Thanks bobdoc!
I was thinking that same thing they mentioned. Where Ben is sort of like this genius in his own right. He's a master manipulator and probably has a bunch of talents we don't even known about. A lot of prodigies like that end up not knowing how to interact with other socially and tend to revert to how they would handle a situation when they were younger. Hence Ben acting like a selfish teenager when talking to Juliet on the hillside.

Does anyone remember the other time Ben lost his cool? I am drawing a blank. Maybe the time in Jacob's cabin?

It was either that, or when he was pleading with Jack not to call the freighter when he was tied to the tree. Other than his act in the hatch as Henry, that's the only other time I recall seeing Ben get as emotional as he did last night. Though since he was planning to gas everyone anyway if the freighter people did come, I don't know if that really counts.

I think he's (Michael Emerson) is talking about Ben "losing his cool" with Juliet and that would be the scene in Ben's kitchen when Juliet is yelling at him about not healing Rachel and accusing him of lying, and finally he shouts at her "I am not lying" or "I did not lie," and again, yes, it was a response as a young adult or teen would make it.

No its the scene when he shoots locke. i read it in his interview in the lost mag, and he described that scene as ben throwing a tantrum then and if u think about it he does. when he ask what jacob said. and john replied "help me" ben said. "well i hope he helps you john!" (something like that) in a huff and then storms off.

I was taking this totally in the context of what he said in the video podcast, Michael didn't mention tantrum there, Elizabeth did. And if you watch that kitchen scene, Ben definitely lost it and yelled at Juliet. He came off totally sounding like a child there too. Not disputing the magazine account, but I'd say I add the kitchen scene to the "losing his cool" as well.

Ben didn't lose it out of anger in the Juliet kitchen, he lost it cause he was scared due to the cancer and to Juliet's anger. As such, the man who always has a big word to say really had nothing to say to respond to a real emotional outburst. Seen in the context of Ben's obsessed love, it makes more sense that he was so desperate to convince Juliet he kept his word.

When I first saw the kitchen scene, I was totally taking it that it all about Ben objecting to a challenge that he didn't keep his word. I'm sure the cancer scare primed things, but when Juliet was crying and shouting, telling he was lying, it was the trigger that set off the gun. It is so important to Ben that people see that he is not a liar, he blew his top. In his next line, his voice was shaking. I almost thought he was fighting the urge to cry. He was like that when he shouted "You're mine." Only this time his eyes were glistening. This time he took time to gather himself. Man that was awesome acting. How do you do that? Make your eyes water, your voice break. That is just awesome. (I have always wondered how actors could cry on command.)
The general talk around a lot of the Lost sites not only from the critics but the fans, was this ep was supposed to have been about Juliet but it ended up being about Ben and largely because Michael Emerson's acting.
And it is the strongest stuff about the ep. I've watched it three times and the whole Dan+Charlotte go to the Tempest story still just seems liked a muddle. Maybe I've got the wrong take on that.
