Zoe had been walking around in the jungle alone for hours now, but glad that no-one had come after her. She sat down on a tree log, looking closely at Charlie, his deep ocean blue eyes studying her. She smiled, and stroked his face confortingly, assuring him he was safe.
"Thank you for naming him after me." Came a familiar voice from no-where. Zoe looked to her right. There he was, sitting next to her on the tree log, like he really was alive, an everyday accurance.
"Charlie!" Zoe gasped in suprise, more over his abrupt appearance then actually just seeing him. She had long since been used to seeing him, despite him being dead.
"I know, it's been a while." Charlie smiled at her sadly. "But after Abbie..." Zoe looked down at the floor and began to cry.
"I'm a terrible mother! I just abbandoned her! She must have felt so unloved, with me not being there, yet, I had Charlie..." She wailed. Charlie put a comforting arm around her shoulders.
"Hey, it's okay, it's not your fault. I'm not here to blame. I had to see you. Well, I wanted to see you before, but then it complicated..." Charlie explained soothingly. Zoe looked up at him.
"How? I missed you so. much." She asked.
"I think you know." Charlie said to her kindly. "Not that I disapprove or anything. I'm glad you found someone to take care of you."
"Sawyer?" Zoe asked rehtorically to confirm. Charlie nodded.
"I thought it was best to keep away for a while. It would only complicate things more for you both, and I didn't want to get in the way of you being happy." Charlie explained. "And then the purge happened, and I knew I needed to do what I could to help...."
"You knew?" Zoe asked. Charlie nodded.
"I'm working on getting you help." He told her.
"How?"
"I've been asking a good friend of ours. I told him you needed him." Charlie explained. "He's found taking the news from me a bit hard though. You know, with me being dead and all." Zoe chuckled weakly.
"And who's 'he'?" She asked.
"Hurley." Charlie replied. "But he's not the only one, I've been asking others..." Zoe looked at him, and smiled greatfully.
"Charlie, I-" She started.
"I've got to go." Charlie said suddenly.
"What, why?!" Zoe relied a little hurt.
"I'll come back for you soon, I promise." Charlie replied, and he vanished. Zoe stood up panically, and looked round her surroundings. He had gone again. Baby Charlie started to cry again, and as soon as he did, a loud, thunderous noise sounded from no-where. Zoe's eyes widened in fear. She knew that sound, and that it was dangerous. She held Charlie closer to her, her eyes darting around everywhere to locate where it came from so she knew which direction to run.
It started to rain, and she knew she had no choice, she ran, heading back for the village, even though she was probably going to right into it. Behind her, she heard almighty bangs, she yelled out in fear, and looked behind her. It was there. It was chasing her, and gaining on her rapidly. She knew she couldn't out run it, but she refused to give up without a fight.
The black smoke engulfed her, and that was all she could see. Black. She held tighter to Charlie.
"DON'T HURT HIM!" She begged. "PLEASE, I'M BEGGING YOU!" She closed her eyes tightly, she heard mechanical movement, like clogs turning, reminding her of the times when she had gone to theme parks with her mother. There was another deep, alarm type sound, and everything felt different. Bright. Zoe opened her eyes quickly, and suddenly everything was white.
She heard more noises all around her, but couldn't pin point what these sounds were, and where they came from. All she could see was white all around her, and then she heard them. She heard whispers. Charlie was still crying, she bounced him lightly, trying to calm him, hushing him calmly and soothingly.
Then it happened, and she gasped with awe.

