I watched her burning body floating away in the ocean. It was the saddest thing I have experienced on this island. Everybody was wearing white. Her body was wrapped in a white sheet and was placed above flowers and vegetations, send off prayers were said, someone lit a fire on top of the flowers, and off she went to her final journey.
Ben just stood there stoically. Alex was holding onto his hand. She was only 2 years old and did not understand that her mommy was taken away from her. I knew then that Ben was never going to be the same.
Poor Annie. She so looked forward to this new baby. She was in her 5th month. She started having cramps. By the time Ben took her to the hospital, she was gone. She just bled to death. No one knows what went wrong. Who knows why things happen the way they do? They happen for a reason, but we never know why till later.
Besides Ben, Alex was Annie’s everything. And, oh, did that baby keep her busy. She was an active child—so much like Ben. If I didn’t know better, I would believe that the child was their natural born. Of course, I was there when we took the baby from that French woman. But I am keeping that secret to my grave.
I wonder what’s going to happened to Ben now? Annie was his everything. He would steal and lie for her. Oh, my, that reminds me of the day we took Alex away from the Frenchwoman. I was wondering how Ben was going to introduce her to our people. He told Danny and me to just go with the flow.
And oh, what a rascal that Ben was! He came up with the greatest story ever. He pretended that Annie was pregnant and they didn’t know. What amazed me is that everyone bought his lie. Everybody. Nobody questioned anything. Not ever her parents. Those bastards.
Annie was so happy about the baby. She went over to her parents’ barrack to show her off. Her father kicked her out. He told her that he wanted nothing to do with workmen and their family. Annie was in tears. Luckily, I was there and was able to walk her home. Hold her hand. Comfort her. I secretly love her husband, but I wasn’t going to tell her that. My heart broke for her. My heart broke for Ben. Annie made me promise to never tell Ben what happened. She didn’t want to hurt Ben’s feeling. She said that he had enough family pain to bear. He didn’t need her family to burden him. That Annie, she was a great gal. I sure will miss her.
When Annie was placed on her final journey, everybody left the beach. Not Ben. He just stood there staring. Staring at the fire. Staring and not blinking.
Alex was getting bored and started crying that she wanted to go home. Ben didn’t hear a word that she was saying. “Daddy, daddy, I want to go home. I want to go home to mommy.” He was just standing there.
I went over to him. I took Annie’s hands from his and pulled her up to my shoulders. She started giggling. “I wove you, unca Tom.” I looked at his face. He had no expression. Only Jacob knew where his thoughts were. “Ben, Ben. It’s Tom, Ben. Look at me. She’s gone, and I bleed for you. But you have a daughter. You have to pay attention to your daughter. Let’s go Ben. Let’s go home. Let’s start a new life.”
“You take Alex home. I have to watch Annie till she leaves.”
“She’s gone, Ben. There’s nothing to see. The fire is almost gone. She is at peace now.”
It was probably the wrong thing to say. Ben looked at me angrily. His beautiful blue eyes became a shade of gray. His looks were ready to kill me. Angrily he said, “How could she be taken from me? Why was she taken from me? She was the only one who cared. Why did Jacob do this? I obeyed him. I did everything he told me to do. Why, Tom? Why?”
“I don’t know. All I know is that your daughter needs you. Remember the little boy who needed his father, Ben. Just remember him. A child needs a parent, Ben. And like it or not, you are Alex’s only parent now.”
Tears were welling up his eyes. I looked down. I didn’t want him to know that I saw how vulnerable he was. “Thank you, Tom. Yes, Alex needs me. I’m the only one she has now.” He grabbed Alex from my shoulders, put her on his arms. “Thank you, Tom. Thank you for being my friend.”
He and his daughter walked home. Why do bad things happen to good people?
To be continued…..
