Five and half years ago.
Richard knocked on a plain white door. René looked around the well manicured neighborhood. She felt a bit nervous as people looked her over when they walked by. The door opened and a man the same height as her opened the door. He was wearing gold round rimmed glasses holding a book. His hair was short and well kept and appeared somewhat reserved and cautious by his stance in the doorway. He wore a light pink button down shirt and khakis. She noticed the top buttons were undone just enough to show a bit of chest hair.
"Ben, this is René. René, this is Ben, our "leader" you could say of our community." René held her hand out and shook Ben's hand firmly. "Pleasure to meet you René. Please, come in." René noticed how soothing a voice he had. Commanding at the same time she thought. He stood off to the side so her and Richard could enter.
They gathered in the living room and Ben asked if she wanted a refreshment. She tried to decline, "I don't want be a bother." Ben cut her off. "Oh it's no bother. Besides, if you don't get some fluids into you you'll be dealing with a headache of a nefarious nature. Sorry, but the drugs we use for the trip in to the Island are a bit harsh"
"Then I better say yes." She smiled as Ben walked into the kitchen. Ben yelled out to René, "Feel free to peruse the books. We have an excellent book club and I'm sure your items won't be fully unpacked yet?" René wandered to the far end of the living room where there was a wall full of books. "Richard, could you help me please." Ben asked.
Richard excused himself from René and went to help Ben serve up the drinks. What René heard next she was sure was not intended.
"Why did you bring her straight here Richard? I thought we agreed to wait." Ben said calmly, but forcefully in a low tone.
"Well Ben, then you need to take that up with Jacob." Richard retorted.
"Well Richard, I would if he would let me." Ben didn't look at Richard, he continued to pour out the drinks. "He's the one that wanted to bring her here, not me."
René continued to flip through some various books on Ben's shelf pretending not to hear anything that was said. Ben brought a tray over that had three glasses filled with lemonade. "Please." Ben pointed to the glasses to let René choose first. For a man who was unsure about her presence there he certainly was courteous. She picked one up and sipped. "Wow." she said as her eyes lit up.
"Too bitter?" Ben asked. "I tried not to pick the lemons too early."
"No, it's perfect, amazing really. I'm impressed." She said.
Ben nodded, "Thank you." As they began to sit a young girl with long bushy hair and very fair complexion came running through the door. She slammed it hard behind her. "Alexandra!" Ben exclaimed at the young girl. She look over doe eyed completely embarrassed not realizing other people were there. She regained composure and then shouted, "I hate him, Karl's a big jerk!" She then stormed off down the hallway and slammed the door to what was presumably her room.
Ben looked a bit embarrassed himself from the outburst. "I apologize for that." he said.
"Karl is another boy here. He and Alex are around the same age." Richard said. René nodded her head with understanding.
"Would you like me to go talk to her?" René looked at Ben. "Girl to girl?" She winked. No better time to make a good impression than now she figured. Ben spoke up, "Be my guest, because she won't listen to me lately."
René set her drink down and walked down the hallway. She took acute observation to all the various items that hung on the walls. Photographs of Alex over the years, paintings, African art forms. She got to Alex's door and lightly knocked. She could feel the stares of Richard and Ben on her. "Alex, can I come in?" René said softly.
"Go away!" Alex yelled back through the door.
René sat down outside her door. Ben looked at her very intently trying to figure her out.
"You know Alex, I knew this boy a long time ago. His name was Shannon."
"That's a stupid name for a boy." She said tartly.
René laughed and smiled at the fresh memory of first meeting her husband. "I thought that too when I first met him."
"Did you tell him you thought it was stupid?" René could hear Alex move across her room and sit down on the other side of the door.
"I told him I thought it was funny. I also know that sometimes, as much as he liked me and I liked him, we weren't always the nicest to each other. Sometimes he would get very mad at me for being so bold and brazen about things."
"Like what?" Alex asked.
"I don't know, politics, religion, my art mostly. Freedoms to have an opinion that not everyone always agreed with. Sometimes I think it was too complicated to put into words. Sometimes all you have are your feelings."
"Karl gets mad at me for stupid reasons too." There was a long pause. Alex unlatched her door and slowly opened it enough to see just her face. "You're new here huh?" René nodded and smiled. "Yup, sure am." Alex opened the door fully then held out her hand. "HI, I'm Alex."
René took her hand. "Alex, it's very nice to meet you. My name is René." Alex smiled, got up, walked down the hall and back out the front door.
Ben looked down the hall at René with amazement and deep contemplation. "Huh." He said as Richard looked on and smiled. René smiled back at him, proving to him just how much he would need her there.

December 2007
Carrie sat in the living room, with Lynette on her knee. "Play sit still!" Lynette said.
"Okay," Carrie agreed, positioning Lynette more comfortably on her knee. "Now, Lynny, Grandad told me you've been very naughty- sit still!" She started wobbling her knees up and down as was customary in the game they'd made up, making Lynette wobble about. "Lynny, sit still when I'm talking to you!" She carefully and slowly mimed Lynette falling on the floor, holding her. "Now look what's happened, you've fallen!"
Lynette lay on the floor laughing as there was a knock at the door and Lorlai went to answer it. There were voices at the door, before Lorlai poked her head round the living room door. "Carrie, there's someone here to see you," she said, before moving off back into the kitchen.
Carrie stood up to go to the door, but Lynette reached her arms up. "Mummy, pick me up!" She said.
"In a minute, Honey, Mummy has to speak to someone first," Carrie said, going to see who was calling for her.
She was surprised to see Locke on the porch, in a wheelchair. In the distance, by a car, stood a tall, thin black man who Carrie didn't recognise but seemed to be with Locke. "John!" She said in surprise.
"Hello, Carrie," Locke smiled. "Long time, no see."
"John, what ... what are you doing here?" Carrie frowned. "How did you get off the Island?"
"It's a long story," Locke said. "May I come in?"
"Sure." Carrie stepped aside to allow Locke to wheel himself in.
A few minutes later, Carrie and Locke were in the living room, Carrie sitting on the arm of the sofa, Locke having just explained how he'd come to leave the Island, including the time shifts.
"During one of the shifts," Locke was explaining, "I got shot by Ethan, but next shift Richard wandered out of the jungle to heal me." He smiled slightly, knowingly, as Carrie's attention shot up at the mention of Richard's name.
