He worked as an illustrator in NYC for magazines and the NY Times back when he still needed a day job. I would love to find any of his illustrations!!
I read that he drove his pick up truck all over the south during his journeyman actor days. I would love to find a pic of him in his pick up truck!!

Good thread. *nods*
I'd also love to see some of his illustrations. Been curious about that for some time now.

I think you speak for us all. I was wondering about that too. It freaks me out that he was able to make freelance illustration into his 'day job.' That's almost impossible to do with freelance writing, for example, and illustration sounds even harder, as far as paying the bills is concerned (not to mention your work ending up in the Boston Globe and the New York Times... What other amazing talents does he have, anyway?) Maybe he worked for a corporation or something.

I don't think it was his day job...it sounded like it was just a side thing.

I don't think it was his day job...it sounded like it was just a side thing. I thought so, but the stuff I read described it that way (as if it was his main line of work). He worked in retail, right? Anyway... I'd love to see pictures from when he was younger - not quite established in the acting world, maybe still in/fresh out of college. Think he still had the spiky hair?

I wonder what he looked like when he was a kid. do you think that he looked like he does now, but on a 7 year old's body? ROFL! No, but really, i would like to see some early pictures of him. And his illustrations. Hum.... I'm gonna look at his pictures some more!

You know some men are like wine -they just get better as they get older. Plus Michael has made some good fashion decisions namely his hair and glasses. Bet the wife had something to do with that. Jim Byrnes of Highlander fame had that same hair style.
I used to have a huge fan crush on Welsh actor Peter Wingfield who was Methos on Highlander. Went to a lot of conventions to see and meet him. In the beginning he was sort of freaked out by fandom. Someone had sneaked on set and left a knife with his wife's name on it in his trailer. Like Michael he was hired for few episodes and was suppose to lose his head by the end of the season (There can be only one!). Instead he became a cast regular the following season. Michael seems to be more accepting of fandom but then he is American and would understand it more. PW is a real gentleman too but his acting is no where near the quality of Michael's. I've never really noticed acting techniques until Lost.
Wonder how hard it was for him to switch from the stage to screen. On stage you have to be big but on the screen you have to be small. Tiny facial movements can make all the difference and he has certainly mastered that. You can easily tell which character he is playing just by looking at his face. Each character is unique. You would never mistake Zep for Hinkle or Ben. And none of them look like Emerson himself. So many actors just play themselves.
I tried spiking hubby's hair the other day. He hated it.

So many actors just play themselves. Maeve One of the most amazing things I find on him is how different he is from his characters. I mean, Henry (or Ben, at the moment I just know Henry) and his character in Saw, are quite creepy. But then, from the press photos and the videos I've seen of him, he looks like a happy and sweet person...
