OK, this audiobook is not for everyone. You either got have 20-some hours of free time or space it over several days to a month. If you want to own it, it'll cost you $25 at iTunes. I don't know how much it might cost on CD. Otherwise you might check your public library. It's the worth the expense or trouble.
That said, O…M…G… I was so blown away. Again, people might quibble about accents, etc. But if you thought his voice was amazing in "Lost," you will be stunned by this audiobook. How that man can shift from The Boss, to Tiny, to Judge Irwin, the protagonsist and others, back and forth without losing a step, how he can convey the emotion, the situation and innuendo without losing the pace, I don't know, but it's sheer genius. It ought to be illegal.
I took five nights to listen (four hours a crack). Not because I'm a glutton for torture, but because I got so drawn in that I forgot the time. Some audiobooks I buy as a sleep aid, this one had just the opposite effect.
Be warned, RPW used language that was peculiar to that era, in particular, the N word, and today that would cost him all his awards and some jail time probably in our hyper-PC world.
Sometimes an audiobook will muffle the writer's work, but this one makes you just drop your jaw and think, "egad!" It actually advances your appreciation of the writing. ME pulled the words off the page and made them breathe. Whoever did got ME for this job should know they did a great thing.
