'd been walking for some time, Carrie and Richard both silent as they stayed in their own thoughts, when Richard broke the silence. "You can call him Michael if you want," he said. "After Kelso."
Carrie looked up at Richard, her eyebrows raised. "Him? I think you'll find it's a her."
"You sure about that?" Richard laughed.
Carrie nodded. "Maternal instinct. Even though my mum thought I was a boy ... still, I can tell it's a girl. I just know."
"Okay," Richard agreed, smiling. "If it's a boy, you can call it Michael."
Carrie shook her head. "No, I don't like the idea of naming babies after other people. It gets confusing. What do you wanna call it?"
"For a boy..." Richard thought for a moment. "Callum."
"I like it, but it's too similar to my name," Carrie said. "What about Seth?"
"Yeah, I like Seth," Richard agreed. "For a girl, Lynette. I have always loved that name."
"Lynette Alpert ... yeah, that works. I like it," Carrie smiled.
She rested her head on his shoulder as he watched her, glad she was smiling. Although he was wary of the people on the boat, Richard knew that if there was a chance they could get Carrie off the Island, they had to take it. He loved her, and even though he would do anything to keep her with him, putting her life in danger was one thing he wouldn't do.
"Will you visit me?" Carrie asked suddenly. "Once I go?"
"I promise I'll try," Richard replied. "It's unlikely though, I can only leave for important things. I'm not sure I'll be allowed. But I promise you Carrie, I will do my best to see you. It may only be once or twice, though. But like I said, it's very improbable."
"Can I come back?"
Richard paused. "No," he said sadly. "No, you have to stay there, to look after the child."
"Is that because the Island won't let me come back, or because you won't, Richard?"
"Carrie, listen to me." Richard looked at her seriously. "You have to promise me, promise you'll never to bring our child to the Island. It's too dangerous."
"I won't," Carrie replied, looking back at him just as seriously. "I promise."
