This fic is over at LF and is known as "Unspoken" but I feel "Denial" is the better title. This fan fic is Ben and Kate pairing and based upon the idea of there being 2 groups of "others." Enjoy and do tell me what you think but keep in mind it's a WIPPrelude Droplets of water trickled down his bare skin, covering every inch of him, as he stood perfectly still. The water made a path to the tip of his nose where it ran off it like a storm drain. His hands gripped the walls on either side of him, his grip so hard his knuckles were turning white. He tilted his head up and opened his mouth, breathing in the soothing steam the hot water gave off as water collected inside his mouth. He turned his head, spitting the water out as he opened his eyes. He relaxed his grip then ran a hand through his hair. He winced and looked over his shoulder at his incision from the spinal surgery. It was healing pretty well but the muscles were still sore. He shut the water off, grabbed his towel and dried himself off. He then wrapped the towel around his waist as he headed to the lockers. Why he stayed there instead of returning to his home was a mystery to him. He just couldn’t leave, something made him stay, but he couldn’t put his finger on it. He placed his pants on and did them up. He placed the towel over the locker door as he grabbed his shirt. Buttoning it up he found himself thinking about all he had to do that day. He sighed and shut the locker door, bringing the towel with him. “Time for work,” Ben muttered as he left the room. Kate awoke as her cage door squeaked open. There was Tom with that smirk on his face. “Time to get squeaky clean again before you get dirty” he said as he took her arm and led her out of the cell. She rolled her eyes. She knew the drill by then. She got to the locker room and waited until he left then stripped, placing her clothes in the locker then closed it, grabbing the towel that was provided and headed to the stall. She turned the water on, prepared for the icy sting of the water but was surprised to find the water hot. She smiled and stepped underneath it as a moan of pleasure washed over her. She placed her hands on either side of her upon the wall and clutched it. She breathed in and tightened her grip, knuckles turning white. She breathed in deeply and exhaled, enjoying breathing in the steam. She smiled and opened her mouth, looking up into the falling water. The water ran down her body, along her curves, to the drain. She ran her hands through her hair as she spit the water out of her mouth. She washed herself then turned the water off. She grabbed the towel and dried herself off, wrapping it around her. She made her way to the lockers but stopped when she noticed something upon the floor. She went over and picked it up. A silver cross. A plain, silver cross. There was no cord with it, just the charm. She stood and went to her locker. She opened the locker and placed the item inside the locker as she hung the towel over the door. She pulled the dress over her head then adjusted it. She then placed her undies on and tucked the charm in her dress. She then closed the locker door and walked to the door where Tom was waiting for her “Time to work,” she muttered as she left the room.

Chapter One:
Tom led Kate towards the door to take her to the spot for her to work when Ben turned the corner, wearing his spectacles. He had to stop short before walking into them. He looked up at Tom.
“I am so sorry Ben….I didn’t….” Ben put his hand up as Kate looked at him curiously. She had never heard of his real name until then. He looked into her eyes then to Tom.
“Where are you taking her?” he asked, furrowing his brows in confusement.
“To work…….like usual” Tom said but his voice got drowned out as Ben and Kate looked into each others eyes. They could hear each other’s breathing like a plane flying overhead. Kate gripped her dress’ fabric, digging her nails in it as she fixed it. For some reason she wanted to look her best at this moment. She raised a hand and tucked her fugitive strands of hair behind her ear. Her movements seemed to be in slow motion. Everything seemed to have stopped and it was just the two of them. Ben looked away as he removed his glasses. She watched the swiftness of his hands and watched as he cleaned them off. She noticed how he didn’t look very well, drained, exhausted, yet he had to continue working. She didn’t know anything just the fact that he never came to her cage for the past week or two. She remembered looking for him because…he was always checking in…then he stopped…and there was no explanation. She found herself looking for him, wondering where he went, but there were neither answers nor explanations.
“No…..” Ben said as he placed his spectacles back upon his nose and looked at his accomplice.
“No?” Tom asked, letting go of Kate’s arm and cocked his head at his leader. “No? Ben, you forget……”
“I forget nothing” Ben snapped as his lips tightened into a straight line. “But you obviously forget your place.”
Kate watched the two and backed up, looking over her shoulder at the door just a few feet from them. She glanced at them once more as she slid her foot backwards for another spot. A few more paces and she’d be free to find where they had taken Sawyer two days earlier.
“You can try, Kate” Ben said. Kate jumped. He hadn’t looked in her direction at all and she hadn’t made a sound. She saw him turn his head to look at her. She half expected to see that malice look; the look from the dock when he spoke to Michael then Jack. Yet when his eyes met hers they were soft. “But you wouldn’t get far.” Those words hardly seemed to come across as a threat.
