Emma had seen this woman before. She had watched her kill Mikhail after Charlie's death. She nearly fell to the ground as a wave of memories flashed before her eyes in the moments before the woman spoke.
Emma's research team had been on the island for only a few days when their boat was set on fire. They sensed that it had been done on purpose, but by who they never found out. Suddenly stranded, the crew of archaeologists, historians, geographers and scientists from England's most respected universities resolved to continue their search for the legendary Black Rock. One disaster after another befell them, until they were scattered all over the island.
Emma found herself alone on the beach when Desmond's sailboat ran aground. He was poorly, and she helped him off the boat and nursed him by her campfire. It was his second attempt to leave the island, but the ocean had turned on him and sent him back. He was desperate to leave, and his failure left him dispirited. He and Emma forged a deep friendship in those days on the beach. At some point, Emma couldn't remember exactly when, they moved beyond friendship. She loved Desmond deeply, and he loved her as much as he could love anyone who wasn't Penny. Emma knew she would always be second in his heart, but it didn't matter. She was the one that was with him now.
He had wanted Emma to leave the island with him, but she refused. She couldn't bear to see him reunite with Penny - he would be lost to her forever, whether she stayed or went with him. It was better to stay on the island. She watched his sailboat disappear over the horizon, and her heart mourned him.
But Desmond's boat again returned to the island, this time to the camp of plane survivors. Emma watched from a distance, unable to bring herself to join the survivors. She longed to be with Desmond, to let him know that she was there, but something held her back. She watched strange events unfold between the survivors and those known as "the Others." Always, she watched, afraid to join them, afraid of trusting the wrong person. Mostly, she was afraid that Desmond had forgotten her.
She and Desmond would be reunited when the time was right - she knew this in her heart. In the meantime she lived alone - always watching, always waiting. But she had lost track of him - the island had kept him from her watchful eyes these past two months. Emma was certain that Ben knew what had happened to Desmond. And this woman was connected to Ben somehow, she must know something...

Zoe was startled at first but Emma's brupt appearence, but had learned to get a grip quickly from learning to live alone and survive.
"Please, I'm not hear to cause trouble, I've stayed away from the village like everyone wanted, but it has been a year since I've left my children now, and they are only 6 months old. I wasn't even there to see them being born. I don't even know what they look like." Zoe pleaded calmly, misunderstanding that Emma had caught her out as maybe a type of guard over the village. "I just come here to watch - just to get a glimpse. Please - don't tell Ben."
Zoe watched Emma with sorrow in her eyes, it felt strange, being on her own for so long, and yet, here she was, communitcating with someone she thought to be happily living in the village, living a life, having freedom and privilidges that Zoe had taken for granted all those months ago.

Emma was so struck by the sadness in the woman's eyes that her defenses immediately crumbled. She lowered her gun.
"You were the one that killed Mikhail, weren't you? And now Ben is punishing you by keeping you from your children? I'm sorry, I...I'm not one of them. I've been watching them, like you...."
Emma was at a loss for words. She, too, had gone so long on this island without any human contact that her thoughts were difficult to express. But this woman feared Ben, needed to understand Ben, in the same way she did. She had found a potential ally - but could she be trusted? There was one question only that she could manage to find the words for.
"Do you know anything about Desmond Hume?"

Zoe looked up at her.
"Yes. I was with him the day Charlie was murdered." Zoe replied. "And yes, I did Mikhail, and it was for that exact reason that I did, and I have no regrets. When I came back to the village after Charlie's murder, I became closer friends with Desmond, although god knows how long it's been since I've seen him, I even lost touch with him for a while shortly before I was banished. How do you know him?"

