"Who was that?" Sophie asked as Ben shut the front door.
"Christian."
"What does he want?" he asked.
"Nothing Sophie...." he turned to her "You should be resting!" as he wrapped an arm around her, leading her back to bed. Sophie smiled as she climbed back into bed she questioned him.
"Don't you hate me? For shooting you? How can you act so normal like it never happen."
"Sophie i told you it was what i wanted. Now lets just move on from it now." as he pulled the sheet over. "Go to sleep and will talk tomorrow." he smiled kissing her cheek. He sat beside her looking at her,
"Ben.....I don't want anyone to know about me. I mean this sickness."
"Its our secret" he smiled. He stayed with her till she drifted off to sleep.

Mel woke with a start and found her father watching over her.
"Dad?" she asked.
"You fainted Melody." he told her.
"Oh." she said quietly as she sat up. A thought suddenly came to her. "Dad, did you kidnap Emma's baby?"
Charles looked at her surprised, "Now why would I do that?"
Mel shrugged, "I don't know. Why would you lie to me all of these years? Why are you fighting Ben for control of the island? Why did you send those soldiers to kill us all?"
Charles ran a tired hand over his face, "You need to understand Melody, when I sent those soldiers here, I hadn't found out where you were yet. If I had known that you had been here, I never would have sent them in case you were harmed."
"What about everyone else here? You would have let them die?"
"I understand your concern sweetheart, but are you really one to condemn me? From what I understand you were recently responsible for a large number of deaths yourself."
Mel flinched as if she had been slapped, "How do you know about that?" she whispered.
Charles squeezed her hand, "I know nearly everything about this island and what has gone on here recently. I don't blame you for doing what was needed to survive."
"What do you want from me?" Mel asked, feeling an overwhelming urge to trust her father.
"I just want my daughter back." he said honestly as he pulled her into his arms.
Mel hugged him back, her eyes squeezed shut to stop tears from coming. She took a deep breath, "You have her. Now tell me what you want me to do."
Charles pulled back and raised an eyebrow at her.
"I'm no fool. I believe that you wanted to find me but I also believe that you are here for something else as well."
"You definitley are my daughter." Charles smiled but then became serious. "Melody, I need your help with something."

Emma couldn't sleep. She was haunted by nightmares about baby Desmond, and of Sayid being tortured by Widmore's men. She knew they were very close, but didn't know how to find them. She kissed Jack on the lips, and he didn't stir. She left him sleeping soundly and slipped out the front door as the morning dawned.
Emma saddled up Jack's horse. Her own Mr. Darcy was still wandering in the jungle and hadn't yet found his way home. She headed for her old shelter on the beach, the place where she felt most at home on the island. This was the place where she and Jack had first acknowledged their love for each other; it was also the place where she had last seen Desmond alive. It was the best place to be alone with her thoughts.
She sat in the sand and watched the sun come up over the glittering water, contemplating the recent events on the island. Widmore was powerful; it was going to be very difficult to get information out of him.
Emma caught a sudden flash of movement to her left. She squinted in the sunlight and was startled to see a strange man emerge from her old shelter and walk towards her. She stood up quickly, and reached for her gun, but she had left it behind in the village. As the man approached her, Emma noticed there was something familiar about him.
“Hello, Emma. I’m Oliver.” He held his hand out for her to shake. She took it tentatively, then gasped. She recognized his eyes; he was the one who had taken Desmond from her in the Orchid. She pulled her hand away sharply and took a step backwards.
“I won’t hurt you,” he reassured her. “I’d like to help you. Please, sit down.”
Emma fell back onto the sand in shock. “Where is my baby?” she asked in a venomous voice.
“We had orders to take him.” Oliver responded.
“You’re not part of the original Orchid crew, are you? I know you work for Widmore. Why did he want my baby?”
Oliver sighed. “I’m sorry I lied. I’m sorry about all of this…I hate what we did to you. But Widmore needs to know everything there is to know about this island, and understanding why certain women are able to give birth is part of that. Desmond has provided us with some answers. Don’t worry; he is safe and well cared for.”
“Why are you here?” Emma glared in response.
“I’m here to do more work for Widmore, to observe your village. There is another woman who appears to be pregnant.”
“I want to see my baby,” Emma demanded.
Oliver looked at her thoughtfully. “I can bring you to him. But there are some conditions. You cannot tell anybody about us, and you have to leave everybody behind to join us. Permanently.”
“I won’t leave Jack,” she responded flatly. “I love him, and he’s Desmond’s father.”
Oliver shrugged. “Then you will never see your baby. It’s your choice. I’ll give you one day to go back to your village and think it over. You can find me here when you’re ready, and I’ll take you to Desmond. But if you breathe one word about this to anybody, especially Jack, then you forfeit your rights to your baby. Nobody can know about us. We’re watching you all the time, so we’ll know if you talk. Do you understand?”
Emma nodded sadly, and tears flooded her eyes. She couldn’t conceive of giving up either Jack or Desmond forever, but as a mother who yearned to hold her newborn baby, she knew what she had to do.
“Good,” Oliver replied. “Emma, I’m sorry. But this is the way it has to be.”