Emma returned home to Jack. She was pleased that it had been so easy to make Locke believe she had forgiven him. Jack pulled her close to him and kissed her hard when he saw her.
"Don't ever do that again." he murmured.
Emma laughed carelessly. "Nothing happened to me. I know you were watching the entire time. We were just talking."
"I don't trust Ben or Locke with you. I want you to stay away from them."
Emma sighed. Jack's overprotective nature was resurfacing, and it would be difficult to do anything to Locke under his careful watch.
"Jack, I'm not going to do anything. I want a quiet life with you and our baby, and nothing more. I'm pretty sure Ben will leave us out of anything he has planned against your father, and I just had to call a truce with Locke. It was nothing more than that, I promise you."
**********
Emma woke in the middle of the night and disentangled herself from Jack's sleeping embrace. Her baby craved ice cream, and she had to obey him - even if it was 3:00 in the morning.
As she sat at the kitchen table with her bowl of Dharma ice cream, she heard voices whispering.
"Jack?" she whispered. "Is that you?"
The whispering seemed to surround the house from the outside. Emma opened the front door and listened. The voices were all around her, but she couldn't make out the words. She took a few tentative steps away from the house in her bare feet, and then...somebody knocked her out with a blow to the head. Blackness descended on her. She fell and was caught by strong masculine arms.
"Now why would I believe you'd forgiven me, Emma? Maybe you should have sided with Christian when you had the chance." John Locke asked with a good-natured chuckle as he carried her deep into the jungle.

Mel moved swiftly through the jungle. Though it was dark she navigated the way back to the village easily. She couldn't stop thinking of the task Jacob had given her and his encouraging words before she had left him.
It was refreshing to talk to another who was on her side, who didn't condemm her. She trusted Jacob and she knew he would come through when they really needed him.
She also knew it was going to be very difficult to follow his wishes. When she did what he wanted her to it wouldn't make her situation any better, it would make it much worse.
Mel tried to clear her mind as she came to the village. All of the lights in the houses were out, the light of the moon illuminated the courtyard. As Mel moved closer she saw that someone was standing right in the middle of the courtyard looking up at the sky. She walked up to them.
"Hello Mel." Ben said without looking at her.
"Ben. What are you doing?" she asked.
"I'm watching the sky. Enjoying this last peaceful moment while I can." he answered honestly.
Mel stood next to him and looked up into the sky as well. They stood for a long while in silence. Mel furrowed her eyebrows.
"Something bothering you?" Ben smirked.
"It doesn't make any sense. How can I feel so comfortable around you still?"
"We did have an intense relationship that lasted over a year Mel. That doesn't go away quickly."
"I shouldn't even be talking to you."
"Yet here you are, stargazing at my side." he smiled sadly.
Mel looked down.
"Can I tell you something?" Ben asked.
"Yes." Mel nodded.
"I have no desire to cause you any harm Mel."
"What?"
"Why would I want to hurt you? I've always wanted the best for you. I may not have shown it in the right ways in the past but I've done my best."
"Ben." Mel started.
"I love you Mel, not in the romantic sense and not in the way I love Sophie, I just want you to be happy."
Surprised at his revelation Mel took a step back, "I don't think that is possible Ben. This place won't allow me to be happy when you are near."
Ben looked away, "I don't want to see you die and I am afraid that is what is going to happen if this war escalates."
"Then stop it!" Mel cried. "Do you think I want this war? The only thing I want to do is live in peace with my children and my husband."
Ben shook his head.
"Don't you dare tell me you can't stop it. You know you can."
"Even if they all listened to me, Sophie wouldn't take it."
"She is always going to be the one to screw up my life isn't she? Well, the way she is going, maybe not for long."
"What does that mean Mel?" Ben asked.
"Does it matter Ben? According to your outlook I'm going to be dead soon anyway. I think I've had enough of the stars." Mel said as she turned and started for her house.
"Mel!" Ben called with a hint of desperation in his voice.
Mel whipped around and rushed up to him, "You make me so angry. But I don't want to kill you either. We don't have a choice."
In a moment of weakness Ben raised his hand and ran it through Mel's hair. She closed her eyes and let out a shakey breath.
Mel opened her eyes and looked into Ben's, "Goodbye Ben." she whispered and walked quickly to her house back to her loving husband. She left Ben in the middle of the dark courtyard staring after her.