Josh and Steph rushed out of their home as they heard the shouting. Both stood in shock as Mel revealed she had no idea who her babies father was. "Poor SOphie" Steph mumbled. "she doesn't need anymore problems". She felt Josh squeeze her hand before watching him walk back into their mustard coloured abode that they had shared for the past eighteen months.
Three months ago: She watched helplessly as he collapsed in front of her, desperately trying to grab onto the table as he fell. Steph tried deserately to move him, but Josh was barely conscious. Richard and Ben helped him into bed. After a couple if days the blood tests and for that matter any other test they could think of were negative. There was no sign of a tumour anywhere or any underlying disease. Even if there were, that I'm itself would be a phenomena for Josh was like Richard, he just didn't seem to age, well at least not at the same pace as most on the island.
In the following weeks, his condition only seemed to deteriorate, organ functions were going haywire and yet nothing seemed to ever indicate why
Steph decided to leave him alone for awhile. She walked over to SOphie who was now tearful as the events unfolded before her

Emma's face paled dramatically. She had to pause to collect her thoughts before she continued in a soft voice.
"I met Desmond on the beach, about a year ago, maybe more. He was trying to leave the island on his sailboat, but the ocean kept bringing him back. I know he loves someone else, but I fell for him, and he loved me as much as he could love anybody who isn't Penny. He has disappeared from the village, and the island has kept him hidden from me for two months. But Ben knows where he is. I'm certain of it."
Emma took a deep breath before making a tentative offer of friendship to Zoe. "Do you think we could both get back what we want most from Ben? Do you think we can work together to reclaim our lives? I know he's powerful, but we're survivors, we have our own power. We have to try!"

"How can you not know who Bella's father is?" Ben asked in a dangerous voice.
"Ben, you know when it happened. We got back together but then Dharma attacked the village and Ethan showed up. It all happened so closely that your guess is as good as mine."'
"Mel." Ethan began, "Please tell me that you didn't have another child with that man."
Mel turned to Ethan, "In case you've forgotten Ethan, you are the reason I became pregnant with William in the first place! Don't you dare condemm me."
"Now, I'm done having this conversation in front of everyone." Mel said as she walked back to Juliet and took Bell from her arms.
"Thank you." she whispered to her and Juliet gave her a small smile of encouragement.
"Wait." Ben said. "Please."
Mel stopped but didn't turn around.
"Juliet." Ben started, "We're going to need your expertise. I'm certain Mel wants to know who the father of her child is, right now."

Steph came over to Sophie who was tearful holding Molly.
"Hey come on lets get you inside." said Steph as she put an arm around Sophie taking her back to her home.
*KNOCK KNOCK* Sophie opened her front door finding ben at the porch steps.
"I'm sorry for just rushing off like that." he sighed. Sophie smiled back and let him in the home.
"I was just folding some clothes. Just give me a sec." she said heading off to another room. Ben followed behind her and was amazed that the room they had gone in had been decorated and was ready for when the baby came.
"Wow!" Ben said looking around.
"John helped me. He's been great the last few months."
"You know i would of helped too, if you asked."
"Your too busy Ben." she said folding her last baby clothing and placing it in the draw. "I found out something today while i was at my scan."
"Oh?" ben asked.
"The dates were wrong. Richard is not the father........." she sighed with relief. "You are." Ben stood there not knowing what to say. "I know things are different now. But i still want you invovled."
"Does Richard know?" Ben asked.
"Yes i told him as soon as i found out. I think he's relieved too. Me and him wouldn't of worked. I didn't love him. Not like i did with you."
"Did?" he asked making Sophie blush. A little smile formed in the corner ben's mouth.
"Fancy a cup of tea?" she asked.
"Yes. I would love one." he smiled.

"Are you ready?" Juliet asked Mel.
They had gone straight the Juliet's lab.
Mel shook her head, "Either way I lose."
"Listen Mel, whatever happens Jack and I are here for you."
"Thanks Jules, the two of you have been such good friends to me since I came back."
"Hey, we're fighters. We have to stick together." Juliet smiled as she looked at the machine in front of her.
"Can you tell who it is that quickly?" Mel asked.
"Yes." Juliet nodded, "I know who Bella's father is."

Steph sat Sophie down on the sofa. Taking Molly form her, she placed her in her crib in the corner of the room. Steph sat down next to her friend and placed her arm around her. Sophie began sobbing into Steph's shoulder.
"I'm sorry" Sophie cried. "You have enough to worry about". Steph looked Sophie in the eyes "He's going to be fine, so will you and Molly" she said, attempting to reassure herself as much as Sophie. They hugged.
"What do I do?" asked Sophie "I could ask you the same question" Steph replied. The girls put on a brief smile for each other, neither particularly convincing. "Let's just see what happens" Steph continued. "For all we know, Bell may be Ethans"

Sophie and ben had been chatting for hours. Talking about the baby as well as other things. Ben looked at his watch realising how late it was.
"Oh i should go.." he mumbled getting up taking his mug to the sink. Sophie got up to say goodbye to him. "I'll come and see you some time soon. I want to be around for both of you." before giving her kiss on the cheek goodbye. Sophie moved so there lips met each other. Ben pulled away.
"I'm sorry i shouldn't off. I just miss you." she sighed turning away. Ben turned her around and kiss her again.
Sophie placed molly in her cot and wiped her tears. "I should of known. When we got back together he kept sneaking off now and then." she turned to look at steph. "I dunno what to do Steph."