"Is he okay?" Carrie asked with concern.
"He's fine," Locke replied. "He told me to get my people back to the Island."
"Did he say anything else? About me?" Carrie asked him urgently, in need of some sort of recognition that Richard was still thinking of her.
"He did, actually," Locke said, "he told me to tell you he loves you."
Carrie smiled, relieved. Although she knew Richard loved her, she was glad to know for certain he was still thinking about her.
"But the important thing is, Carrie," Locke said, leaning forwards. "He also told me not to bring you back."
Carrie frowned. "Did he say why?"
"No, but I can guess," he replied. "For two reasons. First, he thinks you're safer here. Second, he wants to keep you and your daughter together." Locke looked over at Lynette, who was outside now, chasing Destiny around. "She's beautiful, by the way. What did you call her?"
"Lynette," Carrie replied. "Richard chose it."
Locke nodded and smiled. "Beautiful name for a beautiful girl," he said. "Richard would be proud." He looked back at Carrie, more seriously. "You have to promise, Carrie, not to go back to the Island."
"Okay," Carrie sighed. "I promise."
As Locke left a few minutes later, Lynette came back in. Carrie picked her up and embraced her. As much as she loved her, and even though she'd promised Locke, and essentially Richard, she wouldn't go back, her desire to return had only got bigger.

Day 92
Mars has been walking for a few hours, wondering where the team is actually heading for. Mars learned that Locke has been left for dead by Ben, who shot him. 'How ironic', Mars thought.
Mars was about to ask Locke some question when Sawyer attacked Ben, beating him violently.
"James! Don't!" Locke yelled
Sawyer stopped and glanced at Locke, questioning. "Don't what! Anyone wanna tell me why we're keeping this guy alive?"
"We're keeping him alive because he's been on this Island a lot longer than any of us. Because he has information we need. And because apart from his mouth, he's completely harmless." Locke explained.
"His mouth put that hole in your gut?" Sawyer shot back.
"OK, James. Let's execute him, right here right now, in front of his daughter."
Sawyer backed down and approached Locke.
"It's only a matter of time before he gets us, Johnny, and I bet he's already figured out how he's gonna do it." he handed Locke the rope linked to Ben's wrists. "So you walk him."
Sawyer picked up his rifle and walked away. Locke approached Mars.
"Please heal him." He said
"Why should I?" Mars asked. "He's the one who ordered Carrie that pregnant bitch to kill me." she shouted, making the rest of the team to look at her. Ben looked at her in shock.
A rather loud rustling noise was heard a few moments later.
"What's that?" Karl asked.
"Look!" Hurley yelled "Down there!"
Mars and the rest of team walked to the edge of the cliff and looked downwards at the narrow stream running below. A red-haired woman can be seen floating on the surface, smiling. A parachute is visible stuck on a tree nearby. The woman glanced at Locke.
"Hi." she said.
"Hi yourself." Locke replied coldly.

Day 92
Carrie looked around, confused. Somehow she'd got seperated from the rest of the group, and had wandered around for hours now, not having the faintest clue where she was going. The dense forests stopped her from seeing which way was north, east, south or west, so she had no idea if she was going towards the group or away from them.
She sat down on a rock, trying to recouperate from her search. She looked around, hoping to recognise some area of where she was, but it was entirely strange to her. She gently put her hand on her stomach, and leant back against a tree. She wondered what she was supposed to do once she left the Island. She'd integrated herself so much into life on the Island, with Richard, that she couldn't really picture herself living anywhere else. The outside world was so different, Carrie wasn't sure she'd fit in there.
Her thoughts were interrupted by a rustling in the bushes. She stood up and put her hand on her gun readily, watching the bushes.

Mars walked out of the bush, surprised to find Carrie in front of her - pointing her gun at her.
"What the heck are you doing here?" Mars barked.
Carrie looked to a nearby tree, avoiding Mars' gaze.
"You haven't answered my question, Carrie." Mars inched closer. "Why are you here?"
"Look, Mars, I know you're still mad about what I've done, but please let me explain--" Carrie stammered.
"Why - are - you - here, Carrie?" Mars said slowly, her hands in front of her, ready to attack anytime.
"I.." Carrie gulped. "got lost."
Mars raised an eyebrow. "Yeah, right."
"What are you doing here, Mars?" Carrie asked back.
"There's this woman named Charlotte. She parachuted into the island. She said she's part of a rescue team, but I think she's lying." Mars explained "Locke and the rest of the team are still with her."
"Wait? Someone parachuted into the island?" Carrie said.
"And why are you so concerned?" Mars shot back.
Carrie froze.
"We'll take care of her once we reached the Barracks."
Mars looked over her shoulder when she realized that someone is walking towards her. She glanced at Carrie.
"What?" she asked.
Mars walked closer towards her and knocked her head with her fist, kinocking her unconscious. Mars watched as Locke and the rest of the team walked out of the bush.
"What do you have there?" Locke asked.
"Tie 'er up." Mars said.

As the group stopped for a rest, Richard looked around, wondering where Carrie had gone. He'd thought she'd gone to speak to René, but she was alone with Eric. After looking around several times, and checking the nearby area, Richard realised she'd disappeared. People were just packing up to get moving again when Richard said, "wait, everyone, hold it. Has anyone seen Carrie?"
People looked around, but Richard's question was only met with murmers that confirmed she was gone. Panic started to rise up in Richard's stomach. The last thing he wanted was for Carrie to disappear, especially not while pregnant and with the survivors wandering about. "Okay," he said, making a decision. "Okay, I'm gonna double back and see if I can find a trail. René, you're in charge until I get back." He quickly instructed her privately on how to get to the Temple, before picking up Carrie's belongings, which he'd been carrying, and setting off back down the trail.
Carrie opened her eyes slowly, and felt a throbbing pain on her head. Another bruise was no doubt forming - she still had an obvious bruise on the back of her head from where Richard had hit her. Her eyes slid back into focus, and she realised she was in her and Richard's old house. Feeling came back into her body, and she realised she was tied up on a chair. She heard footsteps, and Mars emerged from the bathroom. Carrie felt partially relieved to see a familiar face, and partly scared because she knew Mars was still angry at her.