"You want me to betray them all?" Mel whispered when her father finished explaining what he wanted her to do.
"Melody, I understand that you care about them, but this is very important." Charles said.
"I can't do that to Ben or to Christian." she said shaking her head.
"Now why Christian? Why bring him up? You don't remember anything about him."
"He's been kind to me since I came back. He has every right to be angry but he has helped me."
"Ben hasn't." Charled argued, "Ben has virtually held you captive here. He has mistreated you over and over."
"That's not true." Mel cried.
"Melody, tell me how you came to the island."
Mel looked quickly away, "Ethan brought me."
"Who told him to?"
"Ben did."
"And why did Ben order Ethan to bring you here?"
"Because I was pregnant."
"With Ben's child which you didn't have any say in." Charles finished. "And I am betting that he wouldn't let you leave once you got here as well."
Mel thought back to her first days on the island when she argued with Ben over letting her go home. "No, he wouldn't."
"Melody dear, I know that you think you love that man, but he is a monster."
Mel looked up at her father, "I've heard him say the same thing about you."
Charles sighed, "You don't have to decide now. Just promise me you will think about it?"
"Okay?" Mel nodded. "Dad?"
"Yes?"
"Penny is my sister isn't she?" she asked quietly.
"Yes, half at least."
"And she was in love with Desmond?"
Charles looked agitated, "Much to my regret, yes. Why do you ask?"
"Ben sent me to the survivors camp shortly after they first crashed. He gave me a task.'
"What was it?" Charled asked with interest.
"He wanted me to make Desmond fall in love with me."
Charles was quiet for a moment, "And did he?"
A tear escaped from Mel's eye, "He did."
"Where is Desmond now?"
Mel's face crumpled, "He's dead."
"Come Melody." Charles said taking her hand. "It's not your fault."
"You don't know dad. It is my fault. I'm the reason he was killed." Mel sobbed. "He was such a good man. He didn't deserve it."
"You have to stop blaming yourself Melody. You have many talents but that doesn't make you a bad person." he assured as he hugged her. Charles smirked with Mel in his arms. She had managed to make yet another man fall in love with her whens he set her sights on Desmond. He was beginning to see how he could use her special talents to his advantage and her first task would be Ben Linus.

