When the purge ended and all the bodies, but Roger’s (at Ben’s request) were thrown in the ditch to rot. Subsequently, Ben became the Hostile’s leader. It was the natural progression. Ben was the only one who saw, heard, and spoke to Jacob. He was special. He was the one.
As it was, one of the biggest problems that Ben was facing as the island’s leader was his people’s inability to procreate. The women would either not conceive, and the few who did conceive would, like Annie, start hemorrhaging as they would leave their first trimester and enter the second. And as Alex was growing, it was imperative for him to find a solution to the procreation problem. The same phenomenon that kept Richard and many of the other Hostiles alive for over 100 years, was also destroying the women’s capabilities to either conceiving, or worse yet, bringing a child to term. Those who were able to conceive would die just before, or shortly after, entering their second trimester.
As Alex was growing up, like her father a few years earlier, had only one friend. His name was Karl. They spent numerous hours with each other. Countless nighttime hours were spent staring at the sky and naming the various constellations they saw up on the sky. With DHARMA gone, so were formal schooling. Ben spent some time with Alex, encouraging her to read, to get educated. But the little girl wanted only to play with her best friend. Ben never thought much about their friendship, but when Alex turned 12, he realized that just as he and Annie were innocent friends as children, when puberty set in, they started viewing each other in a different manner. Ben knew that when the hormones set in, Alex’s life might be in danger.
At first, Richard, who had everything tied to the island and would not defect, together with Ethan Rom, who like Richard was over 100 years old, were elected to go off island and recruit new blood for the island. If the mother’s couldn’t populate the island, the island would be populated with outsiders. One day, Richard stumbled upon a doctor who during her research was able to impregnate male mice. Perhaps, he told Ben upon returning to the island, this woman might have the answer to their fecundity problem.
“Find out anything and everything that you can about this woman, Richard. Find her vulnerabilities. Anything. We will need this information to lure her to our island and to keep her here for as long as she needs to stay and fix the problems that our women are facing.”
“Yes,” Ben thought to himself. “This woman might be the answer to my prayer. Maybe Alex will not meet Annie’s fate.”
Juliet Burke was lured to the island. Her abusive ex-husband was run over by a bus, compliments of Ben. All Juliet did was tell Richard that she would not be able to do anything without her ex-husband’s approval, and he would not give her the freedom she needed. The only way she would get that freedom would be if he were run over by a bus. Puff, just like that, he was run over by a bus in front of her.
So after much negotiations, and after her sister was impregnated, Juliet came on board to live on the island. Unbeknownst to her, her sister was implanted with a device that would feign and illness should the opportunity come up. That way, Juliet would be told that Jacob could fix her sister provided Juliet would remain on the island. Little did Juliet ever know that she herself would one day implant such device on Claire. But that’s another story for another time.
Now it was up to Juliet to fix the problems facing the women on the island. If she would be successful, Alex could have her best friend forever. If she were not to be successful, Alex would need to be separated from Alex. Only time would tell.
To be continued…..
