If the monster has been associating with Claire for three years, she probably knows he can shape shift into other forms. Therefore, he probably let her know before the Ajira 316 crash that he would next look like Locke- though he probably left out all the details of why and how he would do it.
As for infection, the monster can probably infect people like Claire and Rousseau's team up close, through some sort of process we don't know. Of course, he could have therefore done it to everyone and got this whole thing over with from the start, but there were probably limits to how much and how often he could do it before Jacob died. Hence, the Temple spring being tainted with the infection powers after Jacob died.

Just some little things I noticed. Some may be significant, others just nice little nuggets: - Family photos: 1st one of Christian, Jack and Margo. Christian looks like a different person than the later Christian.
- Bottle of McCutcheon on the liquor table at Margo's house.
- Claire's lair has fresh dynamite, none of that low quality stuff from the Black Rock.
- Jack remarked that Christian led Jack to the caves. Makes me wonder if the caves is one of Smokey's hangouts.
- Someone bad is going to the temple and we likely know who's showing that someone the way — Jin.
Jack's talk with David after the audition was perhaps one of the finest in "LOST." All the LA X scenes suggest to me that this is how our characters have become now that they redeemed themselves or accomplished what they were supposed to do on the island and now they are back to their old lives and can appreciate how good it is to be able to enjoy life. They are all much happier or at least content or willing to accept their situation. • Locke and Helen decide that they can make a life together with him in a wheelchair. • Ben seems to relish his job as a teacher. • Cancer-stricken Rose decides to live the life she has left • Jack tells his son, "In my eyes you will never fail." Wow, what a powerful thing to tell a kid and what a great way to defeat a family tradition of crushing the spirit of your children. It doesn't tell us how it all ended on the island. It's not sexy or action-packed, and it may not be at all how it will turn out. They might all die on the island, but we are least being shown how it would be if they got the chance to do it right.

Clearly, the alternate reality is meant to be a "through the looking glass" version of their story, right? I'm a hardcore Alice fan. This episode made me very, very happy!!

Yet again another disappointing episode. Who cares if Jack has a son? What has that got to do with anything? Time is rapidly running out and they just keep coming up with more stupid questions. I'm seriously debating not continuing with this season.
The only comment worthy parts of this episode were Jin's boxers and psycho bitch claire. I hope she does axe Kate in the chest. Once more we are subjected to a Jackass tantrum [/spoiler] I think it was important for the reasons that Mythic just pointed out. Jack became the loving father that he never had, and it shows that he has been through a meaningful catharsis even if we don't know the full story behind it yet. Kate, on the other hand, is the same old Kate, still running away. So why she hasn't experienced a meaningful character change on the same level as Jack and Locke seems a glaring discrepancy to me.
The Jack story was more compelling to me than psycho-Claire, and not just because he looked super cute in this epi. I just thought it was fantastic storytelling. Thanks, Darlton!!!
I would not cry if Claire knocked off Kate.
And yes, we most definitely need an answer for Jin's boxers.

so i think the reason Kate hasn't had some drastic change in her alternate life, like Jack and Locke have had, is because she's not a candidate. who knows, maybe she was actually never supposed to be on the island... although she did meet Jacob in her childhood... i don't know, just throwing that out there

She's just not one of the 'special' numbers, which makes me think that she might bite the dust this season. But who knows!!

She's just not one of the 'special' numbers, which makes me think that she might bite the dust this season. But who knows!! Think outside of the box. TPTB do. Kate is # 51. That's 15 backwards. I have a few theories about that: 1. Jacob placed her as 51. That way, his nemesis can't claim her. As it's not a special number, he wouldn't think of her as a candidate.
2. Sawyer is #15. They might be the deciding factor of evil vs good. Now, which of one these two criminals are going to be good or evil?
3. When the show started, I read that TPTB wanted Jack to die immediately and Kate was going to be the heroine. ABC didn't like that idea. So they killed the pilot instead. Maybe Kate is still the savior and that's why she is 51.

I voted it at 7... thought it was good but didn't watch all of it as i'm still getting over this damn illness I can't even recall what I did see of it other than Claire stitching up Jin's leg *which made me feel worse*

Finally got round to watching this ep properly after nearly 2 weeks of illness. I saw it twice today and seems to get better each time. I liked what the board read ''Welcome all Candidates'' when Jack went to see David perform. *Very appropriate*. Wasn't sure about the introduction of his son at first but it must have some importance. And that little talk he had at the end brought a tear to my eye

Did anyone else spot Jacob sprinkling something in the stream or was he just dangling his hand above the water?? but i'm sure it looked like he was putting something in there
