Days and Nights on the beach
René found herself unable to sleep. She decided staying in her tent wasn't worth it and got up. As she exited and pulled back her flaps she saw Richard in the distance looking confused and beginning to go in towards the jungle. René, being curious, and decidedly concerned over the look on Richard's face, began to follow. As she got closer she heard him talking, but she knew it wasn't to her. Richard had no idea René was closing in on him.
"Carrie?" Richard said.
She couldn't believe her eyes, René figured she had to still be asleep. But she saw exactly the same thing Richard did. René continued to follow Richard as he followed Carrie without hesitation. They ended up near one of the waterfalls. René knew Richard held this place close to his heart, he'd briefly spoken of it once to her.
She heard Richard again, "Carrie, what are you-?" but he stopped when she turned around.
"Not yet," she said simply. René's head spun trying to figure it all out. She saw as he reached his arm forward, and gently placed his hand on her stomach. He placed his hands on her waist and Carrie leaned forward and whispered in his ear, but what it was, René would have to find out later, becasue in the instant she looked down to just grasp her mind on what was going on, the moment she looked back up Carrie was gone.
René gathered up the courage to expose herself. "Richard, what the hell was that?" Her voice shook as the words came out. Richard, unsurprised by her presence just stood there shaking his head.
"You saw her, you just saw Carrie, right?" He asked and René reassured him she did in fact just experience the exact same thing he did.
"Richard," she walked closer to him over looking the waterfall and pool. "What did she say? She whispered something to you, what was it?"
"She said," he paused with frustration, "watch the sky."
"What does that mean?" René just laughed, a full gut wrenching giggle of pure frustration. "What, the HELL, is wrong with this Island?" She shook her hands exasperatingly into the air. "Can we get no straight answers, ever?!" After a long pause and heavy sigh René looked back at Richard again. "You ok?"
"Yeah, yeah." He took a few steps back and then turned around. "Come on, let's get back to the beach."

Late 1954Zoe had been trekking through the jungle after another flash had sent them into another unknown timezone. "Where are we going?" Zoe asked John. "To see if we can find any of our friends." John replied. "And then we need to find Richard." It was dark, and Zoe felt uneasy travelling through the jungle at night, especially when they were unsure where and when they were. Ethan could be out there again as well as the many other horrific monsters. Zoe shuddered at the thought of Ethan, and she knew instantly the nightmares were never going to disappear now. Her face had gone back to being pale now, she was frightened. "How are we supposed to find them? With no concrete trails. We don't know when the next flash will be." Zoe questioned. "We better hope we find them before it does then." Locke responded unhelpfully as the continued through the jungle. They had only advanced five more minutes through the jungle when Locke stopped suddenly, and Zoe instinctively listened. She could hear desperate cries in the distance, and a harsh, authorative voice. She immediately picked out Sawyer's voice. "Sawyer!" Zoe whispered. Locke gave her a piercing look, indicating her to be quiet. It was clear from his shouts, combined with pleading screams of a woman - Juliet? And the sharp orders of a stranger, that they were in trouble. Before Locke could stop her, Zoe ran through the jungle towards the commotion. She wasn't going to let more blood shed. She couldn't handle it. She ran into the clearing, and gasped in horror as she saw two men with a firm hold of Juliet, her arm held out forcibly as another stranger prepared to chop it clean off. To her surprise, Jo was there too, but she was being held up at gunpoint too. Another man held a gun threateningly at Sawyer, and Zoe lurched herself in his path between Sawyer and himself protectively before she thought of what she was doing. She met his cold, dark eyes, and she looked him up and down, she noticed a label on the clothes he wore, identifying him as 'Jones'. "Leave them alone!" Zoe hissed threateningly at the stranger. "Step aside silly girl, I have enough bullets to kill all four of you." Jones mocked, smiling smugly. "Five." Zoe spat back. Jones went to look all around him, but Zoe clicked her fingers at him, distracting him. "Do you really want to be responsible for killing an innocent child?!" She demmanded to know, pointing her finger at her stomach. "This baby has already lost its father. A caring, noble man. You going to kill its mother too, and himself? He doesn't deserve that." Jones looked lost for words, he was thinking, and trying to think fast. Zoe had noticed the two other men were named Cunningham and Mattingly. Mattingly was preparing to chop Juliet's hand off, while Cunningham was holding it down. Before he could reply, or his two men react, still waiting for Jones to give the command to go ahead with hurting Juliet, stones whistled through the air, knocking Jones and Mattingly over. Juliet reacted instinctively, grabbing Mattingly's gun and hitting Cunningham with it, causing him to stumble backwards. Meanwhile, the man holding hsis aim at Jo was distracted, and Jo skillfully kicked his wrist and his gun flew across the jungle floor, rendering him weaponless. Zoe grabbed the gun and threw it back at Jo, and she caught it greatfully, and held her aim at her original captor. Mattingly kept a firm hold of his gun and got back to his feet, and launched himself towards Sawyer. "No!" Zoe screamed in defiance, but before Mattingly could cause any real injury to Sawyer, a knife whistled through the air, narrowly missing Zoe and hit Mattingly in the back, killing him instantly. Sawyer grabbed at Jones's gun, and Juliet aimed hers at Cunningham has Sawyer aimed his at Jones, the men both surrended, but were looking wildly around them for the source of the culprit who had just killed their friend. John Locke stepped into the clearing and retrieved his knife. **** 1977 Zoe was curled in a tight ball, Charlie in her arms when she woke up. She panically checked him over, but like she was assured, he was safe, and unharmed. Zoe exhaled a sigh of relief. She had crashed not too far from a flowing stream or river, and she heard voices. She instantly picked out Jack's and Kate's. She held Charlie close to her chest and walked towards the noise. To some stoke of luck, she found her large backpack and baby satchel along the way.
"It's about time." She muttered under her breath, referring to things going well for once. "Better not rely on that too much though." Zoe had to stumble slightly down a steep slope, and found Jack checking Kate's forehead, which appeared to have some sort of injury, as it was bleeding slightly.
"Jack! Kate!" Zoe shouted to them, and they looked up at her as she had shouted to them, announcing her presence. "Are you ok?"
"We're fine." Kate shouted back, and Zoe came level to them.
"Have you seen anyone else?" Zoe asked aanxiously, talking in her normal tones. "Hurley...Sun...Ben...Sayid?" Jack and Kate looked at each other for a moment, a familiar spark that Zoe could always detect when they looked at each other. They turned back to face her.
