Mel and Ben treked through the jungle with their captives between them. Mel's mind scrambled for a plan since it seemed like Ben wasn't going to be any help. She knew they couldn't take them to the village. The plane survivors would want to find out what they knew, if they were really here to rescue them.
'It would be much easier if everyone would accept the fact that they aren't going to leave the island.' Mel thought to herself.
She heard a scuffle behind her and turned to see one of the men pull the ropes from his arms and run off into the jungle. She looked at Ben and motioned for him to shoot the man since he was closer
Ben just looked back at Mel, challenging her.
"Damn." Mel said under her breath as she raised her gun. The man was pretty far away but she could see him well enough to aim. Mel pulled the trigger and the man stopped in his tracks. He teetered for a moment before falling to the ground.
"No!" Lauren yelled. Obviously she had woken up in the past few moments. "Why did you do that?"
Mel wanted to scream at her that she was being forced. That Ben was punishing her in his own little sick way. But she didn't, "I warned you all what would happen if you ran. Now you know I wasn't bluffing."
"Is he dead?" she asked.
"It looks like it." Mel forced coldly as she sent horrible thoughts to Ben. He was a bastard to be putting her through this.
"Listen." she said to everyone. "Just do as I say and no one else will get hurt. Now, let's go."

Emma and Jack made their way back to the village. She was giddy with delight. It had been so long since she felt desire! In the back of her mind she also felt guilty, as though she were betraying Desmond. But he had been disloyal to her when he fell for Mel, she reminded herself. Emma felt entitled to some masculine attention, and Jack was everything she had hoped for. It was certainly unexpected, but very, very nice.
They reached the village. "You'd better wait here, in case Ben is around." Jack spoke in a low voice.
"What if you run into Juliet?" Emma asked. She knew Juliet had a habit of being a little too nosy, and would wonder where Jack had disappeared to overnight.
"I'll deal with it, if it happens. I'm not worried. I'll make sure Ben isn't home first, and go for the briefcase. Wait for me here."
Emma nodded. "I'm grateful for you, Jack."
Jack grinned. "And I'm grateful for you." Jack kissed her tenderly and stepped into the village grounds.
****
Emma had only been waiting 45 minutes or so when Jack returned with the silver briefcase in hand. She felt both relieved and frightened, unsure of what the contents would reveal.
"I didn't have any trouble, for once." Jack told her. "I ran into Sayid. He thinks Ben went to investigate the boat situation. He hasn't been seen in the village for some time, so the coast was clear. I was able to avoid Juliet as well. Sayid promised to deflect her questions. He also offered to come with us to find Desmond; he'll meet us here shortly."
Emma felt her attraction to Jack intensify with every moment. "Why are you doing this, Jack? You hardly know me at all, but you've gone out of your way to defy Ben for me."
Jack nodded. "Ben doesn't have power over everybody in this village, Emma. I'm my own person."
Emma smiled. "I hope I'm worth all this trouble." Jack responded by kissing her.
"Now, let's see what kind of secrets Ben has been keeping in here."

