Michael Emerson, former Toledo resident and South Tama County High School graduate, recently made four appearances on NBC's The Practice.
Emerson, who was born and raised in Toledo, and whose grandfather farmed in the area, graduated from STC in 1972. He then attended Drake University and received a degree in Theater Arts. After graduating from college, Emerson relocated to New York to pursue a career in acting.
"Michael has always been a ham," stated his mother, Carol Emerson who lives with her husband, Ron in Grinnell. "In high school he was involved in speech and drama, attending state competitions and such."
Breaking into Broadway took some time, so Emerson did free lance work as an illustrator for publications such as The Boston Globe and The New York Times.
Emerson then attended the University of Alabama participating in the Alabama Shakespeare Fest and receiving his Master's Degree in Theater.
Emerson then partook in a repertory theater located in Jacksonville, Fla., acting in shows in cities such as Little Rock, Ark.
Later in his life, Emerson met President Clinton. Clinton remarked to Emerson he had watched him several times in plays with the theater group in Little Rock while he was the Governor of Arkansas.
Deciding to give New York one more try, Emerson returned taking small parts here and there. He then got his big break in a play about the trials of Oscar Wilde called "Gross Indecency" when the actor to play the lead was fired two weeks before its opening and Emerson was asked to step into the lead part. The off-Broadway hit was a smash selling out and receiving rave reviews in the New York Times. It then opened in San Fransico and Los Angeles.
After starring in "Gross Indecency" Emerson acted in plays such as "The Misanthrope", starring Uma Thurman; "The Ice Man Cometh" and "Give Me Your Answer Do". He is currently rehearsing for a play to open in Boston the day after Christmas called "Hedda Gabler" by Henry Gibson. Emerson will once again make an appearance in New York with this play, which will be lead by Kate Burton.
Emerson has also accepted parts in commercials, but The Practice is his first big time role on television. He is married to actress, Carrie Preston, who is currently acting in a play at the Guthrie in Minneapolis, Minn. called "Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf" starring Patrick Stewart.
