They reached the Hostile’s campground around 2 a.m. The baby fell asleep out of exhaustion. Both, Tom and Danny wanted to stay for the rest of the night, but Ben had other plans.
“Let’s stay for the rest of the night,” Tom said. “We are all tired now. We can get back to the barracks by early morning when everybody is asleep.”
“No,” said Ben. “The baby is asleep and I don’t want to take any chances otherwise. We are continuing our journey.”
As quietly as they came to the campground that’s how quietly they went back to the barracks. When they reached the pylons, once again, Ben punched in the code. The magnets quieted down and everyone slipped back in. Ben repunched the code to activate the pylons once again.
Once inside the compound, Ben took the baby from Tom and told his friends to go home and pretend that they were home the whole time. They were not to let anyone know about knowing about the existence of the baby.
“So what are you going to do?” asked Danny. “Hide the baby forever?”
“You just act as surprised as everyone will be when I make the announcement,” said Ben.
Tom and Danny knew better not to argue with Ben. He always knew what to do. Tom was a new recruit to DHARMA, and he quickly learned that staying with Ben may save his hide. He was on the island only 5 years, but 6 months after he started working on the island he learned that there was a big animosity among the natives and the settlers. He wanted to turn back home, but had a contractual agreement to stay 5 years.
Tom came to the island to help take care of the animals. He had a degree in veterinary science. He never completed his work and could not be veterinarian. He obtained a job working in the Philadelphia Zoo. He was the polar bears caretaker. He loved the job, but the pay was lousy. One day, he found a flyer about making a difference in the world. He called the number, and a few months later, found himself on an island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.
Everything that he was told about the island was true. It was beautiful; it had great weather and the polar bears were not bothered by the climate. They did not need to be placed in specially cooled houses. The bears were able to be caged outside. And boy were they intelligent. Part of Tom’s job, other than feed them, was to evaluate their intelligence level. Tom was afraid that one day, the bears would figure out how to escape from the cages. Whatever they were feeding those bears, Tom wished he could have. Certainly Ben had some. The man was superintelligent.
The memory of meeting Ben was vividly ingrained in Tom’s memory. Ben was delivering polar bear food supply to the Hydra and Tom was the only one present to sign for them. Somehow the two men started talking. Tom fell instantly in love. He didn’t dare say so to Ben. Even in the hippy setting of DHARMA Initiative, homosexuality was frowned upon. Ben’s deep blue eyes made Tom quiver. He knew that Ben was not gay. But he would rather have him as a friend than not have him at all.
Tom slowly found out that the natives, who were known as Hostiles were not friendly to the DHARMA people. There were numerous times that the Hostiles would attack them, but never the areas in which Ben was present. Tom made it a point to be near Ben as often as he could. And as he was not able to leave the island due to contractual agreement, he was going to do anything to preserve his life, even joining the cause against the Hostiles. Tom decided that he would follow Ben anywhere, even to hell.
Danny, who came to the island one year after Ben, was grateful to have earned his friendship, Hot tempered by nature, he had difficulty making friends. No one liked him; no one trusted him, except for Ben. Whenever Danny found himself in a jam, Ben would get him out. And, in turn, Danny was there for Ben. Ben could easily be intimidated by bullies, but not when Danny was around. Ben was the brains; Danny was the muscle. And, Danny, like Tom, would follow Ben to hell if he was asked to do so.
Hence, as Ben requested, Tom and Danny walked home together. None of them said a word. Their promise to pretend not to know about the previous day’s escapade began immediately.