"Mars..." Carrie said, wondering what she wanted to say.
"John told me to look after you," Mars replied, rather coldly. "Why he wants me to, I don't know."
"He lived with us for a while," Carrie reminded her, "he knows me." She bit her lip to prevent herself from laughing, as she remembered when Richard had first spoken to her about Locke, and she'd said he was like a Zen Buddha. "Who's Charlotte?" She asked, suddenly remembering what Mars had said before.
Mars shook her head. "John said not to tell you."
Carrie frowned, but didn't question Locke's motives. He always had been a strange one. "Is she going to rescue you?"
"That's what she says," Mars replied, "but I don't believe her. We split into two groups - the ones that wanted to try at rescue went with Jack, and the rest of us went with John."
"Mars..." Carrie looked at her half-sister pleadingly. "If Charlotte really is here to rescue you, you need to help me. I have to get off this Island too."
"Why?" Mars frowned.
They were interrupted suddenly by the door being forced open. Carrie and Mars both looked over, both expecting Locke, both surprised to see who it was.
"Richard!" Carrie exclaimed, relieved to see him.
Richard looked at Mars. "Let her go, Mars," he said calmly.
"But John said-" Mars began, but Richard cut across her.
"Mars. Please. Let her go."
Mars hesitated, then walked over to Carrie and untied her from the chair. As soon as she was free, she shot up and embraced Richard tightly. He hugged her back, relieved she was okay.
"You didn't answer my question, Carrie," Mars interrupted. "Why do you want to leave the Island too?"
"Doesn't matter," Carrie shook her head as Richard released her. She picked up her bag, which Richard had brought with him and left on the floor, and retreived a red file. "What does matter is this." She pulled out the paper enclosing proof of the two women's relation, and handed it to Mars. "It's time you knew the truth," she said.

"Richard!" Mars said just before Richard leaves the house. Richard stopped and looked at her.
"We need to talk." Mars said. "Alone."
Richard frowned. "We have to go, Mars. We don't have much time."
"Please?" Mars pleaded.
Richard sighed and followed Mars to a nearby room, leaving Carrie behind. Richard leaned against the wooden door.
“What is it?” Richard asked.
“Kelso told me to say to you to watch over Carrie.” Mars explained. “I saw him ages ago – several hours after he’s dead. In the middle of the night. He told me to pass a message to you and Carrie.”
Richard nodded. “I’ll take care of her.” He said “By the way, have you ever seen him since?”
Mars shook her head. “No.” she paused “But you know what? When I was unconscious after Carrie shot me, I had this dream. In it, Kelso said to me to be careful.”
Richard looked away, trying to hide his astonishment.
“Well, you better be.” He said whilst opening the door and walked away.
Mars sat on the floor, her back pressed against the wall. She glanced at the red file in front of her. She hesitated and put her hand on the cover. Slowly, she opened the file. There are a lot of things inside the file – photographs, documents, newspaper articles and even some maps. She looked at a family photograph and tossed it across the room because she didn’t know who they are.
Then, something caught Mars’ eyes.
Mars pulled out a newspaper article from the pile of papers. It was from The Daily Telegraph, a local newspaper, a day after the power station incident. Mars glanced at the title of the article. ‘Fifteen-year-old survives deadly power station accident.’ There are a lot of underlined words on the article, most of them involving Mars and how she ‘was found alive near the reactors underneath the station’ and how ‘her colleague didn’t make it.’
Mars couldn’t help but wonder how Carrie got access to such file. She browsed through the file and saw an adoption certificate. Mars was utterly shocked when she found out that Stephen and Joyce McTavish are not her biological parents. Mars scanned through the papers in front of her in panic, and saw a piece of paper with her name on the bottom right hand corner of the page. The whole page is filled with names and arrows – almost like a family tree.
Mars scanned through the page and saw an arrow linked from her name to Carrie’s name, and to another name. It turns out that Mars was given up for an adoption because Carrie’s dad and his hew wife were not ready to raise her. Mars looked away from the file – the searing pain of rejection pierced through her like a flaming arrow. And then Mars realized something. She glanced to and from her name and Carrie’s name, and the arrow linking both of them together.
Mars held her breath.

Day 90
Zoe could see in the depths, Charlie's legs dissappear under the Looking Glass Station, and she followed him in his direction. She noticed as she swam deeper and deeper the dharma logo painted onto the side of the station, a rabbit.
Zoe felt pressure on her ears the further she swam down, it had been a long time since she had last been deep diving, a long time since she had properly swam full stop. Her ears felt like they were ready to pop, and now the pressure was pushing on her skull as oxygen was screaming through her brain.
As she swam under the station, she felt the ceiling above her, any trace of Charlie had disappeared now, so she traced the ceiling to help her find an opening that would lead her to him and the switch that needed to be flicked, but her need for breath was becoming increasingly desperate. She feared she would drown as she could find no-where for air when she finally spotted an opening. She kicked harder then she had ever swam before and headed for it, the surfaced just moments away from her lips, and in the tension, anxiety and desperation to suck in sweet oxygen air, she burst out water, almost leaping out of it, a sharp and loud intake of breath echoed throughout the entire station, announcing her pressence.
Zoe treaded water as she took a look at her surroundings, and froze as she saw to her horror, Charlie tied to a chair and two aggressive and furious women standing beside him, staring at her. Charlie's nose and cheek was bleeding, he was soaking wet from his diving trip, and he was staring at her anxiously.
There was a brief pause as everyone stared at each other in mild suprise then the two myterious women held their guns aimed at Zoe. Instintctively, she held her arms in the air, but this made her sink into the water slightly, far enough for her head to bob under the water, so she retracted her arms to help her keep afloat, dispite the guns aimed at her head, she also had the worry of what was underneath her. She was not without the knowledge that these were shark infested waters.
"Swim slowly to the ladder and get out." The blonde woman barked at her. She did so and the blonde woman indicated to the short cut brunette to grab her and tie her up. Before she knew it, Zoe was forced into a chair like Charlie's and bound. They said nothing to each other.
"Who are you?" The blonde woman demanded. Zoe looked to Charlie, who looked at her like he didn't know her and she glanced back at the blonde woman and didn't say anything. This cost her a punch across the jaw.