"I'd like to to put your hands up Mel." she heard the voice before she saw the man it belonged to. She didn't need to see his face to know who it was. Sure enough, John Locke stepped out of the bushes.
"What do you want John?" she asked him.
He smiled at her, "I want you to put your hands in the air, far away from the gun tucked into your jeans." Locke turned to Ben, "Hello Benjamin."
Ben didn't answer, he just stared back.
Mel raised her hands as he asked while keeping an eye on the prisoners.
"This is not your fight John." she warned.
John withdrew a knife from his belt. "Nevertheless, I'm here. Why don't you tell me why these people are tied up?"
"You know why John. I would think that you of all people here would understand."
John smiled again and Mel was unnerved by his pleasant attitude. "What I understand is that you are going to untie them and let them go."
"I won't." Mel claimed.
Ben moved closer to Mel. "You'd better listen to her John. She's already killed one of them."
Mel reeled on Ben, "Is that really necessary?"
Ben smirked back at her and leaned close to whisper to her. "You're going to do what needs to be done. What I want you to do."
Mel's face paled at the thought, there was only one way Ben would see to fix the threat of this boat for good. And he was going to get her to do it without John being any wiser.
"Don't even think about it Mel. I can throw this knife faster than you can reach for your gun."
Mel raised an eyebrow at Ben, "Do something."
"What would you have me do? Protect you?" he grinned evily.
"I see, this is more of your punishment isn't it?" Mel said ignoring the captives. "You're punishing me for killing your precious Sophie when I was no where near the jungle when it happened."
"It happened because of you." Ben said.
"I'm not even sure it really happened at all Ben. I sent Sayid out to the jungle to find her body. Do you know what he found? Nothing Ben! Sophie wasn't there!"
"She died in my arms. Don't you dare tell me what I saw!" Ben growled.
John watched them with rapt interest and it suddenly dawned on Mel. She knew what had happened to Ben and she knew that John was the cause of it. She also knew that Ben wasn't going to believe anything she said about Sophie.
"You bastard." she whispered as she turned to John, "No matter what I do, you've set me up for failure."
John shrugged, not interested in her plight even if he helped cause it.
"It doesn't look like you'll be needing me anymore Ben. Not since John is here to save the day. I guess you won't be needing them either."
"Mel, no!" John ordered but she reached for her gun anyway. She had it aimed at the first man when John's knife sliced into her shoulder. She ignored the pain and pulled the trigger. She shot each one of them, one by one. Three possibly innocent men fell to the ground. She hesitated for the slightest moment when she came to Lauren. It was long enough. John pulled her out of the way to safety.
Mel knew it would be foolish to fight him now, while she was injured. She threw her empty gun down to the ground, turned and disappeared into the jungle.

"Thanks John." Sophie said as he handed her stuff for molly.
"Richard will pop by in a few days. Check your both ok and if you need more supplies."
"Hows ben?" she asked. No one had told her that Ben thought she and Molly were dead.
"He's coping." John replied. "I'll see you soon. I have something to do." as he rushed off.
After unpacking her supplies and clothing and tidying the place up. Sophie decided to take a walk around the jungle not too far from her home.

Mel continued to run, only stopping long enough to pull the large knife from her shoulder. She'd just killed three men. Four if you counted the one from earlier. The people in the village were right for caling her a murderer. She had somehow become one.
Mel heard a voice coming from somewhere up ahead. She slowed down and peeked around a tree.
"I don't believe it." she said to herself. She saw Sophie walking around a small clearing with Molly in her arms.
"I knew she wasn't dead." she whispered.
Mel had to stop herself from walking into the clearing and demanding an explanation from Sophie. She told herself to be rational and think this through.
Finally Mel turned away and started towards the village. With any luck she would beat Ben there and she could tell him the good news. That Sophie was alive and he'd been tormenting Mel for nothing.

Emma and Jack shuffled through the contents of Ben's briefcase. They were mostly maps and diagrams of the island taken from the Flame station, mingled with files on the most prominent of the Oceanic survivors. Emma giggled as a stack of old love letters (some of them fairly saucy!) addressed to Ben from a number of the village's women, among them Sophie, Mel and Juliet, spilled out.
But Jack, it seems, had struck gold. He was suddenly very serious. "Emma, look at this. It's a diagram of the Orchid station. It looks like a psychological testing facility. Ben scribbled some initials on it - and DDH is one of them."
Emma took the pages from Jack and quickly scanned them. He was right. Five names were superimposed on the map of the Orchid. Among them was DDH: Desmond David Hume.
Emma paled slightly. This was what she had been looking for all these long months, and it was all right in front of her. The Orchid. According to the map, the Orchid wasn't far from the original Oceanic survivors beach camp. It must have been very well hidden.
She looked searchingly at Jack. "We need to go, Jack."
Jack understood. "We'll go as soon as Sayid gets here." He didn't acknowledge what remained unspoken between them - that freeing Desmond would add a level of complexity to their blossoming romance that neither was quite ready to deal with. But Desmond was Jack's friend as well as Emma's lover, and they needed to get him out of there, regardless of their feelings for each other.
As if on cue, Sayid showed up. Emma and Jack filled him in on their destination. If he noticed a growing closeness between them, he didn't let on. "All right, let's go," he said briskly.

