The next morning after taking a shower Mel went into the guest room where some of her things were. Ben had been nice enough to bring them over from Ethan's house.
She got dressed and was about to go into the kitchen when she noticed a piece of paper sticking out from under the pillow on the bed. She pulled it out to see what it was.
Mel crumpled the paper in her hand after reading it. She knew something was up with Zoe. Now it seemed like she was getting a chance to find out and find out more about Ethan as well.
Mel all but ran into the kitchen. She knew that she needed to leave right now. She heard the water running in the bathroom where Ben was taking a shower. She looked guiltily from the front door to the door he was behind.
She couldn't leave again without telling him. He would come into the jungle after her.
Even though she wasn't supposed to tell him anything about the letter she grabbed a spare piece of paper and scribbled out a note.
It read,
Ben,
I'll be back soon, I promise. Don't come after me.
Trust me, please.
Mel
She set the note on the kitchen table whee she knew he would find it easily. She turned for the door but as an after thought went to the bottom drawer of Ben's desk where he kept a spare gun. She tucked it into the back of her jeans and pulled her shirt over it so it was hidden.
With one last look at the house she left and made her way into the jungle.

Zoe waited for a long time, but refused to leave her spot, she had no idea when Mel would find the letter, it was so unpredicatable, but the only way to do this without involving anyone else.
Zoe heard movement. And there was Mel. She had successfully found the marked trees, Zoe didn't sigh with relief just yet. She moved from her hiding place and did a survey around Mel and the surrounds area to make sure no-one was around. She then showed herself, and came out into the clearing in front of Mel.
"Hi Mel." Zoe greeted, with seriousness in her tone. "I'm pleased you did as I asked. Cause if Ben found out the truth, it would only get more people hurt." Mel nodded.
"What about Ethan? What happened? How could you kill him?" Mel asked. Zoe looked away from her for a moment.
"I wish Ben didn't tell you he was dead. He's only put you through uneccessary grief. I hoped he would have kept it a mystery." Zoe replied. "I apologise." She then looked up at Mel.
"Ben wanted Ethan dead, anyone could see that, especially you, since you defended him and took the bullet. There was more hope for Ben when you had lost your memories. It was only a matter of time before he went and murdered him. As much as I despise Ethan, I couldn't let Ben do it. So I volunteered. I told Ben I would do it, that it should be me, just like John having to kill his dad. This convinced Ben, and all was going to plan." Zoe began to explain.
"While you were with Ben, recovering, I lured Ethan into the jungle, and wrongly gave him false hope into thinking we could have the father - daughter relationship he wanted. But it was the only way to get him into the jungle alone without him suspecting anything."
"When I was sure that we were out of hearing distance, I shot him." Zoe admitted, avoiding Mel's gaze. "I shot him in the stomach, which yes, would normally kill anyone. But I noticed something. John and myself had been shot in the same places, and we are still alive. You know what this island is like. With healing powers. I knew he would survive."
"I left him alone, but I didn't go far. I remained hidden and kept watch of him to make sure he survived and he fulfilled his promise that he would run, that he would do as I asked. And he did. Mel, Ethan is alive, but we have to make sure Ben thinks otherwise, or a lot of people are going to get hurt, you understand?" Zoe finished. "And that means you can't go looking for him. You'll have to hope some day, when you're out in the jungle, without Ben, that Ethan will approach you, which I am certain he will do when that time comes."
"So I gave Ethan a warning. I told him once he was healed, he could never come back to the village. I told him to run. Find somewhere safe for him, because if he came back to the village, Ben would make sure that he was dead, and would make me suffer, and possible my kids too. I couldn't let that happen, and I know Ethan couldn't. I know he couldn't hurt you too. He had no choice. He had to do what I told him.

Mel finished listening to Zoe's explanation.
"How could you shoot your own father? Even if you thought that he had a chance to survive you still could have killed him. That was too big of a risk to take."
"But he's not dead Mel. I did what needed to be done." Zoe said firmly.
"What you need to do, Zoe, is take care of your children. If you're so adament about Ethan not being in your life, then leave him alone."
"I can't believe you're reacting like this. I just told you that I saved the man you love and you're still blaming me!"
"I blame you for letting Ben's influence sway your mind. You say you did this for Ben, but I think you did it a little for yourself too."
"Are you seriously accusing me and being controlled by Ben? Have you stopped and looked at yourself lately? You don't do a thing without checking with Ben first. Ben is the one who gave the order to kill Ethan! Yet, you still are sleeping in his house." Zoe argued and gave Mel a look that said she thought she was doing far more than just sleeping in the same house as Ben.
Mel took a deep breath to hold herself back from yelling more. "Listen, I'm happy that Ethan is alive. I am. But I'm more relieved that you told me you didn't kill him. Because if you had, things would have gone differently today."
"Meaning?" Zoe asked.
"If you had told me that you killed Ethan, I would of had to kill you." Mel said as she turned abck the way she had come.
"Mel." Zoe started.
"Don't worry. I won't tell Ben anything. It's best for him if he continues to believe that Ethan is truly dead."
"You can't just walk away from this." Zoe called to Mel's back.
Mel stopped but didn't turn around, "You just said that I can't go looking for Ethan. That is is possible I will never see him again. So, walking away is exactley what I am going to do."

