Lauren stood and watched bitterly as Mel left safely with the stranger who had rescued her, and turned to face her situation. Cameron looked furious as he glared at her in disgust, clutching his shoulder.
“Come on men” he ordered, “let’s go back home and leave this bitch with her new friends”, and with that he spat in Lauren’s direction and they all marched off back towards the beach leaving Lauren standing there shaking, watching them gradually fade into the distance.
She waited until they had disappeared completely and then let out a moan as her legs collapsed underneath her, and she fell back against a tree gasping for air through her sobs. She had never felt so frightened and alone before in her life.
She sat motionless and silent, frozen in fear and shock. She remained in this trance for the next few hours, until the torrential rain brought her back around.
She looked around her, and seeing the floor turning into a stream, she stumbled to her feet, glancing around her wildly. She remembered seeing Mel's slight nod towards the village, and came to the realisation that she only really did have one option. She sighed and started to walk.
“Lauren! Wait!” She heard someone calling her name, and took a deep breath and slowly turned round to see who the voice belonged to.
“John” she gasped, as he walked towards her, looking concerned.
“What are you doing out here Lauren? Where is everyone? Why are you alone?”
She looked into his gentle eyes and burst into tears again. “Hey… hey… what’s wrong? Come here”, he whispered as he took her into his arms and pulled her close. “Tell me what happened..”
She looked up into his eyes and told him of how she had gone against her own men and how they had left the island without her.
“I don’t know what to do John” she sobbed, “I couldn’t kill her, I couldn’t. I couldn’t…” she trailed off pulling herself even closer against his chest, gripping him tightly.
He slowly stroked her hair reassuringly, “Come on, I’ll take you back to the village, you’ll be safe with me.” He took her face into his hands and looked into her eyes, “I promise” he whispered, before kissing her on her forehead.
He gently put his arm around her shoulders and she clutched tightly onto his shirt as he carefully guided her along the slippery track.

Zoe hadn't managed to get very far when she ran to the sound of her babies crying - crying for their parent. Juliet jumped on her and tackled her to the ground. She took a shocker out of her belt and held it to Zoe's neck.
"Do you really want me to use this? Because I will if I have to." Juliet said to her camly.
"No. I suppose not." Zoe gave in, and stopped struggling. Juliet got off of her and helped her up.
"Look, I understand you pediciment, but charging in and taking them isn't going to make the situation any better. In fact, it would make things a hell of a lot worse. Ever since Ben failed with Alex, he has been trying his best with your kids. He treats them as if they were his own. Like they were truly Molly and Bella's real brother and sister." Juliet explained. "These are dangerous circumstances Zoe, and not to be taken lightly."
"Can you blame me?" Zoe replied hysterically. "They are my flesh and blood! They are all that connect me with Charlie! I can't loost them Juliet, I just can't!" Zoe replied, breaking down into tears as she paced the room before slumping down on the sofa, sobbing into her arms.
Juliet sat beside her and patted her sympathetically on the back.
"Maybe when Ben comes back over here we can arrange something. Reneogiate the situation." Juliet said to her reassuringly. "He may be difficult, but he isn't heatless. He can just be - a bit reckless with his decisions and ideas."

Emma awoke suddenly in the early morning to find the cold metal of a gun barrel pressed against her cheek, held by one of Cameron's men. Next to her, a second crew member held a gun to Jack's cheek.
"Honeymoon's over, Jack." growled the second man. "We've come for the Oceanic survivors, and we're not leaving this island until we have them in our boat."
Jack's eyes flew open at these words and his mind raced furiously to get them out of this situation. "How did you find us, and why do you think I can help you?" he demanded angrily. Emma remained silent, her fear taking over.
Cameron's man laughed. "We followed you, Jack. You're not quite as good at melting into the jungle as you think you are. I believe you can persuade your people in the village to leave the island with us. In fact, you don't have any choice. Now get up."
The man holding a gun to Emma grabbed her roughly and stood her on her feet, binding her hands tightly with rope. The second man did the same to Jack.
"Now take us back to your village. You'll persuade your people to come with us, otherwise it's goodnight to you and your new girlfriend." The men held their guns to Jack and Emma's backs and prodded them out of the beach shelter. Outside, two more men waited with their guns ready, in case they tried to escape. Emma made it only two steps before she fainted to the ground.

