René was in the kitchen again, fumbling through the cupboards when she felt two hands clasp around her hips and turn her forcefully to face him. Starring intently at each other. They've been there before, she realized, but this was different. He brushed her hair behind her neck and slid his hand across her check as he recoiled his hand slowly back. He pressed his body closer to hers pushing them against the counter. She stroked the side of his face and carefully removed his glasses setting them down. Looking at him she slowly buttoned down his shirt and slid it off his shoulders. She carefully studied the scar and stroked her fingers across it on his chest and shoulder. He took her hands into his and raised them above her head pinning her against the cabinets. Her heart raced. He deliberately moved his hand down the length of her arm, down her ribs and back to her hip. She leaned her head to kiss him and he pulled his mouth away with a playful glimmer in his eye. She smiled at him and then the two kissed passionately, coming up for air only when desperately needed.
René blinked, the sun shining heavily in her eyes. The waves crashing calmly on the beach. She sat up and saw Richard talking with Vanessa and looking over some maps. Eric and Adam were out knee length into the water catching fish, most likely for breakfast. René closed her eyes hanging onto the dream that had become a home to her. Even though three years had passed, she could still make out all the lines on his face and the inflections and tones of his voice. It's what soothed her to sleep some nights. Especially since Eric had begun to grow distant from her. It was nothing she didn't expect though. Her feelings, to the misfortune of Eric, had not grown for him, even with Ben gone.
She walked the beach for a while watching Zach and Emma. They had grown so much she hardly could remember what Zach looked like when he arrived to the Island. After a while Richard had called René over motioning her with his hand. She strolled over and sat by his desk.
"You've been more distant lately René. We're a family,"
"A broken family Richard." René interrupted. "We've been broken for three years. No leader, no sign of John. Even you haven't heard from Jacob. Unless there's something you're not telling us." René sighed. "I'm sorry, I don't mean to be rude. I don't feel like we have a purpose right now."
"When he's ready, when we're all ready, he'll let us know." Richard said. The two sat quietly looking over the ocean until called over for breakfast.

Carrie slept restlessly. Her dreams were full of the same things, always Richard, always Mars, always the Island. She had thought at first it was just her missing them, but it was something more. The dreams were vivid - like someone was trying to tell her something. The same things always happened, over and over, but they were mixed up, like parts had been removed.
The jungle. Richard was on the floor, clutching his leg. Mars was kneeling next to him, Richard pointing a gun at her. "I'm not going to hurt you," Mars was saying.
The scene changed. A tent. Mars sat on a bed, Richard came in. "I want you to meet someone," he said.
Out in the open. A figure lay on the ground, Mars and Richard crouching next to it. Richard pulled Mars into a comforting hug, as she began to cry.
Back in a tent. Mars was still upset, Richard was comforting her. He pulled her close and kissed her. Mars drew away, but moments later she kissed him. They wrapped their arms around each other. Richard gently pushed Mars onto the bed, before they pulled off each other's clothes.
Carrie woke up, her heart racing with fright, anger and confusion. She'd never seen the last part before. It sickened her, she wondered why she was dreaming of Richard and Mars together. At that moment, Lynette also decided to wake up. Carrie immediately stood up and carefully lifted her up, walking around the room as she comforted her daughter. She held her tight, thinking of what she'd just dreamt. It had been vivid, much more than the other scenes. Almost like it was real. But surely it wasn't ... it was Richard, he wouldn't do something like that to her, not again. And Mars, sure they hadn't known each other long before Carrie left, but she thought she could trust her not to sleep with Richard.
After a while, Lynette had gone back to sleep, so Carrie carefully placed her back in her bed before climbing into her own. Her head was swimming with the images she'd dreamt about. She hoped it wasn't true, and had only been her vivid imagination.

Andrew opened his eyes and tried to focus on his surroundings. He tried to move his head, but something is stopping his head from turning. He looked down to his neck and saw a spinal collar tightly fastened to his heck. Judging from his surroundings, Andrew could tell that he is in a hospital. Andrew shifted on the bed and winced in pain when he felt a sharp sting on his lower abdomen.
He closed his eyes and sighed - trying to figure out what have happened.
He watched as two police officers began to enter the room.
"Andrew O'Sullivan?" One of the officers asked, his voice deep and strong.
Andrew tried to talk, but all that came out from his mouth was a light groan.
"You were found unconscious in front of your apartment." The officer explained. "You have a fractured neck and a minor abdominal injury. Luckily the first responders arrived on time."
Andrew took a deep breath. "Oh", he managed to say.
"My name is Graham Smith." he said and shook Andrew's hand. "I'm here to talk about your friend, Martin."
"Oh," Andrew answered hazily. "He left --"
"Yes, we know that he left a few hours ago." Graham explained.
"And where is he?" Andrew asked, demanding.
"He.." Graham looked at his fellow officer.
Andrew waited.
"He died, Mr. O'Sullivan."

René sat on the beach chucking stones into the water as the tide receded back from her. Her toes dug into the wet sand, she wiggled them free and repeated digging them in again. Something about this soothed her, almost like some strange meditation. Richard walked over and sat down next to her. He looked over her shoulder down the beach and saw Eric talking with some people. "Still not talking?" He asked breaking the silence. René threw another rock and nodded her head, "Nope." She sighed and looked in the same general direction.
"It's hard for me as well René. Knowing she's out there, with my child. Thinking she's found someone else." René looked at him now.
"I don't think Carrie would ever find anyone else Richard. Looking everyday into your child's eyes and seeing you starring back. There's no way. She'd rather die alone. That much I knew about her." Richard smirked and a small smile came across his face.
"Maybe" he said.
"Oh come on. Maybe. She left because she would have died, you did right by her getting her off the Island." The tide had extended out a bit further now, it was becoming increasingly hard for René to get the rocks in the deeper water. Her toes digging into the sand becoming easier as it dried. "I still have dreams about him ya know. I can hear his voice, all the conversations we had. At least you had something Richard. I got an empty heart. He saved us, but it's not good enough for me." She laid back on the sand, putting her arms up behind her head keeping her hair from getting too much sand in it.
"You're only human René."
"But don't you think, after all these years I could just let it go? That I could wake up one morning and not think about him even once during my day. It amazes me, how much I've changed. If I had a mirror I wouldn't recognize myself I think."
"It's not my place to say. You know that." René rolled her eyes.
"Men, you just want to fix it." She took a long pause. "I know you had some differences with him. I could see the tension." Richard laughed.
"I've known Ben a long time." Richard paused. "We've definitely had some differences of opinion at times." This time Richard picked up one of René rocks and threw it as hard as he could into the open water.
"Think you'll ever see her again? Carrie?" René asked.
Richard starred out into the deep blue horizon. "I hope so."

Andrew froze.
"He died?" he asked.
"Apparently he commited suicide a few hours ago. He jumped off a cliff not far away from here." Graham opened his notebook. "Based from the data collected by the forensic team, he suffered major internal bleeding, broke his C3, L5, L8 and L11 spine, and because he broke his spine in 4 different places, some of them pierced through his internal organs."
Graham flip the page on his notebook. "Thus, explaining his internal bleeding. We have contacted his parents and family --there are some ID cards left on his pick-up truck." he said.
"So.. So.." Andrew flabbergasted "He just.."he put his right hand on his forehead. "He just killed himself like that?"
Graham smiled and closed his book. "Apparently yes."
Andrew tried to hide his tears, but his lack of movement stopped him. "What else?" he said.
"We might come here pretty often to ask you a few questions about him." Graham reach down to his pocket and pulled out a sealed ziploc bag. "By the way, we found this along in his pocket." he handed the bag to Andrew.
Andrew reached out and opened the sealed bag. Inside it a piece of folded paper.
Andrew unfolds the paper. It's a poem written by Martin.
Patience
I can't sleep People chatter, dogs barking The world fades into the distance Like a brick stone wall Struck by the sound of the beatings Fire and dust next to the other
I want to speak My voice disappears, my strength fades away Enough. It doesn't matter. This world won't hear me. This world doesn't care.
River water turns to ice. And life isn't life anymore.
So I did what I've done before. Shutting my eyes and ears, And waiting for what's going to come.
(PS: Pardon the un-poetic-ness, guys. This poem is translated from Indonesian to English.
Andrew sighed and handed the paper back to Graham.
"See me tomorrow." he said.

Day 96
Jo heaved Zoe over her shoulder and dragged her towards Ben's old house which Ben, Locke and Hurley were busy boarding up. Sawyer got to the house first with Claire in his arms, limp and motionless, but she was murmering for Aaron.
"Let us in!" Sawyer barked through the door after unsuccessfully trying to get through the front door which was jammed locked. "Open the god damn door!" Sawyer, Claire and Jo could make out Ben's protests on the otherside of the door.
"Hugo, you don't want to do that." He spoke warningly. Sawyer hearing what was said continued shouting at them desperately.