"Stop!" Charlie shouted. "Don't hurt her. She's pregnant." The blonde responded by punching him again across the face.
"Hey, leave him alone!" Zoe shouted instead, and the blonde turned to her with a look of daggers in her eyes.
"What are you doing here?" She demmanded to know. "How do you know each other?"
"I'm Charlie Pace." Charlie began, and nodded towards Zoe, indicating her, "And that is Zoe. We are here to turn off your jamming equipment. It's in there, next to the flashing yellow light."
"How do you know about that?" The brunette woman asked.
"I know, because I know. Whatever you ladies do to me, I'm going to turn it off." Charlie replied cockily. Zoe eyed him suspiciously. He had his familiar goofy grin on him. She frowned, wishing he would stop baiting them.
"You are, huh?" The blonde replied.
"Most definitely am." Charlie responded confidently, his head held high.
"So what's the code?" The blonde continued to question.
"What?" Charlie responded, slighty confused, Zoe showed the same expression on her face.
"Oh Charlie if you're gonna turn off the jamming equipment you're gonna need the code. And only three people know it. Me, her, and Ben." The blonde explained. Zoe gave Charlie a nervous glance.
"Charlie, don't say anymore-" She interrupted, but he spoke over her.
"Well, guess I won't need the code. Since this entire station's gonna be flooded anyway. I just turn off your little jammer and the helicopters come and rescue all my friends." Charlie responded, with the same confident tone, his grin growing wider by the second.
"But if this station floods, what happens to you?" the Blonde continued to question, her brows furrowed with a curious expression upon her face.
"I die." Charlie replied bluntly, a grin still upon his face. Zoe stared at him horror struck.
"Charlie, don't you dare joke about a thing like that." Zoe whispered in reply with a warning tone.
"What did you just say?" The blonde asked, she couldn't quite catch what Zoe had said, her voice had been too quiet.
"Never you mind!" Zoe replied with frustration. "Don't you think it is about time you gave your buddy Ben a call? I'm sure he would want to know immediately you have one of his pet pregnancy projects in your possesions."
Zoe stood up from where she had been crouched in her own tight little ball of sorrow, and turned to look through the window for a final time, at Charlie's lifeless and limp body floating in the water. Tears pricked again at her now very sore eyes.
"You foolish man." She shook her head, almost angrily. It was an uncessessary death, and she was angry with herself, Desmond and Charlie. She was hurt, sad, depressed and morunful. Soon, Charlie's body would balloon up from his lungs being flooded from water, and that was a memory Zoe would rather not have, so as she stared at him, in her mind she said her goodbyes, and with a face of determination upon her, she raided the lockers in the main docking area she was situated in in the Looking Glass and found a wet suite she could wear as well as breathing apparatus. She changed into them and dived back into the depths of the ocean, towards the shore of the beach, keeping her eyes alert for any dangerous creatures about, despite her eye lids protesting painfully from pain of her hours of weeping.

Day 91 - NIGHT
Jo led the remaining survivors back to the camp, hastened by the sudden torrential rainstorm. Jack and Kate chose to stay behind at the wreckage of the cockpit, for whatever reason. Jo wasn't interested in finding out why; she only wanted to get back to camp as quickly as possible, get into dry clothes and put this horrible night far behind her.
"This is really going to happen," Desmond mused as he walked beside her. "These people - they're really coming for us."
Jo grimaced. "They're not coming for us, Des. Remember Charlie's message? Penny didn't send them. They're here for another reason entirely."
"If you believe that, why did you choose to stay with Jack? Why not go with Locke to the Barracks?" he asked.
Jo sighed, and calmly met his gaze. "Because I made a promise to you," she reasoned. "I promised that I would do everything in my power to reunite you with Penny, and I don't see how I could possibly do that from the Barracks, do you?"
Desmond grinned and tossed his arm around Jo's shoulders. "No, I don't. And I'm grateful for you, Jo."
Jo smiled warmly in return. Inwardly, she was panicking. In the moment that she had chosen to stay on the beach camp she realized that she was beginning to fall in love with Desmond, and that was the real reason for her decision. What this new development would mean for her and Jack was a complete mystery to her at the moment; she would just have to let it unfold.
Day 92
The camp was bustling with activity as the survivors packed their belongings and chattered excitedly about returning home. Jo busied herself with tidying up the camp. She noticed that Aaron's cradle had been overturned, and stooped down to fix it. A glimmer of silver caught her eye and she reached for the source - it was Charlie's Driveshaft ring. Sadness overwhelmed her as she slipped the ring into her pocket. She would give the ring to Zoe when she finally returned from the Looking Glass.
It was mid-afternoon when Juliet arrived at the camp, looking specifically for Desmond. "What do you want Desmond for?" Jo asked suspiciously.
Juliet rolled her eyes. "Jack asked me to get him. He and Sayid think that Desmond can help us get answers from the freighter people."
"Wait, you've met them? They're on the island?" Jo raised her eyebrows in surprise as Juliet nodded.
"They have a helicopter."
"I'm going with you," Jo declared.
"I don't think..." Juliet began to protest, but Jo wasn't having it.
"It doesn't matter what you think," Jo shrugged. "I'm going."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Desmond, Juliet and Jo approached the open clearing and immediately spotted the helicopter.
"Well… look at that." Desmond exclaimed.
Jack rushed towards them and swept Jo up in his arms. "I'm so glad you came," he whispered as he kissed her all over her face.
Jo was a little weirded out. Jack wasn't usually this openly affectionate, and she was still rather unnerved by his attempt to kill Locke the night before. He definitely wasn't acting like himself. "Hi Jack," she responded, somewhat embarrassed to be seen like this in front of Desmond. Then she saw Juliet's astonished expression and began to kiss Jack back, delighting in her reaction.
She and Jack strolled around the clearing, catching up on the day's events while Desmond interrogated Frank Lapidus, the helicopter pilot, about Naomi's photo of him and Penny. The other new arrival, Daniel Faraday, fiddled with some scientific equipment. They all stopped what they were doing and watched with interest when Sayid returned with Charlotte, the third member of their team.
"All right. With Miles gone that gives us room for one more," Lapidus announced. Neither Charlotte nor Daniel expressed any intention of boarding the helicopter.