“Where’s Sawyer?” Kate noticed that as those words fell from her lips, the look in Ben’s eyes changed; instead of smiling, his eyes were full of pain. She suddenly regretted her sudden inquiry.
“She wants to see the conman…” he said but the question wasn’t directed to Zeke. He seemed to be telling himself what she said, as if he was expecting her to want to see someone else. Ben noticed Tom looking at him peculiarly and looked at him, seeming to snap out of whatever thoughts were racing through his mind. “So take her to him,” he said.
Kate furrowed her brow questioningly. Who was this man standing in front of her? This wasn’t the same man she dined with besides the water. His dangerous persona seemed to of melted away as well as the ice around his heart.
As Tom made his way to her she found herself not wanting to run. But when he reached for her arm and took a hold of it harshly, she tensed up and instinctively jerked her arm away. She looked up at him and narrowed her eyes, fuming.
“Take her to the conman and wait for me.” Ben instructed as he turned and headed down the hall. As Tom reached for her arm once more Ben added, “Oh and Tom…let’s show her some hospitality. No man handling,” as he disappeared from sight.
---------------------------------------
Once out of sight Ben started to grit his teeth. He’d been soft. What was he thinking? They had to be in control. True things had changed but they needed what little control they had to make sure the transport would go smoothly. Chaos would surely draw attention. Attention from those whom he didn’t wish to draw attention from. He placed a hand upon the wall and tightened his muscles as he bent over to refocus himself. He heard the click of heels on the linoleum and straightened himself up in time for Juliet to walk around the corner.
“Everything alright Ben?” she asked with her menacing look she always had.
“I’m fine,” he said, walking past her and around the corner. Once out of sight, he let out a long sigh, and ran his hands over his face then through his hair. He winced again, as the muscles stretched at the seams of the stitches, and swore. He reached his hand down his back and felt wetness.
“Great Ben, tear your stitches, make it bleed,” he muttered and continued down the corridor. Just then Alex appeared as she entered from the outside. When she saw him her eyes lit up just a little bit from her gloomed face. “What’s wrong?” Ben asked as he cocked his head in puzzlement.
“What did you do to Karl?” she asked as she closed the space between them.
Ben furrowed his brow. “What are you talking about?” He noticed she was trembling with emotion and held her in his arms. “You’re not making any sense”
“I’m not making any sense? You’re not making any sense. How do you not know what is going on around her, dad? You’re in charge.” “I’m in charge, yes, but you seem to forget that I have been out of commission these past few days and that Juliet has been acting in my stead.”
“He disappeared long before your surgery,” Alex retorted through gritted teeth. Ben fell silent and let go, standing straight up. “You authorized it didn’t you” she asked, tears falling down her cheeks. When he didn’t reply, her rage took a hold of her. “Why?! Why did you take him away from me?”
“Stop it! Just stop it” Ben interrupted her, face red. “I did it for you. I did everything for you. He is dangerous. He is not to be trusted…” “But then again so are you, Ben” she enunciated his name.
Ben’s eyes narrowed as he tried to control his fury so he didn’t act out irrationally. “Alex, you are treading on thin ice,” he said, lips forming into a thin line. “You have no idea what I am dealing with given my authoritive position.
“You’re right, because you don’t tell me anything. You claim you love me yet you turn around and lie to me, keeping me in the dark. Why?”
“The less you know the better,” Ben said as he walked passed her.
“You’re always walking away. You’re better at doing that than being a father,” and with that, Alex disappeared. Ben sighed and glanced back over his shoulder to speak to her only to find Kate and Tom staring at him perplexed.
“Get out of here!” he demanded.

As Kate was pulled from the scene, her mind was filled with so many questions. Alex was so sure of Ben as a person when she attached the dig site with her little sling shot. Now, here she was, defying her father, her own flesh and blood. And who was this Karl that had her all fired up? She had mentioned him back at the site, asked Danny about him.
“Come on, Kate,” Tom said and brought her to the site. These people are so confusing, thought Kate. And Ben’s even more intriguing. She started figuring out the one called Juliet and the one called Tom, yet Ben was still a mystery. What is going on in his mind? Something is troubling him, but what?
Sawyer looked up as they entered the clearing. “There ya are, Freckles, what took you so long?” Kate’s nose wrinkled as she walked by and picked up her shovel. “Awe come on sweet cheeks, talk to me here.”
“Get back to work,” Tom said, staring him down.