Sophie sighed as she stood on the outskirts of the village. "Look were back home Mols" as she held and then grabbed her stuff.
She knocked on Bens door and waited for him to answer. Pulling the door open, he was surprise to see her there. Smiled to her and helped get her things. "I was then coming to see you."
"Well i saved you the trip" Sophie replied.

Emma woke up to Cameron's man slapping her face.
"If you hurt her I will kill you," Jack roared. "In fact, there's no reason to take her at all. The others don't know her or care about her. She's useless to you as a bargaining tool."
Cameron's man smiled. "Except you care about her, Jack, and that makes her very useful." He pushed Emma forward. "Now walk."
Jack and Emma walked in a single file towards the village with guns at their backs. Once, Emma turned to look at Jack behind her for reassurance and the man walking with her hit her on the face with his gun, leaving a bloody gash on her forehead.
"You shouldn't have done that," Jack growled.

Mel and Desmond made it back to the village just in time to see Sophie entering Ben's house.
Mel shook her head, she should have known he would go off to Sophie and leave Mel to be killed.
"Des, you should go to my house. I don't know how Ben is going to react once he sees you are out of the Orchid."
"I don't want you to see him alone Mel."
"I'm not going to." Mel promised. "I'm going to get Bella. I'm sure Juliet is watching her."
Desmond nodded, "Alright, I'll meet you at your house."
"Thank Des." Mel said as she went quickly to Juliet's and knocked on the door.
A tearful Juliet answered.
"I see he told you then." Mel said referring to Jack.
"You knew?"
"Only just. I'm sorry Jules. I don't know what got in to him."
"It's that girl, Emma. I helped her! And this is how she repays me."
Mel smiled, "Look at it this way. Maybe this will work out for the better. I've seen Sayid eyeing you constantly." Mel teased trying to make Juliet feel better.
Juliet smiled in spite of herself, "I thought you were dead. I saw them take you away."
"I should be, but someone came to my rescue."
"Who?"
"Desmond Hume."
Juliet's eyes got wide, "Ben's not going to like that."
"I know it. That is why I'm not going to tell him just yet. Besides, he's having a nice reunion with Sophie." Mel scoffed.
Juliet looked down, "He went to her, right after they took you."
"That's what I figured. I'm fine with him wanting to be with her instead of me. I just wish that he would stop kissing me and claiming he loves me. He knows I'm powerless against him. It's so confusing."
"That is why he keeps coming back to you Mel. He knows he can control you."
"Much to my regret. Anyway, enough about Ben. Where is Bella? I'd like to take her home."
Juliet was quiet for a while before answering, "He has her."
"What?"
"Ben has Bella. He said that he would be raising her full time now since you were gone. Him and Sophie."
Mel felt her face flush with anger, "He wants that woman to raise my daughter?"
"I'm afraid so."
"That bastard." Mel seethed. "How dare he? He knows how much that would hurt me."
"He thinks that you are dead."
"If it had been left up to him I would be!"
"What are you going to do?"
Mel stared at Ben's house, "I'm going to get my daughter back and then, I'm getting the hell off of this island."

Sophie had unpacked her things. She was home again, although her and Ben relationship was a little awkward. Ben was trying with her but Sophie was being cautious this time. "So where is Mel?" Sophie asked. as she sat down in one of the arm chairs.
"I told you shes gone."
"She wouldn't just leave her daughter Ben!"
"She's dead! Shes dead ok!" Ben snapped making Sophie jump. "I'm sorry, i didn't mean to raise my voice."
"I'm sorry too." sophie responded.
Just then Mel burst into the house.