Jack knew something was wrong the moment Emma returned home from the beach, but he didn't say anything until the day was almost over.
"You don't seem like yourself," he said to her. "What's wrong?" he pulled her close to him and kissed her hair.
"I miss Desmond," was all she could say. Jack looked straight into Emma's eyes.
"We're going to find him," he told her firmly. "It may take some time, but we will find him."
Emma merely gazed at him with sad eyes. It was killing her to keep secrets from Jack.
"I have to go check on Sophie," Jack said. "And then I'm going to come back and cook you dinner, and we'll talk about what to do next, okay?" He smiled warmly at her, then kissed her. Emma lost herself in Jack's kiss; she never wanted to let go. They held each other for a long time, both reluctant to end the kiss.
Finally, Emma pulled away. "You should go to Sophie," she reminded him gently.
Jack headed toward the door, then turned toward her just before he stepped out. "We're going to get our baby back, Emma. We'll be a proper family soon."
Emma smiled back. "I know. I love you, Jack."
Once Jack left, Emma pulled out her backpack and began placing some necessities inside. She wrote a note and left it for Jack, telling him not to look for her. Then she ran. On her way to the stable, she bumped into Juliet.
"Emma!" Juliet exclaimed. "Is everything okay?"
Emma nodded. "I'm fine. But there's something I need to tell you, and please don't ask any questions."
"Okay." Juliet agreed, intrigued. "Shoot."
"If you know of anyone in the village who might be pregnant, please tell them to be very careful. They're not safe here."
Juliet looked startled. Zoe's pregnancy wasn't confirmed yet, so she held off saying anything to Emma about it. She simply nodded in agreement. "I will."
"And Juliet, please...look after Jack. I'll be gone for a little while."
"Where are you..." Juliet started to say, but Emma shook her head vigorously.
"I can't tell you, and I can't tell Jack. I just have to go."
Emma left Juliet with an astonished look on her face and headed to the stable. She didn't allow herself to think about leaving Jack and her friends behind; the only thing driving her was the possibility of seeing her baby again very, very soon.

"What can i do for you Jack?" Ben asked as he greeted him at the door, lettting him in the house.
"I checking to see if Sophie is ok?"
"Shes fine!" Ben said giving him a look as if he wanted him to leave.
"But the past few days. You being shot Sophie collapsing. Richard whisking her off! Whats going on?"
"Nothing." Ben said. "She was just shattered. Shes had some rest and shes fine!"
"Let a professional see her." he said pushing past Ben.
"Theres no need!" she said coming out the nursery. "Like Ben said i'm fine." she smiled at Jack. Jack glanced over to Ben and back to Sophie.
"If you need anything....."
"I know where you are." Sophie finished of his sentence. "Thanks Jack." as she leaded him to the front door and opened it to let him out. She sighed at leanst against the door as she closed behind her. She looked over to Ben. "Thank you." she said.
"Your welcome."

"Are you sure you know what to do?" Charles asked.
Mel rolled her eyes, "Dad we have been over this like twenty times. I have it.'
"Don't roll your eyes at me Melody. This is important."
Mel instantly felt like she was sixteen again and her father was getting on to her for staying out late. "Fine dad."
"You should go." Charles said, handing her the walkie.
Mel nodded and reached for her gun that sat on the kitchen table but her father stopped her.
"You can't take that with you Melody."
"You want me to go out there with nothing?" she asked.
"If he saw that you had a gun the whole plan would be ruined. I know you can protect yourself without a gun."
Mel sighed, "You're right. I better go."
"Melody?" her father asked.
"Yes?" she said turning around.
Charles hugged her tightly before letting her go, "Be safe."
Mel smiled softly, "Bye dad." before she left her house and walked out into the dark night.
She stole into the jungle and made her way to the small building her father had told her about. Once inside she pulled the walkie from her belt. She took a deep breath before pushing the call button.
"Ben?" she said in a voice full of worry. "Ben? Please pick up Ben!" she cried.
"Mel?" his familiar voice came on the line. He sounded like he had been asleep.
"Thank God Ben."
"Mel, what is wrong?"
Mel allowed terror to enter her voice, "It's my father Ben! We were walking in the jungle when he just changed. It was horrible. He locked me inside some building and left me."
She heard Ben curse, "Do you know where you are?" he asked, the worry in his voice evident.
"No, I'm guessing it's a hatch but I've never been to it before. Ben, I'm so scared."
"Everything wil be fine Mel. I have a good idea where you are."
"Ben?" Mel whispered.
"Yes?"
"I'm sorry. You were right. I should have listened to you about my father."
Ben sighed, "He is your father. I can understand why you would want to think the best of him."
"I wish I knew why he did this."
"I know why he did it Mel. Do you remember what I told you? I told you that your father would use you against me."
"Oh no." breathed Mel.
"Do you remember the rest of our conversation Mel?"
Mel nodded her head but was unable to answer him.
"I told you that if he forced me to choose, I would choose you. I still mean that. I won't let him kill you."
A tear ran down Mel's face and she squeezed her eyes together. "Ben." she whispered.
"I will be there soon. I promise." she heard before his radio clicked off.
Mel turned her own radio off before throwing it against the opposite wall. She leaned back and let herself slide to the floor. Her head cradled by her hands, she let the tears fall.
What had she done?