Sophie went back home with Molly placing her in a moses basket. Soon she started to cry as she wasn't ready to sleep. Making Sophie picked her up and held her so Molly had her head resting on Sophies shoulder. She rubbed her back to calm her down. Soon Molly stopped crying. Sophie thought back to when Ben always held her in his arms till she drifted to sleep. "You miss daddys cuddles." Sophie said as she rocked back and forth hoping she would drift off to sleep. "So do i" she sighed.

Zoe stayed laid down on the deck, but held her arms up.
"I mean no harm." She started calmly. "I don't want any trouble, I swear."
"Funny way of showing it when you've just taken half my crew at gun point from the beach." The man replied bitterly.
"I was not with those people, and in fact, they would probably shoot you for suggesting it." Zoe replied truthfully. "My actions come from me alone, because, I am alone." The man grabbed Zoe by her arm and lifted her to her feet, and dragged her below deck.
"Well, you're going to have to do some convincing first." He replied roughly, his grip was tight, and painful, making Zoe wince, but she didn't say a word, it was hard to come back with a witty response when you had a gun to your head.
Below deck were three other men and two other women. One of them fetched a chair, and Zoe was forced into it while some fetched some rope, tying her hands behind her back and her feet to the front legs of the chair.
"We play it safe on these kind of missions. Two groups, one stays here, the other goes off, that way, if the first group goes down, the second goes in. We are trying to avoid that." The man who had grabbed Zoe from the deck and brought her down began to explain. "We came here to help. We are here to rescue the survivors of oceanic flight 815, and we have heard rumors about this place, the people who inhabit it, and we know you aren't one of the flight survivors. Now, we better start this simply. My name is Camron, and you are going to answer every question I have for you with the truth, an if my people still have not returned by the time we are done with you, we are going to go ashore, and organise a trade. Understand?"
Zoe looked at Camron briefly before she burst out laughing, which she knew was a bad idea, but she wasn't going to go down without dignity, which she was sure was to happen. She saw anger boil even more in Camron's face.
"What's so funny?" He demmanded.
"They are never going to trade me for your people." Zoe replied, still laughing. "They took out an entire inititive to protect their island"
"Well you can bank on this. If I hear any of my people are dead. Then so are you." Camron replied triumphantly, smiling wickedly as he saw the colour drain from Zoe's face.
"So you can start with your name." Camron began.
"Er....it's Zoe. My name is Zoe..." Zoe bit her lip as she dared to say the next part. "...Pace."
"She's lying." Came a voice she recognised. Out of the shadows, stepped out a black man, with a tufty beard and a serious face upon him. It was Michael Dawson.