Jack and Emma's captors prodded them past the pylons and into the center of the village, where they were blindfolded and forced to kneel on the ground. One of Cameron's men shot his gun into the air to capture the attention of the village's inhabitants. People swarmed out of their houses to see what this latest drama was all about.
"We've come for the Oceanic 815 survivors," he yelled to the village at large. "You have one hour to gather your belongings before joining us for the hike back to our boat. We're taking you off this island. If every survivor is not accounted for at that time, your leader and his girl will not live to see sunset tonight. We came in peace, but you took our men, and now we're plenty angry about it." He shot his gun a second time for emphasis.
Emma began to sob quietly. "Jack," she whispered, hoping desperately that he was close enough to hear her. "What are we going to do?"

"Where is she?" Mel said going straight for Ben and ignoring Sophie.
"Mel." Ben said, shocked. "You're alive."
Mel stopped in front of Ben, only inches from his face. "The last time I saw you, you said that you would find a way to save me. Instead you left me to die and went to her!" she cried pointing at Sophie.
"I'm done Ben."
"Done with what?" he asked, still in wonder that she was alive.
"I'm done with you. I won't play this game with you any longer. Now where is Bella?"
When Mel spoke of their daughter Ben focused, "She is safe. Here, where she belongs."
"Did you really think I was going to just let you have her? That I would let Sophie raise her?"
"You were dead." Ben argued.
"No! You watched them carry me off. You knew where they would be going. You could have easily helped me. But you did nothing. Despite you, I am still alive. And I am here for my daughter."
Just then, they all heard a gunshot outside, followed closely by another.
Ben made to move towards the front door but Mel stopped him.
"I'm going to take Bella." she told him.
Ben looked down at her and saw how serious she was. "I'm her father."
"That may be, but Sophie is not her mother. I am."
Ben looked at Sophie and then back to Mel, "You can take her to your house. I'll be by later to discuss this further." Then he was out the door.
Mel walked down the hallway and into the nursery. She found Bella sleeping peacefully. She picked her up and carried her into the living room. Sophie was still standing where she had been when she first entered the house.
"This is it Sophie. You've won. I won't ever challenge you for Ben again."
"What do you mean?" Sophie asked.
Mel ignored her question, "Just be careful. The first wrong move you make. He'll take Molly away from you. No matter how many times he tells you he won't. He is still Ben and he doesn't change. Goodbye Sophie."
Mel walked out of the house and didn't look back. She walked straight across the courtyard where she saw Cameron and his men holding Jack and Emma hostage. She could hear Cameron barking orders for the survivors to pack their things.
"Cameron?" she called to him.
Everyone turned and looked at her.
Ben tried to step in her way to hiss, "What are you doing?", but she just walked around him.
"You have a lot of nerve little lady." Cameron said as she approached him.
Mel smirked, "So I've been told."
"What do you want? I'm curious to know before I shoot you."
"I'll help you." she said simply.
"Help me with what?"
"The survivors. I'll get them to your boat, convince them to leave with you."
"How are you going to do that?"
"I can be awfully persuasive when I need to be."
"What's the catch?" Cameron asked, right to be suspicious.
Mel took another step forward, "If I help you, you take me with you."
Mel looked back at Ben who had shock written clearly across his face.
Mel took a deep breath and looked back to Cameron, "I want you to get me off of this island."

Zoe sat paiently on the sofa when she heard the door knock, and Juliet answer it. She could tell from the conversation she was talking to Mel. Not wanting to face her father's killer, Zoe didn't make any movement to go see her and stayed where she was.
Once Mel had left, Juliet returned to her side.
"It appears Ben is back in the village, so it won't be long now until you can -" BANG BANG, two gun shots went off in the village. Juliet and Zoe ran out of the house onto the fresh green of the village. It was Camron. Zoe felt a cold frozen chill run down her spine. She seized Juliet's hand and squeezed it for comfort as she was sore afraid of that man.
Zoe watched the chaos as Ben ran out his house, shortly followed by Mel who strided across the village towards Mel, begining a speach of how she would help the survivors of flight 815 be persuaded to get on the boat and be returned home.
Zoe frowned a little. She was confused to why this much fuss was being made. The survivors she knew were desperate to leave the island. Why was it taking threatening Jack and Emma's life to get them to leave now?
Zoe thought Mel was crazy to entrust her life and her daughters to go with Camron, but Zoe didn't hesiate to go help. She just watched and waited for the scene to unfold, frozen on the spot. She wanted nothing more then to be one of those people getting on that boat, with her children. Not believing she was admitting this though, she trusted Ben more with her life then Camron's.
Zoe noticed Jack was on the ground, blindfolded, hands binded behind his back. Zoe called out to him.
"JACK!" She shouted, turning her back to Camron so she could ignore his reaction. "MICHAEL IS ON THE BOAT."