"No." They replied in unison. **** Late 1954The dead body of Mattingly laid on the ground of the jungle. John and Jo had their guns aimed at Jones, Cunningham and the man who had threatened Jo, had been forced to kneel on their knees with their hands on the backs of their heads. Sawyer paced behind the captors with Mattingly's machete. Juliet looked over them with her arms folded while Zoe sat beside Locke on a log, his hand to his mouth in contemplation as he looks at the captured men. Zoe watched with intrigue, she had no idea who these men were, she didn't recognise them from the Others, and it appeared Juliet didn't either. But they didn't know what time they were in, so this could be either way before, or way after their time on the island. "Who are these people?" Locke asked the obvious question "Well, gee, I didn't have time to ask that, with Frogurt on fire and all." Sawyer muttered sarcastically, as he continued to pace up and down behind the captors impaiently. "They attacked us on the beach." Juliet explained more helpfully. Locke studied the rifle he had snitched off Jones. "This is a 30-caliber M1 Garand rifle. It looks new." He commented. "Who cares about the rifle? Where the hell you two been?" Sawyer demmanded. Zoe's face paled incredibly instantly as her mind wondered to answer Sawyer's question. Before she could even try to reply, Locke answered it. "If you've been going through what I have, James, maybe the more appropriate question would be, when the hell have I been?" Locke replied. "What happened to your leg?" Sawyer began to question. "I got shot." Locke explained simply. "By who?" "We can swap stories later. We told the rest of our group that we would meet them at the creek. If there's any chance of reconnecting with them, we'd better get moving." Juliet reminded them before John or Zoe could answer Sawyer's question. Sawyer seemed to notice Zoe's sudden look of distress, and mistook her fear. "Fine, seeing as we have no rope to make sure these two don't try to kill us again. Guess we're gonna have to shoot 'em." Sawyer concluded. "Quare non sunt vestitus eis?" Cunningham whispered to Jones. Zoe recognised the language immediately. Latin. She had learnt it years back during her years at boarding school in England. 'Why aren't they in uniform?'"Tace!" Jones ordered forcibly back. 'Shut up!' Sawyer hit Jones at the back of his neck. "What?" He snapped, his tone so savage it made Zoe flinch as she wasn't apying much attention to him. Locke stood up and took a step closer to the three captors while Zoe remained, still, where she was, she shivered slightly, for some reason sensing a significant darft of icy ambience. "Cognoscitis qui sumus?" Juliet responded to the two of the captors attempt to try and speak in secrecy. Zoe smiled. It came as no surprise to her that Juliet would no Latin. It must be a trait required by the Others, Zoe theorized. "What language is that?" Sawyer inquired. "They're speaking Latin. That one asked why we aren't in uniform, and this one told him to shut up." Juliet explained in her usual casual, calm an aloof voice. "And how is it that they know how to speak Latin, Juliet?" Locke asked, hinting almost as if to accuse her of something. "The same reason I do. Because they're Others." Juliet replied noncholant. Zoe noticed Jones swallow. **** In the jungle, Locke and Jo walked from behind, both carring guns. John was fiddling with the compass Richard had given him, flipping it over in his hand. In front were the three captured Hostiles, their hands clasped firmly on the back of their heads, which made Zoe a little nervous. It was too easy for them to run, they should have got some vines and used them as rope to tie their hands behind their back. But Zoe was too distanced to say anything. She walked in front along with Juliet and Sawyer. "So who taught you Latin?" Sawyer asked. "Others 101. Gotta learn Latin--language of the enlightened." Juliet explained. "Enlightened, my ass." Sawyer smiled. He stole a sideways glance at Zoe. "Are you ok? You look awfully pale. What's wrong?" He asked with a genunine concerned voice. "I..." Zoe mumbled. "Nothing, I just...nothing." Zoe stuttered. "I suggest you talk to us. Once we get back to the creek and meet up with the rest of our people, there's gonna be a lot of anger directed at you for attacking them." Locke spoke to Cunningham. Sawyer eyed Zoe up and down, and was not convinced by her reply. He allowed Juliet to carry on the lead and took a firm but comforting hand on Zoe's shoulder and took her to one side. "The rest of your people are either captured or dead." Cunningham replied in an American accent. "What?" Locke asked in dismay, stopping Cunningham from walking. "What makes you say that?" Everyone stopped walking now, although Sawyer and Zoe were a little way behind, Sawyer consoulling her. "Something is wrong, Zoe. You're as white as a sheet, and you're shiverring, but you're not cold." Sawyer interjected, feeling Zoe's forehead, which was more hot then cold. "Tell me what's up." "Ethan." Zoe barely whispered. "What?" Sawyer asked, and he sat Zoe down, and sat down beside her himself. "Ethan." Zoe repeated, a little louder this time, but it was still a whisper. "What about him?" Sawyer asked gently, frowning slightly. He was dead. What could he possibly do? "I saw him...before...in the jungle. He had a gun. He was going to kill me." Zoe spoke quietly, another shudder rippled through her body, her voice slightly trembling as she recalled the event. Sawyer embraced her in a supportive hug. "It's ok." He spoke softly, and reassuringly. "He's gone. It was just a temporary flash through time." "But what if he comes back?" Zoe whispered fearfully. "What if we jump back to a time when he's alive? I thought I was safe..." "Well I'm here now. I will protect you. I won't let anyone harm you." Sawyer promised warmly. "You and the baby." Zoe twitched a smile gratefully, but was not confident enough yet to speak, but Sawyer could read her face, telling him that she was happy for what he offered her. Meanwhile, Locke, Juliet and the captives were arguing. "...That idiot shouted out, "Meet at the creek." We knew exactly where they were going. We sent a group after them." Cunningham accused mockingly, referring to Sawyer as he explained to Locke exactly why the rest of their friends were either dead of captured. Jones and the other, name unknown captive, both turned and glared angrily at Cunningham. Sawyer had obviously heard Cunningham referring to him, so he jibbed back them . "Well, maybe I should've said it in my secret language." He huffed sarcastically. Juliet walked up to Cunningham confidently, but Locke tried to stop her, putting a hand on her, assuming she was about to go and attack them, but she stopped and started to speak in Latin, and Zoe translated in her head what was being said. "Nos non sumus hostes vobis." Juliet spoke furiously, yet her tone still appeared calm, but the anger in the way she spoke was clear. We are not your enemy. Zoe translated in her mind. CUNNINGHAM: "Itaque nos liberate." Cunningham replied shorly. Then let us go."What the hell are you sayin'?" Sawyer was growing impaient now. "Juliet is trying to explain we aren't the bad guys, and Cunningham wants us to let us go." Zoe explained to Saywer. Sawyer gave her a quizzical look. "You know Latin too?" He asked. "Yeah. Learnt it at boarding school." Zoe explained. Juliet continued her conversation with the captive. "Duce nos ad vestra castra." She requested polietly. Take us to your camp"Take us to your camp." Zoe murmered to Sawyer quietly just so he could hear. "Si placet." Juliet added. "Please." Zoe continued quietly. "Quare hoc faciam?" Cunningham asked. "Why would I do that?" Zoe translated. "Estne... Ricardus ibi?" Juliet asked. Is Richard there?""Ricardus Alpert?" Juliet repeated, looking over at Jones. "Did you just say "Richard Alpert"?" Locke interrupted before Zoe could translate. "John, please." Juliet sighed impaiently, so Zoe translated, Juliet continued in Latin, her voice remaining calm. "Duce nos ad vestra castra. Non necesse est alium mori. Si placet. Bring us to your camp. No one else has to die. Please."All right. Okay, we need to head east another couple of kilometers until we hit the ridge--" Cunningham began to explain, this time in English, but before he could say anymore, Jones launched himself at Cunningham, grabbing him by the head and twisted his head, snapping it instantly. Cunningham's body fell limp to the ground, motionless. He was dead. Zoe gasped in horror, clasping her hand over her mouth as Jones turned and fled into the jungle. Sawyer comforted her. "Shoot him!" Sawyer ordered to Locke who was lifting his rifle and aiming at Jones, but hesistated, reluctant to shoot. He then lowered his weapon. "Shoot, damn it!" Sawyer shouted. Sawyer rolled his eyes, and steped forward, yanking the rifle away from Locke and took aim and fireed. Jones hopped a bit, and continued running. None of them could tell if he was hit or not. "Are you crazy?! What were you thinking? Why didn't you shoot him?!" Sawyer snapped. "Because... he's one of my people." Locke spoke calmly, with almost pride in his voice.

More Ajira-ness, why not
Carrie jolted awake as the taxi pulled to a stop. It had taken over 5 hours to get to Los Angeles, having had to get a flight to a different LA airport, then get a taxi from there to LAX. She quickly paid the driver the money owed, and, grabbing her suitcase, made her way into the airport.
While in the airport, she was surprised to see all the Oceanic survivors, save Sayid, at various points. She was extra shocked, when she reached the point at which her luggage was scanned, to see Zoe and her son at the scanner next to her. Carrie hadn't even been aware Zoe had left the Island. They locked eyes for a moment, Carrie wondering why Zoe was bringing her child, Zoe no doubt wondering why Carrie wasn't.
