I've been an artist, a writer and an editor. Of the three, I would say writing involves the least amount of "native" tools. Although you can rack up as many references books and props and materials or whatever you might need to write. But I found the creative process is what it is and is different for each person and for each discipline. But the most important thing is to just do it. It is helpful to have mastered grammar, spelling and punctuation, etc., simply because that will make it easier to navigate in the world of publishing, and I have found the most gifted writers and reporters are the best for editors to work with, while the lesser talented can be a bit peevish.
I am very fascinated by Stephen Pinker's work on language as a basic function/tool of humans.