A gunshot cracked through the air, bringing Lauren round in an instant. She squinted, waiting for her eyes to adjust to the sunlight, with one hand held against her throbbing temple. She scanned the jungle, searching for the origin of the shot. She turned around quickly to see Kevin fall face-down to the floor. A visible ring of blood slowly growing around his chest.
“No!” She screamed. She turned angrily to face the woman who had killed her friend, demanding an explanation. The woman was staring at the gun in her hand.
"I warned you all what would happen if you ran. Now you know I wasn't bluffing." The woman replied coldly before turning around and marching back into the forest, dragging Lauren along behind her. She turned around, looking at her captured friends. They all exchanged terrified glances. What the hell had they gotten themselves into? Who were these people?
They’d been walking for about an hour, when Lauren heard an unfamiliar voice: “I’d like you to put your hands up Mel” they said.
Lauren looked up to see a handsome man emerge from the bushes carrying a Kershaw KO Blur. She gasped inwardly, for she had exactly the same hunting knife back home in her apartment.
The man seemed to be having some kind of confrontation with her captors. He was repeatedly asking for her and her friends to be freed. She frowned in confusion. Who was this guy? But she felt relief inside, as she saw the woman, Mel, raise her hands in the air, surrendering to him.
The three of them carried on arguing, accusing each other and yelling loudly.
Mel suddenly whipped around and shot Harry straight in the chest. Lauren’s eyes widened. Before she had time to think, Mel had shot James. She kept shooting. Lauren it would only be a matter of seconds before she joined them on the floor. She clenched her eyes shut. She heard the third gunshot and knew she would be next. Her whole body was tense as she prepared herself to die. Prepared herself for the pain that was coming her way.
…Except it never came.
She slowly opened one eye and surveyed the scene before her. Her friends were dead on the floor beside her, their murderer had disappeared into the jungle.
Lauren turned around and saw the two men staring at her. She slowly backed away, not daring to take her eyes off them. Her back hit a tree, and her eyes darted around terrified.
The man with the knife, the man who had saved her, slowly walked out towards her, his hands outstretched.
“What is your name?” He called out.
She hesitated before replying “L-l-lauren” She frowned at the stutter in her voice, not wanting to show any sign of weakness. She cleared her throat.
“Hello Lauren, my name is John Locke, and this man, your captor, is called Benjamin Linus”
Lauren’s body shook as she digested this information, glancing from one man to the other, petrified.
“There is no need to be afraid of me Lauren”, John continued, “I will not harm you. I’ve come to protect you. I’ll take you with me now. I know a little pla-“
“Oh no you wont John”, interrupted the man called Ben. “She is not following you off into the jungle. She is coming with me. I will take her back to the village”. He smirked. “I have a few questions to ask her”.
“Very well Ben” sighed John, “In that case I’m coming with you”
He motioned for Lauren to follow him, before adding “But know this Ben, from now on she is under my protection”.
Lauren glanced up at him. They briefly exchanged eye contact and he smiled kindly down at her. She put her head down and wearily followed them both to the village.

"Michael.." Zoe whispered. "How...how are you here?"
"The people on the boat picked me up from the boat a month after leaving the island." Michael replied coldly. "We've been searching for the island again ever since."
"But - that's impossible." Zoe replied. "How did you get so far? I mean - Ben. He lied, he gave you the wrong coordinates! You couldn't have got far, you would just have been circling the island, forever." Michael frowned at her.
"Well, I guess he was wrong then, wasn't he?" Michael replied with a raised eyebrow.
"Oh, by the way, some of your fellow oceanic survivors have survived since you betrayed them. Charlie is dead now though, along with Libby and Ana. But you already knew that didn't you?" Zoe replied coldly. She saw Michael's face drop. "Oh dear, touched a nerve?"
Camron stormed over to her, and punched her across her draw. Zoe took an out take of breath from pain, tasting blood in her mouth.
"Don't you dare talk to him like that." He snarled.
"Did he neglect to tell you that he had to kill two people to get off that island with his son? Two people, one of whom had bonded very closely with one of the other survivors. Hugo Reyes?" Zoe continued before looking at Michael again. "Charlie's best friend."
"Why should you care about them?" Michael snapped. "You infiltrated our camp! You are one of the Others, you took my son!"
"You're wrong." Zoe argued back. "I never agreed to it. I came to the beach because I was - because I am on your side. Well, not yours personally. But Jack, Locke, Hurley, Desmond. I'm on theirs, and I would have done what I could to help. And I did. I went with Charlie and Desmond down to this other Dharma station. The Looking Glass. We went to push the button, to unblock the signal, so this island could be found, so they could be rescued. And for what? To be tied up here, with my life threatened, all because I was one of them!" Zoe hissed. "So don't accuse me of taking your son! I was doing my best to get you all rescued!"
"Why isn't Ben letting them go?" Michael demmanded to know.
"Don't ask me." Zoe replied, glaring at him. "I wasn't his most loyal employees. In fact, things got so bad between me and him, he banished me. Besides, that's not the real question. The real question is, what is Jack and Hurley going to do when they know you are still alive, and more to the point, know that you are right here, just half an hour swim away?"
Zoe smirked at the look on Michael's face. He looked afraid. Camron raised a gun to Zoe's head.
"I wouldn't do that if I were you." Zoe said to him sharply. "I have a baby girl and a baby boy back home, and I ain't planning on abandoning them just yet." She turned to face Michael. "You of all people should know that a child shouldn't be seperated from their mother." She added acidly. "Their only parent."

