I don't know why people always assume the DeGroots ever lived on the island. Dharma might have been their idea but they may never have lived there. If the hostiles wiped out the Dhrama scientists, why would they then hand over leadership to the son of Dharma's leaders?
I got the idea from Patchy that the Others were recruited by someone else. That someone else was their leader and Ben is probably his son -he inherited the job. Given the shows love of daddy isssues Jacob is probably a daddy and who better to be his son especially given their names?
