Summary: We get a look inside Ben's past and what he had to sacrifice for his position
Warnings: No warning this is completely FICTION and based on nothing but my imagination
Status of Fic: Complete
Author's Notes/Disclaimer: I do not own Lost or Ben. I own Caleb Linus and he is completly made up and fiction.
Allow me to set the records straight:
There are many things the books don’t tell you. Many things are often left out in the translation. But one thing is certain; behind every great man is another man who shakes his head in disparagement.
Benjamin Linus was apart of a family once. A mother, a father….a brother; a twin. I heard of him once, his name was Caleb Linus. Tragic story really. They grew up so close but one day…Ben’s job called for more…so much more. It called for him to slaughter his brother. But how could he? How could he when he loved his brother so much? The answer was easy…get someone else to do it.
Caleb wasn’t as heartless when it came to duty as Ben was. He was funny, compassionate, and very intelligent. He voiced his opinion and never faltered o mater how it made people think of him. Ben never told him, but he always looked up to his younger brother and held him in high regards. He even made him his right hand man.
Together, they made a great team; powerful and smart. They worked up in the ranks until Ben was one step away from becoming leader. That was when Jacob pulled him into his office and told him that the only way for him to prove himself…to become what he was meant to become…that he had to eliminate that which was holding him back. He had to murder his beloved brother.
He left his office that day, appalled at the very idea. His brother meant EVERYTHING to him. He always stood by his side and could always pull strings to get him out of trouble. But this was position of honor was what he always wanted….what he knew he needed to do.

That night, as they ate, Caleb looked over at him and smiled. “So what are you thinking about? Your mind is turning…I can tell.”
“Yea…” Ben picked at his chicken. “I was offered the position today.” Caleb almost choked on hi food as he whipped his mouth.
“Oh my god Ben! Congratulations!” he grinned. “What task were you appointed?” Ben looked up at him, surprised. “Oh don’t be surprised. I know everyone’s given some sort of task before they can move into a position of power so they can prove they can handle it.”
“What else do you know?” Ben asked as he sat forward in his chair.
“A lot. I’ve been looking through some things. I could pretty much run this rock if I wanted to.”
After that Ben was too focused on what his brother just said to hear him blab on. He had to kill his brother because he knew too much. It all made sense now. He HAD to die. If he didn’t, Ben would look like he was in on it and they would be charged with treason.

“Ben what are you saying?” Juliet looked into his eyes, shocked.
“I have to kill him.” He said, gripping the side of the kitchen sink.
“What re you asking me to do.” She said and went to his side, leaning against the counter.
“I need you to come up with something….anything that will do it fast and without pain.”
“You’re actually going to go through with this?! Ben I thought you were better than this!”
“I have no choice!” he whirled around, enraged. “By becoming a person of power, I can get us out of here.”
“You’d sacrifice him, your own brother, your TWIN all for the sake of freedom?!”
“He would want to help. Hell, he’d kill me if it were the reverse.”
“No we wouldn’t, Ben. He’s not you.” She said through gritted teeth.
Ben’s lips formed a thin line. “This conversation is over. You will do what I ask.”
----------------------------------------------
Ben dried the dishes as Caleb walked through the door.
“Hey you” he grinned and playfully hit him in the arm. “How was your day?” he asked as he grabbed a towel, helping Ben dry the remaining dishes.
“It was good……good” he trailed off as he looked out the window. He set the glass down and turned to face him, knocking it off, it shattering to the floor. “crap” swore Ben as he kneeled to pick up the shards.
“Oh Ben don’t worry about it, I’ll get it.” He knelt and started after the smaller splinters. “Ouch!” he winced as he brought his finger to his mouth. “Bloody glass” he chuckled.
“I’ll get a broom.” Ben stood and went to the closet. He returned with a brush and dustpan. As he got to the mirror he noticed Juliet approaching his house. He knelt and started to sweep up the rest of the glass as Caleb went to the sink and washed his cut.
“It just won’t stop bleeding. I guess I got cut deeper than I thought.” He pinched the cut and placed it in his mouth then took it out and looked at it again. “Ha! It looks like a smilie face.”
Ben went over to take a look. As Caleb looked up at him, his smile faded. “What is your task Ben….” He said. Ben did not make eye contact. “What do you have to do.”
Ben turned away and started towards the door.
“Ben! Please…” Caleb went after him.
“No Caleb…” he said exasperated as Caleb turned him to face him.
“What is he making you do……what do you have to sacrifice for this job?” he asked, looking into his eyes. Suddenly his went wide and he jerked forward. His hand went up to the back of his neck. When he retracted it, he held a small dart in it. “What?” he slurred and collapsed to his knees. He looked up at Ben, tears filling his eyes. “Ben….” He said as a single tear trickled down his face.
Ben’s cheeks were already wet with his own tears. “Oh God Caleb,” he collapsed to his knees next to him, taking him in his arms. “Oh God please forgive me.”
“I am your other half Ben……and I mean nothing to you?” he said, looking into his eyes. His hands fell to his sides and he didn’t move.
Ben became hysterical as he held his brother’s body in his hands. “You mean the world to me….my brother….my friend.”
----------------------------------------------
Ben believed his brother dead until Juliet told him of a spider on the island whose venom paralyzed her victim and slowed their heartbeat so much that even a doctor may think them dead. She told him that his body would be transported home where he’d be given an anecdote. But Ben would never see him again. Ben didn’t care…..his brother was free, not intentional, but at least they both got what they wanted. Power and freedom. But was it enough for Ben to loose a brother? We may never know.

Ben sat at his computer’s desk with a smirk on his face. “Good bye, Caleb,” he said and closed the laptop, standing, walking to the door, turning the light off, and closing the door.
