I'd like someone to explain Rousseau's motivation in delivering Henry/Ben to Sayid. I've been thinking about this quite a lot, and it doesn't quite make sense to me. Rousseau tells Sayid that she has something (someone) that will help him. She then delivers Henry to the Losties and invites Sayid to interrogate him. So far, so good.
BUT - Henry has been caught in one of her traps. Why does she leave him hanging there? As far as we know, he's been caught in a net for 12 hours or so ("since last night") while Rousseau prowls around the camp looking for Sayid. Surely that's risky. He might have been rescued. Does she know who he is? If so, why doesn't she tell Sayid? Or better still, use him herself to bargain with the Others? We know she's not squeamish, so why does she rely on Sayid to torture him? Why doesn't she just do it herself?
Of course, this may all be a setup. As Locke says, it really doesn't seem likely that Ben's going to get himself caught by accident. But if Rousseau is in on the plan, then why does she warn Sayid that Henry is going to lie? Why not just let the Losties assume that he's an innocent and that she's a crazy paranoid? The way she handles it virtually ensures that they are going to be suspicious, and sets Henry up for a lot of unnecessary ultra-violence. I'm willing to buy the idea that Ben allows Rousseau to shoot him with a crossbow (you notice how he practically runs into her sights), but if they've cooked up this scheme between them, then why undermine it by hinting that she knows him?
The other alternative is that Ben really does get caught by accident. But if that's the case, then what is he doing out in the woods? And if he was coming for Locke, as he says, then why isn't Locke on the final list?
I appreciate that some of these questions may have been answered in Series 3. If so, I'd appreciate a few insights. In the wee small hours, it preys on me...
