The statue was right in front of us all along, as well - we learned back in the Season 2 finale that the statue had four toes; now, the Lost producers have confirmed that the statue is of Twareret (sp?), the hippo goddesses. Hippos have four toes - it's something we could probably have figured out waaaay back in the day!!
Clever, clever writers...

Clever, clever writers... I thought that the statue was of Homer Simpson, cause of the 4 toes, or maybe Bart's...

It would be totally hysterical if it turns out Lost was connected to the Simpsons. ROTL!

I had heard about the name of the guy being Samuel as well. But at this point it's a lot of speculation so I'll just file it under interesting possibilities. I am more and more convinced that this is all about a long game played between Jacob and Loophole (as I've decided he should be called). The actual ending will be about something specific. Somebody does in Loophole or the humans overcome the immortals. But I think the theme is the nature of religion and how it has played with people over the years, and I think it's using the idea of fate or destiny vs. free will. I've become so taken with the idea of that tapestry is essentially the "box score" of Jacob's game. I don't think of it as a timeline as much as a representation the objectives and rules. It's been analyzed to pieces, so to speak, as to what the various panels are: The top is about the chosen ones, the next below, the rejected ones; the third, about the separating the wheat from the chaff and the bottom, the people brought to the island (to be used as game pieces, IMO). The greek text has been translated, but I've seen nothing yet on the hieroglyphics. The last line is the guess of what the greek text below the three ships says.

Brilliant, Mythic! "Only the dead have seen the end of war." I think it's also interesting that the rejected ones seem to be dancing to the harp--still trying hard to be worthy? Or completely oblivious to the game?

really interesting Mythic... And my question now is who is Loophole? Why does he wants to kill Jacob??? and what if Loophole is the good one???

Is anyone else intrigued by the fact that Ben seems to be reaching towards the rejected ones? And if they are still trying to be worthy, as pedanticbohemian suggests, then I think Ben is a good example of one of the rejected ones.

See I notice that he's reaching for the hieroglyphics. So I'm wondering if he knows what it says. That could be a real eye-opener. Or maybe something that would warrant tossing someone in the firepit.

I've only just realized this... the NKOTB lunchbox that Lil' Kate stole from the convenience store, in her scene with Jacob, is the same lunchbox that she and her childhood sweetheart used for their time capsule!

It's interesting that the Greek, "May the Gods grant thee happiness" lies just beneath the hieroglyphics Ben is reaching for. If this tapestry is similar to the Rosetta Stone, then the Egyptian will be similar or exactly matching that Greek line. Sort of a cruel irony if the dancing ones are indeed rejected by the Gods.
Of course, all bets are off if Man in Black is actually the good "God" in this scenario. Then Jacob's rejects would be the lucky ones, presumably.
I recently listened to one of Neil Gaiman's short stories dealing with a war in heaven between the angels and the supposed "fall" of Lucifer. One has to wonder if this battle of light and dark goes back to before the birth of mankind.
As to Ben recognizing and being able to read both the Greek and Egyptian text, I have no doubts whatsoever. I think there are depths of Ben we can't even fathom. Voracious reader that he is, I'm sure no area of study involving the Others and the Island have slipped his attention.

This is awesome, Tigerlily, and we see how far back the plane came from too in "The Incident." Again the magic box theme? Is it the same size as the one Ben took from the duct in the hotel room? And I have that Gaiman story "Murder Mysteries," I believe it is, on the fallen angels. I love it. That is an ancient theme. I know it's discussed with fascination among Christians. And there are cryptic messages in the Bible, including a reference to a book called the Book of the Wars of the Lord, which I heard is mythical, but I'm thinking all that stuff has to have a basis in fact somewhere. Else why would it exist? And that's a good point, Pendantic, that those hieroglyphics might well be the original text of the Greek. Which makes you wonder about the earlier tales of the struggles on the Island, long before the Black Rock and Oceanic 815. The struggles from the Roman era (why his name is Ricardus, perhaps) and if something happened back in 2,000 B.C. (circa the Egyptian civilization). Yikes.

Oh wow, Mythic, I didn't even notice the plane in that scene! Nice catch!! I think there are depths of Ben we can't even fathom. Voracious reader that he is, I'm sure no area of study involving the Others and the Island have slipped his attention. I think you're spot-on here, Pedantic. There is so much more to Ben that we have yet to discover. I have always had a gut feeling that Juliet was harboring many secrets as well, and we've barely scratched the surface of her knowledge. I am hoping we get more of her for this very reason; I'm not ready to let go of her secrets yet.

I'm still holding on to my fantasy belief that Ben is going to turn out to be the Archangel Gabriel.

I'm still holding on to my fantasy belief that Ben is going to turn out to be the Archangel Gabriel. i always thought Ben was god... Are we completely sure those hieroglyphs are Egyptian, cause they don't look that Egipt-ish to me... i mean, the first time i saw them in all the tapestry i thought they were, but then after watching the pic i'm not sure...
