I keep thinking about WHO or WHAT the smoke monster is and it's driving me nuts Lol!... Correct me if i'm wrong but if MIB is the smoke and he was being held inside the cabin then how come the smoke was still roaming freely round the island?

As the monster would say, the correct title is "Who is the Black Smoke?" not What.
The cabin element has been quite confusing indeed, however. I imagine we're not gonna have that series of events cleared until we get Jacob/MIB flashbacks- if we're ever gonna get flashbacks anymore. That's a drawback against the sideways reality right there- we still need a few more flashbacks instead of flash sideways at some point.

I think Jacob was in the cabin, protected by the black ash. When the black ash got disrupted, Jacob got booted and moved to the statue's foot. That's when Nemesis moved in, and pretended to be Christian Shephard in season 4.

But who disrupted the ash in the first place? Maybe Christian wasn't a form of the monster, but someone who got 'claimed' by him after his dead body landed on the island- and then he broke the ash for him. Perhaps since he was the father of a candidate, that made him significant enough to revive and use.

Maybe Christian himself was a candidate? I'd love to investigate that cave wall in detail to see just who's on there - I'm sure there are some Easter eggs waiting for us!!!

well didn't locke disrupt the ash circle when ben took him to the cabin the first time? i think i remember him bending down and picking some up... that would have then allowed the smoke monster to enter as Christian and would maybe explain why Locke heard Jacob say, "help me": he was now in danger of the MIB.

But he didn't actually break the line. One of my theories that falls into the slapstick bin, is that it got broken when Hurley charged away from the cabin after the eye stared back at him through the window. It would just crack me up if the circle was broken by some guy running away screaming and breaking the line by accident. It would suck though if that put him in Smokey's crosshairs.

I don't think it was Jacob in the cabin as it showed Jacob in the statue way back in the 1800s (1845) as you can see 'The Black Rock' in the distance when he was making that tapestry. so maybe he was alway's in there. I still think that it was MIB or someone else maybe. ;D

Jacob had to have been in there at some point, since Ilana seemed to think he'd be there in "The Incident" before she found it empty. But Smokey was definately using it in Cabin Fever, and probably in MBTC, so he likely got access sometime between the 815 crash and the events of MBTC.
Perhaps at some point, the war between Jacob and MIB got so bad, he needed the cabin for his own protection- maybe after the statue was destroyed. He probably went there between the 70's and 80's, if the vision in "Cabin Fever" was correct and Horace built the cabin - which is another confusing cabin tidbit we need explained.

Remember in 3x20 'The Man Behind the curtain' when all hell breaks loose in the cabin and you see a split second of a man sitting in the chair... well to me it does actually look like MIB he's got the same shaped head (although when I first saw it I thought it looked like Locke with hair ha ha ha.