Zoe sighed, she knew something like this would happen, and like previously thought, felt worse for having to tell the truth, but she knew it was better this way before whoever had been intending to blackmail her to tell Mel that she had killed him. She wasn't suprised either that Mel had told her she would have killed her if she had actually killed him. If it were her, she may have done the same.
Which perhaps may not be completly true. But she knew she had done the right thing now, but the familar feeling of having heavy weight lifeted off her shoulders did not sercome. Locke appeared behind her. Zoe turned to face him.
"It didn't go well then." John commented. Zoe shook her head.
"She is right though, I did do it a little for myself. I did to start with, intend to kill him." Zoe explained.
"But you didn't." Locke pointed out. Zoe sighed again and sat down on a rock.
"You didn't kill him because you're not a killer." Locke continued. Zoe looked up at him.
"That's not true - I've killed-"
"In self defense. That's different." Locke interrupted. "Not only that, because despite however much you hate your father, you still have a connection with him, and he will never stop being your father, nothing in the world can change that."
"You killed your father." Zoe replied.
"Thats because I'm different to you. I killed him because it was the only way to set me free. Besides, technically, I didn't kill him. Sawyer did." Locke admitted.
"Oh." Zoe replied unfazed. She turned to look in the direction Mel had left in. "She isn't ever going to forgive me is she?"
"I don't know. People are unpredictable in these circumstances. Give it time." Locke replied.
"I don't blame her if she doesn't, but I it doesn't mean I don't justify my reasons. You know, Ethan almost made me the responsible one for Charlie's death. I could never forgive him for that. Then there is what Ben told me. I couldn't let it go. That makes me weak, doesn't it?"
"It would have made you weak if you did kill him." Locke replied.

Mel hurried through the jungle and made it back to to village by nightfall. When she opened the front door to Ben's house she found him sitting on the couch. He stood and came over to her when he saw her.
"Are you okay?" he asked worriedly.
She smiled, "I'm fine. You saw my note right?"
"Yes. I was halfway out the door when I saw, 'Trust me'. are you going to tell me what happened?"
Mel led Ben to the couch and sat down. "Zoe wanted to talk to me."
"And?" Ben pushed.
"She told me that she is the one who killed Ethan."
"Mel, I'm sorry. I didn't know if I should tell you or not."
"It's fine." Mel said.
"What did you say to her?" Ben asked.
"I'm sure you can imagine. I told her I couldn't believe she killed her father, which I still can't."
"Then you just walked away?"
"Yes," Mel nodded. "But not before I warned her."
"Of what?"
Mel took the gun from her jeans and set it ont he table in front of them. "I told her if I ever saw her again that I would kill her." Mel looked up into Ben's eyes. "I meant it."
"I believe you." Ben said as his glance slid to the gun.
Mel stood up and went into the kitchen. "Do you remember the other day when we were talking, you said that there might be somewhere on the island that I could go? Where no one else is?"
"Yes." Ben answered as he placed the gun back in his desk drawer and joined her in the kitchen.
"I want to go. As soon as I can."
"Mel, I don't even know if it is possible."
"Ben, is there a place or isn't there?"
Ben sighed, Mel could tell he didn't want to answer her. "Yes, there is a place."
Mel's face brightened but she noticed Ben's fall. "Listen," she said placing her hand on his arm, "I know you don't want me to go. But it's for the best. You know that."
Ben nodded.
"Besides, you can always come visit me when you need a break from the baby keeping you up all night." she joked.
Ben smiled, "Since this is something that you really want, I'll do this for you."
Mel hugged him, "Thank you! When can I leave?"
"I'll take you myself, at the end of the week. But until then, no more running off into the jungle without me."
Mel nodded, "I promise."

"Come, I haven't finished with you yet." Locke said to Zoe finally as she had remained where she was for a fair while, saying nothing. She looked up at him.
"What do you mean?" She asked.
"I mean there is still much to teach you." Locke replied with a hidden smile.
"You make a habit of having little apprentices, don't you? Are you sure you're a hunter, and not a teacher?" Zoe asked with a raised eyebrow, but she was grinning as well. Locke didn't reply, but his secret smile remained. He started to walk through the jungle, and Zoe followed.

Two days later Mel fastened up her pack as Ben came out of his room.
"Are you ready?" he asked.
Mel looked at him and smiled, "Yes. Let's go."

She had avoided Ben and mainly stayed around in the house. John and Zoe would come and go. She hadn't even seen Richard for days.

Mel and Ben walked into the courtyard where they were met by Jack.
"You really leaving?" he asked Mel.
"Yes," she nodded. "I'm really leaving."
"Well, I don't like it but stay safe."
Mel smiled,"I'll try my best. Thank you Jack for helping save my life."
"You're welcome." Jack smiled back.
"We should get going." Ben said placing his hand on Mel's back and guiding her towards the jungle.
"To a new start." Mel said as they left the village.

Zoe and Locke walked back to the village, Zoe thinking it might be safer now, having given Mel the time to cool down and think over what had hppened and what they had done.
Zoe hadn't walked very far into the village when Ben came out his house to meet her.
"We need a word." He said darkly.
"What's wrong?" Zoe asked curiously and confused.
"One of my most loyal people went missing. Well, when I say missing, I say murdered." Ben stared to raise his voice. "He was shot, when the dharma people were here at war with us, only it wasn't them who shot him was it?"
At the sound of Ben's shouts, people came out their houses to see what the commotion was about.
"What are you talking about-" Zoe started.
"Don't pretend like you don't know what happened!" Ben was really shouting now, and how he was looking at Zoe scared her a little. "You killed Mikhail. I know you did."
"He killed Charlie!" Zoe screamed at him. "I believe they were orders you gave! How can you blame me?" Ben stared at her momentarily, the angriest she had ever seen him.
"GO!" He roared finally. "You're banished."
