Heard/read any love lately for our favorite Other? This is the place. (I suppose inevitably this also includes kudos for Michael, but there's already threads good for that; this is more over-all). I'll start: In the 2005-2006 Tubey Awards, the very-popular Television Without Pity's end of the year picks, Henry was voted Runner-Up for "Best Villain." Go Henry! www.televisionwithoutpity.com/articles/content/a12241/(... yeah, it's a little in jest ["Best Performance by an Inanimate Object"] but wickedly smart and funny. Ana Lucia didn't come out too well, did she?]

From TV Guide: ASK MATT May 1, 2006 Question: I have been an avid fan of Lost for a long time now and must say that Michael Emerson (Henry Gale) is one of the best villains I have seen on television in recent years. My husband and I just began watching 24 faithfully in the past few weeks, and while we are enthralled with the suspense of the story line, we are unimpressed with Gregory Itzin's portrayal of President Logan as the villain. But Emerson's Henry is extremely intimidating and creepily believable; he's a wonderful character whom we love to hate. What do you think it takes to create a truly creepy and convincing villain? Do you think this is more reliant on the writing or the actor's abilities? Thanks. — Molly H. Matt Roush: A bit of both, surely. The best villains are also often the most enigmatic, and Henry Gale (at least up to now) certainly fits that bill. Michael Emerson was also amazing in a recurring role on The Practice way back in 2000, as the supercreepy serial killer William Hinks. But comparing this character to Gregory Itzin as Charles Logan is a bit unfair. And for what it's worth, Itzin has been enjoying quite a bit of acclaim (all deserved) for his sinister about-face. Logan is a bad guy, for sure, but this one's played more for pathos. Here's a guy who's in way over his head, caught up (don't ask me how) in a bizarre scheme that spiraled way out of control and claimed the life of a former president and a current secretary of state. Logan, despite his position of power, is essentially weak and pathetic, and he knows it, as do we. Whereas Gale is still a total mystery to us, and he seems to enjoy toying with everyone who comes in contact with him in the hatch. All we know for sure is that he's scary as all get-out. Both actors are doing breakout work this season, they're just doing it differently. www.tvguide.com/TV/Roush/AskMatt/default.htm?cmsRedir=true&rmDate=05012006&cmsGuid={CE7124AD-0DCA-4A94-9E36-A961D5B99C8C}&cmsSrch=true

The Lost Mind: The Sophomore Slump and Adventure on the Horizon Blogcritics.org - Aurora,OH,USA...Was Lost screwed for Emmy nominations? Absolutely. It is certainly more deserving of the best series nomination than the increasingly irrational 24, and how Michael Emerson's performance as Henry Gale escaped awards notice is beyond me. Still, I think that the effort made to set up the mysteries of the DHARMA Initiative burned up a lot of the dramatic momentum the first season had built up.... blogcritics.org/archives/2006/08/09/024058.php

A real-life example: I have never hated a TV character more fiercely than I did Ana Lucia, when she was going through all the hoopla of killing Henry. (keep in mind... at this point I'd never heard of michael emerson, nor did I find him particularly 'hot' (the finale showed me the light ;D )). It was hilarious - I was muttering at the TV, "Don't you dare kill him," and when it was revealed that she backed out, I was like, "HE LIVES!" (yes, I'm a dork ) Did anyone else have this reaction?

Oh, c'mon, don't be dissing "24!" *is an avid Jack Bauer fanatic* It may be a little irrational, but it's still much better-written than "Lost," on the whole. The characters are a lot better written, and the inconsistencies, while occasionally painful, are still more palatable than the ones on "Lost."
I must admit, I never thought to compare Henry to Logan...although in terms of who's creepier and more evil, Henry wins by a landslide. Logan was a tool, but whenever Itzin tried to be sinister he just looked like a fish with a hook in his lip.
Although...okay, damn. Now I want to see Michael play the president, so I can really compare the two!

Michael was nominated as "Best Actor or Actress in a Drama Series" in TV IV's 2005-6 IVy Awards. TV IV is "the online compendium of television knowledge that anyone can edit." "Emerson kept the audience guessing, causing us to change our minds from one episode to another with his unnerving mannerisms and sinister delivery. The standout actor on the show's tail end run of episodes." Member comment: "I think I speak for more than a few lost viewers when I say that Michael Emerson reinvigorated the series. The series took a sharp rise in quality in his very first episode, leading all the way to the finale. This effect can't be explained away just by the added mystery. Despite being beaten and tortured, Emerson had an extraordinary amount of charisma and presence." tviv.org/The_TV_IV:IVy_Awards/2006/Best_Guest_Actor_or_Actress_in_a_Drama_SeriesSo you see, Michael hasn't been completely shut out of awards season