At the waiting area, Carrie saw Jack at a desk, looking nervous as he spoke to the man behind the desk. She saw, in the distance, Kate without Aaron. Hurley, at a seperate waiting area, rushed towards a desk urgently. Sayid passed through a door at the edge, handcuffed. Sun passed through the crowds on the opposite side of the room.
"The whole gang's back together." A familiar English accent spoke from besides Carrie. She looked over, and was surprised to see Zoe had sat by her, Charlie sleeping on her lap. "There's nowhere else to sit," she explained in answer to the questioning look Carrie gave her.
"We're all in one of the world's largest airports," Carrie replied. "Doesn't make us 'back together'."
Zoe noticed Charlie had started chewing on his shirt, and busied herself trying to pull it out of his mouth, just as I Made It Through The Rain started to issue from Carrie's phone. She wasn't surprised to read the Caller ID to say Dad. She sighed, and hit the accept button, putting the phone to her ear. "What?"
"You know what," her dad replied. "You shouldn't do this. Abandoning your daughter to be with someone you love? It's ridiculous, Carolyna."
Carrie was rather surprised. Her dad never used her full name. "Really? Because I seem to recall someone doing that 24 years ago."
"Exactly. I don't want you to make the same mistake I did."
"Mistake?" Carrie laughed. "I wonder what it would have been like if you'd stayed with Mum instead of Lorlai?"
"It would have been harder on me," he admitted, "but it would have been so much easier on you."
"But I was okay, Dad," Carrie replied comfortingly. "Really, I was. And you leaving all led up to where I am today. If you'd been there to stop Mum forcing me to go to university, I'd have never have become a Psychologist, I'd never had gone to the Island, I would never have met Richard - not to mention I wouldn't have had Lynette."
Her dad paused. "Lorlai and Lynette are going after you," he said. "And if you get on that plane, they will too. We're not letting you leave her."
"No!" Carrie exclaimed, frightened. Several people looked around, but lost interest when they realised she was on the phone and it wasn't some dramatic leaving-at-the-airport scene. "No, Dad!"
"Too late," her dad replied. "They're gonna be there in 10 minutes. They weren't far behind you."
"No, no, Dad, really, she can't come!" Carrie stood up as she began to panic. She paced back and forth to calm herself, having completely forgotten Zoe was there.
"Why are you so desperate to go, Carrie?" He asked seriously. "And why are you so determined not to bring Lynette? I think I know a thing or two-"
"You don't," Carrie cut across him. "You have no clue, Dad, you think you do, but you really don't. It's too dangerous, she's only a child!"
"I'm not letting you leave," her dad said, before hanging up the phone. Carrie swore, wondering what to do. She looked around the airport in some hope of inspiration. She was relieved to see Charles Widmore looking suspiscous as he left a sideroom. Her relief overcame any wonderment she might have of what he was doing there. Richard had told her about him, she knew he had some sort of power over LAX. She dashed over to him.
"Mr Widmore," she said. "I need your help."
Widmore frowned. "Who are you?"
"My name's Carolyna Copeland," she explained. She looked around, before saying in a low voice, "I'm one of your people."
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Carrie was sat in a private sideroom, which contained three things: a desk, and a chair either side, her and Widmore occupying them both. Widmore was looking at her in a searching way, wondering whether or not to believe her story. She'd explained briefly her history with the Island, including her relationship with Richard, and why she'd left. As much as she disliked Ben, she knew if she told Widmore she was going to the Island, things would get complicated.
"Say I believe your story, Miss Copeland-"
"Doctor Copeland," Carrie corrected him automatically.
Widmore nodded his head slightly in recognition of her PhD. "Well then, Doctor Copeland, say I believe you ... why do you need my help?"
"I'm going somewhere," Carrie said seriously, leaning forwards. "Somewhere dangerous. But my dad, he's trying to stop me. My step-mum and daughter are coming now, they're gonna try and come with me. But I can't let them. Please, Mr Widmore, can you do something, anything, to stop them getting on that plane?"
Widmore sat back, considering Carrie's request. "Why should I do this?"
"Two reasons," she replied confidently, sitting up fully. "First, I'm one of your people. You may not be on the Island anymore, but you still have a duty to help others. Second," she paused. "My daughter, Lynette ... Richard's her father. I promised him I'd keep her safe. If you don't do this for me, at least do it for him."
Widmore thought for a moment. "Very well," he said. "Your step-mother and your daughter ... what are their full names?"
"Lorlai Copeland," Carrie replied, "and Lynette Alpert."
Widmore raised his eyebrows as he wrote down the names. "They allowed you to give your daughter Richard's surname? He's not on their records."
"She was Copeland at first," Carrie shrugged, "but I changed it to Alpert."
Widmore summoned someone and murmured instructions to them, and handed them the paper contaning the two names.
"Thank you," Carrie said, standing to leave.
"Say hello to Richard for me," he said as she left.

Late 1954
Locke and Juliet followed Jones's trail, sure that it would lead them to his camp, and to his camp it did. From the cover of palm fronds above the valley, Locke, shaded his eyes with his hands to scope out the situation. Juliet, Jo and Mars joined him while Zoe hung back, talking to Sawyer.
"Yes, they are all down there, but I still don't think it's a good idea for you to go down there." Sawyer spoke anxiously. "You could get hurt, and considering your condition, you shouldn't risk that."
"I'm not ill Sawyer, I'm pregnnt." Zoe replied stubbornly. "Besides, I need to find out how to leave this island, Sawyer. For the baby's sake, ironically to your reason from preventing me." Saywer sighed. He knew it was useless trying to persuade her, there had been many circumstances before when Zoe had her mind set on something, and nothing would stop her from doing whatever it was that could have been a danger to her. There was a pause in their conversation.
"I wish you wouldn't leave." Sawyer suddenly admitted. Zoe tilted her head curiously.
"I have to." She replied finally. "If I could, I would stay."
"Well, we better go see what's going on then." Sawyer concluded, brushing past her to Locke's side, Zoe had trouble reading his face. Was it disappointment? She shook her head, confused. Saywer had never shown such a dedicated friendship before during her time when they had fiirst crashed. She joined the rest of the group under the cover of the palms.
"How did you know Richard would be here?" Locke asked, speaking to Juliet.
"Richard's always been here." Juliet replied calmly.
"How old is he?" Locke asked curiously. Zoe glanced at Juliet, intrigued to know the answer too.
"Old. Why are you so interested in Richard, John?" Juliet asked, now the curious one.
"I'm interested in him because he was about to tell me how I could save us." Locke explained
""Save us"?" Juliet inquired.
"Yeah. But before he could finish, we were interrupted by that flash of light. And I'm hoping we can pick up where we left off." Locke continued.
"I hate to bust up the "I'm an Other, you're an Other" reunion, but Faraday--the guy that's actually gonna save us--is being death marched into the jungle right now." Sawyer pointed out. Zoe watched nervously as Daniel Faraday was being marched into the jungle by a woman whom had a rifle trained on his back.
"Good luck with that." Locke replied.
"You're not gonna help me save him?" Sawyer responded, surprised.
"No. I'm gonna go down and finish my conversation with Richard." Locke replied surely.
"That's gonna get us all killed. You go rolling in there, they're gonna know we're here!" Sawyer replied, almost horrified.
"Fair enough. I'll give you ten minutes head start." Locke responded reasonably, and before anyone could stop him, he started off down the hill. Zoe sighed reluctantly, and got up to follow him. She felt someone grab her wrist, and turn her round, their lips meeting hers, full of force and passion that caught her completely offguard, and she surrended to the kiss almost instantly, it felt suprising mouthwatering, and her kisser tasted like forrest berries. She opened her eyes to meet the eyes of the culprit of the kiss. Her eyes widened in surprise as she met the eyes of Sawyer, but he turned away from her before she coould say anything to follow Juliet, Jo and Mars towards the direction Farraday and the woman holding him at gun point. Zoe watched him temporarily as he walked away from her before catching up wiyh John descending down the valley to where the Army camp was.
