Ben continued to live with his father and daughter. He made sure that he would not be the father that his father was. He made sure to be there for his daughter as much as he could.
He was a total emotional mess when Annie died. He more than likely would have neglected his daughter, but Tom’s wise words kept him in line. For Ben remembered that little boy who so needed the love of his father, but did not get it.
Unable to understand why Jacob allowed Annie to die, he confronted the old man. Jacob told him that he had no power to stop it. It was DHARMA’s fault. The inhabitants were forever doomed to not be able to populate the island. There was something in the island that the DHARMA scientists messed with. It would take a miracle to return the island to normal. It would take a real dedicated scientist to find the cure. Unfortunately, it was best for women of the island not to conceive on the island, as they would surely meet their death.
The answer he received from Jacob troubled Ben. What will happen to Alex when she grows up? How long could he keep her away from the other sex? Right now, she was a child, but what would happen later on?
Having learned the island’s terrible news, he was sorry that he did not pursue his studies. Perhaps he could come up with the answer to this illness that befell women in their pregnancy. Ben began reading voraciously on anything and everything that he could find. He wanted to be knowledgeable. And this appetite for knowledge would one day benefit him to no end.
Ben didn’t keep secrets from Alex. She was told that her mother died when she was young. That is all that Alex knew about Annie Linus. There were no pictures present, as Ben could not bear to see her. His heart would break whenever he would look at her. But as Alex was growing, Ben took pictures and decorated his walls with them. He was proud of his Alex, very proud. She was the only person left on Earth who loved him back, at least for now.
As usual, time went on. Ben learned to deal with his pain. His life with Alex was full of joy. She was now 5 years old. Soon old enough to start school. One day, Ben learned during his rounds as a workman that the DHARMA folks planned to annihilate the natives. IT WAS NOW TIME. Ben quickly informed Richard, who alerted the rest of the natives. Weeks before the actual purge was to be done, the Hostiles began to prepare to their own purge.
Mikhail Bakunin, who was recruited to serve DHARMA was on their side. He was to jam all communications to prevent the DHARMA folks from calling for help. The underwater station had to be infiltrated and it also would have to be jammed. Greta and Bonnie volunteered to kill the sole person manning that station and to keep any communications from entering or from leaving the island. Later, it was explained that Greta and Bonnie were stationed in Canada. No one was to know that there no longer were communication capabilities between the world and the island.
Ben continued his delivery of chemical goods to the Hostile’s camp. It was only a matter of time. Alex was shipped to live with one of the Hostile’s family. She went to live with Karl’s family. Karl was a young boy who was adopted by the Others. His own mother and father left him on the island to fend for himself. They were disillusioned with DHARMA, and since the child was a result of an extracurricular activity that his biological mother partook in, it was felt that in order to save their marriage, it would be better if they were to leave the child behind.
Within two weeks, Ben and his friends had enough arsenal to purge everyone from the DHARMA Initiative. Colleen, Danny, Tom, Mikhail, and a handful of others who proved to be loyal to the cause were spared.
Ben made sure that he was present when his father died. It was to be the best birthday present ever. December 21, 1993, exactly 30 years after his own birth, having been blamed all his life for his mother’s death, Ben made sure to be there for his father’s death. The only problem he had was how to con his father to get into a closed area. But Roger Linus provided that possibility for Ben all by himself.
Ben, as he did every morning, was getting dressed to go with his father for the daily morning rounds to deliver beer to the various DHARMA stations. He was thinking about inviting his father to drink some beer with him in the van, while he zipped up his workman jumpsuit. And as he did everyday, ever since Annie died, he placed the doll Annie gave him for his 11th birthday in his bag to take with him.
He stopped dressing looked in the mirror and remembered that day, 19 years ago. They were sitting on the swing set; she gave him her present for his birthday. He never received birthday presents before. He unwrapped the present to find two carved wooden dolls, one boy and one girl. “It's us,” said Annie. “That's you and that's me. Now we never have to be away from each other. Happy birthday, Ben.”
He smiled, thinking back about his lovely Annie. Now that he didn’t have her in the flesh, he carried that doll with him every day. He made sure that he was never away from her. When she went on her final journey, he made sure that she had the other doll in her hand. She was never to be away from him.
Ben woke up from his trance, looked as his watch, and he went outside to start carrying the beer pallets to the DHARMA van. His father was already putting some of the pallets into the van.
“Morning, Ben. OK, wait. Put it right, right down there. What's your problem now? Sure you're usually Chatty Cathy in the morning.”
“It's my birthday. I dunno why I keep fooling myself into thinking that one of these years you're actually gonna remember.”
“Well I'll tell you what. All we gotta do this morning is run this stuff out to the Pearl station. Why don't we go up to the mesa, drink some beers. Have some, I dunno, father and son time.”
Ben was ecstatic. The old man helped him out. “I'd like that.”
When their run was over, they stopped at the mesa. Roger exclaimed, “Well, you sure can't say it ain't beautiful.”
“Do you really blame me?”
“What?”
“Do you really think it’s my fault that she died?”
“What do I know?”
Ben, knowing that the time was coming closer, looked at his watch. Roger, noticed it and said, “Why do you keep looking at your watch? You got a date? Listen. If it makes you feel any better, I will do my best to remember your birthday next year.” But it was too late. “I don't think that's going to happen, Dad.”
“What do you mean?” Roger asked.
Ben looked at his dad and said, “You know I've missed her too. Maybe as much as you have. But the difference is, for as long as I can remember, I've had to put up with you. And doing that required a tremendous amount of patience.” He pulled out his gas mask, and said “Goodbye, Dad.” And then he released the gas canister.
His father was astonished. Was Ben going to kill him? “Ben?” It was too late. Roger started struggling for his breath; blood was spurting from his nose and mouth. Ben just sat there and watched his father die. What would Annie have said if she were alive? Maybe it was best that she was not around. This was a very bad secret to keep from her. How could he keep from her that, not only did he kill and witnessed his own father’s death, but he also was the catalyst for the murder of his in-laws and all the people around them whom Annie considered their friends? He tried to prepare her by telling her that befriending Richard and the rest of the Hostiles would spare them their lives. But how could he keep the reality of the genocide that he planned and participated in from his wife? No, maybe her death was the best thing that happened to them. Ben was making sure that he was not on the side of those that were murdered. But to do that, he had to be on the side that did the killing. And that would probably kill his sweet Annie.
To be continued…..