"Open the door! Open the damn door!" He screamed. The front window suddenly smashed as Hugo had chucked a chair through it and he helped Sawyer with Claire clamber through safely, followed by Jo with Zoe, who was getting considerably heavy with her bump, so Hurley lifted her through instead and Jo climbed through, shutting the curtain behind her.
"What happened?" Hurley asked, paniced by a small flow of blood issuing from Zoe's gunshot wound.
"She got shot. Help me carry her to the kitchen table. I need to get the bullet wound out." Jo told him, and he helped obligingly. Zoe was still unconcious. "John, is there any alcohol spirits?"
"In that cupboard." John responded, pointing to a cabinet near the kitchen. Jo darted over and grabbed a bottle of vodka, and poured it over Zoe's wound before riffling through kitchen draws, selecting tools that would help her get the bullet out.
"Jo, there really isn't time for this. We may have to run, and she certainly isn't going to be running any time soon, so there's no point helping her right now." Ben spoke to Jo coldly. Jo only responded with a furious stare, which made Ben realise he wasn't going to change her mind and left her to it.
"Is she alright?" John spke to Sawyer as he placed her down on one of the sofa's.
"She got her bell rung, but she's gonna be all right." Sawyer responded as John continued closing drapes in the room. Sawyer moved from the couch to beside the doorway.
"They just started shootin'. Why? Why slaughter people without even telling us what they want?" Sawyer asked in his ususal thick southern accent.
"Those people were murdered to make you angry, James. So you'd be more likely to come storming in here and throw me to the wolves." Ben explained, making Sawyer grab Ben by his lapel forcibly.
"Yeah, what's wrong with that? Sounds like a great plan to me." Sawyer responded, and turned to talk to Locke. "What do you say, on three?" Before John could answer, the doorbell rang, and everyone stared at the front door, causing everyone with guns to point them at the door readily. Sawyer goes to peek through the drapes, but Ben interrupts him.
"I wouldn't do that if I were you." Ben warned in a sing-song tone of voice.
"Shut up!" Sawyer snapped, ignoring Ben's warning, and peered through the drapes, pistol first, nodding to himself, he reaches for the front door and opens it with the help of Locke pushing the couch out of the way, Ben cocking his rifle, pointing it at the door. Sawyer grabbed Miles who was at the door and shuts it again. Locke pushed the couch back into place.
"Miles?" John asked speculatively.
"Who the hell let you out?" Sawyer demmanded.
"The people who gave me this." Miles responded, holding out a walkie talkie to Ben. "They want to talk." Sawyer automatically pats Miles down, checking for weapons, or any devices that could seriously implicate them.
"How many of 'em are there?" John began to interrogate Miles.
"Maybe six. I'm not sure." Miles responded.
"The hell you mean, you ain't sure? You came over on the same boat with 'em, didn't ya?" Sawyer demmanded.
"It sounds like Keamy and his men." Jo interrupted from her task.
"They told me they were just security." Miles shrugged.
"Security for what?" Locke asked frowning.
"For him." Miles responded, nodding at Ben. "Once they got him, to escort him back to the mainland."
"Well, Miles, sounds like you're not gonna collect your $3.2 million." Ben scowled.
"Just take it." Miles sighed, handing Ben the walkie.
"Why would I talk to them?" Ben frowned.
"Because they have a hostage." Miles replied seriously.
"Well, then they've badly miscalculated, 'cause every single one of my people is prepared to die in service to this island." Ben spoke confidently.
"It's your daughter!" Miles exclaimed. The colour from Ben's face drained instantly, and the confidence disappeared into fear. Even Jo and Hurley stopped what they were doing and stared at Ben compassionately as he took the walkie-talkie. Zoe was begining to stir now. Jo had got the bullet out too, all was left to do was to cover the wound to prevent infection.
"Charlie?" She whsipered as she woke. Meanwhile, Ben spoke into the walkie.
"Hello?" Ben spoke cautiously.
"Am I speaking to Benjamin Linus?" Jo recognised Keamy's creepy voice.
"That's right." Ben swallowed.
"My name is Martin Keamy. I'm an employee of Charles Widmore." Keamy explained.
"Charlie?" Zoe spoke quietly, feeling dizzy and disoriented as she sat up.
"Sorry hun, it's us." Jo spoke to her softly as Zoe began to realise where they were.
"What happened?!" Zoe spoke paniced.
"It's alright, you were shot, you'r fine now though, I got the bullet out." Jo continued to speak camly.
"The baby!" Zoe continued to panic.
"The baby will be fine, so long as you don't stress." Jo spoke pointedly. Zoe nodded in understandment. Her shoulder was stinging but she felt ok. She slid off from the table and smiled warmly at Jo.
"Thanks - again. How many times have you saved me life now?" Zoe asked.
"I've lost count." Jo admitted.
"Who's Charles Widmore?" Sawyer whispered at Locke. Zoe froze at the mention of Charles Widmore's name.
"Later." Locke whispered back as fear crept up Zoe's spine, the hairs on the back of her neck standing on end.
"I'd like you to go look out your east window so we can talk about this face-to-face." The walkie spoke back to Ben.
"It's Keamy." Jo whispered into Zoe's ear. Zoe nodded, remembering Jo mentioning who he was the previous night. Ben walked over to the significant window, and peeled back the draped slightly so he could see outside.
"To the left. You see me?" Keamy asked.
"Yeah, I see you." Ben responded tonelessly.
"All right, Mr. Linus, these are my terms: You're gonna step out the front door, put your hands above your head, and you're gonna walk straight to me. Once I have you in my custody, then I promise you that no one else in that house will be harmed." Keamy spoke and a friendly and convincing voice. The problem was it was too friendly, too convincingly. Zoe didn't believe a word of it.
"You and I both know that once you have me, there's nothing to stop you from killing everybody else on this island." Ben responded, also disbelieving Keamy's words.
"What kind of guy do you think I am?" Keamy responded, as if hurt by Ben's accusation.
"Martin Christopher Keamy" Ben began reeling off a list of everything he knew about him, he had clearly done his research. "--former first sergeant, United States Marine Corps, served with distinction from 1996 to 2001, but since then, you've worked with a number of mercenary organizations, specifically in Uganda. So I know exactly what kind of man you are, Mr. Keamy, and we can dispense with the formalities."
"Okay, Ben. You got it." Keamy responded with a tone that told Zoe they were all in trouble. She couldn't stand there and do nothing, she couldn't see what was going on. She walked over to the otherside of the window, despite whispered protests to watch what was going on, and stared in horror as one of Keamy's men pushed Alex out from the foliage of the outskirts of the jungle into Keamy's hands. She could feel her blood boil. How dare he even touch her, she couldn't help thinking.
The dream she had the night before suddenly triggered her mind. She was alive - but where were Karl and the french woman?
"Get down." Keamy ordered Alex, pushing her down to her knees.
"Get your ass out here right now... or I'm gonna kill your daughter." Keamy promised. His tone had changed now. It was cold, uncaring, and deadly serious. Ben didn't speak for a moment, he was clearly trying to think quickly.
"I'd like to present a counterproposal." He spoke suddenly.
"I'm listening." Keamy answered.
"You and your friends... You turn around. Walk back to your helicopter. You fly away and forget you ever heard of this island." Ben proposed.
"Tell your daddy good-bye." Keamy spoke more to Ben then Alex. Zoe took in a sharp intake of breath.
"No! Ben! Do something!" She pleaded, but Ben ignored her. " Dad... They're serious. They killed Karl and my mother." Alex spoke into the walkie that had been handed to her.
"Alex... I have this under control. Everything's gonna be okay." Ben spoke calmly.
"Please, daddy! Just please, please." Alex begged.
"You have ten seconds, Ben." Keamy spoke coldy again as he ripped the walkie out of Alex's grip.
"Okay, listen." Ben began to panic, knowing the ball was full on in Keamy's court.
"Nine..." Keamy began to count down.
"She's not my daughter." Ben began, his voice failing him.
"Eight..." Keamy continued.
"I stole her as a baby from an insane woman. She's a pawn, nothing more. She means nothing to me. I'm not coming out of this house. So if you want to kill her, go ahead and do it--" Ben continued desperately. The whole house heard the gun shot, and Zoe and Ben saw it, Alex, falling lifelessly to the ground, she was dead before she even hit the ground. Keamy stared at Ben for mere seconds, a cruel smile spead across his face before stepping away and out of sight. Ben stared on dumbfounded, shocked and speechless. Zoe was equally so, she clasped her hand over her mouth in horror, her eyes already welling with tears. She couldn't believe it. She couldn't believe anyone could be so cruel. Alex was dead, and it was Ben's fault.

Day 99 night
The sky was pitch black. The only light that could be seen were the glimmering faint luminescent stars when concentrated on. Almost everyone was asleep except for a lone few keeping lookout. René sat and sketched in her mind's eye what she saw. Across camp a small fire still crackled as the cinder burned and glowed. Eric walked slowly over to René.
"Can't sleep?" he asked as he sat down next to her.
"No. Bad dreams, bad feelings." She said.
"What is it?" Eric said as he stroked the hair out of her face.
"Nothing." René said as she leaned on his shoulder.
