Misunderstood
Doctor Ashley Winchester sat on the couch in her house; a glass of wine in her hand and a sense of achievement filled her. She had done a successful appendectomy and saved the victims of a car crash. No one had died today, at least on her table. Some close calls; but no T.O.D.'s. Ashley was one of the best doctors at Saint Michael's; the best for her age and the youngest. She was well known and saved many lives. Her parents and brothers were proud. Ashley rinsed her glass and went to bed; quickly falling asleep. Little did she know that her life was about to change forever.
*~*~*
"Call for you Doctor Winchester." The young receptionist said with a smile; handing Ashley the phone. Ashley took the phone; confused.
"Who is it?" The girl shrugged.
"Some guy." Ashley furrowed her brow before putting the phone to her ear.
"Hello?" She asked.
"Hello Doctor Winchester, my name is Richard Alpert." The man known as Richard told Ashley that her expertise was needed for a few months on an island. He said that the inhabitants needed her and that everything would be paid for.
"I- uh .. are you serious?" She asked.
"Indeed Doctor." Ashley tapped her fingers on the wall beside her.
"I have to think about it of course."
"Of course." Her want to help others was a weakness; she was strongly considering it. But she wanted to talk to her family first. "When you decide go to 42 West Craven Road by three the day after next." With that they hung up. Ashley shook her head and started towards her current patient. The man almost sounded like he already knew what she'd do.
*~*~*
Ashley drove with trepidation towards the giant gate of 42 West Craven. There was a giant building that looked like a health clinic. Two men approached her driver's side; she stepped out.
"Welcome Doctor, I'm Richard Alpert." A tall man with tanned skin and short black hair said. Ashley shook his extended hand. "Did you bring your bag?"
"Oh yes." Ashley said as she opened her door and removed her small bag from the passenger's seat.
"Oh good. Now if you'll come with me..." Richard said as he placed a hand behind her and one in front; showing her where to go. She nodded; staring in awe at the huge building.
Once inside Richard gave her a slideshow of what to expect. She was excited to beable to help those who needed it. Ashley wished it wasn't for so long, and that she could contact her family, but she would learn to adapt. Finally Ashley was given a glass of what looked like orange juice. She looked at it in disgust; she hated orange juice.
"It's for the ride over .. trust me when I say you'll need it." Richard said sincerely; a small smile on his face. Ashley picked up the glass and quickly downed the entire thing. Richard was about to object but it was too late. She fell into darkness seconds later.
*~*~*
Ashley was woken suddenly when she felt someone touching her. Her eyes shot open as she took in a breath.
"Whoa, whoa Doctor it’s ok. We’re here.” The man said as he continued to unbuckle her. Ashley furrowed her brow.
“What do you mean? I was just-”
“You were given something so you’d sleep through the trip.” The man then walked away. Ashley, still slightly dazed, managed to get out of her top bunk and onto the boardwalk; going to her hands and knees. They had arrived by submarine. She stared in awe at the island, her new home; well at least for a few months. Suddenly a rather tall man with short and spiky brown hair and blue eyes helped her up.
“Hello Doctor, glad you could join us. My name is Benjamin Linus. Welcome to your new home.”
*~*~*
Ashley had been on the island for about two months and she had already saved countless lives. She was making a difference and she was happy. She had been living in the barracks; in one of the houses thanks to Ben. She had just made breakfast and was about to start a new book. Ashley looked up when she heard a knock at her door. She opened the door with a smile.
“Hey Ben.” Ashley said as she shielded her eyes from the sun with her hand.
“Hello Ashley. I just came by to ask you if you’d like to come to my house for a party tonight.”
“Umm .. yeah sure, sounds fun. Want me to bring anything?”
“Do you have a bottle of wine you could spare?” She looked into the slightly taller mans eyes.
“I think I could spare one.” She said with a smile. Ben smiled back; watching her.
“Great ... then it’s a date.” She nodded.
“Yup, it’s a date.”
*~*~*
Ashley looked in her mirror with a smile; turning to see each side. She was wearing a dark blue skirt that ended at her knees and a round cut short sleeve white shirt. It had designs in blue yarn up both sides; it was quite flattering. All her clothes were provided generously by Ben after she arrived.
Ashley arrived on Ben’s doorstep carrying a bottle of wine. Ben greeted her with a smile. He was wearing a multi-green vertically striped shirt and tan pants.
“You clean up nicely.” Ben said with a smile.
“Thanks Ben .. so do you.” Ashley said as she stepped inside. The usual warm and cozy place smelled of pasta puttanesca and fresh baked bread. There was a small rectangle shaped table set up with the dinnerware, two candles, and the bread in the middle. The pasta was still cooking on the stove nearby. On closer inspection Ashley found there was only two places set.
“Here, this should be chilled.” Ben said as he walked passed her and grabbed the bottle. He then placed it in a container filled with ice before he hurriedly went back to the kitchen. Ben looked back at Ashley as he stirred. “Is there something wrong?”
“No it’s just .. when someone says party, that usually means more than two people.” Ben stopped and quickly put the pasta in a bowl; placing it on the table.
“I didn’t know how else to tell you, I was unsure.”
“Ben it’s ok.” Ashley said with a slight laugh. “I don’t mind .. mm, smells good.” Ben smiled; he was trying so hard.
“Thank you .. shall we?” Ben asked as he pulled out her chair. Ashley nodded with a smile as she sat. He smiled as he sat at the chair beside her.
*~*~*
Once dinner was finished they sat on his couch; talking and laughing as they sipped glasses of wine. Ben sat facing her; one leg bent on the couch while the other swayed slightly off the side. His arm rested on the back, his hand inches from Ashley, while the other rested on his thigh; holding his glass. Ashley sat cross legged, facing Ben. She held her glass gingerly with both hands; the bottom of the glass sat on the cushion in front of her.
“So how do you like it here?” Ben asked as he brought the glass to his lips.
“It’s nice, I like it.”
“But?” Ben asked; hearing the doubt in her voice.
“But I miss my family Ben. I miss my house, my clothes, my food ... my bed.” His chest tightened; causing him to take in a breath suddenly, his head dropped. She noticed the changes and quickly continued. “It’s not that I’m ungrateful or anything, I’m thankful for everything you’ve done for me Ben. Trust me on that. It’s just that ...” Ashley licked her lips. “I miss what I used to have. It’s not like I had nothing to lose when I came here. Not being able to contact my family is killing me. I need to know they’re all ok.” Ben looked up and stared into her eyes. “You can understand that can’t you?” She reached out and touched the top of his hand. Ben’s gaze went to their hands on the couch. He turned his hand over under hers; gently grabbing her fingers and rubbing them with his thumb. He was relieved, and shocked, that she didn’t recoil from his touch.
“I never really had a family to begin with.” His eyes stayed on their hands as he spoke. “My mother died when I was born ... and my father beat the snot outta me. Mostly when he got drunk on my birthday ... the day my mother died.” Ben’s eyes dropped to his glass; hiding the tears that started to form.
“I’m so sorry Ben.” Ashley said with tears in her eyes.
“Don’t be... I’ve come to face the fact that I’m gonna be alone.” Ashley grabbed his glass and placed their glasses on the small table beside them. She then moved closer to him and placed her hands on the sides of his face; staring into his ocean blue eyes.
“You’re not gonna be alone anymore Ben ... I promise.” His brow furrowed.
“How can you promise me something like that?” She then leaned forward and kissed him on the lips; slow and gentle.