"I'll go," Jo piped up. Surprised and confused, Jack immediately squashed the idea with a vigorous shake of his head.
"No way, Jo. I can't let you do it."
Jo pulled Jack aside. "Listen, Jack. It's not up to you. If Zoe is right about these people, they're not here to save us. I intend to get their real intentions out of them. I'll be fine, Sayid and Desmond will be with me. I need to do this, Jack. It's in the best interests of all the survivors. If we're putting them on this boat, we need to know what we're getting into."
Jack considered her argument, but still seemed unconvinced. "It's not up to you, Jack, and you know very well that I can be as stubborn as you." He smiled faintly, and relented.
"Please be careful," he pleaded with her. "I love you. If anything happens..."
"Nothing is going to happen," she told him, and rewarded him with a deep, lingering kiss that made the others look away in embarrasment. "Absolutely nothing."
Jack turned to Sayid. "You'll watch her," he demanded. Sayid nodded.
"I promise," Sayid replied smoothly. Jack watched as Desmond took the front of the helicopter with Frank and Jo and Sayid buckled up in the seats behind them. His eyes didn't leave Jo until the helicopter had risen beyond his line of sight.
Day 90
The blonde and the brunette woman disappeared into the comms room, they had started to bicker about what to do with the pair of plane crash survivors. Zoe stared at Charlie, angry at him for what he had said.
"You aren't going to die Charlie. I won't let you." She sniped at him.
"Oh please, I didn't mean it. It was just to shut them up. Or get them arguing. If they think I have no faith in hope of survival, then that will give them fear." Charlie explained.
"I don't care! Don't you ever joke about that in front of me again! Do you hear?" Zoe replied loudly, frustration in her voice. Before Charlie could respond, they were distrubed by the moon pool's surface breaking again, and Desmond's head appearing above the surface.
"Desomond!" Zoe managed to control herself to shout quieter then instincts wanted her too, she and Charlie cried out in syncronisation.
Desmond swam to the ladder to let himself out.
"Charlie! Zoe! Bloody hell! You all right?" He asked concerned and worried.
"We're fine." Zoe assured.
"But not for long if you don't get out of here. You have to hide, Des, hide, hide, there's people in there! Quick, hide hide hide. Go go go! Hide hide hide." Charlie urged, and Desmond acted quickly to do as he was told, just in time as the women realised that Zoe and Charlie weren't talking to each other.
"Who are they talking to?" Zoe heard the blonde say as she looked through the window in her door. Charlie began to hum and then sing, and Zoe, getting his idea, joined in.
"I feel like standing.... stupid people..." Zoe and Charlie sang together as the women entered the room.
"Who were you talking to?" The blonde whom Zoe and Charlie had learnt to be Bonnie demmanded.
"We weren't talking to anyone, we were just singing. You all everybody! You all everybody! You all everybody! You all everybody!" Zoe replied, and Charlie joined in as she began singing again. Bonnie then proceeded to punch Charlie, and then Zoe.
"Shut up!" She spoke dangerously. Charlie stretched his jaw, trying to massage the pain while Zoe had yelped slightly in pain, Bonnie's fingernails had dugged in and caused a signigicant cut, Zoe felt a soft slow flow of blood trickle down her cheek.
"Right, OK, you got it." Charlie promised. Bonnie turned to the brunette.
"Come on." Bonnie instructed and they disappeared back into the comms rooms whilst Charlie and Zoe exchanged significant looks before glancing in the direction of the locker that Desmond had hid himself in.
While Bonnie and the brunette woman were busy in the comms room, Charlie began to genuinely hum a tune. Zoe didn't recognise it, so she sighed and rolled her eyes, occasionally glancing nervously at Desmond's hiding place. Bonnie and the brunette woman joined them after a few minutes, Bonnie quickly growing more and more frustrated by Charlie's humming.
"AH!! I told you to shut up!!!" Bonnie outbursted suddenly.
"You know when you get a tune stuck, in your head? This song just started coming to me, it's almost finished. Just need to find the bridge." Charlie teased and continued to hum his song.
"Get the speargun!" Bonnie ordered from the brunette suddenly.
"What, why?." The brunette responded.
"Cause I want it to hurt." Bonnie declared.
"No, Ben said..." The brunette began to defy her, but Bonnie cut her off.
"You don't wanna get it, I will." Bonnie declaired, and she stood up, and began walking towards Desmond's hiding place. Zoe exchanged a paniced glance with Charlie.
"Bonnie." The brunette sighed, shaking her head.
"Oi, oi oi, no! I'll, I'll shut up, I'll shut up, I'll shut up, I'll shut up." Charlie begged, trying to protect Desmond's hiding place. Bonnie stopped in her tracks as Mikhail suddenly emerged from the moon pool wearing a wet suite.
"Mikhail?" Bonnie spoke in surprise.
"I thought you two were on assignment in Canada?" Mikhail remarked as he pulled off his breathing apparatus.
"He made us promise not to tell anyone." The brunette explained.
"Hello again." Charlie greeted cheekily. Zoe stared at Mikhail murderously.
"Where is the other one?" Mikhail asked igoring the captives.
"What?" Bonnie frowned, confused.
"This idiot swam down from a boat. I was just shooting at their friend. He dove down here." Mikhail explained.
"No-one else is here but these two." Bonnie confirmed.
"Are you sure about that?" Mikhail asked, as he withdrew a knife threateningly and walked towards Zoe, a smug smile on his face as his eyes remained transfixed upon Charlie, but Charlie was quick to tease.
"Here's a better question to ask, Cyclops. Why did your little friend Ben tell you people that this entire station was flooded when it isn't. Or, why these two have been jamming transmissions off the Island." Charlie pointed out, smiling still. Mikhail paused in his tracks and turned to Bonnie.
"Is this true?" He asked them. Before either women could reply, a bleeping sound sounded in the comms room.
"That's Ben." The brunette spoke.
"I'll get it." Mikhail declared, holding his knife up warningly and disappeared alone into the comms room.
Day 92
Zoe crawled onto shore, her heart beating very fast when she ws sure she could see a shark in the not too far distance, but turned out to be lone dolphin, although dispite no immediate danger, she was concerned about it, dolphins swam as a family unit, in pods. Not alone. She didn't have time to worry about this however, she needed to get back to shore, so when she crawled back onto the sandy beach, she collapsed for a moment to catch her breath back.
