Came across this interview with Leigh Whannell, and it has a bit of detail about Zep on this page... actionadventure.about.com/od/celebrityinterviews/a/102505whannell_4.htm" Thinking back to Saw, what did Zep the orderly do that he didn’t appreciate life enough? You’ve got to remember, in the editing of a film certain things get lost. It depends what you have time for. Zep was a guy who was this lowly guy on the hospital food chain who let himself get pushed around. Again, a backstory that I wrote down. You didn’t see it as much in the film, but I know it. He’s this friendless guy, lives on his own, has no relationships, he’s very awkward socially. This is the character of Zep so Jigsaw was kind of waking him up, giving him a little bit of power in a way. Zep was different to a lot of other players in the game, because he was helping Jigsaw in a way. In his mind, he believed he wasn’t a victim. He believed that he, even though he was to some degree, he believed that he’d been given some power. And Jigsaw, the villain, needs someone to help him. So that’s who Zep was." It's probably not anything we at this board hadn't figured out already, but it's a nice confirmation of it.

Ah yes, I have this saved somewhere. The entire interview is great, then I saw the bit about Zep and went "Woohoo!"

I really wish they had put more of the backstory about Zep in the movie. A lot of people seemed to be confused about the Zep character. And of course it would have been great to see more of our man.

For some reason, I couldn't get the interview to read it! Oh, well! I think that poor Zep was a total victim and I don't think he wanted to kill anybody! He just wanted to live! I'm sure he thought about his life and maybe had regrets....I'm sorry to think that you think that he wanted to help Jigsaw and that you think he wanted to kill people! Then you shouldn't like Zep so much and be happy that he died. I'm sorry Flummery, but that's my view of Zep and it's not gonna change. we will have to agree to disagree!

I didn't say I thought he wanted to help Jigsaw...the quote from the article says he was helping Jigsaw in a way, which he obviously was, whether he wanted to or was forced. He was a victim in this situation, but there are deeper aspects to Zep that are not so black and white. I didn't say I thought he wanted to kill people...the article says he liked the power, which I agree with. As for not liking Zep...that's true. I don't think his motivations are pure. I like the way Michael played him. I liked the intricacies of it, the emotions and motivations, and what it adds to the movie. But I do think there's more to Zep than "oh no, Jigsaw wants me to kill people, I better do it to save my own life". As for being happy he died...I don't necessarily think the world is better off when anyone dies, whether we're talking about the fictional world or real.

It's fine. It's just a character.
