I have put in a question to a friend of mine who has the chat on his forum. I am trying to find out whether there is a way of minizing the upload time. He has over 1500 members and at least 40 or 50 use the chat. And he seems to have no problems at all. Of course he has no ads. If that's one of the problem, I have been thinking of getting rid of them anyway. So let's hang in there till I get more answers from my friend. whooooo edith you know i tell ya time and time again, but i love ya ;D whoo yay me too *looks around shyly* lol

i have fast connection as well, so it really doesn't matter to me. but yes, the place did seem more alive when the chat screen was visible. i agree with edith, what's wrong with having it at least during the hiatus?

One reason I'm sticking up for the previous decision is that there were people who I spoke to who didn't like the Chatango but didn't feel comfortable saying anything about it publicly. There are people who will put up with it reluctantly even though, most of the time, it's only used by a couple of people. Because of that, and that I know for a fact that the Chatango will slow down the site for some people, I'm against bringing it back. However, I don't care enough to rehash the debate over and over, so if the vocal majority wants it back [even though we've already had this debate, it was open for a very long time, and we're doing this all over again very soon after the original poll just with the hope that the results will be different; I think it's kind of crappy to try to invalidate those peoples' opinions]...go for it. I guess it's possible the chat made the site more interesting or something, and I'm just not getting it. I think the "just for now" thing is a joke, though. Come on, guys. If you put it back up, you know it's staying.

*puts entire debate in coffin* *digs 7-foot hole* *kicks coffin in* *sets it aflame* *covers for eternity* That would be fine, but we live in a democracy. If the majority wants it one way, I'll go with the flow.

Look, I'm all for the forum being active and busy and exciting and all that jazz. I love this place and have faith in our staff and our members...I think we all do. If the majority decided we were better off without the Chatango loading on the main page, then obviously there was something about it that caused a problem. If we need to have an instant chat, then perhaps it's in the forum and the members' best interests to see if there's a better way to go about having an instant chat. There were two publicly voiced complaints about the Chatango- it was slow to load and slow to let you scroll down the page. Have you looked into any other options, other chat programs?
What I'm saying is that I think, at the very least, it's worth exploring other options before we just stick members with this again, after they said it was too inconvenient.

I have a fast connection but it annoyed me when it was there - things just didn't work right. I'm all for the interaction that the chat brings, but it would be nice if there was a better way of doing it, so it doesn't interfere with the everyday viewing of the boards.
For that reason, I voted no ;D

I'm looking into other choices. Proboards has one. I don't know whether it is integrated with the board or outside. I need to find out. I am also trying to find out how other boards that have chattango are coping with it. Maybe it was something we did wrong when attaching it to our board.

I don't mind about the Chatango box being there and that's because I have a fast internet connection that is not affected by loading problems. Anyway I think i would be kinda annoyed if I had a hard time loading the Board main page bcause of the chat box, and that's why I voted for the clickable banner last time. I mean, if I want to chat, I can easily click a silly icon and start chatting on another page, right? I admit, it's ages I don't visit Chatango. But that's not bcoz the box disappeared! That's bcoz I don't have time for chatting at the mo. On the other hand, I'd be happy if the box could bring new ppl or keep the Board active. I think we should just ask each other if it would be actually useful to bring the box back. Maybe ppl just don't have time to chat anymore, call it the holidays, call it the hiatus or whatever. K, I just wanted to make my point coz I didn't want ppl to think I'm not interested in the board issues.
[ Sorry if I've been talking nonsense - just wanted to help ;D]

I'm not 100% sure but I think the Proboards Chatbox is a code you put in the forum header. The actual chat box can be at the bottom or the top of the forum page. It's not as pretty as the Chatango box but it seemed to work well on the forum I was a member of that had it. (That forum is now defunct) I was on dial-up when that forum was active and I never noticed the chat box slowing page loads. (The Frappr map slowed things down). I'll see if I can think of any other chat options you could try. We don't have chat on the TOQ forum (yet) but I know a few options the HIC Yahoo group tried. (I'm not sure if they can be embedded in the forum though.) ETA: I just did some checking and the Proboards chat is provided by a third party. I don't think it's the same as the forum I mentioned had. I'll still do some more checking around.