Zoe tilted her head towards camp to see it was full of bustle. She frowned in confusion. They were all suppose to be at the radio tower, weren't they? Zoe looked crestfallen when she noticed they all seemed to be packing. Jo had failed too. They had both failed, and now Widmore would be coming to destroy everyone on this island.
After a moments pause of catching her breath back, she mustered up the strength to pick herself up and walked into camp, her hair caught bits of sand where she had allowed herself to rest on the sand, her deep scratch she had obtained from Bonnie stung like made from the salt in the water, but she didn't care. Zoe went up to all of them, asking after Jo, some replied they didn't know, and she finally located Jack.
"Jack, where's Jo?" She asked. "I've been looking everywhere."
"She got on a helicopter. She is heading to the boat with Sayid and Desmond." Jack explained as he studied her over with a medical type of glance.
"I'm sorry to hear about Charlie, Zoe. Are you alright?" He asked concerned.
"Shut up Jack! Don't you dare speak his name! If it weren't for your stubborness. If it weren't for your blindness, we wouldn't be in this mess. If you trusted me, Charlie wouldn't be dead. Know why? Because everyone listens to you Jack, you could have stopped it, and now Charlie is dead. THE FATHER OF MY BABY IS DEAD! Because of you!" Zoe wailed, crying, and she stormed away from him and into the jungle. She had gathered information from some of the others in the camp that Locke had his own collection of survivors who believed that what was to come was deadly. She intended to join them. She trusted her own instincts and Charlie's warning, and she was going to honor him.
"Where are you going?" Jack called after her, but Zoe ignored him and continued through into the jungle.
Carrie waited as Richard and Mars spoke privately. She looked at the file in her hands, and decided she didn't need it. She put it on the side for Mars to read the whole thing, just as Richard came back out of what used to be their bedroom.
"C'mon, we'd best get you back," he said, putting a comforting hand on Carrie's shoulder. He protectively put his other hand gently on her stomach. "I need to keep you safe. Both of you."
Carrie smiled and kissed him, before they left the house. "What did she say to you?" She asked.
"Doesn't matter," replied Richard. He didn't want to upset Carrie by telling her about Mars' visions of Kelso. They reached halfway across the Barracks, when they were stopped by Locke emerging from one of the houses.
"Richard!" He called. "What are you doing here?"
"If you don't mind, John, I'm bringing Carrie back to our camp," Richard replied. "She's much safer with us."
Locke agreed, after all he was technically one of the Others now, and Carrie and Richard were just about to leave when they were stopped again by Mars coming outside and shouting Carrie's name. She turned around, and was surprised when Mars flung her arms around her and hugged her. Carrie was slightly confused - she hadn't expected Mars to react this way. "What was that for?" Carrie asked, as Mars released her.
"I've never told anyone this, but my dad used to beat me," Mars replied. "I was ashamed of being his daughter. But now I know I'm not." She handed the red file to Carrie. "Thank you."
Carrie smiled but didn't say anything, glad Mars had reacted positively to the news.
"C'mon." Richard lightly touched Carrie's arm. "Time to go."
Mars handed the red file back to Carrie. "Thank you." she said.
Carrie smiled and started to walk away with Richard.
"Carrie." Mars said. Carrie stopped on her tracks and looked over her shoulders. Mars walked closer and cupped her hand over Carrie's head, healing her bruises and wounds.
"I'm sorry I overreacted." Mars said.
"No, Mars. I'm the one who should be sorry." Carrie interrupted. "What I did was wrong. Really wrong."
Mars moved her hands away. "I'll try my best to help you get off the island, but there's no guarantee. I'll try and ask John about the current situation, and what we can do about it." Mars said. "In the meantime, do what you have to do. I'll be here for quite a while, so you know where to find me."
Carrie and Richard looked at one another. "Thanks." Carrie said.
Mars nodded. "You're welcome."
Mars watched as Carrie and Richard walked to the jungle ahead, and dissapeared in the distance. Mars smiled and walked over to Locke, who was sitting in front of a house not far from her.
----------------------------------------------------
Mars sat down inside an ancient-looking tent.
She looked around - there are journals and documents scattered on the ground, and some handguns neatly placed in a wooden container not far from her.
Mars jerked when she saw Richard coming inside the tent.
"Mars, I want you to meet someone." he said. Mars stood up.
A man with long hair walked inside, his brown scarf neatly tucked inside his blue shirt. Richard walked away.
"You must be Mars McTavish." he said with a thick British accent.
"That's me." Mars replied.
"My name is Charles Widmore." he said. "Take a seat. I have a few questions to ask you."
Day 90
After a few minutes in the comms room, Mikhail re-entered the room. Charlie and Zoe didn't take their eyes off of him. Zoe couldn't help but feel this sweep of cold dread overcome her. Whatever Ben had told Mikhail, she knew it wasn't good news.
"What did Ben say?" Greta asked as he walked back into the room.
"Can we kill them?" Bonnie asked hopefully.
"Is it possible to turn this equipment off?" Mikhail asked, ignoring both their questions.
"What?" Bonnie asked dumbfounded.
"The equipment that's jamming the Island, can you turn it off?" Mikhail repeated.
"Sure. Ben gave us the code." Greta responded.
"You are the only ones who have it?" Mikhail continued to question. Zoe frowned. Why was he asking so many questions about the station?
"Yeah. Why?" Bonnie asked, she too was dazed by Mikhail's behaviour.
"What would happen if this station were to be flooded?" Mikhail wondered.
"Nothing. The casing for the equipment is waterproof, it'll keep going forever." Greta explained.
"Then why do you need to be here?" Mikhail interrogated.
"Because Ben told us to. We were following orders." Bonnie replied defensively.
"And you never asked why?" Mikhail confirmed.
"No. Because I trust him. And I trust Jacob. And the minute I start questioning orders, this whole thing, everything that we're doing here falls apart." Bonnie answered him approvingly. Mikhail glanced to Greta.
"She makes an excellent point." He spoke, before withdrawing his gun, aiming briefly, and shot at her, Greta chocked and splashed into the moon pool, dead. Mikhail then quickly turned on Bonnie, who quickly realised what was going on, and turned to run, but Mikhail shot her in the back, and walked over to her, kicking her over on her front to face him.