“Yes sir, whatever you say sir,” he said with his conman smirk. He watched as Kate started to dig more rocks, her dress swaying with each movement. He chuckled “Say Freckles, why are you wearing that brand new dress while working? You’re just gonna end up ruining it.”
“Why do you care, Sawyer?” she asked, glancing over at him.
“Well, it’s such a lovely dress, I would hate to see it ruined.”
“Why? So you can see my ass?” she retorted.
“Been there, done that,” he said, fuming. Why was she being so difficult?
“Oh shut up, Sawyer.”
“Touchy, what side of the cage did you wake up on? I’m only yanking your chain.”
“Maybe I don’t want my chain yanked.”
“Jesus Kate! Seriously, what’s bugging you?”
“I don’t know,” she said, attacking a pile of dirt violently.
“Whoa, whoa” Sawyer went over to her and placed a hand on the shovel, stilling her. “Chica, what has gotten into you? What happened?” Kate looked into his eyes as her lower lip quivered and her eyes watered as she shook her head. “What did he say to you?” his brow furrowed as Juliet and Danny rushed over to them. Danny grabbed his arm and pulled him away. “What did he do to you Kate?” he asked as he was hit across the jaw and knocked to the ground.
Juliet took her arm and pulled her back towards the building. “Come on, Kate, you’ve had enough.”
---------------------------------------------------------
Ben was sitting in his office, scratching words in a brown leather bound notebook. He was deep in thought when Juliet burst in the door.
“Damn it Juliet, how many times do I have to tell you to always knock before you enter…”
“We have a situation Ben, it’s Kate.”
He dropped his pen, “What happened?”
“She just….broke down, I believe she’s having a mental breakdown, or worse.”
“And why would you think I care?” He asked, mood changing, picking up his pen to continue writing.
“Well, for one, you’re in love with her,” she said as she sat down in the seat across from him. His head snapped up.
“What?! I’ve never heard anything so preposterous.”
“Ben.” He turned his gaze from her. “Ben, look at me.” He reluctantly did as she asked. “You don’t need to lie to me. You know very well I can tell when you’re lying; your eyes become empty.”
Ben stood and walked to the door, closing it. “I want to make something perfectly clear, Juliet.” He made his way back over to his desk, but instead of sitting in his chair, he placed both hands upon the desk’s surface. “I would never associate myself with one of them let alone let myself become enamored. So, Juliet, thank you for your concern, I’m flattered, but it is unnecessary. Place Kate back in her cell until she calms down.” As he sat back in his chair he added, “You are dismissed.”
Juliet got up and went to the door, placing her hand upon the handle. “Don’t deny yourself Ben, the only person who will suffer in the end is you. Get over this infatuation before it impairs your judgment.” She opened the door and exited, closing it behind her. Ben clenched his jaw and fiddled with his pen. He refused to look down at his book. He knew it was there. He knew because he wrote it just moments before; those eight little words. Why does she make me feel like this?
--------------------------------------------
Kate sat in her cage, knees drawn up to her chest. Why did she act so strange? What had come over here? Why did Sawyer rub her the wrong way like he did? She usually didn’t mind his cockiness yet today he was just down right annoying.
A few hours later Sawyer was led back to his own cage. Once secured, and the Others left, he approached his bars. “What the hell was that all about?”
“I don’t want to talk about it,” she said through clenched teeth.
“Like hell. You think you can suddenly go emotional in front of me and then not tell me why?”
“Yes.” she quickly replied. “I don’t have to justify myself to anyone, especially to someone like you.”
Sawyer fell silent, his eyes burning into hers. “Oh you had to go and play that card.” He hit the bars “Who would you talk to huh? Ben? Must be him because he is so much better than me. That must be it,” he state sarcastically.
“At least he’s doing something with his life.”
“Oh yea, kidnapping people, holding them hostage, and forcing them to work is becoming a very popular job field. I should jump on the band wagon, eh?”
“Just because you could never measure up to a man like him doesn’t mean you have to down talk him like that.”
“Oh why don’t you just lay down and open your legs for him, Freckles. You do that so well.”
“How dare you!” she screamed as she clutched the bars, knuckles turning white. “You know nothing about me.”
“That’s right Kate, I know nothing about you…nothing of significance.”
She fell silent as a tear fell down her cheek. He pushed away from the bars and retreated to the back of her cage, curling up and burying her face in her arms. After awhile, she cried herself to sleep.

When Kate awoke, she noticed a figure outside her cage. She lifted her head to get a better look and saw that is was Ben. She sat up quickly, fixing her dress. He didn’t say anything as he squatted at the door, holding a plate with some sort of sandwich on it and a thermos in the other.