The walk was hard and long. Ben marched on ahead of the group, obviously preoccupied with other things. Lauren and John followed a little way behind.
“I like your Kershaw”, Lauren spoke tentatively, looking up at him.
He looked down in surprise at her.
“You know about knives?”
“Oh, sure”, replied Lauren, “My dad used to take me hunting while I was younger. I used to spend every spare minute of the day doing target practice. I have a Kershaw back home, although personally I prefer Gerbers, they are far more lightweight and flexible.”
John laughed to himself. “Well, you certainly know what you’re talking about,” he smiled, “Maybe one day I’ll have to show you my knife collection”
Lauren giggled. “That would be great” before frowning at herself. Her friends had just been killed and she was laughing with the enemy. Although, this guy seemed to be different she pondered, lost in her thoughts.
She tripped on a branch, and stumbled for several seconds, trying to regain her balance, before promptly falling flat on her face.
She inhaled the smell of the forest floor, breathing in wet mud and leaves. She rolled over on her back, feeling foolish.
She looked up to see John standing above her extending his arm out. “Whoopsy!”, he said. She cringed and slowly extended hers, and he gently pulled her up level with him. They looked each other straight in the eye, and Lauren suddenly became very aware of the fact John was still holding her hand. She felt a bolt of electricity shoot through her. She was breathing heavily, aware of their closeness, enjoying the intimacy of the moment.
John looked up through the trees.
“We’re here”, he said, and he quickly dropped her hand and stepped back as Ben came marching back towards them.
“John, take her and hide her. The other survivors must not know she is here, you understand me? Take her to The Mustard Hut. I’ll meet you there in an hour, ok?”
John stood in silence before agreeing and motioned for Lauren to follow him.
“Oh, and John?” Ben said, “Don’t get too attached”, he smirked.

"She's right." Michael sighed, talking to Camron. "We are probably better off with the trade plan."
"It won't work-"
"Shut up." Camron cut across her. "Fine. Let me get the guns and we will be on our way."
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Zoe sat paiently, two men sat either side of her, one holding a gun to her back to make sure she 'didn't do anything stupid' as they used one of the small rescue boats to go ashore. Michael had stayed on the ship, so Zoe had to put up with Camron and his cronies alone, which didn't make much difference anyway, she loathed them all equally.
They finall arrived on the beach, helped her out the boat, her hands tied behind her back, and marched her forwards into the jungle, ordering her to take her to where she thought that Ben and Mel had taken their friends. Zoe had no choice but to lead them to the village.
"You do know you might as well kill me now." She snapped. "You are giving me a death sentence by taking me anywhere near that place."
"Why would that be?" Camron snapped back. Zoe didn't answer him. Camron slammed her against one of the tree.
"What's the matter?" He asked mockingly, stroking her cheek with the back of his hand. "Cat got your tounge?" Zoe turned to face away from him, disgusted.
"You are a dispicible man." She spat. "I hope he kills you first before me."
"Shut up!" Camron snarled again, and released his grip of her, making a slide down to the floor. The two men that were escorting her before lifted her up under her arms and pushed her forwards to make her walk on.