"No, please!" Bonnie begged, but Mikhail aimed his gun at her.
"I'm sorry, Bonnie, I too am following orders." Mikhail spoke defiantly and cocked his gun to shoot, but Desmond burst out of his hiding place.
"Hey!" Desmond shouted, Mikhail turned to the source of the voice, and Desmond withdrew a spear gun, aimed and fired, shooting Mikhail in the chest. Zoe jumped and stared in shock as Mikhail collapsed to the ground. Bonnie made to grab for the gun, but Desmond beat her to it, and aimed it at her.
"No, Des! We need her!" Charlie protested, both he and Zoe reading in Desmond's eyes his intentions. Instead, Desmond ran over to them and untied them. Charlie and Zoe joined Desmond to Bonnie's side. She was going to die, no doubt about that.
"What's the code?" Charlie demmanded.
"Go away!" Bonnie ignored.
"Bonnie, let's just get this over with, OK? What's the code?" Charlie repeated.
"She's not gonna tell you, brother." Desmond interrupted in his usual thick Scottish accent.
"Yeah she's gonna tell me." Charlie responded confidently.
"What makes you say that?" Desmond asked.
"Because you said it's my destiny to turn off that jammer. OK, Bonnie, we're both gonna die down here. All right, let's be perfectly honest. A one-eyed maniac just killed your friend, he shot you in the back. It would appear that your glorious leader, Ben, put him up to it. Are you a sodding idiot? You have the opportunity to make Ben very very angry. Why would you not take that?" Charlie asked as Desmond sloped off to check everywhere all over the station.
"Five, four, five..." Bonnie began to reel off. Zoe repeated the numbers and order in her head immediately.
"What?" Charlie responded, he didn't realise at first she was giving him the code.
"Eight, seven, sev-..." Bonnie continued. Zoe added them to the sequence. Five, four, five, eight, seven, seven. Five, four, five, eight, seven, seven. Five, four, five, eight, seven, seven. She repeated the numbers in her head.
"Is that the code?" Charlie wanted to confirm, but Bonnie continued reeling numbers, and even Zoe couldn't keep it up anymore.
"Start again!" Charlie requested frantically.
"Six, one." Bonnie continued and her eyes shut as she slipped into unconciousness, her life was slipping away quickly, and they still didn't have the code.
"Stop, Bonnie. Start from the beginning, start again. Bonnie, Bonnie! Wake up, stop. Bonnie, start again!" Charlie begged frantically.
"Good vibrations." Bonnie whispered.
"What?" Charlie asked confused.
"Beach boys. Good vibrations. On the keypad, the numbers, they're notes. It was programmed by a musician." Bonnie opened her eyes to say, staring at Charlie, before she lost conciousness again, and slipped away from life completly. Zoe and Charlie exchanged significant looks.
"Des? There's diving gear in those racks, yeah?" Zoe asked.
"Aye, there's plenty." Desmond replied.
"Why don't you take care of that, We'll tap out "Good Vibrations."" Zoe suggested.
"All right." Desmond agreed and headed for the lockers.
"Hey, Des." Charlie called. Des paused and turned.
"Aye, brother?" He responded.
"You get any flashes?" Charlie asked.
"No, nuttin." Desmond responded, and continued on with his task.
"Meet you back here then." Charlie responded, and he and Zoe headed into the comms room. She had to think fast to stop Charlie. They entered the room and Charlie headed for the keypad, murmuring Good Vibrations.
"Charlie, stop, you don't want to do this!" Zoe spoke suddenly as Charlie began entering the code.
"What? Are you crazy? Don't you want to get rescued?" Charlie responded as he continued with the code, but Zoe grabbed his hands to stop him.
"The people on that boat aren't here to rescue us!" Zoe spoke urgently. "If they get in contact, they will come here, and kill everyone."
"Don't be ridiculous! Penny wouldn't do that!" Charlie responded and pulled his hands away to continue with the code, the familiar Beach Boys tune ringing in her ears, as she went into a sort of trance. She suddenly realised this place was familiar. She was experiencing deja vu. She had been here before, but when? She remembered being here with Charlie. The flashing light stopped, and she mildly heard Charlie mutter.
"So much for fate." He muttered under his breath. Then Zoe realised. Her dreams. They weren't dreams. They were visions! Out the corner of her eye, a red light began to flash, followed by a beeping, an incoming transmittion. Charlie realised this too and went over to it, turing the switch to answer it.
"No Charlie, don't!" Zoe responded hopelessly as he answered it. The screen fuzzed for a moment before focusing onto a room, and a woman sitting before them.
"Hello? Hello?" She asked desperte for an answer. "Hello?! Can you hear me?"
"Yes, yes I can hear you." Charlie responded.
"Who is this? Who am I speaking to?" The woman continued.
"Charlie er... Charlie Pace, and Zoe Taylor, we're survivors of Flight eight-one-five, Oceanic Flight eight-one-five." Charlie explained.
"Er... where are you?" She contiued to question.
"We're on an Island, we're alive." Charlie confirmed.
"An Island!! Well where, what's your location?" She contiued.
"I dunno. Who's this?" Charlie frowned slightly.
"This is Penelope. Penelope Widmore. How did you get this frequency?" Penny responded. Zoe stared in disbelief. It couldn't be her. It wasn't her boat! Oh gosh, she couldn't have been wrong all this time could she? As Charlie also realised who it was, he called after Des.
"Desmond? Desmond!" Charlie shouted after him.
"Did you just say Desmond?" Penny asked.
"Yeah, he's here, he's with me." Charlie confirmed. Penny smiled at the news.
"Is he OK?" Penny asked.
"He's brilliant! Hey, are you on the boat?" Charlie asked. Penny's face scrunched in confusion.
"What, what boat?" She asked.
"Your boat, eighty miles off shore. Er... Naomi, parachutist." Charlie explained.
"But, I'm not on a boat, who, who's Naomi?" Penny asked. It was then, Zoe and Charlie realised for definate that Naomi had lied. It wasn't Penny's boat, there was no rescue. They glanced out to the moon pool room where Desmond was and then back at the transmittion, both opening their mouths to speak, but Penny cut them off. Her transmittion was begining to fuzz again, and they were interrupted by a tap at the window from outside the station, where, Mikhail was in a wet suit, grinning in the water, holding in his hand a handgrenade.