Emma followed Oliver away from the village. Her thoughts centered solely on Jack. Already she missed him more than she could have imagined. She wondered if Desmond were really waiting for her at the other end, or had she just left Jack for no reason at all? Could this man in front of her be trusted? He seemed kind, but clearly he was malicious enough to steal her baby from her. Emma sighed.
Suddenly she recognized the path that they were on as the path to the Orchid. "You're taking me to the Orchid? Why? Jack and Juliet scoured this place..."
Oliver turned around and held a finger to his lips. "Shhh." he admonished. "No questions."
They reached the Orchid, and Oliver held the door open for her. Once inside, he walked towards an oversized hospital monitor and pushed it aside to reveal a hidden passageway. He motioned for Emma to follow him.
The passage led to a spacious and pleasant living space, similar to the Swan station. In one corner another man and a woman - Emma remembered them from her brief time in the Orchid - were nestled on a couch reading books. They looked up when Oliver and Emma entered the room.
Oliver spoke to his colleagues. "Emma will be living with us from now on," he said pleasantly. "I think she'll be very useful to our work."
"Does Widmore know?" the woman asked.
"He will shortly," Oliver replied.
They nodded a curt welcome to Emma and returned to their books. Clearly, her presence had been expected, and wasn't of much interest to them.
Emma's head was spinning. She placed a hand against the wall to steady herself. "I'd like to see my baby now," she said nervously. "And my friend Sayid as well."
Oliver smiled smoothly back at her. "All in good time, Emma." He placed a hand on her back. "Let me show you where you'll be living. You're one of us now."

Sophie noticed Ben sneaking out the house when she got up to get herself a drink.
"Ben?" she asked. Ben was then opening the front door as he stopped he turned to her. "Where are you going?" she asked.
"I have to do something."
"Ben what are you doing?" she asked.
"Don't ask..."
"Is it to do with Widmore! Then if it is i....."
"Sophie! I promise its not. Richard radioed me. He needs some help with something. I didn't want to wake you."
"At this time of night?" she asked. She didn't believe anything he was saying. "Ben whats really going on?"
"Mel....."
Sophie rolled her eyes turned away from Ben her hands in her face. "Widmore has taken her to a hatch and locked her up. She radioed me! She needs help."
"I would let her just rot in there." Sophie said. Ben just looked at her then turned again to go out.
"Ben! Don't do this!"
"I have too...."

Mel heard someone outside the door to the room she was in and jumped up from the floor. Slowly Ben pushed open the door. She ran to him and threw hers arms around him.
"I knew you would come for me Ben!" she cried.
Ben hugged her back, "Are you okay. Did he hurt you?"
Mel shook her head, "No, he just left me in here. Thank you for coming." she said as she glanced behind him.
"What are you looking for?" he asked turning aroun and seeing nothing.
"Nothing." Mel said.
"I should really ask who you are looking for shouldn't I?" Ben said his voice becoming hard.
Mel looked at him warily, "What do you mean?"
Ben scoffed, "The men who your father sent to wait outside until I arrived. The men who were meant to ambush me as I tried to rescue you."
Mel paled, "Ben." she started.
"Do you really think me so naive Mel? After everything that we have been through do you think I can't tell when you are lying to me?"
Mel felt tears come to her eyes, "I can explain."
Ben shrugged, "You want to explain why you lied to me or why you sold me out to your father? Honestly, I don't want to hear either."
Mel looked down, "I'm sorry Ben. He's my father."
"And what am I to you Mel, nothing?"
"That's not fair. You can't pin that on me. You chose to marry Sophie and abandon me."
"You were already married.
"Against my will!" Mel yelled. "You could have fought for me. But you didn't, you didn't even try."
"You have no idea what I went through when I lost you!" Ben raised his voice surprising them both. Ben thumped his chest, "When I saw that ring on your finger I felt like my heart was ripped out. I wanted to die. And I was prepared to until you came to me and told me to leave. To flee the island because you husband planned to kill me. So I did. I did exactly what youtold me to! I didn't leave you behind, you sent me away!"
Mel took a step back at his rage, "I don't remember that."
"Of course you don't! You don't remember the most important things that have happened. You keep blaming me for things that aren't my fault. And you know what? I'm happy with Sophie because no matter what she is always there, has always been there for me, unlike you."
Mel felt a sharp pain in her chest at his hurtful words but she saw the anger filled pain written across his face and knew he wasn't just telling her this to hurt her, he was being honest.
"We keep going through this same issue over and over Mel. I don't think I can handle it anymore. It doesn't matter how right we are for one another, it is never going to happen. So I want you to stop throwing my marriage my face and leave ours in the past."
Mel shook her head, "I don't know if I can. It's all I remember."
"Well you're going to have to try. And you'll have plenty of time to do just that where I'm taking you." ben said as he grabbed her arm.
"What?" Mel asked in shock.
Ben pulled a length of rope from his pack and began to bind her arms behind her back. She was too dumbstruck to fight him.
"Did you really think I was going to let you hang around so your father can use you against me? Charles Widmore knows exactly what has happened between us no matter how clueless he claims to be. This charade was only his first attempt to exploit our former relationship. He's not going to get a second chance." Ben said coldy as he shoved her out of the door.
"Where are you going to take me?" Mel asked softly.
Ben smiled, "Do you really think I am going to answer that? Don't worry Mel, we're going somewhere familiar. In fact, you might think it feels just like home." he chuckled before throwing a bag over her head and pulling her into the jungle.

