Ben entered his house ever so quietly. He did not want to disturb his father should he be asleep on the couch. Luckily, this time, Roger Linus was sleeping in his bedroom. The baby made some noises, and Ben knew it would be a matter of time before she would start bawling. He wanted to get to Annie before the baby would start demanding attention.
He walked into their bedroom, and found Annie asleep on the bed. He looked at her lovingly and felt bad that he needed to disturb her sleep. But she would be happy to see the baby, anyway. He placed the baby at the foot of the bed and was pleased that she still continued to sleep.
“Annie, honey, wake up. Wake up sleepy head.”
Upon hearing his voice, she opened her eyes, stretched, and gave him a smile. “Where were you all day? I missed you.”
“I went to see Richard about the baby. It took longer than I thought it would. I would’ve told you otherwise.” Ben was amazed at himself at how easily he could lie.
“The baby! Is it here? Is it a boy or a girl? Oh, Ben, I am so excited.”
“It’s a girl.” Ben knew that this was the time that he had to lay out his plan to her. “Listen, Annie, we need to get our story straight on how we got this baby. DHARMA would take the baby from us if they'd find out that she’s an orphan. You know that since I am a worker, they would not award me with just any adoption. You know that we can only adopt children whose parents’ were workers as well. So, we have to tell them that she is ours. You gave birth to her. Do you understand?”
Annie kept looking at him incredulously. She couldn’t believe what he was proposing. “Ben, how on Earth are you going to convince anyone that I gave birth? We never talked about that I was pregnant to anyone. How are you going to pull this one off? Maybe we could tell them that the Hostiles dropped the baby off to us.”
“No, that wouldn’t work. They may kill the baby. You know how they feel about the Hostiles.”
“You are right. Ben. How do you propose that we tell anyone that I was pregnant? No one would believe such a lie. Maybe we should let someone else adopt her. I can live with that possibility.”
“Well, I can’t,” he declared in a very determined and angry tone.
Annie knew that when Ben was determined, she better let him have his way. There was no way of stopping him. She took a deep breath, let out a big sigh, and asked: “What do you propose we do?”
“Don’t take this badly, but you gained quite a few pounds since we got married. We will tell them that because you were heavier, we were not aware that you were pregnant, and to our surprise, you gave birth tonight.”
Although Annie was hurt about him mentioning her weight gain, she knew that he was right. She did let herself go. Ben didn’t seem to mind, and she, because she was unhappy about her parents disowning her, just kept eating her sorrows away.
“Ben, what about your father? He will know the truth. How could I give birth and he not know it? He lives here.”
“He’s a drunk. Half the time, he doesn’t remember where or what he was doing at night. He falls asleep on the couch and is not aware that we exist. No, we won’t have trouble with him at all.”
Annie did what she always did, she gave up fighting him. “Tell me about the birth. How did it happen?
Where’s the placenta? When did I give birth? How do I feed her? What do we name her?”
“You had some cramps. You thought that they were menstrual cramps.”
“Ben,” Annie interrupted. “How come I didn’t know that I didn’t have a period for 9 months?”
“You don’t keep track of them. You are so busy taking care of me and my father that time just slipped by. OK?”
She nodded “yes.”
“Anyway, the cramps started getting rougher. You woke me up, and then you started bleeding. Things went so fast that I suddenly noticed that the baby’s head was passing through. I got rid of the placenta by burning it. I will burn some liver from the freezer to simulate the burning of the placenta. Now, about feeding her: You don’t want to nurse, which makes you eligible to get formula for her. How’s that sound? Can you keep track of this story?”
“Yes,” she whispered. “What do we name her? I’d like to name her Theresa. What do you think?”
Ben thought about that. He decided that he would honor the woman from whom he stole the child. He wanted to do a good for his bad behavior. “I want to name her Alexandra, after Alexander the great,” he lied to Annie. “We can call her Alex for short.”
The baby started to cry, and Annie’s attention was diverted. She accepted the name Ben gave her. She always accepted whatever Ben wanted. After all, Ben, well was just Ben. She knew never to defy him. It was better that way.
“I think the baby needs some diapers and formula. Maybe you could go and get some.”
She picked up the baby, started humming a song. The baby turned her head towards her new mom and stopped crying for one minute.
“This was a good lie,” Ben thought to himself. “You could even call it a white lie. It’s a lie that protects us. It’s a lie that allows my Annie to have happiness. It’s a lie that allows my family to grow. I am glad that I have faith in Jacob. I am glad that I had seen Jacob. In a few days, I’ll pay him a visit and thank him for my good fortune. Right now, I will get the essentials we need for our family.”
Ben left the house for the warehouse. He took the essentials, diapers, formula, bottles, and rubber nipples. He would put in a request for them later. Right now, it was an emergency. His wife just gave birth unexpectedly.