"Come with me" He whispered as he stood up and grabbed her hand and pulled her to her feet.
He ran quickly through the jungle not letting go of René's hand. She was trying to figure out how he could see so well. After about ten minutes they arrived to a small waterfall and stream that winded through the jungle. He took off his shirt, climbed the side and began to dive into the pool. René noticed the sweat glistening off his chest from what little light reflected off the water. After a moment he probed the surface of the dark water. "Come on!" He yelled to her.
She unbuttoned her pants and shirt and took them off leaving them on a rock near the pool. She waded slowly into the warm water and swam over to Eric. "You just wanted me to bathe is all." She said as she wrapped her arms around him, the two kicking their legs treading through the water.
"You were beginning to smell." He said as he laughed and she smiled at him. He caressed her neck with his lips. She let him. She wasn't going to fight the one pleasure she had recently found. They sank below the water blinded by darkness, seeing one another only by random touch.
Before long they had found their way to shore. René let go her worries and just let Eric take full control of her body. He knew they were far enough away from camp to let her moans of pleasure be ignored by all but the jungle. As the two intertwined themselves René thought she heard a noise.
"Someone's arguing." She said between kisses.
"It's nothing," Eric reassured her.
"Eric, I think I heard Carrie?"
"I don't care." Eric said as he continued kissing René and they continued their animalistic dance when all of a sudden they did in fact hear a familiar voice.
"s**t, sorry!" Carrie exclaimed as she obviously found herself stumbling across a private moment between her friends. She quickly turned around and grabbed Richard by the arm to drag him in the other direction.
"I tried to tell you..." René heard Richard say as Carrie dragged him off.
René and Eric felt embarrassed but both started laughing. René sat atop Eric and he sat up looking at her. He pulled pieces of wet hair away from her face and wrapped them behind her ear. She kissed him and they continued once again. René wasn't going to let a little interlude of intrude get in the way of this particular night. She didn't know why, but something inside her soul said after tonight, their lives would not be the same.
After an hour or so the two laid floating in the water starring up at the stars again. Eric reached for René's hand to hold it. "I love you" she heard him whisper. She couldn't have been more still if she tried, not knowing how to reply she sank into the water and stayed under until her lungs burned for air. When she came back up Eric just starred at her. She just didn't feel that way, she wasn't going to lie to him. He smiled at her, swam to the shore and began to get dressed. "We better get back." He told her and waited for her to come back to shore.
"It's ok," he paused. "Just letting you know." They walked back to camp but before laying down to sleep she took Eric by the hand and pulled him close to her.
"Thank you." René told him and he just smiled back, kissed her on the forehead on her newly branded scar and left to sit by the dwindled fire to keep watch.

Day 99 night
"Carrie!"
Carrie turned around at the jungle's edge as she saw Richard come up to her. "Where are you going?" He asked.
"Get some mangos for the morning," she replied, before continuing into the forest.
"Let me come with you," Richard said, following her into the jungle.
Carrie sighed. "I was hoping to go on my own actually, Richard. I don't need you by my side all the time."
"Carrie, I just wanna look after you, you know that."
"We've had this conversation before, Richard, it always ends the same. You perform some act of overprotectiveness, we argue about it, you agree you're being overprotective, but you do nothing about it!"
"What, you expect me to?" Richard frowned.
"God, you're such a typical man, Richard!" Carrie exclaimed in frustration. She turned around to face him and walked backwards as they emerged out of the jungle. "You say you'll do something, but you never do."
Richard didn't reply, just looked out at the waterfall behind Carrie. She realised what he was looking at, then turned around to see for herself - René and Eric, intertwined at the rocks. "Sh*t," she said. "Sorry." She turned away and dragged Richard away.
"I tried to tell you," he said.
"No you didn't, Richard," Carrie replied, "you just stared. That's not telling. It's staring."
"Maybe that should be us when we get back," Richard grinned flirtatiously, placing his hands on Carrie's hips.
"I'm annoyed at you," she said. "Why am I tempted to agree?"
"Because you love me," he said, moving his body closer to hers.
"Y'know, that must be it," Carrie agreed, wrapping her arms around Richard's neck and kissing him. "C'mon, let's get back. I don't think we wanna be here with those two cavorting nearby."

Day 96
"I don't see 'em. They just left her body there and disappeared into the jungle." Sawyer spoke bitterly as he went from window to window, checking for any sign of Keamy and his men.
"They won't be gone for long. It's gonna be dark in about 20 minutes, and then they're gonna come for him." Locke pointed out.
"Then let's just hand him over." Sawyer spat, indicating Ben. Zoe shook her head. Any dealings with Widmore and his cohorts were out of the question for her.
"No Sawyer, we are not going to compromise with Widmore. He killed me family and friends. No chance in hell I'm giving him what he wants." oe spoke firmly.
"Besides, I don't think these people have any intentions of letting us walk out of here alive, James, no matter what we do." John added.
"Well, I ain't got no intention of dyin'." Sawyer responded.
"He changed the rules." Ben inturrupted suddenly through clenched teeth, making everyone stare. John frowned, and approached him, but Ben walked away, past him, so John continued to go to the window and close the curtains.
"What? Who? What rules?" John asked curiously, but Ben appeared to be ignoring him. Sawyer walked from Claire's side, as she had woken to whisper to John.
"You know I'm right." He whispered as Ben bolted, pulling a bookshelf to one side.
"Our best chance here is to toss him out and fend for ourselves." Sawyer insisted, turning to look at Ben, realising at once Ben was retreating to some sort of secret room.
"Hey! Where you goin'?" Sawyer demanded, but Ben ignored him, vanishing inside, Sawyer tried to run after him, but it appeared somehow the way in has now to locked tightly shut. This didn't impress Sawyer, and he started pounding on the door furiously.
"Open this damn door! Open up!" Sawyer demmanded, but got no response from Ben in return.
"Open the damn door! Son of a bitch just left us here. Open the damn door!" Sawyer continued to shout, but to no avail. Hurley appeared back into the room having gone to fetch Aaron since Claire had stirred awake.
"What's going on?" Claire asked.
"Claire?" Locke responded, concerned.
"You all right, sweetheart?" Sawyer asked with the same concern in his voice.
"Yeah, a bit wobbly, but, uh, I'll live." Claire smiled, and took Aaron into her arms.
"Well, I wouldn't be too sure about that." Miles spoke sarcastically as Ben emerged from his secret room, pushing past Sawyer.
"Excuse me, James." Ben added as an after thought after pushing past him.
"Scuse you?" Sawyer snided sarcastically, but Ben ignored him, picking up the walkie-talkie from the couch and pocketing it.
"What were you doing in there?" Sawyer demmanded.
"Okay, listen to me very carefully: I need all of you to do exactly as I say. In a minute, we have to run from this house as fast as we can. At that moment, when I give the order, I want you to head straight for the tree line." Ben explained in an orderly tone.
"You mean towards the guys with guns?" Hurley mused, confused.
"No, we want to be as far away from them as possible." Ben responded with high importance, shaking his head as he said no. As he finished speaking, the house began shaking, Zoe had to grab onto a chair to stop herself tumbling to the floor, glass shattered around her, making her yelp slightly. Zoe managed to manover herself to one of the windows, and stared in shock as a giant billowing centipede of black smoke barrelling out of the tree line like a freight train bound for hell, lightening arching inside the black smoke, roaring and chitters sent a sharp icy shiver up her spine, and the familiar feeling of the back of her hairs standing on end returned. The smoke freight train sweeped through the barracks, sweeping up a little tail of smoke as it passed Ben's house.
"Okay, outside. Outside now!" Ben barked his order confidently.
Locke, Ben, Sawyer, Hurley, Claire, Aaron, Zoe Jo and Mars rushed outside. Ben lead them through the barracks towards the treeline, but they all stop stock sill and watched as watches as the muzzle flashes and lightning bolts light up the night in strobe. They all heard gunfire close by followed by shouting, and the terrible deep roar of the Monster. Black smoke curls and twisted around in the jungle. Not in the too far distance, they could all hear Keamy's men shout in fear and outrage.
"What did you do?" Locke shouted at Ben, but he ignored him, and a tree uprooted right infront of them.
"Did you just call that thing?" Hurley asked, but before Ben could answer, one of Keamy's men dressed in fatigues carrying a machine gun ran towards the group. Sawyer readied to shoot him, but there was no need. The soldier knealt down onto his back and fired his weapon vainly and desperately into the merciless smoke. The monster enveloped him and shot a tentacle at him that knocked him to the ground, wrapping around him, and dragged him away, clawing at the turf, leaving his gun behind. The man disappeared into the jungle screaming in terror. Miles looked on incredulously, then turns chicken and ran in the opposite direction. Zoe stood in shock, dumbfounded and in horror at what had happened before her very eyes.
"Fall back!" A distant voice ordered in the jungle.
"Go! Go, go!" Sawyer turned to Claire, Hurley, Zoe, Jo and Mars, all whom didn't need telling twice, but Jo seemed to linger, obliged to to support her brother, who had just lost his daughter, and his neice.
