...argh, what a horrifying movie. I know now why I never watch horror movies. Makes you want to puke!
Emerson is great as usual, but not enough of him :-) Anyway I watched it with a friend between 2 am and 4 am, i'm not sure I want to go to bed after this... I had to write something in here to empty my head before to go.
... ok, it's a decent movie... but come on... 5 other movies around that theme? I wonder if the sequels are half as good as the first one. Anyway, one thing is sure, I'm never going to watch them!!!

Aaaw bless.
I agree there was not enough Michael- the character didn't seem to have the chance to progress. For example we have no real idea about his background and why Jiggy recruited him (the explanation given in the film seemed a bit "flimsy")

I still haven't seen Saw. Is it super bloody? I don't do so well with blood (even though House is my favorite show after Lost! I often have to hide my eyes from the bloody scenes!) but I really would love to see Michael in a role other than Ben and I'm very curious about Saw.
Thought???
Is Donnie Whalberg in it, or is that just the later sequels?

Is it super bloody? Is Donnie Whalberg in it, or is that just the later sequels? Well, yes, it is. Not only bloody, but disturbing. To sum it up without really spoiling anything, the serial killer in it takes pleasure in torturing each and every of his victim into doing either a very gross thing or dying a terrible ugly death. But it does have interesting twists and turns, and I have to say for a low-budget movie, (I've red 1.2 millions $ somewhere, which is really minor comparing to other productions). I think it's well done. It's just not really my type of cinema :-). As for Donnie Whalberg, I did the search for you, he appears in Saw II, III and IV but not the first one (which is the only one with Michael). Personnaly I downloaded this movie like months ago, and I had seen already all the bits and pieces with Michael in it on youtube, but I still enjoyed watching it from start to finish. I don't feel the urge to watch it a second time... lol. edit: thinking about that... how about a saw live rewind party... we might convince Edith to finally watch it if we are there to confort her... ah ah!

I used to love horror movies as a teenager, but when I got a little older I started to really dislike them. I love psychological thrillers but I find it really difficult to tolerate the blood and gore. And without seeing it, I've had to assume that with a title like "Saw" this just isn't going to be something I want to sit through, Michael or not.
I must say though that there is a movie from the past couple years that has its gruesome parts, but that I loved. It's called "Descent." It felt like more of a retro horror film and was much more of a thriller. I liked that even though they showed some of the gore (you gotta) they left a lot to the imagination. And it was just damn good.
Oh, and I can get through Shaun of the Dead because it's hilarious.
Lastly, I liked 21 Days Later, but I only dared to watch that one in the first place because Cillian Murphy stars.

The first time I watched Saw, I hated it. I correctly guessed the Jigsaw Killer a half hour into the movie and thought that it was so boring. However, I bought it last week and re-watched it. I agree that Michael was not used to his full potential, but I've changed my opinion about the movie. I think that it was a brilliant idea, but it wasn't executed well. Oh, and I can get through Shaun of the Dead because it's hilarious. Lastly, I liked 21 Days Later, but I only dared to watch that one in the first place because Cillian Murphy stars. I love Shaun of the Dead! That movie was brilliant! I also love Cillian Murphy, but I haven't had the chance to see that movie. ;D

gotta say, I'm with you Jo on this! I really can't watch horror films anymore even though when i was younger i couldn't get enough! Gremlins 1 and 2 is about as 'horror; as i get and i still cant watch some bits of those!!
I think the last time i saw something creepy was um, THe Others (??not sure thats the name, the one with Nicole Kidman, dead with 2 kids), watched it with a few mates and spent the whole time with hands over my eyes with my arms over my ears because just the thought of kids talking with someone else's voice petrifies me!!!
i'm such a wuss!

My mom was just saying Saturday how I used to watch Gremlins aaaall the time as a kid - a very little kid, I might add. First, I wondered why she was ok with that (hehehe) but second, I don't even remember watching it that much! Guess it probably desensitized me a little, at least through my teen years. Though there are no movies I watched more as a kid than Princess Bride or Beetlejuice.

I watched Saw for the second time over the weekend - I don't know if there's something wrong with me, but it doesn't really bother me that much! There's a few bits that make me catch my breath, but it doesn't stay around in my mind after I've finished watching it. Things that are more likely to happen in real life disturb me a lot more. By the time it got The Horrible Thing that happens at the end, I find it a bit silly to be honest. I must say I don't usually watch many horror films because the entire point of them is usually killing people in a variety of ways which is just boring to me. But Saw has quite an interesting central idea. I wouldn't watch the sequels though. I must say though that there is a movie from the past couple years that has its gruesome parts, but that I loved. It's called "Descent." Now *that* film, I didn't like at all! It really really scared me and upset me for a while afterwards. I'm quite claustrophobic (the bit in Saw that does get to me a bit is Amanda's trap for that reason) and the whole thing was just really nightmarish. The end was really disturbing.

I think that's exactly why I liked it - I was scared without being grossed out. I was impressed that it was genuinly disturbing, not just a bunch of shock and gore. But don't get me wrong - I WAS disturbed.