The walk back was long and tiring, and Lauren’s feet were exhausted from trying to keep up with John’s. “You ok?” he whispered in her ear, “you need a break or anything?”, Lauren held her aching side and nodded in response, finding a dry rock to sit on, and motioning for John to join her.
“Would you like some water?” he asked, offering it to her. She eagerly accepted the bottle and gulped it down in seconds, panting, out of breath afterwards. John looked over smiling affectionately as he watched her.
She sighed and leaned back, trying to digest everything that had happened today. She needed to formulate a plan of some sort, but she found herself unable to take her mind off John for long enough to concentrate. She had only known him for a few hours but she had fallen for him badly. She felt his eyes on her, and pretended not to notice, and raised her hand to her forehead to hide her blushing.
John slowly took her hand in his and lowered it down to her side, gazing intently into her eyes. Lauren felt a nervous wave of anticipation wash over her as he raised his hand to her cheek and slowly moved towards her, pressing his lips against hers in a tender, sensual kiss. She pulled herself closer to him and put her arms around his neck, feeling the heat of his skin as she pressed herself against him, never wanting this moment to come to an end.
A gunshot echoed around them, making them jump and pull away from each other quickly. John got out his knife and looked around. “It sounds like it came from the village. We’re about five minutes away. Come on.”
“John, are you sure we should go there?”, Lauren asked worriedly.
He turned round and softly kissed her on the lips. “Yes, I’m sure. Don’t worry, I won’t let anything happen to you”
He squeezed her hand and they quickly crept through the trees towards the disturbance.
Even though this was the worst day of Lauren’s life, it had somehow become one of the best, and as she looked towards John, she couldn’t stop the grin from spreading across her face.

It took Jack a moment to register Zoe's words. Michael was on the boat - why on earth would Michael return for them? What was his purpose? This certainly wasn't a rescue mission. There was something more to it, some sinister purpose they had yet to discover. Maybe Lauren had some answers - she seemed to have switched sides now, and could be a valuable ally.
He felt their best chances for survival lay in stalling for time from their captors. With all the people and weapons in the village, something would happen. Ben, Locke, or Mel, maybe even Desmond, would know exactly what needed to be done. He had to trust that. His only thoughts were of saving Emma's life, and in order to do that there would probably have to be more bloodshed.
"You know, you can't force anyone to leave this island," Jack spoke to his captor. "You have to give people a choice. There are some that will go with you willingly, and there are some that will stay. It's not up to you."
"I'm just following orders, Jack. I'm taking ALL the survivors."
"And who gives your orders?" asked Jack. He got no response. "Violence and intimidation - do you think that's going to work?"
"Shut up. You talk too much." Emma shrieked as her captor yanked her hair roughly to emphasize his point. Jack wisely shut his mouth. With the blindfold on, he had no idea what was going on in the village around him. He could only hope, desperately, that someone would make a move to end this bizarre standoff.