"Head for the trees. I'll catch up with you." Ben instructed as he walked back towards the barracks, Jo by his side.
"Hey, where are you going?" Locke demmanded.
"I have to say good-bye to my daughter, John." Ben was struggling to fight back his tears, his voice wavering as he struggled to stay brave. Ben extended his hand and Locke handed him one of the shotguns he was carryinh, before running off with the others.
John, Mars, Sawyer, Claire, Hurley and Zoe gathered in a group together in the jungle, they also bumped into a rather frantic and frightened Miles.
"I think your chopper buddies ran that way, if you wanna catch up." Sawyer sniped at Miles coldly.
"Yeah, I think I'll stay with you guys for--for now." Miles stammered. Sawyer handed Miles a torch. Locke and Sawyer drew their guns as footsteps approach. It was Ben and Jo.
"Sorry about your daughter." John spoke, genuinely sympathetic.
"Thank you, John." Ben responded quietly.
"That being said, you lied to me. You told me you didn't know what the smoke monster was." Locke spoke seriously.
"You can ask Jacob all about it when we go to the cabin." Ben promised.
"Hang on. "Jacob"? Who the hell's Jacob?" Sawyer jibbed, he hadn't heard of Jacob yet, but of course, he and Claire were the only ones who hadn't heard of Jacob and his existance yet.
"He's the man that's gonna tell us what to do next, James." Ben explained.
"You know what? I'm done with all this. I never should have followed you wackos in the first place. I'm goin' back to the beach, and Zoe, Jo, Mars, Claire and the kid are comin' with me." Sawyer turned to all he had spoken about. "You all good with that?" Aaron cried his reponse, and Claire jiggled him to try calm him down.
"Yeah, I'm good with that." Claire responded.
"I'm not." Zoe responded, giving Sawyer an apologetic look. "Sorry Sawyer, but best bet of survival is with John and Ben, going back to the beach could mean Keamy has men there. We don't know. I've never met Jacob, but Ben and all his followers seem to trust him, so I think it's worth a shot." Sawyer shook his head in disappointment.
"Yeah, I'm going with them too." Mars added, also with an apologetic tone.
"I'm coming with you." Miles interupted.
"Let's go. You, too, Hurley." Sawyer added bitterly. Sawyer proceeded to take off. Locke cocked his gun and pointed it at Sawyer. Sawyer stoped in his tracks and rolled his eyes exasperatedly.
"Have you lost your mind?" Sawyer exclaimed angrily.
"Hugo stays with us." Locke responded simply.Sawyer whipped around and cocked his gun, pointing it at Locke. Locke doesn't shoot him, they stance in a Mexican style stand-off.
"Not a chance." Sawyer spoke stubbornly.
"Wait. Leave me out of this." Hurley begged.
"I'm sorry, Hugo. We need you to find the cabin." Locke spoke apologetically to him.
"He ain't goin' anywhere with you, you crazy son of a bitch." Sawyer interrupted, still angrily.
"Stop! Put the guns down." Hurley pleaded. "I'll go with Locke."
"Hugo." Sawyer responded, with a tone that said he had a choice.
"It's okay, Sawyer. Please, put your gun down." Hurley assured him, but Sawyer looked doubtful. Locke willingly lowered his own gun.
"You, too." Hurley spoke to Sawyer.
"You don't have to do this." Sawyer told him, putting his gun away.
"You guys go back to the beach. I'll catch up sooner or later." Hurley promised. Sawyer desisted, and he, Miles, (Jo?) and Claire disappeared off into the jungle, leaving John, Ben, Zoe, Mars (and Jo?) were left behind to figure out what step to take next.
" You harm so much as one hair on his curly head... I'll kill you." Sawyer had warned before they left, to which Locke had responded. "Fair enough.
"Which way?" Locke asked.
"Follow me." Ben ordered, and he stared a path through into the jungle.

Day 100
"Richard!"
Richard and Carrie both looked around simultaniously as René called urgently. Richard ran over, Carrie following instinctively as Richard had told her the day before to stick by his side. She could tell, as each day went by, he was getting more and more worried about her and the baby.
"Adam, what are you doing here?" Richard asked.
"Saw a chopper come in," Adam panted. "Carrying military. It's an assault. I left Johan at the station. On my way I heard gunfire. They somehow didn't see me, but they have Alex. Karl and Rousseau are dead."
Richard thought for a moment, then made a quick decision. "Vanessa, Eli, Adam, Kim and Eric. Drop your things. We're leaving," he said. As the five of them prepared themselves, Carrie felt rather hurt and annoyed. She was much better with a gun than Kim - she'd taken forever just to learn how to make it shoot. Carrie'd learnt everything in a short space of time. She knew Richard had chosen Kim over her because of the baby, which was understandable, but she still resented it. "René, take them the rest of the way," Richard instructed.
René looked frustrated. She grabbed Richard's arm and dragged him to the side, and began having a hushed conversation with him. Carrie frowned. What on Earth were they talking about? Richard called for Harper, and instructed her on how to get to the Temple. She looked annoyed, but then again she always looked annoyed.
The larger group began on their way to the Temple, but Carrie didn't. "I'm staying with you," she said defiantly to Richard.
"No," he refused immediately. "I know I said to stick by me, but this is too dangerous."
"I can handle it, Richard, you know I can." Carrie stubbornly refused to give in.
"I am in absolutely no doubt of what you can do, Carrie, but I can't let you do this. We have to think of the baby."
"Can't or won't?"
Richard hesitated. "Okay, fine. But you have to promise me you'll do exactly what I say."
"Of course."
"You have to understand, Carrie. When I tell you to run, hide or go back, you have to do it."
"I promise," Carrie emphasised both words.
"If I tell you to leave me, and save yourself and the baby, do you promise you will?"
"I-"
"Carrie." Richard said seriously.
"Okay, fine," Carrie sighed reluctantly.
"Good girl." Richard smiled and kissed her briefly on the lips. "C'mon, let's go," he said to the group as a whole as Carrie drew her gun out from tucked in her trousers.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Carrie watched from the bushes as Richard confronted Sayid and Kate. She couldn't help but feel proud as he remained calm throughout the whole process.
"Take one more step-" Sayid warned. Carrie and the rest of the group took that as the cue to emerge from the bushes, cocking their guns.
"I said drop your guns," Richard said simply. He grabbed Kate's gun, before Sayid reluctantly handed his over.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Carrie stood behind a tree, ready to cover for Richard if she needed to. Three gunshots pierced the air, and Keamy toppled off of Sayid. Kate and Ben emerged in the clearing. Ben looked towards Richard. "Thank you, Richard," he said.
"My pleasure," Richard replied.
Ben politely asked Kate, who had picked up Keamy's knife, to cut him free. She hesitated, then did so.
"What was the arrangement?" Ben asked casually.
"They help us free you, we let them off the Island," Richard replied.
"Fair enough," Ben said quickly, no doubt to stop himself from considering not letting them go. He turned to Kate and Sayid and said, "the helicopter is yours."
"So we can go?" Kate asked, rather confused. "Off the Island? That's it?"
"That's it," Ben shrugged.
Richard looked at Carrie, with a look of worry on his face. Come on, Richard, Carrie thought desperately, this is my only chance.
"Is there a problem, Richard?" Ben asked.
Richard looked directly at Kate and Sayid. "Carrie has to go with you," he said. Carrie took this as her cue to step out from the bushes.
Kate and Sayid looked at each other, both clearly wondering if this was some kind of ruse to get them to stay. "Okay," Kate said. Sayid looked at her, rather annoyed. He'd obviously come to a different conclusion.
Richard looked relieved. "Thank you," he said, as Ben left for the Orchid. Kate and Sayid nodded, before turning to go back to the helicopter, until it was just Carrie, Richard and the rest of the Others left. "Go ahead back to the Temple," he said to the group. "I'll catch you up."
As the group left, Carrie put her gun back in her trousers. She was surprised when Vanessa came up to her. "Here," she said, handing a red file to Carrie. "Amelia told me you might need this before you go." Carrie opened the file, and realised it was the one on her dad. She knew immediately where she was going to go.
"Thanks, Vanessa," Carrie smiled. Vanessa smiled back, before following the rest of the group, and finally Carrie and Richard were alone. She dropped the red file on the ground, and hugged Richard tightly. He hugged her back, both of them filled with so many things they wanted to say, but couldn't.
"I guess this is goodbye," Richard said reluctantly, holding her tight. He didn't want to let go, not now, not after everything they'd been through to be where they were with each other, to be who they were. Because of each other, they were both better people.
Carrie held in a sob. "For now," she whispered, burying her head in his shoulder. She didn't want to admit that she, too, thought she wouldn't be able to get back. She was determined to try, but she still doubted it.
"You'll be okay," Richard comforted her the best he could. "I know you will."
"Not without you," Carrie sobbed. She allowed the tears to run down her cheeks and the sobs to escape her lips. She didn't care about hiding her insecurities anymore. All she wanted was to hold and be held, and Richard was the only person who could do that.