Oliver led Emma deeper into the secret inner chambers of the Orchid. The maze of rooms seemed to stretch forever, digging into the side of the mountain. Finally, Oliver opened the door to a tiny cell that was sparsely furnished with a simple cot, a chair and a table. The room had one wall that was entirely made of glass. On the other side of the glass wall was another room, similarly furnished, and slouched in one corner Emma spotted Sayid, looking weary and defeated.
"Sayid!" she yelled, and ran up to the glass. He raised his head in response, and acknowledged her presence with a barely perceptible nod of his head.
"What have you done to him?" she turned towards Oliver, seething.
"Not me, that's a better question for Chris and Nathan. They've been watching over your friend. Emma, I'm so glad you decided to join us. think you'll find yourself quite at home here. "
"I want to see my baby," she demanded. "Take me to him NOW."
"We'll bring Desmond to you very shortly. Please make yourself comfortable. I'll be back soon with some dinner for you and Sayid." Oliver responded, moving towards the door.
"I don't understand!" Emma cried. "If you're going to keep me a prisoner, why didn't you just keep me when you had me in the Orchid the first time?"
"It's very important that it be your decision to join us, Emma. We couldn't make that choice for you. And this is all very temporary, a sort of orientation. Once you've realized that the best way for you and your little baby to survive life on this island is by working towards Widmore's goals, the happier you'll be. Trust me on this." Oliver closed the door, and Emma heard the lock turning.
She glanced around her surroundings, then over at Sayid. He remained hunched and listless in the corner.
"What have they done to you, Sayid?" she asked softly as she sat on the floor by the glass wall. She held her hands against the glass, trying to reach him. "And what have we gotten ourselves into?"

