Episode 20 is called "The Man Behind the Curtain" and is rumored to feature flashbacks to the 70's, as well as flashbacks featuring Karen and Gerald DeGroot, the creators of the Dharma Initiative. But the Lost spoiler page at spoilerslost.blogspot.com/ revealed a rumor that might be even bigger than that. S P O I L E R S P A C E The box for the episode shows a picture of what may be the DeGroots, and says...."It is rumoured that the above couple are actually Gerald and Karen DeGroot and their son is Ben." It is rumored....that the creators of Dharma....the organization who the Others had been fighting against for years.....are Ben's parents...even though the popular theory is that Ben's father is the unseen Jacob. Let's take a while to figure out the implications if that were true.

That might actually make some sense as an origin story if they really do it right- but it might undercut Ben's claim that he's lived there all his life. I figured before that the DeGroots lived somewhere in the U.S and then moved to the island later on when they started Dharma- maybe now they lived on the island as well and then were "recruited" by the Hanso people when they first arrived on the island.

Remember in the episode where Locke blew up the sub and Ben asked Locke "What did it feel like" in reference to knowing that his dad was trying to kill him. I wonder if Ben's father did the same to him.

You mean that deGroots had 2 children: Ben and Jacob. Jacob = DHARMA. DHARMA got greedy with the Hanso Foundation, Windmere Industries <sp?>, etc. DHARMA started disrespecting the island's assets and were slowly destroying it. Ben was in tune with the island and became a rebel with a cause and purged the DHARMA people.

I wonder if Ben's father did the same to him. That's interesting and it would go with my theory of Ben being a rebel. As Ben was getting more and more in tune with the island, he was more and more critical of the ways DHARMA was handling the land. His father would want to stop him from starting an uprise and maybe even kill him.

Did anybody notice that the title of this episode is a reference to the Wizard of OZ, just as Henry Gale was? When Dorothy Gale, the Scarecrow, the Cowardly Lion, and the Tin Man did exactly what they were asked by the Wizard and killed the Wicked Witch of the West, the Wizard refused, at first, to grant them what he had promised them earlier: Home, brain, courage, and a heart. Toto leaves Dorothy's basket and goes behind the curtain and exposes the truth that, in reality, the Wizard was just a little fat, balding man. He tries to cover this faux pas up by saying, "Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain."

If Ben became so in tune with the island that he rebeled and turned on Dharma, then Locke's commentary on Ben losing touch with the island by relying on technology becomes more pointed in that context- makes it more of the old "becoming what you rebeled against" argument which is quite common in the non island real world as well.

This is what I get for checking that Lost spoiler page more often- I used to go into episodes relatively non spoiled, now I'm discovering and spilling all these rumors for here. I just started going there so I'd know if and when it was confirmed that Ben would get the two hour season finale ep and break the news here, though that seems close to 90% likely now anyway.

I can hardly wait for his flashback, but they better not kill him off.