“Hungry?” He asked as he placed the plate through the small opening in the door and upon the ground. He looked up into her eyes. She felt a little funny in her stomach and had to turn her head away. “I brought you a chicken sandwich and some vegetable soup,” he said as he placed the thermos beside the plate. “I figured I’d let you choose what type of drink you’d like…spice things up a bit.” Ben smirked and looked at his hands, picking at his fingernails.
“Do you have any liquor?” she asked, looking up at his face. He chuckled and looked up. Their eyes met and the air seemed to get heavier for Kate and suddenly she couldn’t breathe very well.
“Only for sanitizing purposes, none for pleasure.” Ben looked up at the sky and shivered. ”But it’s a bit chilly out tonight.” He turned his gaze to her, seeing goose bumps form upon her skin. “I’m sure I can part with a little so you can have some warmth.” He stood and turned, taking a few steps towards the building.
“But Ben…” she said, pulling herself to her feet. He stopped and turned. “That will help for only a moment. It’s not worth it. Might I have something else to keep me warm?”
Ben was surprised at how desperately she said his name. He was about to answer with a ‘sure’ when he was reminded of his position. He clenched his jaw. “I only offered the liquor, nothing else. And since you seem to be just fine without it, you’ll just have to do with nothing tonight.”
Kate’s jaw dropped as she watched him leave. Why was it whenever she thought she was getting somewhere with him, he’d shut her out? She shivered, teeth chattering. It was going to be a long night.
-------------------------------------------------
Ben sighed as he entered his office, shutting the door behind him.
“That good of a night, eh?” Tom asked, making Ben jump.
“God damn it Tom!” he said, hand over his heart. “What are you trying to do kill me?”
“I’m sorry Ben,” Tom stood from his seat.
Ben noticed his journal was still open, sitting in plain view. “What do you want?”
“I just wanted to warn you that tonight is going to be unbearably cold. I understand you had Ford moved indoors to separate the two but Austin is still outside.”
“You’re point Tom?” He sighed, folding his arms over his chest.
Tom was shocked “Ben, she’s going to freeze…..”
“Why do I care Tom, we have no more holding cells inside.”
“So you’re going to let her just die out there?!”
“Are you questioning my judgment?!” Ben raised his voice. Tom remained silent, shaking his head, as he headed to the door.
“I hope you know what you’re doing, Ben.”
-------------------------------------------------------
Ben yawned as he took his glasses off, whipping his eyes. It was 2 AM and everyone else was asleep. He shivered a bit as he swiveled in his chair, bored out of his mind. He looked over the screens and as his eyes fell on Kate’s monitor he sat up and leaned in closer. She was curled up in the fetal position and didn’t look well. He sighed and stood, grabbing his coat and headed out the door and to the cages.
He made his way over to Kate’s and unlocked it, stepping inside and over to her side. As he got closer he saw that her skin was a tint of blue. “Oh God.” He dropped to his knees and checked her pulse. It was there but faintly. He scooped her up and hurried inside.
He made his way to his quarters and into his bathroom where he set her on the floor, propped against the wall, as he got the water running in the bathtub, warming the water. He then turned to Kate and picked her up, supporting her. “Forgive me,” he whispered into her ear as he stripped her down to her bra and underwear. He then lifted her and gently set her down in the tub. He then stripped down to his boxers and positioned himself so he was sitting behind her with her situated between his legs, cradled in his arms.
He held her for many minutes in silence. He sighed deeply and nuzzled her head. “I am so sorry Kate,” he muttered, eyes tearing up. “I can be so stubborn at times.” Kate shifted in his arms and laid her hand upon his chest as she nuzzled his neck. He closed his eyes “You’re delusional Kate. You would never do this under your right mind.” He opened his eyes and looked down at her “Not to mention I’m not trying to start anything here. I’m just trying to get your body temperature back to normal.” She nuzzled him more, making little noises as her hands caressed his chest and abs. He gasped. “Kate please.” Her hand then turned his head softly towards hers where she lifted her lips to his, kissed them softly, then passed out. Ben rested his head back, closing his eyes, breathing deeply.

I can visualize the last sentence so well. It's definitely Ben, and definitely something the writers would have him do. I like that it's not "gross" - they don't go after each other like animals; Ben doesn't freak out when she kisses him and shove his tongue in her mouth or have other - physical reactions; it's, well, sane. With some real feeling. You also have a knack for writing Ben-ish dialogue - not easy.

Yes, keep going, please... Kate may be annoying, but she's not completely mad - how could she possibly prefer Sawyer to Ben???