It took a full ten minutes of sitting in the small boat Ben had shoved her into before Mel realized where he was taking her.
"Ben, no!" she cried when she had figured it out.
"Took you longer than I thought." he chuckled.
"It's gone Ben, there is nothing to go to." she said facing the direction of his voice since her eyes were still covered.
"That is your fault if I recall." he mused.
"You said you understood why I did that Ben." Mel whispered.
"I do, but it doesn't change it's loss any."
"You can't let it go can you?"
"You're one to talk Mel." Ben scoffed.
"Why can't you remember the good times there Ben? Instead of focusing on the bad why don't you remember the joy it brought us?"
"You'll find I feel very little joy lately Mel." Ben said quietly.
"Ben." she said deperately trying to make him understand. "It's where I first saw Will. Where you first held him. It's where we started that stupid charade of a relationship to fool everyone else. It's where we fell in love Ben. Don't you remember?"
"Yes, I remember." Ben whispered as he continued to row. "I also remember when you sent me away. Told me to go be with Sophie and leave you, the woman I was in love with."
"She was pregnant Ben. At least we thought she was. And I thought she was going to die because of it. I made a sacrifice. I thought you would appreciate that. I thought we would have time after she was gone. I was wrong."
"You read my journal? The one I left?"
"Of course." Mel smiled, "I still have it, tucked away in the house."
"Good. I meant it all then, you know. I didn't make anything up."
"I know Ben."
Mel felt the boat hit the sandy bottom of the shore. She listened as Ben got out and pulled the boat in so it wouldn't flaot away. Then he came for her. He took her bound wrists and helped her out of the boat before pulling out a knife and cutting the ropes.
Mel massaged her wrists, "The bears have all gone to the main island, right?" she asked with worry.
She couldn't see it, but she could feel Ben smiling sadly, "Yes Mel, they swam over there long ago."
They stood in silence for a long time, Mel's eyes stiil covered until she felt Ben move closer and place a soft kiss on her lips. Mel didn't bother to wipe away the tears the ran down her face as he finally removed the clothe that covered her eyes.
She blinked in the bright light and focused on Ben. He looked conflicted as he moved back to the boat. Mel let out a shakey breathe as he pushed it into the water then looked back to her.
"I'll miss you." he said and Mel knew he was telling the truth. Mel could only nod as she absently massaged one of her wrists.
Mel watched as Ben climbed into the boat and took up the oar and began to paddle into the open sea, away from her. She watched with tears in her eyes until he was out of sight. Only then did she turn around to see the remnants of Hydra Island.

Oliver brought dinner to Sayid and Emma and left them to eat their bland Dharma rations in peace. When he reappeared, he held Emma’s baby.
Emma jumped up when she saw Desmond and her plate of food crashed to the floor. Sobs overwhelmed her as she took her baby out of Oliver’s hands. It was impossible for her to speak.
Oliver left Desmond with her for several hours. Sayid watched mother and child interact from his side of the glass partition and smiled at Emma’s radiant joy. Desmond seemed healthy and content, and Emma felt an indescribable surge of love for him.
When Oliver returned, Emma threw her arms around Oliver in a happy embrace. “Thank you!” she cried, and kissed his cheek impulsively. Oliver blushed and patted her back awkwardly.
“I’m sorry I have to take him back, but I’ll bring him to you tomorrow. I promise.” He claimed Desmond from Emma’s arms with a gentleness that surprised her. Her tears renewed upon this second parting, but she believed Oliver would fulfill his promise. She watched as they left the room and the door locked behind them.
For the first time since they had been thrown into this strange prison together, Sayid spoke up. He sat as close as possible to Emma as the glass wall would allow, and spoke softly. “You seem to be his weakness, Emma. He has a genuine affection for you, and is clearly driven by his guilt over taking your baby. You must encourage his feelings.”
Emma laughed nervously. “Seduction has never been my forte, Sayid. That’s better left to someone like Mel.”
“Trust me,” Sayid responded. “This might be our only chance out of this place.”
“But Jack…” Emma began.
“I won’t breathe a word to him.” Sayid promised, and held his palm against the glass.
Emma thought carefully for a moment, then relented. “I’ll do it.” She touched her palm to his, sealing her promise to Sayid. “But we’re not going anywhere without Desmond.”

The compund was a mere shell of what it used to be. It looked like a war zone. When Mel had made the decision to blow up the Hydra it was because she felt she had no other choice. It had been crawling with Dharma men who meant harm to her family and everyone else on the island. She never could have guessed that a year later she would be the threat to the island.
Mel picked her way through the wreckage carefully, hoping all of the explosives had already gone off. She knew she could very easily die here and Ben had known it too. But he had left her there anyway which proved that he had moved on. She hadn't even had the heart to fight him. She let herself be left on this foresaken place.
Mel wrung her hands when an image of her children came to her mind. What if she never got back to them? Would they remember their mother if they never saw her again? Or would they be sent back to Ben with Sophie to play their mother. Mel shuddered, above all things she didn't want that to happen. From what she had seen of Sophie she was unstable and not in control of herself. She didn't want her raising her children.
What about Christian? Would he look for her after how she had treated him? Or her father? If what Ben said was true then her father probably wouldn't even bother to search for her. He'd just find another way to steal the island from Ben.
"Damnit!" Mel yelled as she turned to the ocean. The main island was barely visible. There was no hope of swimming to it. Her strength would give out fast fighting the current and that was if the shark left her alone.
No, she was stuck here on the Hydra. Her own personal punishment for destroying it in the first place. She could hope and pray all she wanted that someone would come for her but Ben had thought this one through. This was the last place she would think anyone would be. No one was coming, Mel was alone.

