I have seen speculation that the Smoke Monster fits into the mythology of the genie, which can be read about a bit more at the Wikipedia site on genie. The notion has a lot to offer in understanding what the h*** is going on, but like all things LOST, the writers and creator are borrowing from mythology and legends, not following them.
