This is my first fanfic, so please, go easy on me: it's just a brief stupid thing I wrote after seeing season 4 trailer.
(oh, and I have some problems with written English: please let me know if you see some mistake-surely you will-so I can correct them).
It is set after Jack's call, before "Not Penny's" boat comes: a little moment of rest for Ben before the storm begins.
Watch your step there
Juliet was the first one to get up that morning; getting out of her tent, the very first thing she saw was the tree where Jack tied Ben to. But there were no Ben tied to that tree.
He was gone.
Furious, scared, her heart thumbing, Juliet run as the wind down the beach, to the rocks, wondering where the hell he could have hid himself.
But she had not to look for him longly: he was standing there, on a rock, his arms along his hips.
His shirt was slapped by a ruthless wind against his body, the cloth, trembling around his neck and arms, pulled taut around his chest. White wawes broke on the rocks in front of him, spraying him with salty drops. He standed upright, perfectly visible, his lonely figure clean against the white sky, his eyes fixed on the horizon.
Juliet stopped her run and stared him, breathless. And, just for a moment, she saw him as she had never saw him before: injured, vulnerable, harmless.
Juliet approached him, breathing heavily. She saw tiny drops of salty water shone on his hair and eyebrows. She started to feel pain for him.
“Ben.”
He didn't turn his head.
“I thought you had run away.”
“I'm a gentlemen, Juliet. I would never go away without saying 'goodbye'. ”
Ben folded his head, his eyebrow arched, and gave her a side-glance. The intense morning light flooded his face, and his harsh, pale features - sharp nose, hard lips, spiky hair – appeared shocking to see: his eyes unnaturally clear and bright, his skin as white as chalk between the scars.
A wawe hit the rock and a salty mist reached Juliet's face: a gust of wind, carrying the smell of saltiness, ruffled her hair and shook Ben's. A gull squeaked, and Juliet found herself remembering the first time she met him: there were the same salty smell in the air, the same intense light.
[Sunlight, the sound of birds chirping. Her climbing up the sub's deck, seeing the island for the first time. Ben walking up the pier to the submarine, dazzling light on his face.]
Present and past merged into her mind, and she saw the old Ben, the one she once known and admired, overlapping the present one.
Ben turned his head again towards the sea.
[Hello, Dr. Burke. My name is Benjamin Linus.]
She was abruptly taken back to the present moment by Ben's voice.
“And, obviously, Juliet, there's nowhere to run for me any more." There was a pale note of irony in his voice. "Nor for you.”
“What are you talking about?”
“When your new boyfriend made that call, he condemned us all.” Ben pressed together his lips, his eyebrows arched.
“What new boyfriend?”
“Jack.” He looked at her with a little bit of the old wit. “Cute, athlethic, with a white coat... The kind of guy you take home to meet your mother.”
“Surely I wouldn't have introduced you to my mother!”
Juliet looked at him: he seemed vaguely amused. She got angry again.
“If you didn't want to escape, why the hell had you untied yourself?”
“Well, you know, doctors usually advise against sleeping tied to a tree. It seems to cause back pain.”
“Ben!"
“I went for a last walk on my island.” He suddenly turned his head and looked her in the eyes.
“The place I called 'home' for such a long time.” He rapidly took a breath.
Juliet bit her lip. Anger and pity fight into her mind.
[“I'm really looking forward to working with you.”]
“And now, what are you going to do, Ben?”, she finally asked.
He seemed slightly surprised.
“I'm gonna protect my island, Juliet. I'm gonna protect it by any means necessary.”
“What...?”Juliet stared at him, confused. “What the hell are you talking about?”, she asked, for the second time.
Ben returned her look: his eyes, pale blue when he was staring at the sea, were pure gold now- cat eyes, vampire eyes, the strangest eyes she'd never seen.
“Do you really think I'm going to give you an answer, Juliet?”
Unexpectedly, he gave her a smile.
“C'mon.”, he said, bending his head towards the beach. “Let's go back to the camp.”
He turned round and jumped off the rock, then held out his hand to help her, with the same, precise gesture he made three years before, on that deck bathed in light.
“Watch your step there.”