"Richard Alpert!" John shouted for him as he and Zoe now came in plain view to everyone in the camp. Their escaped captor, Jones, was down there, having his wounds tended to by a fellow Other dressed in military clothing. He spotted John and Zoe immediately.
"Hey. Hey!" He shouted at them, standing up and picking up his newly aquired rifle.
"I'm looking for Richard." Locke shouted to him calmly.
"Don't move." Jones ordered, aiming his rifle at both John and Zoe. A number of other Others followed cautiously as well, one of them covering Locke with a bow and arrow and another covering Zoe with another gun.
"Richard Alpert!" John continued to shout.
"On the ground now." Jones barked at him but Locke took little notice.
"Richard, I need to talk to you." John continued, walking straight past Jones. Zoe stood rooted in spot just a few feet away from Jones, more cautious for the safety of her baby. Jones turned to follow Locke.
"Shut--your--mouth!" Jones shouted impaiently, cocking his rifle at Locke's back. Locke raised his hands to show surrender. Suddenly, Richard appeared before them.
"That's enough! Who are you?" Richard interrupted them all, looking between Jones and Locke as he approached from one of the tents.
"My name is John Locke." Locke sighed.
"Is that supposed to mean something to me?" Richard asked preplexed.
"Jacob sent me." Locke replied knowningly. Richard and John regarded each other for several moments.
"Put the gun down." Richard ordered Jones.
"What? Richard, you can't seriously trust him." Jones protested. Richard walked over to Jones and slapped the rifle out of his hands, and it fell to the ground with a heavy thud.
"I said... put the gun down, Widmore." Richard spoke coldly, reminding him of his place. Zoe gasped in horror. Right before her, was Charles Widmore. The man who had destoryed her home, family and friends.
"Your name is Widmore? Charles Widmore?" Locke spoke thoughtfully more then asking Jones. oe couldn't believe it. Charles Widmore. Here. There were obviously way in the past then, judging by how young he looked. Anger still spread through her veins. The slaughter of her life in L.A wouldn't have happened yet. She could shoot him right now and stop him.
"What's it to you?" Widmore snapped angrily.
"Nothing. Nice to meet you." John replied. Zoe hesitated, and reluctantly followed John and Richard into the tent Richard invited them inside to, to discuss the situation at hand. Zoe started to argue with herself in her mind why she couldn't personally hurt Widmore. Locke handed Richard the compass he had given him in the previous time shift, and Richard began to examine it. Locke took a sip from a world war 2 era canteen, and then handed it to Zoe to drink from as they sat together, waiting for Richard to realise it really was his compass.
"I gave you this?" Richard checked.
"Yes." Locke confirmed.
"After you were shot in the leg and I... wandered out of the jungle to patch you up?" Richard continued.
"That's right." Locke confirmed again.
"Then why don't I remember... well, any of this?" Richard asked bemused.
"Because it hasn't happened yet." Locke answered simply.
"I'm not sure what you're expecting me to say, John Locke." Richard chuckled lightly.
"I expect you to tell me how to get off the Island." Locke explained.
"That's very privileged information. Why would I share it with you?" Richard asked curiously.
"Because you told me that I had something very important to do once I get there. And because I'm your leader." Locke responded with pride.
"You're my leader?" Richard responded, doubtful.
"That's what you told me." Locke responded.
"Look, I... certainly don't want to contradict myself, but... we have a very specific process for selecting our leadership, and it starts at a v--very, very young age." Richard explained.
"All right. All right. What year is it right now?" Locke inquired.
"It's 1954." Richard responded. Zoe's eyes widened in surprise. Technically, she wasn't even born yet. She smiled to herself. Imagine if she had her baby now, and they shifted back to 2005. Technically, her baby would be older then her.
"All right. May 30, 1956--2 years from now--that's the day I'm born--Tustin, California, and if you don't believe me, I suggest you come and visit me." Locke suggested smiling at Richard, and then perked his ears up as the familar high-pitched humming sound prevaded the Island.
"Oh, no." Zoe whispered.
"Oh, no." John spoke immediately after.
"What's wrong?" Richard asked.
"It's about to happen again. You need to tell me now, Richard. How do I get off the Island? Please! Tell me!" Locke begged desperately. The humming transitioned into a low, deep rumbling, growling louder and louder as the scene bathed into white light. The light enveloped everything before subsiding. Locke and Zoe were left standing alone. Everything had disappeared, including all the tents and camping equipment, and the Others. Just up the slope, where the tent that had Charlotte and Miles, wrists still bound together behind their backs had been held were there and appeared ok. Locke shook his head after turning several times, and folded forward, putting his head into his hand. Not too far away, Juliet, Sawyer and Faraday recover from the flash. Faraday spotted Charlotte and rushed over to her
"Charlotte! Are you ok?" He asked her with pure concern.
"Yeah, I'm fine." Charlitte replied, looking relieved. Faraday toucged ger arms and began untying her. Sawyer walked over to Zoe.
"Are you ok?" He asked her anxiously, Zoe had gone back to the familar chalky flush on her face. Zoe turned to face Sawyer and smiled warmly at him.
"Yes, I'm ok thank you, Sawyer." She replied.
"Good." Sawyer responded satisfied.
"Sawyer?" Zoe spoke.
"Mmm?" Sawyer responded.
"Tell me about that kiss..." She asked curiously.

Mars sat near a reaby river, looking at Carrie and Richard's picture. She couldn't believe that she actually went 'all the way' with Richard. She felt satisfied, of course, but the guilt is starting to eat her from the inside out. She knew that she would need to tell Richard about Carrie sooner or later, but she didn't want to create confusion. Not now, at least.
Mars stared blankly at the river, not knowing what to do next.
Mars' chains of thoughts were broken when she heard footsteps getting closer to her. She was about to stand up when she felt something is pressed against the back of her head. Mars gasped.
"Don't move."
Mars raised both hands in the air whilst searching for some ideas on what to do next.
"That's it. Put your hands above your head." the man said.
Mars winced. That man's voice seems familiar somehow. Mars hissed in pain as the man tied her hands tightly with a rope.
"You're not supposed to be here. This is our territory." he said. "You hostiles better keep your distance from us or else--"
With one confident pull Mars snapped the ropes that binds her hands together. With blinding speed she turned around, channeled her power once more, and released an enormous energy towards the man. Mars watched as the man, wearing a DHARMA jumpsuit, was thrown backwards at great speed.
Mars ran towards him and put her hands on the collar of his shirt.
"Listen to me pal --"
Mars gasped and immediately released her grip when she realized who the man in front of her is.
"Mars?" The man asked.
"Oh, gosh." Mars said. "Jin?"
Mars pulled out a hankerchief out of her pocket and started to wipe away the blood that started to drip down Jin's nose.
"I'm sorry. I'm sorry, pal." Mars said.
"That's alright." he said.
"Hang on." Mars paused. "Your English is really good."
"Thanks." Jin smiled. "I guess this is what happens after 3 years with native speakers." he said.
Mars smiled.
"What are you doing here?" Jin asked.
"I'm just.. looking for some fresh air." Mars said.
"Are you one of the hostiles now?" Jin asked.
"Technically.." Mars paused. "Yes. Yes I am."
"Oh." Jin said.
"But but but.." Mars interrupted. "I'm still nice, don't worry. I'm still.. one.. of you." she said, trying to be convincing.
"Of course you are." Jin said.
"By the way, how's Miles and Sawyer?"
"They're fine." Jin remarked. "Alive and well."
Mars nodded. "Just tell them that I'm fine."
"I will." Jin stood up and picked up his rifle. "Well, I better go now.. Radzinsky must be looking for me."