Richard gently placed both his hands on Carrie's stomach, his heart leaping at the thought of their child being in there. A child he'd never meet. "I love you," he said. "Both of you. So much, and you have to remember that. I always have, and always will."
Carrie smiled weakly. "I love you too," she said, kissing him. They wrapped their arms around each other, savouring the moment as they knew, potentially, it was their last. Carrie noticed things she hadn't noticed before - the way Richard kissed with varying pressure; the way he spread his arms around her back, holding her more securely; the way his manly, unshaven stubble rubbed against her smooth, girlish skin. All these things she had five years to notice, but hadn't until now, at the last minute.
"Go," Richard said, after they broke free after a few minutes. "Be careful."
Carrie picked up the file she'd dropped on the floor. "You too," she said, planting a gentle kiss on his cheek. She paused, taking in her last breath of him. He smelt different from staying in the outdoors - she could smell nature on him. She could feel his breath on her cheek, and knew he, too, was taking his last breath of her. Reluctantly, Carrie drew away and made her way to the tree line, in the direction Kate and Sayid had gone. She turned around, taking one last look at the man she loved, the father of her child and the only person who could truly make her whole - Richard Alpert.

Mars was walking down the jungle back to the beach when she heard someone talking from the distance. She watched as Sayid, Kate, Carrie, Sawyer, Hurley and Jack began to emerge from the bushes.
"Whoa. Where are you guys going?" Mars asked, unaware of that have happened.
"We are going to the freighter." Sayid said.
"Hang on." Mars said. "What exactly happened?"
"We're going home." Kate said. "The helicopter's not far from here." Kate paused. "Do you want to come with us?"
"Um," Mars hesitated.
"Yeah dude. You can go back home... and... safe people's lifes again." Hurley said. "I'm sure the helicopter still got more space in it."
Mars looked down. "I would love to go back," she said. "The thing is, I have no one to go back to." she looked at Hurley and smiles. "Besides, all these people who are left behind might need my help later on."
Hurley shrugs. "Whatever you say, dude."
Mars watched as the group began to walk. Mars walked towards Carrie.
"Carrie," Mars said. "I want you to do me a favor."
Carrie glanced at Mars. Mars could tell the she was deeply upset about something. Her face wet with tears. She took a deep breath. "What?"
Mars reached to her pocket and pulled out her necklace. "I want you to give this to Martin." she said. "Tell him not to give up his hope."
Carrie took the necklace from Mars. "I will."
Mars smiled. "Thanks."
"Mars, I also need your help." she said. "I want you.. I want you to take care of Richard for me." Carrie tried to held back her tears.
"I will. I'll look after him for you." Mars said, reassuring.
Carrie nodded and wiped away her tears.
"So this is it, huh?" Mars said, looking up at Carrie.
"Yeah." Carrie nodded.
"Take care of yourself."

Day 97
"Who builds a cabin in the middle of the jungle anyway?" Hurley asked as they all walked through the jungle in no real direction.
"That's a good question." John responded unhelpfully.
"So? How about answering it?" Hurley asked slightly impaiently.
"I don't know." John admitted.
"And why are we even going there?" Hurley asked. Zoe listened intently.
"Because hopefully, the man who lives in the cabin can tell us what to do about the people who are trying to kill us." Locke answered him seriously.
"We've been walking all day. Are we gonna get there soon?" Hurley complained. Zoe couldn't help agreeing. The baby was taking its toll on her, she needed rest soon. John turned to Ben.
"How long?" John asked.
"I don't know. I've been following him." Ben admitted, shrugging his shoulders.
"What? What do you mean, you've been following him?" Locke responded bewildered.
"I'm not even in front." Hurley accused, slightly frustrated. Zoe sighed impaiently.
"I have no idea where the cabin is. Hugo's the last one who saw it." Ben prompted.
"Oh, this is just awesome." Hurley sighed in outburst sarcastically.
"What do you think we should do, John?" Ben looked at him genuinely as if he really were the new leader.
"We're making camp." Locke decided.
"What? Here in the dark with the monster?!" Zoe cried in disbelief.
"and... him?" Hurley added, indicated to Ben.
"Well, the rest will do us good." John pointed out.
""Dude, what are we going to do if those freighter men come back?" Hurley countered.
"I don't know... yet." John admitted.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Locke had chosen the safest place in the surrounding area to camp for the night, or what felt like the safest place. They had slept through the night undisturbed, except for Zoe, whom had trouble sleeping, the reaccuring nightmare she had stopped having about Ethan had returned, and she woke every time, panting in panic. The eight time of waking from the nightmare, is was early morning, the sun had already risen, and the birds were chirpping their morning song. She wasn't long fully awake for the day when John woke, looking fairly agiatated and determined. She watched on as he looked over to Hurley, who was still sleeping. Ben was already awake too.
"Hugo." Locke spoke in hushed tones.
"Mallomars." Hurley muttered back in his sleep, making Zoe chuckle slightly.
"Wake up, Hugo." John spoke a little louder.
"Hmm? Huh? What?" Hurley muttered as he stirred awake.
"Time to get up. We're gonna get going." Locke told him before going to wake Mars.
"I thought we didn't know where we're going, dude." Hurley pointed out.
"We do now." John responded defiantly.
"Hmm." Hurley responded doubtfully.
"I used to have dreams." Ben murmered sadly.
"Can I ask you somethin'?" Hurley asked John.
"Sure." John replied.
"Why am I here, man?" Hurley asked.
"You're here because you can see the cabin, and that makes you special." Locke told him simply.
"Well, I have a theory as to why we're the only ones who can see it." Hurley suggested.
"I'd love to hear it." Locke spoke kindly.
"I think we can see it 'cause we're the craziest. So how'd you figure out where it was, dude?" Hurley asked.
"I didn't. We're not going to the cabin. We're gonna make a pit stop first." Locke admitted.
"Pit stop? Where?" Hurley responded, anxious now.
"You ever wonder what happened to the DHARMA Initiative, Hugo? There must have been at least a hundred of 'em living on this island--manning the stations, building those homes, making all that ranch dressing that you like. And then one day, they're all gone. They just disappeared. You want to know where we're going? We're going to see them." John explained, himself in awe at his own words. Zoe raised an eyebrow at him, she wasn't sure she liked where this was going. They came to a sudden halt, as before them was a huge pit full of dead bodies, most of them had been reduced to skeletons now, but deteriorating clothes covered the majority of them up. Zoe looked away, she didn't handle the sight of dead bodies easily. Even Mars wrinkled her nose at them.
"Whoa. What happened to 'em?" Hurley asked, his stomach grumbling in disgust.
"He did." John told him, nodding at Ben before jumping down into the pit and searching through the bodies, before coming upon one whom wore a dharma suit with the name tag 'Horace'
"What's he doing down there?" Hurley turned to Ben, but Ben merely shrugged, he was as lost as Hurley, Zoe and Mars were with what was running through John's mind.
"So... This is where you shot Locke and left him for dead, huh?" Hurley asked, almost matter-of-factly. Zoe looked up at Ben now, she hadn't heard about this before.
"Yes, Hugo, I was standing right where you are now when I pulled the trigger. Should have realized at the time that it was pointless, but... I really wasn't thinking clearly." Ben admitted, sighing as he did. The information afterall was irrelevant at the moment. As Hurley absorbed this information, he stepped back a little.
"Is that why you killed all these people, too?" Hurley accused.
"I didn't kill them." Ben replied defensively.
"Well, if the Others didn't wipe out the DHARMA Initiative--" Hurley tried to figure out.
"They did wipe them out, Hugo, but it wasn't my decision." Ben tried to explain.
"Then whose was it?" Hurley continued to question.
"Their leader's." Ben admitted.
"But I thought you were their leader." Hurley asked, frowning and confused.
"Not always." Ben admitted again. They heard a pocked being unzipped, and the four of them peered down into the dharma grave and watched as John pulled out a parchment of paper and clamber out of the grave, with the help from Mars and Hurley. He unfolded the parchment which revealed a map.
"The cabin. He was building it." Locke explained.
"Did you find what you were looking for?" Hurley asked.
"Yes, Hugo. I believe I did." Locke replied triumphantly.
"The cabin's here. We came from over there. Up the coast." Locke spoke, pointing to significant points on the map. Hurley handed John his canteen of water.
"Here you go. Drink up, dude. Digging through dead bodies takes it out of you" Hurley spoke as John took a sip.
"It's gonna be dark soon, Hugo. If you head that way, you'll hit the coast, and all you have to do is take it north until you reach our beach." Locke explained.
"Uh, what?" Hurley asked, bewildered.
"I forced you to come with us at gunpoint, and I'm sorry, Hugo, but I was led to believe that we needed you to find this place." Locke spoke apologetically.
"Oh, I get it. Now you got your magic map, you don't--you don't need me anymore." Hurley responded, deflated and felt used.
"I'm offering you a chance to leave. I don't want to put you in harm's way against your will." Locke spoke lightly.
"And you think walking through the jungle at night by myself is gonna be any safer?" Hurley retorted.