Emma, Jack and Sayid trudged wearily towards the Orchid. Sayid led the group, and Jack and Emma marched closely together behind him, chatting and laughing together.
"Does Juliet know what is going on between you two?" Sayid asked.
Jack suddenly turned solemn. "No, she doesn't."
"We will have to tell her at some point, Jack." Emma reminded him. Jack nodded. "I know."
Suddenly Sayid motioned for Jack and Emma to get close to the ground and stay silent. He saw something moving up ahead. Emma pulled her binoculars out of her backpack to investigate. She gasped. She saw Ben leading John Locke and an unfamiliar woman on the path towards the Village. "Ben can't know that we're here, Jack. He might kill us."
"Don't worry." He responded. "Nothing is going to happen to you. We'll let them go on their way."
The three waited until the others were safely out of sight before they continued towards the Orchid.
***********
Half an hour later Sayid, Jack and Emma stumbled upon a horrifying and bloody sight. Four people, their hands tied as if they were prisoners, had been shot at very close range and simply abandoned.
"Who would have done this?" cried Emma.
"Three guesses," responded Sayid. "I have very little doubt our good friend Ben is involved."
Jack was thoughtful for a moment. "We need to get back to the village as soon as possible after retrieving Desmond. Something big is goingn on. This must have something to do with the boat Zoe saw. We can't waste any time!" Sayid and Emma agreed. They quickened their pace. According to Ben's map, they were only minutes away from the entrance to the Orchid.

Mel hurried through the jungle trying to get back to the village. She was still debating with herself if she was going to tell Ben about Sophie or not. Sh ewas so lost in thought that she walked right into the path of Jack, Emma, and Sayid, literally.
"Hey Mel." Jack said as he helped her up from the ground eyeing her shoulder wound, "What happened to your shoulder?"
"Locke threw a huge knife at me. It's fine."
"Where were you headed so quickly?" Sayid asked.
'"Back to the village."
"Why aren't you with Ben?"
"We had a difference in opinion." Mel said sarcatically.
"Meaning?" Sayid pushed.
"Meaning that he thought he should let John Locke kill me and I disagreed."
"This wouldn't have anything to do with the four dead bodies with their hands tied behind their backs about a mile back, would it?" Emma asked.
Mel looked down, "They were from the boat."
"What happened to them?"
"Let's just say that Ben wanted them dead and now they are."
Jack actually looked a little shocked. Emma just looked sick.
"Mel, you didn't." Jack said.
Mel shrugged, "I wish I could blame Ben for turning me into to what I have become but I know better. I'm just weak."
Sayid spoke up surprising them all, "I wouldn't say you are weak Mel. But you are held under the power of a very dangerous man."
Mel smiled softly, "Thank you Sayid.''
"We should get going." Emma said.
"You're right." Jack said as he looked at Mel, "Do you want to come?"
"No thanks." Mel answered honestly. "I don't want to cause any more trouble between Emma and Desmond."
Mel saw Jack and Emma exchange a nervous glance.
"Good luck." Mel said as they left in seperate directions. Mel looked back to see Jack grab Emma's hand and hold it tightly. Mel's eyes widened. That could be trouble.

"According to the map, this is it." announced Sayid. It looked like they had reached a dead end. They stood in a small grassy clearing. A rough cliff wall stood in front of them, covered in vines. Sayid cleared the vines from the cliff and felt all over with his hands. "The entrance should be here." He located a metal handle embedded in the rock. The door itself was cleverly camouflaged, but opened easily with one strong pull.
Jack spoke up. "We don't know the situation inside. We have to be prepared for anything." He spoke a little more softly to Emma. "Are you ready for this?"
Emma nodded solemnly. "As ready as I'll ever be, Jack."
Jack gave her one last kiss. "Okay. Let's go."