"So what are you now? A DHARMA security guy or something?" Mars quipped while pointing at the security logo on Jin's upper left chest.
"Yeah," Jin sighed. "I need to make sure everything is safe."
"Do I need to fix up your wound?" Mars offered.
"I'll live." Jin said. "So I guess I'll see you around."
Mars gave Jin a friendly hug. "Take care, Jin-bo."
Jin smiled and started to walk away.
Mars sighed, shook her head and started to walk back to camp.

Some period of time before Ajira-ness
It was getting dark in the streets of Nashville, so Carrie decided to take a shortcut through a nearby alleyway. She shivered, wishing she'd brought a jacket. It was quiet as she walked down, her footsteps echoing. She noticed her shoelace was untied, and bent down by some bins to tie it. Suddenly, a bag was flung over her head and she was dragged backwards. A taser connected with her thigh, making her scream as she was shocked unconscious.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Carrie woke up several hours later in a daze. Her vision slid back into focus, as she realised she was in a cold, empty room, tied to a chair. She looked up and saw a camera in the corner, blinking at her with a red light.
A door in front of her was slowly opened. A figure stepped through and closed the door behind. A light was switched on. Carrie blinked as her eyes adjusted, and she realised Ben was standing in front of her.
"I shoulda known it was you behind this," she said.
"The only reason I haven't done this before, Carolyna," Ben said, taking a few steps towards her, "is because Richard would have me usurped if I had. But I'm not the leader anymore. So I don't have to worry about that."
Before Carrie could say anything, Ben's fist connected with the side of her head. Blood started to drip from her, Ben continuing to beat her until she and the chair she was tied to toppled over.
"Why are you doing this now?" Carrie asked, as Ben crouched down next to her.
"I know how to get back to the Island," he replied. "And I'm going to bring the Oceanic 6 with me. But I don't want you coming." He untied the ropes binding Carrie to the chair. In one swift movement, he picked her up by the scruff of the neck with one hand and threw her against the wall.
In a few seconds, she mustered up the will and the strength to hit him back. After her fist conected with his stomach, with one hand Ben forced Carrie back against the wall, and with the other he pulled his gun out and pointed it directly at her forehead.
"You gonna kill me, Benjamin?" She asked, almost as if she didn't believe he would.
"Yes, I am," he said coolly, cocking the gun. "And I am gonna enjoy it. I'm gonna pull this trigger, and watch as the bullet penetrates your brain. I am going to watch you die, Carolyna Copeland, and I am going to love every second of it."
Carrie watched Ben with a poker face. She knew she wasn't going to die. If she was, she'd have a terrifying sense of foreboding. "Why do you want me to die so badly, Benjamin?" She asked coolly.
"Because it's not fair," Ben replied. He was trying to keep his cool, but Carrie could tell he was angry, in a childish way almost. "You're nothing, Carolyna. Understand? You go around thinking your something, just because your boyfriend has some form of authority over our people, but you're not. The Island is going to let you die." He pulled the trigger, but nothing happened. He pulled it again, and again, but it was jammed. Ben looked at Carrie, who was looking at him with her eyebrows raised, in a way that said, I told you so. "Plan B," he said. "Come with me."
Ben led Carrie out of the building, to a rough and virtually deserted part of the town. He looked around the streets, and froze in shock at something in the difference.
"What?" Carrie asked, looking where he was. She saw three vans in the distance. "Do you know them?"
"Those are Widmore's men," Ben replied. "I saw them earlier."
"They're coming this way."
"I can't let them see me." Ben looked around, but there was no hiding place. They were out in the open. Thinking quickly, and hating herself for thinking of it, Carrie pushed Ben against the wall and kissed him. They heard the vans drive by, Carrie putting her hands either side of Ben's head to hide his face from view. Only when the vans were out of earshot, did Carrie release from the kiss, stepping back. They looked at each other for a moment.
"Quick thinking," Ben said. "How did you know they'd drive past?"
"You never been to Nashville before? People are kissing in every back alley you find," Carrie replied.
Ben considered Carrie for a moment. "Thank you, Carrie," he said.
Carrie smiled at Ben's use of her shortened name. "No problem, Ben," she replied, before turning around and walking away.

Days on the beach - the break up
René perched herself on some rocks washing dishes at the beach. She hummed to herself quietly, content in her daily routine. She looked up a moment and saw Cindy coming to join her. Cindy had decided over the past few years to grow her hair out more which made her appear younger. She waved at René as she approached and sat down beside her.
"Howdy howdy." René said with a smile. "What brings you to my part of town?" She joked to Cindy.
"I came to take over." She smiled back at René. "Eric wanted to see you." She pointed down the beach. René rolled her eyes and sighed, slightly annoyed. "What's wrong?"
René shook her head and passed the dishes over to Cindy. "I don't know Cindy. It's just, I don't know."
"Well, go ahead, I'll finish up here." Cindy shooed René off.
René waded in the water as she strolled further down the beach to where Eric was. As she got closer she noticed he was holding something in his hand and his face was a mix of anguish and anger. The closer she got to him she realized the thing in his hand was her personal sketchbook. But her biggest concern was that she also used it as her diary. All her stream of conscious thoughts, her inner most secrets, she wrote in that book. Her stomach sank and wrenched in her. She began filling with sorrow if he had indeed read it and anger, if he truly had read it.
"What are you doing with my book Eric?" René was stern with him, but managed to not be the one to yell first. He shook the book back at René angrily.
"Is it true?" He threw it at her. She managed to catch it before it fell into the water.
"Eric, you weren't meant to see any of that. Those are my personal thoughts, how I deal with things. You had no right,"
"I don't give a damn about rights René. It's been three YEARS!" Eric started to cry. "I have done everything I can for you, and it's never been good enough. All this time, you've never loved me once have you? Not once have you been able to give me just a tiny piece of your heart have you? HAVE YOU?!" René jumped at Eric's harsh words, closing her eyes afraid to see the look in his eye.
"I'm sorry you had to see." René paused, retracting her direction. "You know what, no, I'm not sorry. You had absolutely no right to go through my things, to read," René wanted to scream at him in frustration.
"You're right, you are right," Eric spewed out. "But I guess it doesn't matter anymore does it? I know how you feel."
"I've never hidden my feelings about any of our relationship from you Eric, NEVER! I told you a long time ago how I felt, I"
"But it's been three years René." Eric interrupted again. "It's like you never wanted to even try." Eric walked away, he didn't look back.
René wiped the tears from her face. She always knew that it would have come down to this, that the reciprocation would never be equal. She opened her book and scrolled through the pages until coming upon a portrait that she drew just a few days ago. She read her inscription aloud and softly to herself, "Of all the men I've ever loved, my heart broken in two, I lie in ruins 'til your return, to mend me and again undo." She touched the face of the sketch, closing her eyes, it was like she could feel the scars on his lips, the cleft of his chin. Ben stared back at her with lonely graphite eyes.

Aboard the plane, Carrie watched as Jack, then Hurley, came onto the flight. Jack stopped to talk to Kate, before going to sit down in the row behind Carrie.
"That should be everybody," said the flight attendant.
"Hold up!" Came a familiar voice. "Wait, please!" Ben entered the plane in a rush. He was badly beaten and his arm was in a sling. "Thank you for not closing it."
"Oh, that's okay," smiled the flight attendant. "Go right on in."
"Thanks," Ben replied. He started making his way towards his seat. He frowned slightly when he caught sight of Carrie, having had no idea she knew how to get back. Hurley caught sight of Ben and jumped up in a panic.
"Wait!" He exclaimed, panicking. "What's he doing here?!"
"Hurley, hey-" Jack stood up and tried to calm Hurley down.
"No, no! He can't come!" Hurley refused.
"If you want to get back, this is how it's gonna have to be."
"No one told me he was gonna be here," Hurley said.