"I'm not sure it is." Locke admitted.
"I think I'll stick with you guys. This way?" Hurley responded, before allowing for reply he began trudging through the jungle. Zoe noticed Ben giving John a significant look, which did not go un-noticed by John himself.
"What?" He asked accusingly.
"He actually thinks staying was his idea. Not bad, John. Not bad at all." Ben smiled, impressed.
"I'm not you." Locke responded defensively.
"You're certainly not." Ben agreed.
"Should be about 200 yards this way." Locke muttered and the group moved on.
"You sure it's gonna be there, John?" Ben asked.
"I'm sorry?" John replied.
"The cabin--what if it's moved again?" Ben asked.
"It hasn't moved because I was told that this is where it would be." Locke replied simply.
"I was told a lot of things, too--that I was chosen, that I was special. Ended up with a tumor on my spine and my daughter's blood all over my hands." Ben pointed out, his face falling as he mentioned his daughter.
"I'm sorry those things happened to you, Ben." John responded apologetically.
"Those things had to happen to me. That was my destiny. But you'll understand soon enough that there are consequences to being chosen... because, destiny, John, is a fickle bitch." Ben spoke wisely.
"Guys? Cabin." Hurley interrupted, and they all stopped in the tracks. The cabin was there plain in view. The atmosphere it gave off made Zoe feel uneasy, she couldn't explain why, all she knew was that she didn't like it. She took a step back and sat down, partly due to needing a rest.
"All right. Let's do this." Locke spoke as he headed toward the cabin.
"I'm not going in there with you. The island wanted me to get sick and it wanted you to get well. My time is over, John. It's yours now." Ben told him, and sat down beside Zoe.
"Yeah, I'm cool with you going in alone, too." Hurley admitted, joining Zoe and Ben, followed by Mars.
"Good luck, John." Ben called after him as John disappeared off into the cabin. Hurley removed a bar of candy from his pocket and shared it out with everyone, even Ben. Zoe took a peice greatfully and ate. She didn't realise until now just how starving she was. Only minutes later, the door creeked, and John appeared again.
"Did he tell you what we're supposed to do?" Ben asked immediately as John joined them.
"He did." John responded.
"Well?" Ben prompted.
"He wants us to move the island." John replied, slightly confused at his own response. Zoe stared. What the hell did that mean? She thought.

Day 100
Adam came running through the jungle so fast he could barely stop when he saw René. He'd been sent to the Orchid station along with Johan for the past few weeks so René was very concerned to see he had abandoned his post. "Adam what are you doing here?"
"I need Richard," he said frantically. "I need him NOW!" René yelled for Richard who was farther ahead and he came running back with Carie.
"Adam," Richard too looked very concerned now. "What are you doing here?"
"Saw a chopper come in. Carrying military. It's an assault. I left Johan at the station. On my way I heard gunfire. They somehow didn't see me, but" he paused to catch his breath. "They have Alex. Karl and Rouseau are dead." Adam got everything out while still catching his breath.
"Vanessa, Eli, Jim, Chase and Eric. Drop your things. We're leaving." They all dropped their packs and only grabbed what guns they could carry. "Adam, your coming back with us too. René, take them the rest of the way."
René knew she couldn't stay with the group, she knew after everything Jacob had put her through she had to go with him. René stepped toward Richard in rich protest pulling him off to the side. This worried Carrie. What was it that could be told to Richard and not to the rest of the group?
"Richard, I HAVE to go with you."
"You can't, you know the way best from here and are in the best position to lead them to the Temple." Richard tried to persuade her.
"You don't understand Richard." René hesitated but she had to say it. "Jacob told me I had to do this. I have to come help you. I have to help Ben." Richard looked at her half stunned. He knew she would never lie about Jacob, no matter her feelings for Ben. Without taking his eyes off her he called for Harper. She was told she would be in charge until the others got back. She looked displeased but agreed none the less.
"I promise," Carrie emphasized both words.
They all took off without reservation in full understanding of the dangers that now lay in front of them.
After traveling a ways towards the station Richard suddenly told everyone to backtrack to a different trail. They hid out for a bit when Sayid and Kate had figured out they weren't alone. Richard exposed himself. He told Sayid to stand down and remain calm. René and the others disarmed them and brought them along. The whole time Richard gathered information from Sayid and Kate about the people that came from the boat.
As they walked back to a good vantage point in the jungle Kate spoke to René. "I don't recognize you? You one of them too?" This made René laugh.
"Yes Kate, I'm one of them. I saw you at the barracks when you failed miserably to free Jack." René said.
"You mean before you gassed us and left us." René nodded her head. "Don't say much, you people, do you?"
René stopped walking for a moment and turned to Kate. "We talk a lot Kate. I just choose to not have a pow wow right now."
"Sorry." Kate said sarcastically.
"Look, you want off this Island?" Kate nodded her head, "More than anything." René continued, "Then help us with what we need. Then, if you want to sit around and drink some tea and share some crumpets, I will be more than happy to do so."
René kept moving and heard Kate as she walked away. "Great, another Juliet."
***********************************
As they made their way through the jungle they heard some crackling. They all took cover and drew their guns. Richard spoke out and stepped out from a tree. "Johan? What are you doing here?"
"They have Ben. They came to the station and knew where it was. He warned me. But they have him now, they're taking him off the Island!" Johan sounded very scared at this point. "What are they doing here?" he asked pointing to Sayid and Kate.
"They're going to help us." René said very matter of factly. She looked over at Richard and Carrie. "Make a deal Richard, this is her chance." René said as she looked at Carrie now. René never would have thought she would be telling Richard what to do, but he saw the opportunity and began talking to Kate and Sayid.
***********************************
René and everyone took various positions around the helicopter waiting for Keamy and his men to show up with Ben. They finally approached and began yelling at Lapidus as to how he got the tool box trying to uncuff himself. René saw was Jo was now at the helicopter as well with Lapidus.
"You understand what you need to do?" Richard said as Kate shook her head and ran out straight for the helicopter. The men drew their guns on her. René crouched down and could hear everything. Keamy yelled at her and she said she was being chased by Ben's people. Kate and Ben exchanged glances as she knelt down next to him. Quickly Richard, René and everyone else converged on Keamy and his men and gunfire ensued. Kate and Ben took off running in René direction and she gave them fire cover. They kept running and René saw the lead man coming after them. Sayid tackled him to the ground. She, Kate and Ben kept moving. After a few moments René heard four shots and she and everyone else emerged again to see Richard had just shot Keamy.
Ben approached Richard. "Thank you Richard."
"My pleasure." Richard tersley replied.
Kate picked up Keamy's knife and Ben asked her to cut his bonds. She looked at him awkwardly and then freed his hands.
"What was the arrangement?" Ben asked Richard.
"They help us free you, and we let them off the Island." Richard knew Ben wouldn't be completely happy with the arrangement but he had no choice at this point. René knew that.
Quickly Ben said "Fair enough. The helicopter is yours. You and Sayid have a safe journey back."
Kate was puzzled. "So we can go... off the Island? That's it?"
Ben stopped and paused for a moment before turning to her and awkwardly pausing again, "That's it."
René followed Ben back into the jungle as he began walking away. "Where are you going Ben?"
Ben looked annoyed and snapped at her. "I have to get back to the Orchid René. John needs my help."
"I'm going with you." She was determined. Eric grabbed her arm and she tossed a glare in his direction. "I'm going WITH him." She pulled her arm from him and followed Ben into the jungle.
"Ben, wait, why are you going back? I don't understand?" René walked quickly through the jungle to keep up with Ben.
"Well," he paused, "Jacob told John that he had to move the Island, to keep us all safe. Problem is, John doesn't know HOW to move the Island. I'm going back to tell him what he needs to do." Just then René's stomach sunk. She had heard various rumors since coming here that whomever moved the Island would be banished from it, never able to return. She clasped his arm with his shirt in her hand to force him to stop walking. Ben looked at her feverishly and saw how pale René's face had become.
"What is it?" he asked.
"It's your sacrifice." She shook her head, she couldn't believe this was the path Jacob had chosen for Ben. "He told me you had to make a sacrifice."
Ben's face scrunched into a sea of perplexity, "Who told you what?" René couldn't bring herself to say his name now. "Was it Richard?" René strained, the compounded anguish welled up inside her, bursting into tears.
"I can't. I can't do this." René spoke as if her heart were being ripped from her chest.
"Do what?" There was a long pause, "Jesus René, what is going on? Who told," Ben tried to ask again but René interrupted, controlling herself as much as she could in the distress of the moment.
"John's not meant to move the Island." She looked away, she couldn't look him in the eye. "You are." She breathed the words out of her forcefully, or she would never have been able to. She couldn't let go of his shirt, she held it angrily not knowing what directions to throw her emotions now that the words finally escaped her tongue. Ben's facial expressions meandered quickly from intense confusion to an awkward questionable silence to slow dieing acceptance.
"I see." He said looking at the ground. "Losing Alex wasn't enough was it?" His voice trembled saying Alex's name.
