Yes, he was a freelance artist. I think I remember reading that he also had galleries where he sold his artwork to people.
Wow, he's done so many things; It's as though he's lived 9 lives.

My understanding he was a freelance artist. Likely that means the BG and NYT bought these drawings and own the copyrights to them. These would have predated digital storage and there prolly hasn't been a big demand to see his work. They might have warehoused it or even destroyed it. One would hope not, but I have seen weirder things happen. ah thats rubbish i would have loved to have seen some of his work. as a devoted fan of Michael its so lovely to have something im good at in common with him ;D

Michael Richard Emerson. ^_^ It sounds like a classy name, and since he's such an important person, it suits him perfectly.

Oh, no. He does come to the board. I do see him around. It must be in the morning, then. I thought he'd have gotten bored with reading our "I love Michael" posts.

One would hope not, but I have seen weirder things happen. ah thats rubbish i would have loved to have seen some of his work. as a devoted fan of Michael its so lovely to have something im good at in common with him ;D I understand your sentiments. Having witnessed firsthand how newspapers handle freelance work, this is how I've seen how it works: although it's not treated like trash, it's sometimes not always cherished as it should be. Unless the artist is well known or very savvy, it would be a virtual certainty that the paper would own the copyrights on it. From a company standpoint it gives them control of what they publish. Most writers don't like to think of it but they don't own the story published in a newspaper or magazine. The publisher does. It is rare for publishers to accept llmitations on publication and copyrights for freelance work. The artist or writer has to be quite well established to exact that kind of leverage. As a matter of policy most publishers don't sell prints of photos or artwork etc. unless it was published in their own editions. So for instance they might contract with an artist to do a multitude of illustrations but only publish one. They would keep all the illustrations as work product and if they sold prints it would be of the one they published. Now that Michael has achieved some fame, they might be encouraged to search their archives, assuming that he sold the works to them. If he retained the copyright on them, then he was a very smart guy (which we know he is) but often times struggling artists don't have that option. I worked for several years as an artist, but gave it up. It's a brutal existence, and I'm not cut out for that kind of lifestyle with such little return on a lot effort. In any case, I'm hoping we get see a few examples either from his own collection if fans can persuade him or his publishers to pull his work from their collections or archives.

well, he has some common names, so he's bound to have to say those once in a while. My name although not rare, isn't that common, so I'm never comfortable using it. (Ay! That's MY name, punk.)
