Rebecca Mader could qualify as one of the world's foremost "Lost" experts.
Like many people, she's seen every episode. Unlike most, she saw them in one furious stretch, just before joining the show.
"It was like a drug," Mader recalls. "I was, OK, just one more hour and then I'll go to the gym.' But I kept watching."
Now "Lost" is suddenly part of TV's best night. On Thursdays, it will follow "Ugly Betty" and "Grey's Anatomy," each with five post-strike episodes.
For "Lost," this is the season of the four "freighter people" who claim to be rescuers. They're played by Jeff Fahey, Ken Leung, Jeremy Davies and Mader ... who knew nothing about "Lost" until recently.
"People thought I had a mental disorder, because I didn't watch the show," she said.
Well, she'd been busy. At 28, she's been a successful model, has done guest roles in lots of shows and has been a regular in one (ABC's "Justice").
She was also in the pilot film for "Mr. and Mrs Smith," playing the top assistant in a secret-agent team led by Jordana Brewster. When the pilot was rejected, she was available for a "Lost" audition.
Mader bought the first three seasons and started watching. "I decided I really, really wanted this. I was watching Lost' when I got the call to say I had the part," she said.
Until then, she said, she was unaware of one important detail. "I didn't realize Lost' was shot in Hawaii. I was (like), Oh yeah, I can live with that.' "
That required her to stock up on supersized sunscreen. Mader, pale-skinned and red-haired, uses lots of it.
Back in England, there were fewer blue skies to worry about. She grew up in Cambridge, where her dad was a lawyer, her mom worked in a department store and their lives were on the town (not college) side.
Mader skipped college and modeled. She was the redhead alongside Beyonce in L'Oreal commercials.
Then came New York, all of those guest roles and now a key one as Charlotte Lewis, one of the four "rescuers" who arrived via freighter.
Mader says she didn't ask any more about it. "I actually like not knowing."
These "freighter people" don't seem to care about the island survivors. They obsess on extracting the evil Ben Linus.
After intensively watching the show, Mader has found the work fascinating. Suddenly, she's up-close with the people who filled her TV set.
The biggest surprise? "Michael Emerson, who plays Ben so well," Mader said. "He's so sweet; he's one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet."
That's just real life, though. On "Lost," he's a schemer who has put the island in turmoil.