René felt herself breathing heavy with anxiety. She shook her head vigorously. "No, no, no, no. He can't, he can't ask you to do this!" They stood silently for were mere minutes, but it was an eternity to René.
"He can." Ben slowly reached for René's wrist and slowly pried it from his arm. He looked her squarely in the eye with full sincerity. He pursed his lips as if to say something but just as quickly as the words formed and could have been spoken he retracted them. He smiled that small half hearted smile that only belonged to him and acknowledged the fate Jacob had handed him. "Good bye René." He turned from her and began his ascent back to the Orchid.
Every thought known to man seemed to fill René's head at this very moment in time but the only thoughts she could comprehend was an undeniable loss, desperation, and the need to not regret anything she had ever done with her life. "BEN!" She screamed and went running after him. He stopped but didn't turn around. "I'm not letting you go without you knowing how," she paused looking for the right words unable to formulate them, "how I feel, I can't,"
"I know." He said with ease. It just rolled off his tongue without a moment of hesitation. "I know." He turned his head a half glance and paused. The jungle was silent. "Good bye." He continued on, never looking back.
She half whispered "Good bye," knowing he could hear her, knowing it would truly never be. She refused to regret falling in love with a man she could not have and having to let him go. A heavy rain began to pour down on her drowning out the footsteps she could hear as he left her there. She knelt into the lush thickness of the wet jungle and silently wept her loss.
René had no idea how much time had passed when she heard approaching foot steps. "René?" She recognized the voice. "René are you alright?" John ran up to her and handed over some of his water not knowing why she was there alone. Zoe was close behind him. She kept her distance to just observe John and René.
"He's gone now...isn't he?" She was pale. She didn't want to accept it, but seeing John only cemented the fact. He sat down beside her. She looked up at him, her eyes red from crying. He nodded his head.
"I know," John struggled to find the right words to comfort her. "I don't know what to say actually." John half laughed in his embarrassment and looked up at Zoe. She just shook her head.
"I'm sorry it happened this way René. Jacob asked me to move the Island, but never told me how. Ben, he,"
"It's ok John." René interrupted and looked him in the eye now. "Jacob makes the rules, not us." René stood up and wiped her eyes and took a deep breath. "Come on, I'll show you the rest of the way." John stood up and the three of them walked until reaching Richard and the others.
Eric ran up to René and hugged her tight. "I thought I wouldn't see you again." René looked blankly at him and didn't say a word. "What is it?" He asked.
"I'll tell you another time." René walked away from him and went and sit by the lean-to. "Welcome home." She heard Richard say to John. There was some talk between Zoe and Richard but René didn't pay attention. She had never wished more for a stiff drink than at that moment to forget everything.
Everyone had gathered around and listened as Richard and John talked. René saw Eric looking over his shoulder every five minutes checking on her. She was slightly annoyed by it, but understood his concerned actions at the same time. As they spoke a low noise began to grow and it began to deafen everyone. As the sound built everyone began looking at each other for answers. And just as soon as John Locke had come to them, to lead them, he just as quickly disappeared into thin air right before their eyes. No one moved, overwhelming feelings of astonishment traversed over everyone.
"Where's Zoe?" René realized she was gone too.

Day 100
"So when is someone gonna tell me where we're going?" Hurley asked as the group had been walking relentlessly through the jungle again, walking out into the bright sunlight of a meadow.
"We're going to a place called the Orchid, Hugo." Ben explained.
"And what's that?" Hurley asked.
"It's a greenhouse." Ben replied simply.
"And why are we going to a greenhouse exactly?" Hurley asked unsatisfied.
"You heard John. We're going to move the island." Ben contimued.
"Right. And how are we gonna do that?" Hurley pondered.
"Very carefully." Ben replied seriously.
"Well, if you could move the island whenever you wanted, why didn't you just move it before the psychos with guns got here?" Hurley accused.
BEN: Because doing it is both dangerous and unpredictable. It's a measure of last resort." Ben explained, continuing to use his serious tones.
"Awesome." Hurley replied sarcastically. They came to a stop and Ben started moving a pile of rocks, revealing a wooden box. Upon going to open it, Locke stood on it authoritively.
"Allow me." John spoke instructively. Zoe rolled her eyes at his possessive behaviour. The box rattled as John opened it, he chucked a packet of something to Hurley, who opened it immediately and began eating the contents of saltine crackers.
"May I have that mirror, please?" Ben asked polietly. Locke handed him the mirror obligingly.
"You know, those are 15 years old." Ben spoke matter-of-factly to Hurley to paused, and Zoe wrinkled her nose at the cringing thought. Ben positioned himself towards the mountain peek ahead of them covered by trees, the sun in the perfect position for him to send signals.
"What are you doing, Dude?" Hurley asked, bemused.
"Communicating." Ben replied simply
"Communicating with who?" Hurley persisted.
"Who do you think? All right. Now we can go." Ben finished, and he continued their path of journey.
"Wait. What was that? What did you tell them?" John demanded
"None of your business, John." Ben replied flatly.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Okay, let's say this greenhouse place does what you say, and, yeah, I get it. It's really dangerous and unpredictable. But suppose somehow it works, and we move the island. Doesn't that mean the dudes with guns move, too?" Hurley inquired as they were just mere paces away from the Orchid station, crouched low, John was using the binoculars to peer ahead, Zoe tried to see straight ahead with just her plain eyes, but could hardly see anything.
"Yes, I suppose they would." Ben admitted.
"Well, isn't that, you know, a problem?" Hurley asked.
"I'm working on it." Ben replied, grinding his teeth.
"Well, what about me? I still wanna get off it!" Hurley protested.
"I'm afraid it's a little late for that, Hugo." John apologised over birds chirpping in the distance. Zoe shifted into a more comfortable position whilst Mars checked her gun was readily loaded.
"May I have the binoculars, please? You might wanna get down lower to the ground." Ben spoke to John.
"And why might we wanna do that?" John challenged.
"Because we're at the Orchid." Ben replied.
"What are we waitin' for?" John asked.
"We're waiting, John, because Charles Widmore," Ben explained. Another chill was sent up Zoe's spine at the mention of Widmore's name again, "the man who's trying to capture me and kill all the rest of you, knows about this place and knows that what we need is inside."
"I thought you said you had no idea why he was trying to find he island." John sighed.
"I wasn't being entirely truthful." Ben admitted.
"Yeah. When are you ever entirely truthful?" John scoffed.
"You need to see this." Ben ignored, handing John the binoculars, which John took immediately and looked through them in the direction Ben was pointing.
"What am I looking for?" John asked.
"Look over there on the left-hand side. Watch the plants at the back." Ben ordered.
"I don't see any--" John started, but as he spoke, he spotted them. Mercenaries patrolling the Orchid, heavily weaponed.
"They're already here." Ben explained.
"I see two of them, but not the one who killed Alex." John said defeatedly.
"He's there." Ben confirmed. "Hold on to that for me, will you?" He asked, handing John his gun.
"What?" John asked bewildered as Ben stood up to leave.
"Listen to me very carefully, John, because I'm not gonna have time to repeat this. You're gonna go into that greenhouse through that hole there. Once inside, you're gonna turn left. Go about 20 paces until you see a patch of anthuriums on your left. They're in an alcove against the north wall. Face the wall, reach down with your left hand. You'll find a switch that activates the elevator. The elevator takes you down to the actual Orchid station." Ben explained, talking rapidly, even Zoe had trouble keeping up with his instructions.
"Whoa. Wait. What?" Hurley stammered, showing he was struggling to keep up too.
"Okay, I'm sorry, Ben, but maybe I missed the part where you explained what I'm supposed to do about the armed men inside." John asked calmly.
"I'm gonna take care of them."2 Ben responded grimely.
"And how the hell are you gonna do that?" John asked unconvinced.
"How many times do I have to tell you, John? I always have a plan." Ben spoke, wide eyed and confident. Before he could get any decent form of response, Ben walked away from them through the trees, directly to the Orchid station.
"Ben!" John whispered as loud as he could after him, but Ben ignored him, so he brought is tone level to his normal voice. "Ben!" He spoke, but still, Ben continued. The four of them froze on the spot as they heard a rifle cock and aimed at Ben as he walked into the open space, hands in the air, and approached Keamy.
"My name is Benjamin Linus. I believe you're looking for me." Ben spoke, as polietly, but as seriously and determined as ever. Keamy pointed his gun at Ben's forhead immediately and momentarily before striking him without warning over the head, causing Ben to collapse. The action made Zoe jump, and she cringed, she could almost feel how much that would have hurt.
"If Ben planned on turning himself in, why didn't he do that back at the barracks?" Zoe whispered allowed, shaking her head.

Day 100
Carrie leant against the helicopter, her hand resting protectively on her stomach, while Sayid paced around and Kate attempted to free Lapidus' handcuffs. They all looked up as Hurley entered. "Sayid!" He called. "Kate!" He came towards them and embraced Sayid. "Good to see you, Dude."
Hurley was followed by Sawyer, then Jack.