"Bloody nutter!" Zoe exclaimed in shock, and she grabbed Charlie by his shoulder, dragging him away from the comms room.
"Hello, hello is Desmond there? Desmond, can you hear me? Desmond?" Penny could be heard as Zoe and Charlie ran to get out the room. As Zoe entered the moon pool room, Desmond was running towards them.
"Desmond, no! Don't go in there, it is going to flood!" Zoe exclaimed, as she heard Charlie shut the door behind them.
"Charlie!" Desmond shouted. Zoe turned to see Charlie wasn't by her side. He was on the other side of the door! Zoe turned and started banging on the window, and frantically scrambling at the door as Charlie locked it.
"Charlie! Charlie! What are you doing?!!" She screeched. "Get out now! Quickly!" But it was too late. There was an explosion behind them, the window caved in and water rapidly started to fill up the comms room. Charlie turned to face the water. Zoe bangged on the glass frantically and hopelessly.
"CHARLIE! NO!" She screamed, banging agaisnt the glass. Desmond searched for something to smash the glass with, grabbing fire extinguisher, but it was useless. Tears started to well and drip down her face, no matter how much Zoe screamed and shouted, it wasn't changing anything. Charlie was going to die.
The water had risen significantly now, and Zoe could see Charlie was struggling to do something, he was writing something on his hand. He then dived down into the water, appearing at the window, and placed his hand on it. His hand read clearly "Not Penny's boat" Zoe placed her hand against the glass where his was, she knew this already obviously, but this was for Desmond's sake. He hadn't believed her before, but coming from Charlie, he now understood, and Charlie smiled. Zoe grabbed for a pen she knew she had by chance in her pocket, and wrote on hers, placing it like Charlie had on the glass, sobbing as she did, trying but failing to stay strong for Charlie's sake. Charlie read it.
"Your Baby."
Charlie stared at her stunned, and before he could show any other reaction, he invouluntarily swallowed a lot of water, reeling back, and he drowned, there was no-where to go no for air. Zoe closed her eyes in defeat, and she sank to the floor, sobbing incontrolably. Desmond sank down beside her, and placed an arm around her, but she shook it away violently.
"Don't." She spat angrily. "Don't you dare! This is all your fault! If you hadn't told him about the flashes, if you hadn't told him he had to die in order to save everyone, he wouldn't have done this! He wouldn't have killed himself! I hate you Desmond Hume! GO! LEAVE ME!" She shouted.
"But the raft, we have to get back to the beach!" Desmond protested calmly.
"PISS OFF. I'm not going anywhere with you!" Zoe shouted. "I'll come back in my own time. I'll swim back." She continued furiously. Desmond new he was defeated. There would be no swaying her, and with the guilty look on his face, he knew there was no changing anything, so he left her, diving into the moon pool and back to the surface of the ocean to the raft to get back to the beach camp.
"How are we gonna get back?" Carrie asked, as they passed through the sonic barrier. "It'll take days."
"Not if we run," Richard replied simply.
Carrie raised an eyebrow. "Seriously? I'm rubbish at running, Richard, you know that."
"We'll go as far as you can," he said, "then I'll carry you."
Carrie sighed, then relented. She didn't like the idea of being carried, it made her feel like a child, but she knew they'd get back quicker that way. "Okay," she said. "Okay, fine."
They set off at full speed, and Carrie could tell Richard was going slower than he usually would, because she was much slower than him. After about an hour of running, Carrie had to stop, clutching her sides and panting for breath. She'd ran more than she usually would, because she knew they had to get back to the group quickly, but now she couldn't go any further. She knelt on the ground, her legs too worn out to carry her weight any more. Richard, however, didn't seem to be affected at all.
"C'mon, we're about half an hour away," he said. "Can you manage that?"
Carrie shook her head, panting. "Richard, I can't ... even ... breathe ... properly." Richard went to pick her up, but she shook her head. "No ... let me ... catch ... my breath," she refused. "I'll ... be fine." Richard pulled a bottle of water from the pack he was carrying and handed it to her, sitting down next to her. She took it gratefully, and quickly drunk as much as she could in one go.
"Woah, take it easy," Richard said, gently lowering the bottle from Carrie's lips. "It'll go down your windpipe if you drink it too quick."
Carrie quickly raised her hand to her mouth, trying to muffle a burp. "That went right through me, I need a pee now," she said.
Richard smiled. "Go behind the bush," he said. "I'll keep watch."
"Not watching me I hope, Mister," Carrie laughed as she stood up. "I don't like the idea of being watched urinating." She went past several trees, to make sure no-one would see her.
A few minutes later, she emerged back in the clearing. "Done?" Richard asked, picking up the pack.
"No, I did half a pee," Carrie replied sarcastically. "I'm saving the other half for later."
Richard laughed. "I can tell you got your breath back. You okay to go now?"
Carrie nodded, and the two set off, running back to the camp.
Day 93 - NIGHT
Jack and Juliet approached Daniel and Charlotte where they sat by the fire, playing some sort of memory game with cards.
Jack was obviously very distressed. He hadn't yet been able to reach the freighter with Naomi's phone and had begun to believe that allowing Jo to board that helicopter had been an enormous mistake. "Hey," he called to them. "I've been calling your boat all day. Why isn't anyone answering?"
Charlotte, the snotty one, responded. "We're here, how should we know? If they're not answering, they're probably..."
"Are you telling me there is only one line on that boat?" Jack interrupted rather rudely.
"There is another number that we're only supposed to use in emergencies," Charlotte retorted.
Juliet handed the phone to Charlotte with her customary detached calmness. "It's an emergency."
"Put it on speaker," Jack demanded.
Charlotte dialed the satellite phone and reached a woman named Regina. According to Regina, the helicopter carrying Jo, Sayid, Desmond and Frank, which had left the night before, had not yet arrived on the freighter.
As soon as Jack heard this, he rubbed his head in agitation. "I shouldn't have let her go!" he moaned. Juliet reached out to comfort him but he dodged her and wandered down the beach, away from the other survivors. "I shouldn't have let her go," he repeated over and over to himself as he drifted into the darkness.