Zoe was making some lunch for Charlie when Sawyer came through into the living area, having just had a shower and just got changed. He smiled at her, and she smiled weakly back at him.
"I'm just going to go see Hurley." He explained to her as he walked over to her, kissing Zoe and Charlie both on the forehead before heading for the front door. "I won't be long." He opened the front door, and there was Juliet, in mid motion to knocking on the door.
"Oh - hey Juliet. What do you want?" He asked.
"I've just come to see Zoe actually." Juliet replied, in her usual calm tone, nodding at Zoe, smiling slightly. Zoe watched slightly nervously as Sawyer allowed Juliet through into the house before closing the door behind him as he left.
"I assume you still haven't told him then." Juliet said to her as she walked over to Zoe.
"No." Zoe shook her head and continued feeding Charlie. "I'm not saying anything to him before I am really sure."
"Well, you can be sure today." Juliet replied. Zoe shot her a frowning look. Juliet gave her a significant look before extracting a pregnancy test from her pocket. Relieved that Juliet had kept it hidden when in Sawyer's presence, Zoe took it.
"It's not good to keep secrets from the ones you love. The ones you trust." Juliet continued. "The more you delay it, the harder it's going to be telling him." Zoe avoided Juliet's gaze. She knew she was right. If only Juliet knew about how complicated everything was, she would probably have a better understanding.
"Thank you Juliet." Zoe replied quietly.
"You should never feel alone Zoe. If you want to talk to somebody about anything, you know you always can. You don't always have to rely on Sawyer if you feel you can't talk to him about certain things." Juliet added knowingly. "Don't isolate yourself, it will only make things worse."
"I know. I know." Zoe replied quickly. "Look - there's nothing up ok? I'm fine."
"Right." Juliet replied unconvinced. "Well. Let me know how things go. I've got to go. I've got a few things to be getting on with today." Zoe nodded, and Juliet said goodbye before leaving. Zoe sighed heavily and she slumped down on the sofa, sighing heavily, brushing her hand over her forehead, closing her eyes for just a moment.
"Liam." Came an exciteable voice from the kitchen. Zoe's eyes flashed open, and she looked over at Charlie, in his high chair, banging his fists playfully. "Liam!" He giggled again. Zoe stood up slowly, quite shocked.
"What did you just say?" She asked slowly.
"Liam!" He repeated, and giggled again.
"How do you know..." Zoe trailed off as he bent down to his head level, watching him closely. "Who is Liam, Charlie?" She asked. She recognised the name, but couldn't remember where from, it was so long ago.
"I want Liam!" Charlie demanded suddenly. "Liam! Liam! Liam!" Then the name clicked. Liam Pace. Charlie's brother. Her eyes widened in suprise. She was sure she had never mentioned Liam infront of baby Charlie.
"How do you know Liam, Charlie?" She asked him, feeling ridiculous, she knew Charlie was too young to conduct a proper conversation with him.
"He's coming!" He replied suddenly, and giggled again. Zoe gave him a look of sympathy, and picked him out his high chair.
"Oh honey, Liam isn't coming. He lives far away." Zoe whispered to him as she cradled him.
"You're not alone." He chirpped up suddenly. Zoe frowned at him.
"Maybe it's time for your afternoon nap young man." She replied, wagging her finger at him and walked off into the bedroom with him. He was far heavier now, compared to last week. He was growing alarmingly quick, and now he had just said his first words, however peculiar that he had voiced Liam as his first word.
Zoe was sure she had never mentioned him to Charlie before. Certain in fact. She had talked about his father to him. All the time - when Sawyer wasn't around, as not to make him feel uncomfortable.
Zoe lay Charlie in his cot, tucking him in, although he was having none of it, and refused to go to sleep. She sighed, and left him to it, nipping quickly into the bathroom, to take the pregnancy test Juliet had given her.