Emma woke up on a cot in the secret station that John Locke had revealed to Lauren so many months before. Her hands and feet were tied together, but he had been thoughtful enough to place warm blankets over her, and a pillow under her head.
She sat up slowly, her head throbbing. John sat in a chair a few feet away, peeling fruit with his hunting knife.
"Good morning, Emma." he said cheerfully.
"What are you doing, John? Why am I here?"
John placed his knife on the table and pulled his chair closer to Emma. "You wanted me to think you were on my side, but I saw the rage and the hatred in your eyes. You couldn't hide that from me. So I had to make a preemptive strike. But don't worry, I won't hurt you or your baby. I just want to keep you out of the way while I take care of my business."
Emma glared fiercely at him. "I hate you for what you did, John. But I gave Ben my allegiance. If you and he are allies, then you have nothing to fear from me."
"Oh, I don't think it works like that," he replied smoothly. "See, Ben and I aren't exactly allies. He's really only out for himself, and we get along when it suits his purposes. It's always a temporary thing."
"How long do you plan on keeping me here? I'm having a baby in two months, I need to be with Jack!" she cried.
"Only as long as it takes to put Christian in his place. I know you would have ended up on his side eventually, and knowing Jack he'll be looking for you instead of supporting his father. This way I can keep both of you out of the way. The fewer allies Christian has on hand, the sooner he'll realize that he has no place on this island."
John smiled warmly and offered a piece of fruit to Emma. "Hungry?"

Sophie watched from the window seeing Ben and Mel under the moonlight and how ben carresed her hair. Sophies blood boil. He was supposed to be her husband. She saw him coming back to the house so she jumped back into bed pretending to asleep. She heard come in. fiddle with his clothing and climbed into bed next to her. He laid close up next to her before kissing her cheek. Sophie smiled and turned to face him. "I love you." he whispered as he stared into her eyes.
"But you still love her....." Sophie sighed rolling over having her back to him. "I just saw you. It breaks my heart, your supposed to be my husband ben." she whispered.
Ben started to rub her back to comfort her. "I don't love her Sophie..... Not any more." he sighed.
"Your just saying that to keep me happy and i bet if she weren't with Chirsitian. I still would of had to share you with her."
"No..." he pulled her over so that she looked at him, stroking her hair out of her face. "Its over! I promise."
"You've promised me before, how can i believe you."
"Because i mean it!"

Mel closed the front door quietly behind her. She found Christian asleep on the couch in the living room. Apparently he had been waiting up for her. Mel smiled and moved down the hallway to the kids room.
William and Bella were sleeping soundly in their beds. Mel happened to glance into the spare room on her way back to the living room and saw that Juliet was asleep in the guest bed. Mel was glad she hadn't gone back to her house. After today it most likely wasn't going to be safe for her, or for any of them, to be alone.
Back in the living room Mel stood over Christian. He'd be more comfortable in their bed but she didn't have the heart to wake him. At the last minute Mel closed all of the curtains in the room. She had the funny feeling that she was being watched. Then she laid down next to Christian on the couch.
He woke up enough to wrap an arm around her and kiss her head.
"I love you." he whispered as he dozed off again.
Mel wondered if Ben was doing the same thing, crawling into bed with his spouse. 'Damn him', she thought. This would be easier for everyone if they could just hate each other like everyone believed.
Mel squeezed her eyes shut, shoving Ben out of her mind. She picked up Christian's hand and kissed his palm, "I love you Christian."

Zoe returned to the village, stunned, still grasped hold of baby Charlie. As she walked across the village, Sawyer burst out his house and ran straight towards her.
"Thank goodness you're okay! I thought - oh, you don't want to know what I thought!" He said to her with tones of relief as he ushered Zoe and baby Charlie back to his. Zoe didn't say anything, but she hugged Sawyer back before putting Charlie to bed. She was exhausted, having had an eventful and hurtful couple of days.
She sat down on the bed, glancing over at Charlie in his cot a couple of times while Sawyer wrapped his arms around her, holding her tightly and cradling her, also sitting in silence, knowing it wasn't the right time to say anything, especially after Abbie.
He would let Zoe speak first, and would wait paiently, until she was ready. But meanwhile, he held onto her tightly, reassuring her that she was safe, comforting her, looking after her, wiping away the tears that were still sliding down her cheeks.
Sawyer woke the next morning, Zoe soft and soundly still asleep, suprised that either of them had managed to sleep, Sawyer did not move, not wanting to disturb her, knowing she needed her rest, he remained beside her, and shut his eyes again.