Spotting Carrie, Sawyer said, "whoa, what's Tinkerbell doing here?"
"She's coming with us," Kate said.
"Why?"
"Because I have to," Carrie shrugged, as if it were all the explanation needed. Sawyer went over to a dead solider and poked him with his gun.
"He say something to tick you off, Freckles?" He said.
"Didn't kill that one," Kate replied.
"Well, which one did you kill?"
Kate smiled, and went over to Jack as they began having a hushed conversation. Sawyer, meanwhile, went over to Lapidus and critisized his attempt to pick the lock on his handcuffs. Carrie watched Sawyer using the hacksaw on Lapidus' handcuffs, while Jack questioned Sayid about the freighter.
"All right!" Lapidus yelled excitedly as his cuffs were finally released. "Let's get the hell outta here!"
Carrie reluctantly climbed into the helicopter. Hurley sat opposite her, and Jack climbed in next to him. Hurley noticed how sad Carrie looked, and gave her a smile to try and cheer her up, which she returned only half-heartedly. Kate climbed in next to Carrie, and Sawyer next to Kate.
"Hands and feet inside the vehicle," Lapidus said, evidently glad to get off the Island. "Let's go for a ride!"
The helicopter made it's way up and above the Island. Carrie clung onto a handlebar on the side of the helicopter as she sadly watched the jungles get smaller. She was awestruck by the beauty of it, but also saddened by the fact it was the last time she'd see the views and the only time she'd realised how beautiful it was. She looked in the direction of the camp. She couldn't see it properly because the jungle was in the way, but her heart was bursting at the fact Richard was there, but she was here and couldn't reach him.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"What?" Jack shouted back at Lapidus, who had evidently said something inaudible.
"We're losing fuel!" Lapidus shouted back. "Look outside, tell me if you can see anything!"
The wind hit Carrie's face worse than before, as she poked her head out of the helicopter to look at the exterior. She deemed nothing was there, so she drew herself back in. Jack and Lapidus started having a shouted debate about whether to go back to the Island or keep looking for the freighter.
"We gotta get every ounce of extra weight off this chopper now!" Lapidus shouted to the group as a whole. "Anything that's not bolted down, toss it out!"
Carrie picked up a large box that was under her feet and threw it out ther window, as everyone else threw out various items they found. She saw Hurley reluctantly pull an Apollo bar out of his pocket and throw it into the sea. Taking his idea, Carrie searched her pockets. She found a handful of random items in the front pockets of her trousers, and threw them into the sea. In her back pocket, she found a folded-up picture of her and Richard she hadn't realised was there. She slid it in her red file. No way was she going to let go of it.
Now what?" Jack yelled. "Is that enough? Can we make it?!"
"I'd feel a hell of a lot better if we were a few hundred pounds lighter!" Lapidus shouted back. "Well, if we don't make it, we're still close enough to ditch it on the beach."
"Hey! Do not go back to the Island!" Jack shouted determindely. Carrie didn't know if she wanted the chopper to land back on the Island or not. She wanted it to so she'd have an excuse to go back to Richard, but she didn't want it to because she knew she might not get another chance to survive.
Sawyer turned to Kate. "Hey..." he said, before whispering something in her ear.
"Why are you telling me this?" Kate asked, clearly concerned. Sawyer didn't reply, but instead he kissed her.
"Just do it, Freckles," he said, before jumping from the helicopter.
"Sawyer!" Kate exclaimed. Kate, Carrie, Hurley, Jack, Sayid and Lapidus all watched as Sawyer fell into the water. They waited in suspense for a few moments, before he resurfaced.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
With one hand Carrie clung to the handlebar, and with the other she held her file close to her chest. "Hey Dude," Hurley said to her as Sayid and Lapidus had a conversation about the constant fuel loss. "What's in that thing?" He indicated Carrie's file.
"My life," Carrie replied simply. "Or what's left of it."
"How long were you on that Island?" Hurley asked incredulously.
"Five years," Carrie replied. "Seems like nothing now."
"Hey!" Hurley shouted to the group as a whole. "There it is! The boat! I see it! Behind us!"
Carrie looked out the helicopter, and realised he was right. Lapidus quickly turned the helicopter around and began flying towards it. Dread swarmed over Carrie - she'd hoped they wouldn't be able to leave.
As they neared the freighter, Desmond ran out and started waving his arms at them, shouting something desperately.
"Did he say bomb?" Jack shouted.
Lapidus landed anyway, as he was dangerously low on fuel. Everyone piled off, and started working on patching up the hole and filling the helicopter with fuel. Carrie noticed Sun turning to run back inside.
"Sun!" Carrie called, running up to her. "We have to go now!"
"Jin's below with Michael," Sun replied desperately, "I can't-"
"No time!" Carrie replied quickly. "We have to go now, that's bomb's gonna blow!"
"I won't leave him!" Sun said stubbornly. Carrie relented - she knew how Sun felt. She wasn't going to let someone else be split from someone they love.
"Fine, get Aaron on the 'copter, I'll get Jin." Carrie went to run into the interior of the freighter, but Hurley stopped her.
"Dude, we gotta go," he said urgently.
"Jin and Michael are still in there," Carrie replied just as urgently. "We gotta get them!"
Hurley hesitated, also reluctant to leave Jin and Michael to perish. "Hurley, Carrie, COME ON!" Jack yelled from the helicopter. They both quickly yet reluctantly ran back to the helicopter and climbed on, followed by Jack.
Desmond shouted something as the helicopter, as Sun asked urgently for Jin. Before Carrie had time to reply, Jin himself ran out of the interior and shouted something in Korean.
"It's Jin!" Sun yelled. "No! Jin! Jin! Jin! We have to go back! Turn around!"
"We can't do it!" Lapidus refused.
We have to!" She screamed. "We need to go back!"
Suddenly, there was a large explosion as the freighter blew up. Sun screamed for Jin, and Sayid and Hurley tried to restrain her from jumping off the helicopter, which she seemed to be trying to do.
Desmond, meanwhile, buried his head in his hands. "Is Jo okay?" He asked.
Carrie realised he was speaking to her, as everyone else was concentrating on Sun. "I don't know," she said honestly. "I haven't seen her in weeks."
Desmond frowned. "Are you one of them, Sista?" He asked. "A Hostile?"
"No-one's called us that since before I came," Carrie replied. "But yes. I am."
"Lapidus!" Jack shouted. "Fly us back to the Island!"
"You got it," Lapidus replied. Sun shrieked for Jin further, until eventually she settled back. Carrie's comforting side kicked in, and she put her arm around Sun to comfort her as she cried.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Carrie looked around in confusion as a low, rumbling noise grew all around them.
"What is that?" Desmond asked.
After a few moments, a bright white light grew from the Island. Everyone looked around, confused, as the light got so bright it was impossible to see anything else. Carrie shielded her eyes. After a few moments, the light got dimmer and eventually vanished. There was a splashing noise in the direction of the Island. She looked out, and gaped as she looked out at the water. The Island was gone. "Richard!" She exclaimed. She couldn't hear Lapidus shouting about loss of Island and fuel. All she could hear was the whirring of the helicopter and her own pulse, as realisation sunk in that they weren't going to get back now. They were leaving, and there was no chance of finding the Island.
"Get your life vests on!" Lapidus yelled. "We're going in! Brace yourselves!"
Carrie grabbed her life jacket and quickly put it on. She realised she was using both hands, and looked around for the file. She spotted it on the floor, under someone's foot - there was too much going on for Carrie to be able to tell whose foot it was. The person moved, and accidentally kicked the file aside. Carrie grabbed it before it could fall off the helicopter. A smaller, looser piece of paper fell out of the file and into the water. "NO!" Carrie screamed, as she realised it was her picture. She carefully slid the file between her body and her life jacket, doing her best to keep it dry as they fell.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Where's Carrie?" Sun asked, as Jack and Lapidus heaved Desmond onto the boat. Everyone looked around, but Carrie was nowhere to be seen.
"Anyone here know CPR?" Jack asked urgently.
"Me, I do," Kate said.
"Okay, you perform it on Desmond," Jack said quickly, pulling his top off. "I'll be back in a minute."
"Wait, where are you going?" Kate asked.
"I'm going to find Carrie," Jack replied, jumping into the water. He looked around under the dark water, and after a few moments he spotted a figure. He swam towards it, and realised as he closed in that it was Carrie. She'd landed below a large part of the helicopter, unable to get above the water in time. Jack swam towards her and grabbed her around the waist, before swimming back where he'd come from and surfacing as soon as he could. He got a good grip on her under her arms, and took her back to the boat. He was glad to see Kate had successfully revived Desmond, who helped Jack pull Carrie back onto the boat. Jack quickly pulled Carrie's life jacket off, frowning as he discovered her red file was tucked under there. He put it aside on her life jacket, not noticing as Kate picked it up and curiously opened it. Jack began chest compressions and mouth-to-mouth resusitation, and after a minute Carrie regained consciousness, coughing up water.
"It's okay," Jack panted, sitting back out of exhaustion. "It's okay. We're alive."