"Who told you to be here, Hugo?" Ben asked coolly.
"Is everything okay?" The flight attendant interrupted, confused.
"Yes," Jack replied. "Yes, everything's fine. Right?"
"Yes, Jack," Hurley said, still obviously worried about Ben's presence. "I'll be fine."
The flight attendant looked at Jack. "Are you Jack Shephard, seat 8C? Security found this while screening your cargo." Carrie watched as she handed him an envelope. "Now if you two don't mind taking your seats, we are gonna be pushing back for takeoff."
Ben and Jack both went back to their seats, Ben sitting opposite Jack. He glaced at Carrie before sitting down. "What's that, Jack?" He asked, referring to the envelope Jack was holding.
"Nothing." Jack shook the question off, before looking back at the people in Coach. "And the other people on this plane - what's gonna happen to them?"
Ben looked at Jack. "Who cares?" He asked coldly.
Carrie looked back at the people there, wondering the same thing as Jack.

Days on the beach - awkward : after break-up
There were lots of small conversations going on around the fire but René avoided them and just sat back and observed. The basic human connection she felt slipping from her grip, she saw in the others around her. Every once in a while she would look around the group and she found Eric was glaring back at her. A combination of rage and sadness. René realized she had lost most of her appetite and put her bowl of food down. From across the way Richard could tell something was obviously bothering her. He walked over and sat next to her.
"You alright René? You seem, distracted."
"Can we take a walk?" René asked with the slightest of hesitation. Richard nodded, excused himself from the group and they began to make their way into the interior of the Island. After getting up the hill a bit so they could see out a few miles down the beach overlooking the camp, René took a seat. "Eric found my book today." She began somberly.
Richard sat down next to her now. "Oh, René, I'm sorry. I never meant,"
"It's not your fault Richard. If you hadn't helped me help myself, I wouldn't have been able to cope. I just never gave up the habit. Truthfully, part of me is ok about all of it, but" she paused, "obviously a huge part isn't. I still feel like a stranger to so many here. You're the closest thing I've ever had to a brother, the only one I feel I can openly share with. I hope you don't mind. I don't mean to monopolize your time."
Richard blushed a bit. "I'm honored you think of me that way." He smiled back at her. "You know, I've seen so many people pass through the courses of relationships here. I know you may feel like you're in a tough spot, but I know you'll find your way through. Eric will too."
"I don't really feel that way though. Like I'm stuck. I just feel, strange, I guess. I was as honest as I could be. I think maybe, I just should try to keep as much distance as I can from him right now. Give him time to heal, give me time to forgive."
"Forgive him for breaking your trust?"
"No," she looked down at the camp now, "forgiving myself," she took a deep breath in, trying to expel her self inflicted hurt, "for breaking his heart."
"René, you can't blame yourself for this. It's unfair to you to solely take blame." René smiled at him.
"Oh wise man of the Island." She rolled her eyes, giggled and pushed Richard on the shoulder. They both sat and laughed for a bit.
They sat and listened to the camp below them. Voices and laughter palpitated the air. The light slowly diminishing from an unkempt fire. A few seagulls could be heard in the distance getting ready to roost for the night.
"Well, I'm going to retire for the evening. Walk down with me?" Richard asked.
She nodded. "No thanks. I like the peace and tranquility from up on high." She winked. "I'm going to stay and enjoy it a bit longer."
"Alright, see you in the morning then." Richard gave a small wave and smile and headed back down to the beach. René watched him disappear into the darkness. She laid back on the ground taking in the glow of the starlight. Her eyes grew heavy until she eventually fell asleep.

Timeflash: November 2004
Jo took a quick headcount to make sure they were all accounted for.
"Everybody's here," she said to Chase, who stood by her side. "We're okay." She met Chase's eyes and she felt that familiar tingle of electricity. This experience had brought them much closer, and she had almost forgotten all the animosity that she had previously felt towards him. Right now, he was her only constant, and she remained close by his side.
They were an odd group. Surprisingly, Jo and Juliet had revived their old friendship as well. Sawyer assumed the leadership role, and Jo had to admit to herself that he seemed better suited for it than Jack ever was. Jo and Zoe talked quite a bit, and Jo tried to allay Zoe's fears by convincing her that if they did stumble upon Ethan, there were enough of them to take care of the situation. Mars and Locke kept largely to themselves, and Miles annoyed everybody.
Out of the corner of her eye, Jo saw Charlotte collapse to the ground and blood began to pour out of her noise. Her body shook violently in the throes of a seizure. Jo and Chase were at her side immediately, closely followed by Juliet, and Faraday hovered over them. She remained unconscious for a full ten minutes.
"If there's something that you want to tell me, Daniel, now would be a good time," Jo spoke up. "Did you know that this would happen?"
Faraday fidgeted nervously. "I thought... I thought it might. I think it's neurological. Our brains have an internal clock, a sense of time. The flashes... throw the clock off. It's like really bad jet lag."
"Really bad jet lag doesn't make you hemorrhage, Daniel. You wanna tell me why it isn't happening to the rest of us?" Juliet responded, giving Jo a knowing glance. Faraday clearly knew more than he was letting on.
"I don't know, but thank God it's not," he replied evasively.
The group took turns watching over Charlotte while the others simply waited to see what would happen next.
Miles was the one who spotted her open eyes. "Hey! She's waking up!" he called out. Jo and Faraday were by her side in seconds.
"Daniel," she moaned. "Oh, my head. What happened?"
"There was another flash. You passed out. How do you feel?" he asked, his voice dripping with tenderness.
"A bit dizzy, but... I'm fine," she replied. Jo checked her pulse and found a healthy heartrate. The color was beginning to return to her face. "She's going to be okay," Jo declared as she and Faraday helped Charlotte to her feet.
Miles interjected with his customary sarcasm. "Hooray. Everything's back to normal. Now what?"
Sawyer seized the reigns with his newfound sense of authority. "I'll tell you 'now what.' We're going to the Orchid."
"Why are we going to the Orchid?" Zoe asked him, shivering as she remembered the grisly scene of Keamy's death.
"Because that's where all this started, and it's probably where it's going to stop." He glanced meaningfully at Locke, who nodded his approval.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jo stayed by Locke's side, trying to uncover the real reason Locke was so intent on returning to the Orchid. She and John had very little to say to each other since Boone's death, mostly because she had avoided being alone with him at all, but under the circumstances she knew that re-establishing a friendly relationship with him could possibly provide more answers. He was surprisingly open with her, and told her that he intended to bring Jack, Sun, Sayid, Kate, Carrie, Desmond and Hurley back to the island to correct their mistakes.
Jo's felt a sudden surge of longing when he mentioned Jack. She was certain that she would never see him again, and had tried not to think about him, but Locke seemed to be certain that they were alive, and would somehow return.
"How do you plan to convince them to come back?" she asked him. She knew Jack too well. It was going to take some serious persuasion to get him on board. Unless...the thought struck suddenly, and filled her with hope. Unless he came back for her?
Locke and Jo stopped short when they spotted the beam of light emanating straight into the sky ahead of them. The rest of the group lagged behind them, and they had a few moments alone before they caught up. Jo gasped. She stole a glance at Locke and knew from his expression that he knew exactly what they were looking at.
Miles and the others ambled up behind them. "What the hell is that?"
Locke answered him decisively. "Whatever it is, we better stay clear of it."
Saywer spoke up. "Beach is this way. Now you wanna take the scenic route?"
Faraday chimed in. "John... do you know when we are?"
Locke avoided an answer. "We need to keep moving."
"That beam of light was coming from the hatch, wasn't it?" Jo said to Locke.
