Ben was walking next to Richard. All of them were wearing the obligatory raggedy clothes. As they were walking, Ben started thinking about the first time he met Richard and how he was wearing raggedy clothes then as well. Ben remembered that day vividly. He was about 10 years old, chasing his mother’s spirit. Richard soothed his sad yearnings for his mother. He told him that Jacob conjured up his mother’s spirit. And, because he was able to see his mother’s spirit, he was special—just how special, they were yet to see.
Ben told Richard that he wanted to leave the DHARMA compound. He wanted to join the Hostiles. Richard told him to be patient. It was not yet time—the same exact words his mother had told him.
At Richard’s urging, Ben returned to live with his father and continued his education given by DHARMA. As requested by Richard, he began to pay special attention to all that DHARMA was to teach him. It was going to be important as he grew older. In addition, Ben was also tutored by the Hostiles on a weekly basis. They taught him about the environment, the island’s history, and the island’s power and how to harness them, as well as the many experiments the DHARMA people inflicted on the natives.
Richard told Ben that those who believe in Jacob would never suffer illness or death. DHARMA was sure that there was some scientific basis to their health and longevity. The natives were poked, probed, and put through numerous humiliating and painful tests. No evidence of their longevity was found. No one knew that Jacob was the reason they were the way they were. The natives kept quiet.
Ben, under Richard’s tutelage learned to love Jacob, learned to believe in Jacob, and learned to hate the DHARMA people even more. He learned not to fear the smoke monster, which Richard told him was conjured up by Jacob to screen out the bad guys from the good guys. He learned that wearing raggedy clothes would immediately tell the smoke monster that he was one of the good guys. It was safer to trek the jungle that way.
As years passed by, Ben began to believe that he was special. He learned that the DHARMA people were going to be purged; and by joining the cause, he made sure that neither he nor Annie would be among those eliminated when the purge would occur.
Ben was thinking about all these past events when he saw an old shack up the hill and an old man sitting on a rocking chair on the dilapidated porch. “Richard, who is that old man sitting on that porch?"
Richard looked at Ben with total disbelief. “You see the man sitting on the porch?”
“Yes, I do. He is sitting and rocking on that chair. Don’t you see him?”
“That’s Jacob. No one sees Jacob. No one. The only ones who see him are extremely special. I knew you were special, Ben. I just didn’t know how special. ”
Ben didn’t know what to make of Richard’s statement. He made a point to one day come back to the cabin and to talk to the man they called Jacob.
It was dusk by the time they reached Danielle’s campsite. They quickly built a fire that would produce a black smoke in the sky. They wanted to whet the woman’s curiosity. They wanted her to leave the baby there and they would take it away from her. But alas, what they planned, did not work.
Danielle did come out to investigate, but she brought the baby with her. She was not as crazy as they thought that she was. In fact, she was a good mother. She probably would have raised a wonderful child. But the others had different plans for her.
Danny approached Danielle from behind, grabbed her neck, and started to choke her. Tom grabbed the baby from her hands. Ben was horrified. He was not yet hardened enough to see suffering and not care. He yelled at the top of his lungs not to kill the woman. He didn’t know that he would one day regret that move. But he didn’t want to have another secret to keep from Annie.
The woman, who was weakened from having given birth a week earlier, collapsed on the ground. She didn’t have the strength to fight them. All she could do was pathetically scream her child’s name, "Alexandra, Alex" and scream in French, “N'emmenez pas s'il vous plaît mon enfant.” ("Please don't take my baby away.")
The baby started screaming. And they ran away with her. Danielle upon hearing her child screaming was totally distraught. They didn't care. Their mission was accomplished. They left Danielle crying.
That momentous day changed Ben’s life forever.
To be continued…..