"I 'm afraid I don't either" Steph sighed. "Ben is such an idiot at times"
The girls hugged again. "You got any chocolate?" Steoh asked smirking. "Fridge" Sophie replied. Steph took out the 1kg bar of Cadbury's (change it to Galaxy if you want Sophie) and motioned for Sophie to sit down again. On the way into the lounge, Steph also picked up one of Ben;s vintage Rioja's. Sophie looked at Steph. "What?" Steph replied giggling. "He's in the dog house, he doesn't deserve fine wine". Sophie forced a laugh and together they spent the evening trying to keep their minds of their problems

"Nothing would make me happier then getting my children back, but Ben made it clear to me that if he ever caught sight of me again, he'd kill me." Zoe replied sadly. "I care too much for my children for me to give up hope of ever seeing them, and if that mean for now staying away, until they manage to venture out here by themselves, then that is what I will do."
Although her spoken thoughts of the matter were true, she felt a little unseasy. She had found it hard to trust people so easily now, especially since her arrival on the island and all her happenings between her father, Ethan. It was normally in her nature to help, but she had been so strict with herself to forget everything she thought would be the right thing to concentrating on the main objectives of survival. She had learnt now that live together, die alone didn't work. It was every man - or woman - for themself.

Mel followed Juliet outside.
"You won't tell anyone will you?" she asked.
"Of course I won't." Juliet answered. "It's for you to tell."
Mel smiled, "Thanks Jules."
Mel had almost made it to her front door when she heard Ben.
"I take it you've found out the truth." he said as he walked up to her.
"I have." she told him.
"Well?" he smirked, confident that Bella was his.
Mel looked up at him. This wasn't the kind Ben who had come to visit her at the hatch. This was someone else. He'd changed towards her the instant he found out she'd known Ethan was alive.
"Well what?" she said putting her hand on her hips. "You want me to be honest, what about you? It's obvious Sophie never even had an idea that it was possible Bella was yours. Didn't you tell her when you were coming to see me?"
"Why would I do that?"
"Because we weren't doing anything wrong! Or have you forgotten that we slept together long before I left."
"It would have caused her stress, she didn't need that."
"How do you think she feels now? To know that you and I might have another child together?"
"She will cope, she always does."
Mel shook her head, "I'm not sure if you even deserve her or Molly."
"What you think about me and Sophie is of little consequence."
"Mel?" they both heard Ethan call as he came up to them.
Mel rolled her eyes as the village began to gather again.
"I am not talking about this in front of everyone!" she stated.
"Yes you are." both men said at the same time.
"It's time." Ben told her and she knew there was no getting out of it.

Emma could sense Zoe's hesitation. She understood completely - she had her own trust issues as a result of her island adventures. She spoke softly. "I understand your fear, Zoe. I have to reach Ben somehow, to find my own answers, and when I do I will do what I can for your children. But I will keep your secret."
During this exchange, the two women were oblivious to the commotion occurring in the village until Ben's shouting caught Emma's attention. She raised her binoculars to her eyes. A crowd had gathered around Ben and the woman Emma had thought was no longer living in the village. She couldn't make out what the voices were saying, but Ben's anger seemed to be directed at the woman, Mel. Emma thought she caught a glimpse of Ethan, as well. She had thought he was dead. Another village secret revealed...
Emma returned her attention to Zoe. "I have to go, Zoe. I have to find out what Ben knows about Desmond. I can be your ally, if you need me. It's your choice."
Emma smiled at Zoe and vanished into the jungle to return to her makeshift camp. It was time for action. It was time to uncover Ben's secrets. Emma hoped that the current drama would somehow help her to reach the village undetected.