Jack woke up to an empty bed in the early morning hours. "Emma?" he questioned sleepily. He poked his head into every room in the house, but it was completely silent. The front door had been left wide open, and it swung back and forth in the breeze. Jack began to panic. He ran to the stables; her horse was still there. Thinking Ben might have some answers, since Emma had offered her allegiance to him, Jack stormed towards his house.
Ben answered Jack's knock on the door. "Where is Emma?" he demanded.
"Sshhh..." Ben motioned. "Sophie is still sleeping. It's a little early to be making house calls, don't you think, Jack?"
"Where is she?" he yelled in Ben's face.
"I have no idea." Ben responded calmly. "But if I were a betting man, I'd put my money on John Locke having something to do with it. Something tells me the two of them have some unfinished business."
"Where is Locke?"
Ben shrugged. "That's not my problem, Jack." Then he closed the door in Jack's face.

Mel and Christian both woke the next morning to someone banging loudly on their front door. Mel pushed herself off the couch and stumbled towards the door in a sleepy haze. When she pulled it open she was met with a frantic Jack.
"Jack, what's wrong?" she asked.
"It's Emma, she's gone." he said as he walked inside.
"What do you mean. When?"
Christian was sitting up on the couch now looking at Jack.
"Sometime during the night. When I woke up this morning the front door was open and she was gone. She wouldn't just leave without telling me."
"Who else have you talked to?" Christian asked as he stood.
Jack looked away, "Ben."
"What?" Mel exclaimed, "Why would you go to him?"
"Because yesterday Emma promised Ben that she was on his side and would help him. Then today she is no where to be found."
"What did Ben say?" Christian said.
"He alluded that John Locke probably had her."
"That stupid man. Why didn't I kill him when I had the chance?" Mel said more to herself than anyone else.
"We need to go out in the jungle and look for her now. I need your help." Jack pleaded.
Christian placed his hand on Jack's shoulder, "Listen kiddo, I know you want to make sure Emma is safe but we can't go running into the jungle. If John senses that we are coming or near he could harm her. Now, he's not going to kill her but if you go after him that is exactley what will happen."
"So you want me to just do nothing?" Jack said, unbelieving.
"No, I want you to come back to your house with me. We'll see what we can figure out. We need more information."
Jack looked at Mel, "John won't hurt a pregnant woman Jack. Likely he just wants to keep her out of the way. Trust your dad."
Jack was reluctant but finally nodded. He let Christian lead him to the front door. As he passed Christian kissed Mel quickly, "Watch your back." he whispered.
"You too." she called after him.

Zoe woke up in an empty bed. She frowned, and got up, grabbing her dressing gown. She glanced inside Charlie's cot, he was sleeping soundly. She left the room and into the open plan living kitchen area. Sawyer was standing at the window, staring out into the village, he had a glass tumbler in his hand that was empty.
Acknowledging her presence, Sawyer turned round.
"You're awake." He nodded at her.
"Suprised I even got to sleep." Zoe replied, walking over to him. "How long have you been up?"
"A few hours now. I didn't want to wake you, you looked so peaceful." Sawyer said to her warmly.
"I have to go over to see Jack and Juliet today." Zoe said abruptly.
"What? Why?" He asked.
"So I can get Abbie. So we can bury her." Zoe replied, looking him in the eyes, which softened as she spoke, and he wrapped his arms around her, hugging her tightly, Zoe resting her head on his chest.
"I can go for you if you like." He said quietly.
"No, I want to do it." Zoe replied firmly before looking up at him. "You can come with me though?"
"Of course I will."

"Good Morning." Sophie smirked as she climbed on top of Ben sitting on his lap wrapping her arms around the back of his neck. She planted a kiss on him. Ben smiled back then looked at her.
"Your in a good mood." he stated. Sophie ignored him and just started kissing him passionaltey, nibbling his ear and kissing his neck, trying to unbutton his shirt as she hungrly kissed his body. "Sophie..." he gasped as he rested his head back.....
"Dammit!" Sophie mumbled sitting up she heard Molly starting to stir and wake up. She looked into Ben's eyes then stroked her nose against his, like an eskimo kiss both panting, "bad timing!" she sighed. Climbing of Ben. She headed for the nursery. "Ok i'm coming!" she yelled. Ben smiled to himself as he watch go off. But one thing came to his mind, words that had haunted him most of the night.
"She is always going to be the one to screw up my life isn't she? Well, the way she is going, maybe not for long."