Locke nodded but said nothing more. After a few moments they heard voices ahead of them. Sawyer and Jo volunteered to investigate. Zoe paled slightly, imagining another encounter with Ethan. Jo motioned for Chase to stay with Zoe as she and Sawyer tread very softly towards the voices. Sawyer cocked his rifle in preparation for whomever they might meet. Straight ahead of them, they saw Claire on the ground, giving birth to Aaron while Kate coached her. Sawyer was gazing at Kate sadly. Jo recognized the longing in his eyes; it was the same feeling she had for Jack.
She whispered to him as he lowered his rifle. "Sawyer, this is the night that Boone died. Chase is with us, and Juliet. We can save him..."
"No," Sawyer interrupted her harshly. "We can't interfere."
"It's not your decision!" she exclaimed. "We have to try!"
Before they could take another step, the now-familiar white light began to build to a blinding crescendo and the low-pitched humming filled their ears. Jo and Sawyer shielded their eyes and crouched to the ground, overcome with pain. Kate and Claire melted away before their eyes.
Days on the beach - Whoa
"René, wake up." René was startled, she couldn't believe she'd slept the whole night outside exposed in the open like she did. She felt another sharp nudge to her shoulder. She blinked and rubbed her eyes trying to focus, the morning light slightly blinding. She couldn't make out the figure that stood in front of her. Again he spoke, "René, hurry, wake up."
She got to her feet and realized who was standing before her. She stumbled backward in fear, tripping and crawling on the ground away from the figure.
"René, it's ok." He said gently.
"You're not supposed to be here. You're dead. You told me I'd never see you again. You aren't supposed to be here!" She shuttered. She hadn't seen the face or heard the voice of her husband Shannon for over three years. Her hands trembled as she adamantly pointed at him, "You, cannot be here! I did as I was told."
Shannon smiled gracefully back at her. "But we need you again," He paused out-stretching his hand to her to pull her from the ground. "It's ok." Her hand still shaking with turbulent fear, she slipped her's into his and he lifted her effortlessly to her feet. He brushed the hair from her face caressing her cheek. This made her flinch.
"You've developed an abhorrence of me?" His face shifted into a slight sadness at her distress. She didn't know how to answer his question. She wanted to trust him, but her gut told her to reserve herself. All she had the capacity for was to simply nod her head in agreement. He took a long moment just looking her over, like he was seeing the outside world again, cooped away after a twenty year prison sentence. After his time to soak her in, he leaned in to her ear and clearly whispered, "eum para et crede."
René tilted her head inquisitively with a perplexed look on her face. "Obey and trust who?" she asked. Shannon just smiled back at her and simply vanished.
René shot straight up, sweating and hyperventilating. She realized she wasn't in her tent. She had fallen asleep outside where Richard had left her. "Richard!" She yelled at herself. "I have to find Richard." She got up and ran back down to camp.
1975
Jo slipped out of bed and pulled on her Head Dharma Librarian uniform. She looked around the house for Chase before remembering he had already showered and left for his brief assignment in the Looking Glass. She quickly downed a cup of coffee and headed out to the library on the edge of the Barracks. It was early, but a number of people were already out and about. Jo waved at Miles and LeFleur as they were heading towards the security headquarters and stopped for a chat with Juliet at the motor pool until she realized she was running late and quickened her pace.
The Dharma Initiative Library, known as the Phoenix, had become her haven. It housed every work of classic of literature ever written as well as the most impressive philosophy collection she had ever seen. She was beyond thrilled when she was offered the position as Head Librarian following her entrance exam. This position gave her so much meaning and a real sense of home in the year she had spent with the Dharma Initiative.
It was almost a relief to drop the "Dr." from her name, something that Chase had not been able to do. He had been recognized immediately for his medical brilliance, and had already risen to the position of Chief of the medical staff. He had tried to persuade Jo to resume her medical career, but she refused. She preferred to get lost in the library's endless shelves.
The clock must have been off this morning because Jo's carefully engineered plan to avoid Roger Linus' early morning shift failed for the first time. She stepped into her office just as he was collecting his cleaning supplies. Her face immediately reddened, and she felt flustered.
"Roger, erm...hi. Good morning, I mean."
Roger nodded in surly acknowledgment. "Mornin'."
Jo turned her head away from him every so slightly. The man reeked of booze.
She continued talking out of a sense of forced politeness. "How is Ben doing? I've seen him on the swings with Annie, I'm so thrilled that he's made a friend. He seems very lonely sometimes."
"He's fine," Roger barked in response. "Just fine."
Jo was ready to end the conversation there, but Roger lingered for a moment. Jo didn't know what to say to him. This was the longest conversation they had ever had.
"And...and the baby?" Jo blurted out, feeling increasingly awkward. A look of fury overcame Roger and he glared at her fiercely.
"Look, she's not my baby, okay? She's Amy's baby now. It's none of your business anyhow. I got my hands full with Ben."
Jo nodded meekly. "Yes, sorry...I just...we share the same name, so...I feel connected to her, you know?"
Roger continued to glare at her. "Stay out of it." He stormed out of her office and out of the Phoenix.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jo knocked on Miles' door first thing after work. As soon as he appeared in the doorway Jo held up the six pack of Dharma beer she had brought. His face lit up.
"Now that's what I'm talking about!" he exclaimed. "Come on in, I've got about half an hour before my ping-pong tournament with LeFleur."
Jo walked in and settled into a comfy chair, cracking open two cans right away and handing one to Miles. "Don't you two have more important things to do? Like, oh I don't know, protecting us from the Hostiles?"
"There is nothing more important than ping pong," he deadpanned. Jo laughed. She and Miles had developed an easy friendship in their days among the Dharma Initiative, particularly because they shared a very weird experience, and she was grateful for it. He had really helped to ease her adjustment to their new life.
"So what's up?" Miles asked casually as he sipped his beer and grimaced. Dharma beer was not known to be the highest quality beer.
Jo got right to the point. "Miles, I know you've made a point of avoiding your father, as I have. But do you think, when..." Jo struggled to find the right words to express her question. "...when you are born in a few years, will you...I don't know...avoid Baby You?"
Miles stared at her, suddenly serious. This was a rare mood for him. "Yes. I think I will."
"Why?"
Miles thought for a moment, and took another sip of beer. He wiped his mouth with his hand. "Because I can't change anything. Faraday said..."
"Forget Faraday!" Jo interrupted. "I'm talking about you, and your reasons."
"Hey, chill out!" Miles reasoned with her. "Are you talking about Baby You? Amy's baby?"
Jo nodded. "I never knew I had a real family until Ben told me everything at the Hydra, and now I have the chance to witness it, and make sure she's happy..."
"It's not she, it's you!" Miles corrected her. "And you're opening a whole can of worms if you want to be in her life. Seriously, Jo...I wouldn't recommend it."
"I guess you're right..." Jo replied dubiously.
"Look, I understand where you're coming from, I really do. I just think it's better to go on with your life as if Baby You didn't live four doors away from you and Chase."
"That's living a lie, Miles," Jo responded sadly.
Miles agreed, and shrugged. "Yeah. That's what we do." He toasted Jo with his beer and chugged the rest of it.

Fourteenth TimeShift
Zoe and the others had trekked for what felt like, all day, but with the flashes, it was hard to tell what the real time was. When they finally arrived at where the temple should have been, they all exchanged confused glances. The temple building wasn't there, as predicted. Zoe felt a pang of guilt and sadness as they all but Daniel had left him and Charlotte behind, but she knew what was going to happen to her and she really didn't want to be around when it did. She sat down to catch her breath while Locke tested the rope of the well and prepared to go down.
"You’re going down there?" Sawyer asked Locke in disbelief.
"Uh-huh." Locke responded. At this response, Zoe got up and walked over to the well. She was going too, but to everyone's unawares. She knew if she had revealed her plans sooner, they would have thought of better excuses to keep her here.
"What exactly are you hoping to find?" Sawyer demmanded.
"A way off the island." Locke responded simply.
"You expecting a subway?" Sawyer replied sarcastically. Zoe grabbed his hand supportively to try and calm him down.
