I just watched John Malkowich's rendition of Of Mice and Men. I heard the character say those same lines that Ben recited in the "Every Man for Himself" episode. No one comes close to Michael Emerson's rendition.
Michael, you rock as an actor. (But we all know that here, anyway.)

I made mp3s of both renditions of the scene that Ben Linus recites to Sawyer: www.bhrescue.com/LJ/ME/of_mice_&_men.mp3 (This one is Michael Emerson's rendition.) www.bhrescue.com/LJ/ME/Ofmiceandmen_movie.mp3 (This one is Joe Morton's rendition.) Now, I am not saying that Joe is not a good actor, but Michael is by far the better actor. What do you think? Please be patient when listening to Joe Morton's mp3. I was not able to start recording at the exact part where the monologue begins, so bear with the few seconds of silence.

You´re absolutely right - Michael Emerson is the much better actor (god, how I love listening to that voice - right now I have the "Murder Mysteries" in my car ;D).

esbaker, Thank you so much for the mp3 of our Michael quoting from 'Of Mice and Men'. When he was saying those lines to Sawyer, I was getting all choked up.
Isolation is the curse of humankind. We're all stuck in our heads in the first-person world of consciousness. We spend our whole lives longing to connect with something, someone outside ourselves.
I suspect Ben and Sawyer have more in common than they realize. Sawyer is always pushing people away, trying to convince them that he's unworthy. Ben is a leader. He can't afford the time or the vulnerablility when it comes to getting close with people.
(That's why I was so moved by his asking for Alex in the OR. Knowing that he cares for someone makes him so much more human and fragile.)
Thanks

Oh, you are quite welcome. I was so choked up when Ben asked about Alex. He looked so vulnerable and lonely. I wanted to hug him and say everything will be OK.
(I doubt that I would feel any empathy for a leader who is so ruthless with the people I so care about (the LOSTIEs) had it not been for Michael's acting ability.)

This is fairly off topic but I thought I'd tell you all, anyway.
I work at Chapters (I stalk the shelves mostly) and today I did the fiction section and stalked Of Mice and Men three times and Dostoyevsky a couple of times as well. And I said without really thinking about it "This is the book HENRY reads in lost!" and three of my co-workers are like...I LOVE lost!
it was a lost bonding moment. ;D

My best friend watches Lost, she at first didn't like Michael, but I'm turning her into a hardcore fan!

He´s mostly in part one and four (beware - ... I blushed when I first listened to part 1 ), short sentences in the other two parts. But the story is enthralling, I loved every part of it