Despite Emma's seething hatred of Locke, she had to admit that he treated her with extraordinary gentleness and comfort, with the exception of keeping her hands tied together around the clock. Somehow, she managed to be civil to her captor, hoping she could eventually persuade him to return her to the village. Once again, all she could think about was returning to Jack, and wonder if he was in the jungle looking for her. She never thought about, or even mentioned, Desmond. It was too painful, and to be around his killer constantly was enough to drive her mad if she allowed herself to think about him even once.
"Locke, can I ask you a question?" Emma asked as they sat at the kitchen table one evening. Locke was sharpening and polishing his hunting knives.
Locke nodded. "Go right ahead."
Emma took a deep breath. "Why is it that you believed Christian when he told you Jacob ordered the purge? Why didn't you question him? If Jacob really chose you to lead the island, wouldn't he have given you the orders directly?"
Locke grimaced and put down his knives. Emma knew she had struck a nerve.
"I just had faith, Emma. Then I realized I made a mistake. I knew Christian had been brought to this island for a reason, but I never imagined he would be chosen as its leader. I know now he's not the right person for it."
"And Ben?"
Locke looked her straight in the eye. "Ben and I have always had an understanding, but he sometime oversteps his bounds. He needs to be put in his place as well."
"What do you have planned for them, Locke? Will there be more deaths?"
Locke gave her an enigmatic smile. "If the island demands it, then yes. I haven't yet determined where your loyalties lie, so the less you know about my plans the better. I do know you'll never give me your allegiance, after what I did to Desmond."
Emma froze. He had broached the subject she had been avoiding since the day Locke had kidnapped her. She suddenly felt dizzy and unfocused. "Desmond..." she moaned, and the flood of tears was unleashed. She thought she was going to be sick.
"I'm sorry, Emma." Locke said softly, clearly remorseful for the role he had played in her pain. He quickly put his knives back in his box and left the room with them, unable to face her. He locked the door behind him.
Emma's rage surged to the forefront of her mind. For what it was worth, she swore to herself to give her loyalty to whoever took care of John Locke permanently - whether it was Ben or Christian. He had to be punished.

"Juliet, I can't just sit here and do nothing." Mel said as she paced the living room.
"What is wrong with waiting for the conflict to come to you? Why do you always have to go and chase it?"
Mel glanced sideways at Juliet, "You know me too well."
Juliet smiled, "Because we are so alike. You know who else you are just like?"
"Don't say it." Mel groaned.
"Ben."
"You said it! Listen, I know that me are Ben are terribly similar but it's not something I want to hear right now. How are we supposed to fight one another if we can guess each others next move?"
"You'll have to act uncharacteristically." Juliet shrugged.
"Yeah well, what I'm about to do, it will crush him."
"What is it?"
"I can't tell you. But it has to happen soon. Jacob said so himself."
"Then you should go." Juliet said, "I'll watch the kids."
"You must be sick of playing babysitter."
"I'll get a piece of the action soon enough." Juliet laughed.
"Thanks Jules." Mel said as she left the house.
***************************************************
"Christian I have to leave again." Mel told her husband after she found him at Jack's house.
"You just got back."
"I have to find John Locke and someone else."
"Did Jacob give you this task?" Christian asked as he closed the door behind him so Jack couldn't hear them.
"Yes and I'm afriad if we don't find Locke soon he's going to create a whole new set of problems. He's already kidnapped Emma, what's he going to do next?"
"You think he's working for Ben?"
Mel sighed, "I don't know. The John Locke I have seen so far has always worked for the island, doing what the island demands. Or at least what he thinks the island demands. In reality, I think he is delusional."
"How so?"
"Jacob claims that he hasn't asked John to do anything beyond the purge. He hasn't even had contact with him in months. Whatever John is doing, he is coming up with himself."
"You're right, he needs to be found. I'm coming with you."
Mel looked up at him, "Are you sure? You're head."
"Is fine." Christian said firmly. "I'm tired of having my wife fight my battles. From now on we fight side by side."
Mel smiled, "I have to admit, I like the sound of that."
"Good." he said as he bent to kiss her.
Ten minutes later they set off. Christian had sent Jack to Juliet's. It seemed that jack and his father had a long talk and Jack was most definitley on Christian and Mel's side. So he agreed to stay with Juliet and keep an eye on William and Bella.
Right before they entered the jungle Mel got the sensation that she was being watched. She turned and looked behind her. She saw Ben, watching her closely from his front porch. His eyes didn't look at Christian at all, they stayed glued to her. Mel didn't acknowledge him, she turned back and took Christian's hand and kept walking.