"Goodbye, James, Juliet, Miles... " Locke started to say as he went to grab the rope, but Zoe grabbed it first.
"What do think you're doing?" Locke asked.
"I'm going with you." Zoe replied flatly.
"No. You're not." Locke replied with tones of authority.
"Locke's right. It's too dangerous." Sawyer agreed, pulling Zoe away from the well.
"No!" Zoe protested as Sawyer did so. "Look, it can't be anymore dangerous then being here. Besides I have to go back!"
"Why?" Saywer asked, looking crestfallen.
"For the baby. If I stay, I die and the baby dies." Zoe replied. "I can't let that happen. Not my baby. Not Charlie's baby."
"What are you talking about?" Sawyer responded. "How come you will die?"
"She's right, Sawyer." Jo interjected. "This island, it kills pregnant women when they enter their third tri-mester." Sawyer seemed lost for words. He was obviously searching for some better excuse to stop her from risking breaking her neck going down the well, and god knows where she would end up back off the island. Zoe exchanged a thankful glance at Jo. "You should go." Jo agreed.
"No, she can't. You have no idea how that will mess up this place even more if Zoe comes to - it has been bad enough when Ben died, I mean, look at Charlotte..." Locke trailed off.
"Cut it out Locke, you aren't going to argue about this. I am going. End of. Besides, you still owe me." Zoe reminded him, referring to the submarine incident. Locke sighed and then nodded his head reluctantly.
"Ok, you better go down first then. That way we can be sure you get down safely." Locke replied reluctantly. Zoe nodded in agreement and took hold of the rope, she gathered part of it and tied it around her plump belly, before she could start her decend, Sawyer grabbed her arm, and whipped her body round to face her. She stared into his soft eyes, her eyes were already wet with sorry. She had to say goodbye to someone who was important to her. Again. The only difference was at least he was going to survive, but she was unlikely to ever see him again.
Sawyer bent his head down to her face and kissed her passionatly, his tounge massaging hers warmly. He tasted so sweet and delicous. It made her hungry and mouthwatering. Sawyer pulled back, chis eyes still closed.
"I just needed a goodbye." He muttered, the tone of his voice seemed more to convince himself then her. Zoe pursed her lips and readied herself down the well.
Everyone pitched in to help lower Zoe safely down the well, as she was a lot heavier compared to two or so months ago.
Zoe felt chills shimmer down her spine as she was lowered down into the darkness, the well was long, yet, strangely, it didn't get darker. it was starting to brighten up, and it got colder by the second. Zoe soon realised why when her feet touched the ground. It was icy. Really icy, and really cold. She wished she had a hoodie or jumper now, but it was too late to worry about that. She untied herself and tugged the rope hard twice to indicate she was down safely. She waited paiently for Locke to arrive, however, she paled as she heard shouts back up on normal ground level. It sounded like Jin was arguing.

Days on the Beach - get your answers here...
It had been a few days since René had been startled awake from her dream. She couldn't get the phrase out of her head. Eum para et crede. She said it over and over again. What put her more on edge was that as soon as she had told Richard about it he disappeared off into the jungle for further answers. "René, there's no concern. Don't worry. I'll be back in a few hours" Richard assured her. That was three days ago. She laid in her tent avoiding people's questions, pondering what possible answers Richard would come back with.
Vanessa came running into René's tent. "Sorry to intrude. You wanted to know when he was back." René quickly got up and flew out of her tent. Richard motioned for her to come his way and join him at his tent. She did her best to act nonchalantly to not attract too much attention to her already jittery behavior. She looked back at Vanessa, "Thanks, by the way." René said as Vanessa smiled back.
René didn't wait for Richard to even sit down before lighting into him. "Where the hell did you go? A few hours?" Richard stayed calm and washed his face up in a bowl of water sitting on his desk and patted himself dry with a towel.
"I wish I had an answer for you René." He looked her straight in the eye and said it with a dead-pan depressed tone. René stepped back, slightly jolted and dismayed. Richard shook his head. "I'm very sorry, but I didn't find out what I was hoping to."
"So you know something then?" Her forehead creasing with inquisitiveness.
Richard stared at her, gears turning behind his dark eyes. He found it best and easiest to not say anything at all. René took the hint all too well. She just slumped into his chair. "I'm sorry René." He knelt down beside her and placed his hand on her shoulder.
"I really wish someone else got the dreams. Someone, more apt to not question their current situation."
"Did you ever think that's maybe why you get them?" He raised his eyebrows, hoping she would see the bigger picture.

Final Timeshift
"Son of a bitch!" Saywer muttered as Locke descended into the well and disappeared from sight. He refused to let go of the rope, even when Juliet tried to pull him away.
They were all startled by another sudden flash and the next thing they heard was Locke's anguished scream as he fell to the bottom of the well.
As they recovered from the painful effects of the flash, Miles spoke up. "I think you can let go of that now," he suggested to Sawyer. Sawyer opened his clenched eyes to find he was still clinging to the rope, but the well had disappeared entirely and the rope was coming out of solid earth.
"No, no, no..." Sawyer groaned. Juliet stepped up beside him and calmly persuaded him to let go of the rope. "James, stop. We can't help them."
"She's right," Jo agreed sadly, and placed her hands on Sawyers in an attempt to get him to let go of the rope. She spoke softly to him, realizing that he was perhaps more concerned about Zoe and less about Locke. "She's gone, Sawyer." For better or worse, she knew that Zoe had done the right thing, and if Locke really was fulfilling his destiny, as he so loved to proclaim, she had to trust that her friend was probably safest in his hands.
Sawyer refused to give in. He brushed Jo's hands off and clawed desperately at the rope in the ground. Juliet got on the ground with him and forced him to look at her.
"We can't help them. Wherever John and Zoe went, they're gone. And wherever we are is before that well was ever built."
Miles glanced around their surroundings. "Yeah, I'd say way before."
Jin looked puzzled. "What makes you..."
Mlies pointed north, and they all followed his gaze. The backside of what looked like a colossal Egyptian statue towered over them in the distance, facing the ocean and holding two massive stone ankhs. Jo drew in her breath sharply.
"When the hell are we?" she mused out loud.
1977
Sawyer and Jo pulled up to the designated field in the jeep just as Jin pulled up in his Dharma van. The two vehicles faced each other, and the side door of the van opened slowly.
Jo glanced meaningfully at Sawyer. "Are you sure you're ready for this?" she asked nervously. The butterflies in her own stomach were enough to make her feel nauseous, and she gripped her seat tightly.
"Yeah," he replied solemnly. "I guess I am." They hopped out of the jeep and walked towards the van. The sun was directly in front of them so that Jo couldn't see very clearly. Before she knew it, she was swept up in a crushing bear hug by Hurley.
"Hey Hurley!" she exclaimed. "Oh my God! I can't believe you came back!"
"Hey Jo!" he cried happily, squeezing her more tightly. Jo began to feel dizzy. Finally, he released her and moved on to Sawyer.
Jo continued towards the van, her eyes filling with tears. The next figure to step out was Jack, dressed in an expensive suit. He took a few tentative steps towards Jo, then gained confidence and swiftly reached her. Jo could see his eyes filling with tears as well. Without a word, he reached for her face and cupped her head in his hands as he kissed her, fueled by three long years of pent-up emotions: guilt, terror, longing, ardor, pain, regret. Jo thought the kiss would never end, and didn't want it to. She felt like she was home again, and the past three years melted from her memory.
When they finally ended their kiss, Jo whispered in Jack's ear as he held her tightly. "Don't ever leave me again," she commanded him. "Never."
"I'll never leave you," Jack promised, then kissed her again.
The were oblivious to everything around them. Jo didn't see who else exited the van after Jack, and frankly, she didn't care. It simply didn't matter. He was the one she had come for.
