This is the best article yet that I've seen that explains Michael view of his career and the money or lack of it that comes with it. It's from bankrate.com, so it's an unlikely place to find his name, I'm guessing "Lost" actor grounded in frugality

I don't drive at all, even though I can - for pretty much the reasons you give. I also think there are far too may cars on th road so rather than add to that I prefer to get public transport. Even my husband has ditched the car and gets a bus and train to work each day. It takes hm about 15 minutes longer but at least he can spend the time reading. Having said that, I don't think I would want us to be without a car altogether - just so long as he's driving it!

I grew up in a part of the country where there is no mass transit. I grew up with the idea that your ride is also your identity, a sign to others about who you are and what your values are. It also gives you a sense of freedom and independence, a sense of self worth. Odd when you think about it.

In my city we have a lot of problems with traffic (and parking!!!). And it's true, in our world, a good car it's a sign of power and money. Yes, a very weird thing.