"Ben can you watch Molly. I want to go for a walk." she said. Placing Molly into his lap as he sat on the porch after watching Mel and Christian head off into the jungle.
"Your not going after them!" he said to her.
"I'm not Ben. I'm going to see John." she walked down the porch steps looking at him. Ben rasied eyebrow as if to question her.
"Relax hunny" she giggled blewing a kiss to him before heading off in the opposite way to Mel and Chrisitan.
.........................................................
"John open up! It Sophie." she said banging on the door. John opened it and looked around the jungle suspicously. Opening the door wider he then let Sophie in. She headed into the room where Emma was held and crouched down infront of her. "Hello" she nodded tilting her head at an angle looking in her face. John leant back against the wall as he watched Sophie.
"Whats going on?" Emma questioned. Sophie just stared at her for ages not saying a thing. Before standing up she turned to John,
"Untie her please!" she asked.
"What?"
"I said untie her!" she said with an anger tone to her voice. John went over to her and untied her. "Your free to go!" Sophie said looking towards Emma. John and Emma looked at Sophie confused. "Well don't just stand there!" Sophie said as she opened the door to let her out. Emma hurried along past them and try to be quick.
Sophie and John watched her scuttle off quickly. "I don't understand. Why did you ask me to take her?" John asked, "Tie her up and bring her out here for you to just realease her like that?"
"Because i didn't trust her... i needed answers and she just told me who side shes on and its not ours."
"So why let her go?" he asked.
"Because im good person John. Well thats what she thinks anayway" she smirked. "She only joined our team to get revenge on you because what you did to Desmond."
"How'd you know all this?"
"Because i read her mind. I'd be careful if i was you. I might not be around to help you next time." she said patting his back before heading off.

Zoe squeezed Sawyer's hand tightly as she walked across the village to Juliet's. The seperation of sides was going to prove difficult to communicate civily between one another. She only hoped that they would make an exception for a circumstance like this.
Zoe knocked on the door, her other hand tightening around Sawyer's hand as she waited for the door to answer. As expected, Juliet answered. She looked mildly suprised to see her.
"I've come for Abbie." Zoe blurted out. Juliet's eyes softened and nodded with understandment. She nodded for them both to come in. So they did. Jack was in the kitchen, drinking a glass of water. He looked up at both Zoe and Sawyer as they stepped inside, he glanced at Juliet, who disappeared off into another room without looking at him.
"I'm not here to cause trouble Jack." Zoe answered his question for him. "I know both of your loyalties are far from riding with Ben. I don't want to make today about the fight going on between Christian and Ben. Today is about burying my daughter."
Juliet returned into the room, holding a swadle, Zoe knew Abbie was wrapped up inside. Her eyes already began to water. She took hold of Abbie greatfully, holding on to her tightly. She looked back up at Jack and Juliet.
"You're both welcome to come, to the funeral." Zoe added suddenly. Jack and Juliet exchanged unsure glances.
"I don't know whether that's a good idea.." Juliet began to reply.
"I would like you to be there." Zoe persisted. "I am thankful to you both, for trying to save her life. I owe you for trying. And all the help you have both given me in the times we've known each other." Jack nodded, remaining silent. Juliet smiled weakly.
"Of course. We'll be there." She said softly. Zoe let go of Sawyer's hand and hugged Juliet before they both left.
