Don't worry gang, for this is the last time there will be an episode without Ben. But fans of the other regular characters will feel lonely with us this time, since the entire hour is devoted to a couple of guest stars. "Across the Sea" Written by Carlton Cuse & Damon Lindelof Directed by Tucker Gates
The motives of John Locke are finally explained.

Did anyone else see a bit of Ben in Jacob's resentment and jealousy over MIB? He might as well have yelled "What about me?!" in a few moments - I don't know if that makes it more sympathetic or unforgivable that he then made Ben feel the same way.

I don't even know what to say to this. Amazing, amazing, amazing! Brilliant episode. But is anyone else dying to know the MIB's name? I kept waiting for them to say it, but they never did. It is driving my a little crazy.

What an episode! Lost of answers, but unfortunately, I still have lots of questions and I doubt that I'll get the answers:
1. Why did he become the smoke monster? In other words, what is in the cave to create that?
2. Who built the 4-toed statue and why?
3. How did the fake mom get to the island? Who put her there?
4. Why is there a fertility problem on the island?

good episode, I enjoyed it a lot, especially to see Jacob behaving like a freakin' human for once (all the peace and tranquility around him were weird, now we finally got to see him grieving his brother/mother, feeling anger, violence and all those human feelings we normally have but Jacob seemed like he didn't) And funny how MIB became the smoke monster and we still don't know his name I think the mythology of the island is pretty much covered (even with ambiguous explanations like "it's the heart of the island" - referring to the light on that tunnel - is good enough for me, i don't need a scientific explanation of that), now all there's left to see is what will happen with the Island, the candidates and the people who somehow ended up in the middle of that (Ben and Alpert).

1. Why did he become the smoke monster? In other words, what is in the cave to create that?
2. Who built the 4-toed statue and why?
3. How did the fake mom get to the island? Who put her there?
4. Why is there a fertility problem on the island? My thoughts: re: Q1: I don't think he became the smoke monster. I think his entrance into the "the Light" allowed the smoke monster to be released or maybe even created it. The smoke monster has been famous in mimicking the dead. I think SM mimicking the twins' mother to the Boy in Black. That might have been the actual reason people were forbidden to go into the cave because of the problems a SM would cause.
re: Q2: My thoughts exactly, but then I suspect certain features of the island exist in certain time lines and not in others. How come no one saw the lighthouse until this season? That helps explain why we saw Jack shirtless in one flash forward when Jacob was putting fake mom and MiB to rest, and in the next, he has a shirt on.
re: Q3: I asked the same questions, but I suspect the answer doesn't really matter in the overall story. I think the key point is "the Light" has been conning people for millennia. On a metaphorical level, it represents enlightenment, and thus the darker forces don't want it released. This really does add or reinterpret the old story of the man against gods and the fight for knowledge or wisdom and to have power or at least self-determination.
re: Q4: Yeah, that's still an unanswered Q, but it sort of fits in with the whole scenario of people not being allowed to have any say over things. Certainly the power of reproduction is a huge step toward that. This ep is rich in detail and context, and I caught more on the second watch. Will be watching it again to see what else I missed.