Mel ignored everyone's shock and moved close to Cameron so only he could hear her.
"Do we have a deal?" she asked.
"What are you playing at?" he said.
"Nothing. I just want to get my daughter and myself off of this island."
Cameron didn't want to trust her but he went against his instincts. If she could convince him of all people to go along with this she shouldn't have any trouble with the survivors.
"Aye." he answered. "We have a deal."
"Good." Mel nodded. "Now untie Jack. I'm going to need him."
"What about the girl?" Cameron wondered.
Mel shrugged, "Do what you like. I don't need her."
Cameron laughed, "I think we'll keep her tied up, just to make sure the doc stays in line."
Mel left Cameron to it and walked away. Ben came to her side instantly and grabbed her arm.
"What the hell do you think you are doing?" he seethed.
Mel looked up into his eyes, not afraid. "I told you I was done."
"And that is supposed to translate to you leaving the island?"
"You expect me to stay here forever while you flaunt your relationship with Sophie in front of me? Tell me the truth Ben, would it really hurt you so much if I was truly gone?"
"You know it would." Ben answered immediatley.
"The more you say it, the less I believe it." Mel said as she walked away from him.
He caught up with her again. "You can't leave. You can't take Bella. I'm her father."
"And I am her mother! Who do you think she needs more? I seem to remember that our son was taken away not because of me but because of the danger you represented to him. I think she will be safer without you in her life."
"You really blame me for William?" Ben asked quietly.
"I think that Ethan really did think he was doing the right thing by taking him away from your influence. Do, I think he was right in taking him away from his parents? No. The blame lies with both of you."
"Mel."
"Have you forgotten our son so easily Ben? I haven't, I still think about him, cry for him, every day. But I haven't given up hope that I will see him again."
"It's not possible. I wish it was Mel. If I knew where he was I would find him and bring him back to you in a second."
"I know." Mel admitted. "But you don't know where he is. But I know who he is with."
Ben stared off into space for a moment as he thought back to the day his son was kidnapped. Suddenly, it came back to him.
"You mean Christian."
"Yes. Christian Shepard. He is the one who has William. And now I have access to a boat, which can get me closer to him and I have someone who can find him."
"Who?"
"His son of course." Mel said motioning to Jack. "Though he doesn't know he's still alive yet."
"So you're not leaving because of me. You're leaving to rescue William."
Mel shook her head, "I'm leaving because of you. Because I can't continue to share you when I know you keep stringing me along because we have children together and because you want someone to do your bidding."
"Mel." Ben said taking her hand and gazing down at Bella who still slept in her arms. He couldn't find the right words to continue.
"And once I find our son." Mel sighed sadly, sliding her finger under Ben's chin and lifting his eyes to hers, "I'll be coming back here because of you."

Emma heard Mel's words, and they terrified her. "Jack," she cried. "Don't leave me here!"
"I don't know what Mel is getting at, but I'm not leaving you, Emma. I promise." Jack responded. His captor removed Jack's blindfold in preparation for his release.
Emma felt a sharp kick to her ribs and winced. "Shut up!" growled her captor.
Jack suddenly snapped. "I told you not to hurt her!" he roared and charged, headfirst, into the stomach of the man holding Emma. The man fell over backward. A sudden chaotic exchange of gunfire erupted between Cameron's men and the villagers. Emma felt a bullet pierce the muscle in her left leg, and fell to the ground. Strong hands grabbed her by the shoulders and dragged her a safe distance away from the boaties. The same hands gently removed her blindfold. She looked up and found Desmond's eyes on hers. "You'll be all right now, Emma." he whispered.
"Des, save Jack, please..." Emma promptly passed out from the pain in her leg.

"I can't let you take Bella off of the island. She is my daughter." Ben told Mel.
Mel looked up at Ben, "Is she?" she challenged.
They both turned when they heard another gun go off. Mel rolled her eyes when she saw Jack fighting with Cameron. She handed Bella carefully to Ben before going over to them.
"Jack!" she yelled but he either didn't hear her or ignored her.
Mel noticed that Emma was gone, but saw the trail of blood that led into the jungle.
Jack continued to struggle with Cameron.
"I'm sorry for this Jack." she said loudly as she picked Cameron's gun up from the ground. She hit Jack swiftly in the back of the head with the butt of the gun.
Jack staggered for a moment before falling to the ground, unconscious.
"You really should stop threatening Emma. It will only make him angry." she said to Cameron as she helped him off of the ground.
She turned to the large crowd, most of them survivors.
"This is what you have all been waiting for! These men are here to rescue you. Why are we attacking them?"
Mel saw the survivors start to look to one another nodding their heads.
"This is the only rescue that you're going to get. These men will take you off of this island and back home, I promise you that." Mel looked right at Ben who held Bella in his arms. "You all get to go home."
